Can anyone of you recommend a good sleep-tracker wristband + Android app? - General Accessories

Hi everyone,
I recently heard about these fitness/health/sleep-tracking wristbands that are apparently able to grep your heart frequency, log it and also wake you up while you're not in deep sleep state to make you less tired in the morning.
Before accepting that being tired constantly and dependent on caffeine injections to the heart is my life now, I'd like to try that out and see where it leads.
Has anyone of you tried one of the billion devices for this purpose and can recommend something? My main issue is that it A) needs to work properly, but also B) needs an app that is halfway decent at least. I'm grateful for any hints.
Kind regards!

Sleep as Android is a great app I've been using for over a year now. It has great integration with Android Wear watches, Xiaomi Mi Bands (Requires external paid app but it's worth it.) and some more trackers (Full list here, https://sleep.urbandroid.org/documentation/integration/wearable/). I personally use the Xiaomi Mi Band 2.
The app detects if you're in a deep sleep or light sleep and wakes you up when it thinks you're light sleeping. It also has compatibility with Philips Hue Lights to simulate a sunrise. It gives you advice on how to improve your sleep, prevents jet lag and oversleeping and much more. I highly recommend this app.

MI band 2

I know Fit Bit watches can track your heart rate but I am not sure if it can wake you up..... But if you are interested in running or jogging or walking or basically just being active, you can get Fitbit to track your heart rate and daily steps.

Moto360 heart rate / fitness apps

Has anyone been successful in getting any applications working with the heart rate monitor? I was really hoping that from switching from the Gear 2 Neo that Google would allow for 3rd party application to read the heart rate and I can get an accurate (ish) measurement of my heart rate during indoor workouts. Apps such as MapMyFitness and Strava to name a few.
I know that the 360 constantly measures my heart rate throughout the day but I want to be able to count calories from a workout and see my heart rate graph after a high cardio workout.
Bumping because I posted in generic "Android Wear" forum and didn't know about this forum (had moderator move it but appeared on 2nd page). After reading through this forum doesn't seem like there is any hope yet...
we need this
Something I don't like about google is all of this stuff should have been out from the start
What I would like to see and have yet to find. I have a Polar Bluetooth Heart Rate Monitor and it syncs to My motox 2014 with various apps. I want to display my current Heart Rate, calories distance, pace etc etc.
I thought Runtasic or Runkeeper would do that, but havent been able to make it work yet.
Show Heart Rate and/or Steps on Watch
Many are disappointed in the absence of this capability. Adding it would put the Moto 360 in the same commercial space as the Microsoft Band...which I had and returned because it was too limited.
A hope on the horizon comes from the makers of the app WatchMaker who said that they are working on displaying heart rate and/or steps in one of the customer watch face designs. No date announced.

The app has a lot of promise and does exactly what a lot of us have been looking for however...
It uses a lot of battery... A LOT of battery. Its default setting is to continually monitor your heart rate and in doing so, cause my 360 to wear out after about 4 hours of use. 12 is typical for me. You can open the app on the watch and tap the heart until the circle quits spinning and that puts it into standby mode and the battery life improves. Hopefully future updates will make toggling it on and off a lot easier.
To see your heart rate in Google fit, you must launch fir and hit the + at the bottom of the screen to add another graph and it starts tracking your heart rate.
Its a "donate" app so be prepared to cough up a buck if you want to unlock all the features... and support the dev and encourage him to continue to support it. IMHO, its worth it.

I downloaded it and paid for it. Saw lots of "tags" but no explanation of which tag might display heartrate or steps on the watch face. Maybe it's my lack of understanding the app.
Uninstalled it and got my refund. I am contacting developer by email to see if I am missing something. Will reply back here with instructions if they help.

I tried the link (sorry I can't quote it here...it's in the original reply to my post) and I got an error. That gave me a search box on Google Play and I typed in "heartsync" (without the quotes, of course). That gave me Heartsync. Installed it and trying it.
I am pretty sure that it does not display steps or heart rate on watch face. Without donation, I only get one measurement uploaded to Google Fit. Will donate and test some more.

