reasons to upgrade 8.1? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

just curious if its worth updating to 8.1 with the January update going around?

i was asking as the 8.1 december update had caused issues for some people and i was checking to see of they had fixed those issues

No issues here. Actually the screen is much more responsive. Plus latest Security patches, etc...

awesome i was worried since the december update caused some issues but its good to see they fixed the responsiveness issue.

8.1 was necessary to get bluetooth to work with my car; I think they did a lot of bluetooth enhancements there.
I have had one unexpected shutdown since 8.1 (I'm on beta so that's over 2 months or so), that's the only downside (and no idea if that was really 8.1 specific).

The December 8.1 update has been great for me. I originally had huge issues using my fingerprint reader in apps, it now works flawlessly every time on 8.1. I have seen some multitouch issues playing Rules Of Survival, but I don't play that much so it's not a huge deal breaker for me.

Lol. I've been holding off updating to 8.1 because
a) I really like the current set up of my phone (rooted, workaround to carrier blocking mobile hotspot, stable OS)
b) I know i'll run into a bunch of hiccups trying to replicate this state mentioned above on 8.1
I do want to try the AR stickers and the supposed camera improvements, so will end up upgrading.... eventually.

Yes! Because all the Kool Kids have.

Only issue I'm having with January 8.1 is same as I was having with December 8.1 which is the screen does not show who's incoming calling for whatever reason I have no idea. I had thought maybe it was because I was unlocked, rooted, etc... but right now I'm not, am fully stock and locked in and it still doesn't show, ugh. Other than that though, the January 8.1 is snappy, the touch responses are definitely better and I swear it almost seems like the blue tint at angles is much less noticeable or better now, but placebo probably.

That issue is very annoying. I was hoping it would have been fixed with the January update, too. Back in December, I ended up making a macro with Macrodroid to turn the screen on with an incoming call, and it's fixed the problem for now. I think the phone app needs to be updated. I've given feedback through the phone app, but there has been no update for weeks.

The Autofill API has some improvements, and apps like 1Password are reliably filling in most apps and webpages (tested the latter with Chrome). This has been one of the reasons (for me at least) to come back to Android after a fairly long hiatus.
AR stickers are also cool.
And who doesn't like bleeding edge?
It's also been pretty stable.

8.1 is ONLY good if you need HD voice other than that it's buggier, finger print scanner is worse, lock screen touch response issues are more apparent for A LOT of people. So much so Google is aware of the issues. Also 8.0 battery life is WAY better than 8.1.

HTC 10 Android 7.0 Nougat Update Issues

I upgraded to Nougat yesterday, currently facing many stability issues. Any help would be appreciated on the below problems.
* Sound is unstable, screen lock does not produce any sound
* Incoming calls are often silent, no sound comes out for some reason
* HTC Live Wallpapers disappeared, I cannot locate them
* Double tap to wake problem persists, I had this problem on 6 and still cannot fix it despite many attempts including sensors, wipe clean and 3 hard reset attempts // I had this issue when I purchased my phone back in September. After many trial and errors it somehow worked on its own. Then I got a problem on my screen and took it to the HTC Service. They told me they replaced the screen and did a software update and my DT2W no longer worked
Also missing the live wallpapers over here.

No live wallpapers either from UK Nougat update but not encountered stability issues yet.
My Xperia keyboard was playing up but reinstalled and seems to be OK now.

I guess that's why there's a new firmware 2.41.401.4 leaked. Would explain why they halted the Roll-Out of 2.41.401.3, and seems they already working on a fix.

My HTC 10 is an unlocked US version and it seems pretty stable. After initial roll out of Android 7 on Nov 25th, we then got 2 updates(Dec and Jan) which contained bug fixes and security patches.
I guess my #htc10 has hardware issues out of the box
After the UK Nougat update my Sandisk SD card is not being recognised as external storage. Was ok before the update. I've removed & reinserted a couple of times, still no joy. Anyone experienced this?

