Pixel 2 XL back camera Portrait mode issues after Oreo 8.1 update - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi
I have been experiencing really poor blurring on the main camera Portrait mode following updating to the latest Oreo 8.1 update a week or so ago. (OTA update). I have a UK black white version on EE. This did not happen before the update.
The selfie mode is still very good like it was prior to the update. However for the main camera I can't seem to get very good results... No matter how I take the pic. Here is an example...
Anybody else experiencing this?
Thanks
Kozzy

issue since android 6.0 on snapchat

hi,
i just upgraded to marshmallow and surprise the quality of the front facing camera on snapchat is so much worst than with lolipop... no problem with the stock software camera. i dont understand why suddenly after that update this morning, the quality is all pixelated and that make up effect jesus what happened ...
Does anyone have a clue?
I am having the exact same issue after upgrading recently as well, annoying! Only on Snapchat front facing, LG G4 front facing is fine. Probably Snapchat needs to update their app?

Android 8.1 upgrade: screen freezing in camera app on device rotation?

Hi, All -- I've got two Pixel 2 XLs: one on Android 8.0.0 and one on the final released version of Android 8.1.0. On the Android 8.1 phone, when using the camera app, the screen will freeze briefly when the phone is rotated (portrait/landscape). But this doesn't happen on the phone that's still back on 8.0. Are other people seeing this change with the Android 8.1 upgrade? Or might something else be causing this issue on my Android 8.1 Pixel 2 XL? Thanks!
Just tried this out and yes I'm getting the same on 8.1
I've just did what you say and no, it doesn't happen at all on my Pixel 2 XL upgraded to Oreo 8.1.
Did you try factory reset?
interesting! Yeah, a factory reset seems to have fixed this issue on my Android 8.1 device. Fingers crossed that this'll stay smooth.
OK, I think I sorted this out. It's Meteor Swipe that causes the problem. It must be something related to its screen overlay function that, on the Pixel 2 XL running Android 8.1 (though not 8.0), causes the camera to stutter when the screen is rotated. The issue goes away when I add the camera app to Meteor Swipe's blacklist. I wonder if other apps that require accessibility access might cause this problem in the camera app.
Not seeing this behavior between my two 2XLs. Was in beta program with the first. Can't seem to get the second one to update to 8.1.

Android 9 Pie and camera crashes...

So about a month ago on 8.1 my camera starts crashing out, airplane mode is no help. Did the 9 OTA upgrade today, and looks like at the least for me, the alleged software fix might not be in it? (Though I may be one of those with the permanent hardware condition that requires an RMA, and not an airplane mode fixes it victim...)
Anybody else with the camera crash problem see it fixed with the OTA P upgrade?
Hmm...I've never had a single camera crash from Google camera on this phone yet.
this is not an issue,
this must be because of an OTA issue or some other app,
use logcat to find out why the crash,

I don't have this issue on 8.1/DP3-5, but I encounter issue after update to official Pie today. Then I did clear cache and storage in APP storage setting and my camera go back to functional.

Camera App Issues

Hello all, i noticed this about a week ago,
I open camera app, and the viewfinder shows a lot of stuttering, the lower the light (not night sight and not night time photos, day time) the more it struggles to instantly snap the photo.
And throughout all this, lag, stuttering and what appears to be the app having difficulty just keeping up with displaying the viewfinder objects accurately.
Anyone else having this problem?
I noticed it after i dirty flashed Dec update. but then i did a full wipe and clean install of the dec update.
Still on going
thanks!
Edit:
I've cleared data, uninstalled updates, reinstalled updates, disabled all substratum themes, nothing seems to make it better
Mine does the same thing. Stock December, rooted with magisk.

Oh my God well I'm happy I'm not the only one but I'm unhappy about it because the camera is really jittery now
Mine doesn't do it all of the time, it randomly does it. Does yours do it all of the time?

Just guessing but might be a HW issue. Perhaps there's a problem with the lens movement when trying to focus. You could try a different camera app to see if that makes a difference. Have you contacted Google support?

Not a HW issue as this happened after Dec update.
No, I don't talk to google unless it's about a replacement, their techs are tier 1 idiots, they ain't gonna tell me more than what I know at this stage, and we don't get to talk to the people that know more than us.
Edit:
Can more people chime in and confirm if this behavior is happening w\them ?

Mine did this a couple of times since the update too. It only happens when I first open the camera app but not all the time. It happened yesterday but I can't get it to do it since then.

Yep, can confirm it happens when I first open the app too, but also happens when I move the phone a lot and the view finder just struggles to maintain a steady image through the movement

Google probably messed with the ISO to improve the image quality. I don't get it often and my photos come out clear so it's not a huge deal for me. It's still a big improvement from the Note 9 I had anyway.

I know image quality is good but the UI behavior is something of concern. The user shouldn't be exposed to the lag like that. Drives me nuts
I have been travelling and this phone is the worst I have used for taking photos while moving, I missed so many photos since the camera would not respond to click, then ended up taking a photos a few seconds later. Annoyed me so much tried to turn off motion, but it seems you can't and I believe this is the main problem, my wife uses a Pixel phone as well Pixel XL and she did not have the same problem with the camera app at all, same OS update level and the new camera updated app. Once it has taken one shot with lag, then the following are quick and almost instant.

I have no problems taking photos of things in motion , just a slight hesitation when I first open the app for the first time. As I said before my Note 9 had problems with objects in motion, not so with this camera for me. You can turn off motion photo by tapping the motion icon in the photo app.

Disable HDR enhanced and then you will be able to turn off motion. After that you can turn on HDR again.

literally have experienced this exactly, not every single time, but def post Dec update.
It's strange there is no consistency to this experience

You are right... I miss my Pixel 2 XL already, except for the screen. A much better phone, and the most amazing battery I have experienced... Pixel 3 XL just killed all my hype with the Pixel Line.
Update:
I flashed one of the roms and it had me bootlooping so i did another flashall, this time all i did was root, i didn't flash any kernel.
Stock rom, + Magisk, and issue is no longer present.
This MAKES NO SENSE.

Camera issues (freezes and crashes)

Hey guys! Would just want to know if anyone else who's got the op7T from the popup events yesterday are having issues with their camera freezing and crashing.
Mostly happens while toggling the macro mode and also when you view a photo you just clicked and hit the back button rapidly to come back to the camera
These are bugs which are expected from early version of the firmware and will definitely be fixed in the update though. Don't take this as a conclusion that it's a bad phone. I absolutely love it! I just wanted to check if I'm the only one facing the issue
I'd say it's probably going to get a patch out for day one bugs, it's a common thing to happen with smartphones.
So wouldn't worry for now, perhaps whilst you're in your 28 day grace period, look into it further and if your issues are unique then I'd look into a swap.
But I'd say it's more than likely a software bug that will be addressed.
Need a Solution
I'm a photographer by profession and have been using my phone for making frame samples. This issue is causing me a big pain while at work. @oneplus please help me with its solution or refund me for the phone, I'll have to buy an iPhone sadly.