Thanks for the shout-out. I'm the dev for HeartSync (and Amplify).
HeartSync is definitely a work in progress. I have a lot of plans for it. Right now, here's how it works:
1) Automatic mode. You set the frequency to whatever you want, and HeartSync will try to measure your heart rate that often. You can see when the next check time is in the phone app. When it's time, Heart Sync will try to get your heart rate, then upload it to google fit. If it can't get your heart rate within 60 seconds, it gives up. If you set it to 5 minutes, you'll get some battery drain. I prefer 30 minutes because the battery life is really good, and you get a good spread of heart rates in Google Fit charts.
2) Workout mode. You open the app on the watch, and tap the heart. Heart Sync will now continuously monitor your heart rate, even after the screen turns off. You also get a card notification on the watch during this time reminding you that heartsync is running in the background. This will update your heartrate continuously to Google Fit. To turn workout mode off, open the app again on the watch, and tap the heart again. The battery will last about 3-4 hours in this mode.
After any kind of measurement, you should be able to open Google Fit on your phone and refresh it. Then you can click "See Charts", "Add Chart", and add your heart rate chart.
I'm keeping HeartSync in stealth mode a little bit for now. I want to get a few more features in before I create an app thread for it here
Thanks,
Ryan
@cryptyk,
Ryan, thanks for the quick response and fixes that you pushed out. App is working very well now and battery life is much improved.
Keep up the great work!

hey there bud,
i bought the app and tested it. did 1 hour cardio with it continuously monitoring my heart rate. after i'm done, i checked the data and voila, nothing got synced to google fit. what did i miss?
Here's what I did:
1. Run the app in phone so I can easily see heart rate while doing plyometrics.
2. Set it to update every 5 mins.
3. opened the app in watch and then tap the heart to enable workout mode.
4. at the end of the workout, i tap the heart icon to stop workout mode.
is the data stored in the watch, can it be retrieved and synced to google fit?
thanks!

Hi - I'm so sorry it didn't work
It's still relatively new, and I'm still squashing some initial launch bugs. I just released a new version last night that should be more stable, and also includes some charting in the app.
What's not explained very well yet is that there are two modes:
1) Auto check. This is what you used when you moved the setting to 5 minutes. That will check your heart rate throughout the day.
2) Workout mode. This will measure your heart rate once per second until you stop it. To get into workout mode, launch HeartSync on your watch, then tap the heart icon. You'll see it start monitoring. Make sure you stop it when you're done because monitoring continuously will wear down your battery in about 3.5 hours.
HeartSync will keep getting better. Stick with me while I work out some of these early bugs
Thanks,
Ryan
Monitoring while using other apps
@cryptyk
Man, your app is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Just one question before I buy it: does it monitor the heart rate while I'm using other apps on the smartwatch? For instance, if I'm using RunKeeper or a similar app to track my workout (without heart rate), and start HeartSync in workout mode, will both work at the same time? RunKeeper in the foreground showing the workout stats, HeartSync in the background collecting the heart rate.
Thanks!

Great question. It *should*. You can give it a try for free. The workout mode of the app is free.

Tested and it does work. However, I noticed a strange behavior, that may or may not be related to your app: after some seconds, possibly right after the screen goes off, the heart rate stucks and doesn't update anymore (shows a constant value). The green LED is on, and it doesn't matter if I move the watch, clean the sensor etc. It only restarts measuring after I stop it in the app, and tap the icon again - just to stop after a few seconds, restarting the whole thing.
I say it may not be your app, because I noticed a similar behavior in other fitness apps like Endomondo. In fact, your app seems to have a good side effect for these other apps, triggering the heart rate measurement when it doesn't start or freezes (happens frequently with Endomondo). So, is it a design issue of Android Wear or Moto 360, not allowing a constant heart rate measuring for a long time? Is it my device which is faulty (have you tested the real-time measurement for a long time)? Is it a configuration / software issue, which can be solved by a reset (will try it later)?
Finally, I noticed some bugs and have some suggestions which I hope can help your development:
1) After the screen goes off, we have to select "Open" to see the heart rate from the app. That's fine, but it seems multiple instances are being started each time we tap "Open", because I have to swipe right several times to close it (same screen showing for each swipe).
2) You could allow showing the heart rate, after the app is minimized, by clicking on it and swiping left, instead of having to tap "Open". (Hope I made myself understood - it's the way some apps behave to show details.)
3) The heart rate graph, in the phone app, shows the wrong time, although it's correct in Google Fit. Perhaps you are not taking in consideration the time zone, getting UTC time?
4) It may be out of the scope of this app, but a good addition would be configurable heart rate limits (low and high), vibrating the watch or showing other kind of alert when out of range.
Well, I'll buy the app, because the basic functions work, it's not expensive, and I want to support your development (it's good to see the developer close to the community, hearing us). Thanks for that and keep up the good work!
Quick Comment on 1.0.8
Nice Progress.
As others have requested, it would be nice to keep screen on (if it doesn't completely kill the battery) during workout (or some other special) mode.
Like the new graphs. Seeing success with the upload to Google Fit.
Keep up the good work; hope it's a big success for you.

To Ryan,
I'd like to report some issues with this app:
1. For some reason, tapping the screen to stop the continuous monitoring does not work if it is ran for 30 or more minutes. A restart is needed to workaround it.
2. If update automatically is on and im not wearing my watch, it will still try to check for heart beat and will not stop until it detects one.

SleepWake: keeps you awake and safe

Guys,
I'd like to introduce our new shiny app, SleepWake , which tracks your heart rate and buzzes like hell when you doze off. It's useful for driving, or for boring lectures at uni . Can you guys give a go and tell what to improve? Ah, the forum thought I'm a spammer and doesn't allow link , so just use PlayStore and search for SleepWake please.
Cheers.
Sounds interesting. But I'm curious how constant heart rate monitoring might drain the battery?

Hi, I don't read heart rate constantly, the app just starts a session when it senses some patterns in the accelerometer that match movements at high speed. Another option is the user input the interval to track (in Settings). Hope I explain it clearly enough. Cheers

App that keeps ambient mode always on?

So I found this one app " Swipify" that lets me keep the watch face on full time. I like it but it drains the battery a bit faster then I would like. Also when charging the watch the round charge progress bar does not advance so I have no idea how charged it is until I take it off the dock. So I un-installed it. I am looking for an app that will let me keep the watch in the dimmed "Ambient mode" full time and then when I lift the watch to look at it, have it to the full watch face mode until I set my arm back down.
Anyone make such a add-on app by chance? :fingers-crossed:
Or should I start learning how to code apps?
Any chance they (moto) will update with such features?
Thanks,
-DK
I'm not sure if such an app exists, but I'm just about 100% sure that Motorola will never add this feature. The current 5.1.1 software version was significantly delayed because they were trying to optimize battery life. I think it's a combination of a small battery and an old, power hungry processor that is the main problem.
I find that since upgrading to 5.1.1 I can go the entire day on one charge in ambient mode but I have to leave the watch sitting flat in order to test it. But by the end of the day I still have 25-25% charge left with it running the entire day in Ambient mode as long as I do not get to many notifications during the day which of course I can control those with no problem.

Huh? What's the point of having a watch if the only way you can get it to work is to lie it on the desk and not touch it, oh and to disable notifications, aka the only thing that makes the "watch" something more than juts a watch?

That is why I am looking for an App similar to Swipify to keep the ambient mode on full time. And I only let it lie flat for a day to test the battery life and it makes it through the day with the screen on full time in ambient mode. So I know the watch is capable of doing what I would want it to use it for.
And I said "as long as I don't get too many notifications", I never said I disabled notifications. I still have those on.

Gocha. No need to be defensive, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Still seems like you'd always be on the hairy edge of running out of battery in a real-world scenario. Hell, I'm ambient mode off but tilt-to-wake on, and some long days I barely make it to the end of the day. Never had luck with even the fake ambient mode the Moto provides.

All good, sorry to come off as defensive. :good::highfive:
Been using it with tilt-to-wake turned off and I am finding that by the end of the day I still have plenty of juice left.
With Ambient on and tilt-to wake off I find I have about 35-40% left at the end of a 7am - 11pm day. That is with receiving some email and text notifications (maybe 15-20) during the day.
I know everyone has different uses and ideas of how to use their Moto 360 so everyone's setting are going to be different, but what I am after is a always on "dimmed" or "ambient" mode with the option to turn on tilt to wake so I could test the battery life both ways. I would also like to use my 360 for home automation control and I I know with "Autowear" it is possible but from the little testing I have done so far it would kill my battery way to fast so perhaps on a future SW that will be something I will be doing.
Pausing and starting Netflix or HBOgo or Plex from my 360 is working pretty good for me as a start.
Think I will try and contact the owner of the Swipify app and see what he can do for me......
With the latest update LCA44B, when ambient is on and tilt is off, the screen will stay on all the time. However with ambient on and tilt on, it is same as previous behavior, screen will turn off when you put your arm by your side.

Activity Tracker

Hi there,
I just got a Huawei Watch active. I want to use the watch as an activity tracker wich tracks my activity and if possible also my heart rate occasionally. I want to synchronize my burned calories with myfitnesspal.
Right now I got UP By Jawbone and Google fit. I use Google fit as main platform to collect all my sport tracking etc However, up and Google fit does not synchronize with each other.
Does anyone know a good app or good app setup so I can :
- daily activity tracking
- sleep tracking (sleep like android?)
- sport tracking (crossfit)
- heart rate measurement
- correct calorie counting
Thanks!
Yay! Someone who is actually using it as activity tracker. Me too. It seems most folks could care less.
Anyway, I tried several heart rate apps and settled on Perfect Cinch. It doesn't do constant (which kills battery anyway) but you can set it to check at different intervals. There is a two week free trial and it's worth paying for after that.
Sleep for Android seems to be the best app for that function.
I also use Fit, Up, and Huawei Wear. Still trying to see best combination of what works.
And there is an app called Fithub that will sync various apps into one.

Mi Band 4 - frequently asked questions

I've compiled a short list of frequently asked questions seen over various forums or points which were not clear to me (even as a user of MB2). If you find anything missing or incorrect, please let me know.
Q: How to track sleep?
A: Sleep is tracked automatically during night hours, Heart Rate sleep assistance can help in improvement of the detection of various phases. To view the sleep stats, open Mi Fit app and sync the band. Sleep/naps are not detected during day hours.
Q: Does Mi Band have automatic workout tracking?
A: No, workouts have to be started manually either from Mi Fit, or from the band directly.
Q: How to use 24/7 HR with less battery usage?
A: Configure "Automatic heart rate detection & Sleep assistant", detection frequency as desired. Do NOT enable activity detection - it will switch to continuous HR measurements whenever there is some activity detected (e.g. walking). When needed, use manual workout for continuous HR monitoring instead (which will also gather additional statistics).
Q: How to use a 3rd party watch face?
A: The most easy way is to use app like Notify & Fitness, Mi Band tools, etc to apply the watch face directly. Great selection of watch faces can be found here https://amazfitwatchfaces.com/mi-band-4/top. AmazFaces populates the "My band displays" in Mi Fit application.
Q: Is MB4 waterproof? Can I swim/shower with it?
A: Per standard GB/T 30106-2013 (or ISO 22810 : 2010(R2016)), 50m water resistance is rated as suitable for showering, surface swimming and shallow snorkeling. Diving is not recommended. After each submersion in sea water you have to clean the watch/band in fresh water.
Q: MB4 cycles through menu during water activities.
A: Enable lock screen on the band and try avoiding running water in the "down->up" direction. Shower can easily imitate slide up gesture and unlock the screen.
Q: MB4 detects HR when laying on the table or wrapped around inanimate objects.
A: "Signal-to-noise ratio of a real blood flow is sometimes very low so the algorithms are very sensitive in screening for any non-random components in the light variation, and when such are found they are interpreted as HR. So, the algorithms pretty much always find something which is not completely random and interpret that as a HR."

Q: What is behavior tagging in Mi Fit?
A: AFAIK behavior tagging is there only to help developers to make the band more accurate, once you stop the activity, data collected from sensors are uploaded to Xiaomi. It does not impact nor improve your statistics directly and it certainly drains the battery as sensors are being constantly pulled for data. When you start an activity, press the button in the upper right corner - it will switch to real time raw data of sensors.
Q: Is there a hardcoded minimum Heart Rate value (e.g. 47bpm)?
A: Band measures as low as 40bpm (if this value is actually 100% correct is hard to tell as it happens during sleep ).
Q: Are there 3rd party apps for Mi Band management? I do not like Mi Fit.

Q: I don't see detailed stats (steps, sleep, heart rate) for previous days, only summary in history.
A: When on the detailed screen of the current day, swipe right to navigate to detailed stats of previous days.
Q: Mi Band keeps unfastening itself during sleep or when dressing/wearing backpack etc.
A: Try to wear the band reversed (strap loop away from you, fastening button towards you). Also you can buy a silicone strap keeper (generic 14mm or specifically for Mi Band on Ali/eBay/..) to keep band on hand even when accidentally unfastened.

Hello, I just have a curiosity regarding the effective frequency used by Mi Band 4 to track the steps.
Sometimes it tracks steps very fluently, almost in real time; other times instead it stops counting on the display and after a while it adds a group of steps in a bunch (it always tracks steps but on the display it's not always reported in real time).
Why does it happen?
Does the heartbeat frequency detenction work in the same way or is it different?
Thanks
In my experience, steps are updated in real time when there is a long enough continual activity (walking outside, running etc.). For short activities with a lot of breaks (around the house) it tends to update in batches. It might have something to do with "clearing up the noise" - band waits for "chaotic" small numbers to accumulate and then applies some kind of statistical filter to provide accurate number of steps. Also all activities must have 10 steps at minimum.
Maybe someone else has better explanation though..
Heart beat rate is being recorded by Mi Band itself at set frequency and displayed on the phone only after sync (or during workout). For some reason watch faces with HR display show different value than Mi Fit after the sync. So far I haven't figured why
Hi,
Is it possible to make the band vibrate when it looses BT connection? I tried using "Anti-loss my phone feature" in "Notify & Fitness app" but it says "Instead this option use native connection lost notification for best results". Where can I find this native option?
Best regards

As far as I know, this feature was part of the official firmware on Mi Band 2, but has been removed on Mi Band 3 and 4. N&F offers a workaround with alarms which are constantly being rescheduled, but as it's written in the instructions, this "beta feature" will most probably drain your phone and band battery very quickly. If you really miss this feature, you could try submitting a feature request via Mi Fit app and hope that it'll get implemented some day officially.

Do you know if there is a custom firmware that has this feature?
Anyway, thanks for your reply. I've ordered Mi Band 2 and if it works better for me I'll return the 4.
How can I share my mifit band 4 activities from the official mifit app? The latest in Google play I mean

There is no custom firmware for MB4 as of now, only custom resources (languages, icons). Also I found an information that firmware must be signed, so unless someone finds a way how to crack this security mechanism, there won't be a custom firmware.
I find MB2 still very good, but nice big screen with custom watch faces and easy starting of workouts from MB4 is very addictive. Just curious - why do you find this "anti loss" feature so important?

What exactly do you want to share? Workouts can be synced to Google Fit for example, or exported as a screenshot from Mi Fit.

I work at a large software company, we have on-call duty so I need to be available. When I want to go to the beach or to the swimming pool I would like to get notifications from my band. If I loose the connection to the phone and do not get a notification I might miss some critical alert.

I see. For your use case I would look for a smart watch with a SIM card. Using a smart band connected to a phone will be extremely limiting for you. Even if you'll receive the notification that you're out of range, this will happen more often than not - practically almost immediately once you're in the water or a couple of meters away from the phone, so I'd expect to be notified very often. Btw. MB4 shows on the watch face once it's disconnected from the phone, but it's only a small icon - there is no vibration or any special notification shown. It might help if you glance at your band every now and then..

I managed to share directly from the app by pressing on the activity result. Thank you! I shared it as an image

Do you have any recommendations? I prefer android and would love it to be completely standalone (I'm not sure about eSIM).

I did not know that bluetooth range is reduced to a couple of inches when the device is under water :/. If MB2 would vibrate every time my hand goes under wanter then I do not want it. I guess I can use MB4 and "mi bandage" / "fitness & notify" phone loss feature when I go into the water with an interval ~5 min to remind me to get out of water and check to see if there are any notifications and I can disable it when I do not want it.

Personally I don't have any experience with smart watches beyond Mi Band, but the usual choice seems to be Samsung Galaxy watch series.
Bluetooth in general doesn't have great penetration of solid obstacles, in my experience it reaches about max 5 meters with one or two walls in the way, and often it's even less. Situation is slightly better in open space. Quick Google search says, that watch will lose connectivity just about 3 cm under water (which may be the case with eSIM too, I couldn't find more info about it). With WiFi it's about 15cm (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3355409/). I guess that simple reminder to check your phone will be probably your best choice if you're planning to spend some time in water (or leave someone near your phone and he/she will let you know if any notification arrives ).

IMHO the app Mi Bandage can emulate this behaviour by continuously setting up an alarm on the Mi Band a few minutes in the future. So the alarm will trigger if it's time doesn't get updated by the app because the connection was lost. I wish I could emulate this behaviour with Tasker somehow without needing the app. (currently using Gagetbridge and additionally Mi Band Tools just because of the gesture support for Tasker. But I can't recommend because Mi Band Tools is very annoying regarding asking you to enable notification access for the Mi Fit app even if it's not installed)

This is exactly what N&F does. Though prolonged use will have impact on the battery as it needs very often wake locks and data synchronizations.
How can I install 1.0.7.0.4 on miband four?

From N&F app. But you need to remove Mi Fit (or replace it with patched version), otherwise it will reflash the FW with the latest official stable version (1.0.6.16).
Is there any posibility to get sleep data (REM) in realtime from miband 4? Raw data don't interesting. For my project with arduino and etc. Or maybe sensor + sleep phase recognition.

I don't think that it's possible. Sleep is calculated afterwards, only after the sleep has ended, and from raw data gathered during the night. For example start of sleep is using historic data - e.g. no movement for 5 minutes, add canditate for sleep start, if no further major movement detected within 30 minutes, make it permanent, if steps detected, cancel sleep tracking. You can't have this kind of data in real time. Also band itself doesn't do any calculations, the sleep processing is done in the app.