I had the same problem. I had to remove it and reinsert into the phone.
Hey guys,
None of the issues above I ran into....Has OP tried a factory reset? Always recommended to Android devices after a big version upgrade.
Speaking of factory reset, well, I did it, and I have some other issues :
1. Camera in Pro mode, under long exposure duration, the image quality drops significantly...I am an photography amateur, so I know what I am talking about.
2. Sometimes the phone app does not recognize saved contacts. (It seems that this would be solved with 2.41.401.4)
3. Battery drains...much quicker than 1.95...before I can get 5h or + screen on time, now barely passes 4h.
I've also noticed a batterydrain. Although I've done a fresh install. Yesterday I did a complete wipe again without backup recovery. Battery seems stable now.
Since the OTA Nougat update i've had issues with instagram videos not playing whilst pictures work fine (on both 4g and wifi).
Also gmail no longer syncs automatically and i have to manually refresh to get mail.
Wiping cache partition and wiping app cache/ reinstalling the apps didn't work. I do feel like the update has somehow caused this as it was fine before.
Anyone else having these issues?
To comment on issues others have been having, my battery drain feels normal. And I have always has issues with gestures and double tap to wake not working
Unlocked USA 2.41.617.3 is stable here
Unlocked USA 2.41.617.3 is stable here. It brought the January security patch and also fixed all of my battery drain issues I had since the September, 2016 Android 6.1 update. I lost 2-day battery life in September, 2016.
I am finally back to 2-day battery with doze acting normally since January, 2017 update.
No extra updates or fixes yet for us in the UK. Also noticing apps will won't auto update correctly now. Getting a google play is not responding message. HTC need to sort this out asap

Android O beta as DD

Hello everybody, I just became the owner of a new 128gb Pixel XL! I am coming from a Nexus 6P. I was running the latest developer preview of O on my 6P and it worked fine for a daily driver. It performed well and I didn't have any random reboots, force closes, etc. Is the latest Pixel DP pretty solid? Would you say it could be used as a daily driver? Thanks for any input!

I've been using it as a daily driver on my Pixel XL 128GB with no issues. The only weird thing I've really noticed is that occasionally, when coming out of deep sleep, it will struggle at first, but then smooths out. Also, occasionally the Google Play Music app will show a notification, but other than that no problems. WIFI, bluetooth & LTE work as expected. I'm on Project FI and wifi calling and VoLTE while connected to a T-Mobile tower also work properly. As far as battery life goes, I consider myself a moderate user (SOT of 3hrs) and I can get through a full day without having to charge.
I went back to N.
Battery life is not good, and there are too many glitches.

Got the OTA to Android O from 7.1.2 after enrolling in the beta then got the small maintenance update (OPP2.170420.019) that fixed the Android Pay issue and I've been running fine ever since.
No one has trouble with talk to text when you press the mic on Gboard??

It's not daily driver ready
Don't listen to any one who says otherwise
Its definetly usable if you arent a power user. But there to many small glitches to make it worth it. Force closing on some apps and unable to mount on USB 3.0 ports were my most painful issues. Had to revert.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
I haven't had any serious issues using O as a daily driver. I've only come across one app so far that doesn't work--Air Droid just force closes repeatedly. I finally got sick of the error messages and uninstalled it. I haven't encountered any other issues but I'm not really a power user.
I have a Pixel XL 128GB too and I would not recommend it as a daily driver, I'm rolling back to nougat today btw.
I would describe it as an advanced version of a CM/Lineage nightly, it has no major issue but it's far from being stable.
I had some overheating issue when mobile data is on, I also have fc problem with the settings app when data is on. I also noticed that battery life was much better and consistant on Nougat.
To elaborate, I tried N when it was beta on Nexus 5x, and that was awesome, stable and smooth from the get go.
O beta is just not ready. Simply isn't.
It fixed my camera problems
I am using it as daily driver since dev preview 2 is out and did not encounter any problems so far. Battery life might not be as good as Nougat but the difference is not big enough to be a problem, at least not for my usage. I was about to return my Pixel XL because I was having problems with the camera on Nougat, pictures were blurry as soon as I tried to zoom and the videos were completely out of focus all the time and this problem is gone now. If anyone else is having this problem you should try O.
I've actually found that battery life is slightly better on O than on the most recent builds of Nougat. I've also encountered no problems with the settings force closing when data is on or anything like that. If you've ever run a custom Rom like Pure Nexus O is already more stable than that. Obviously it's not going to be as stable as Nougat but it seems fine as a daily driver to me
I've been using Preview 2 since it came out no modifications. It works for what I do each day, Google Chrome, WiFi, Bluetooth, Google Play Music, NonStop Chuck Norris. Only issues I've had is it doesn't wake from sleep with OKGoogle, and I had to change my WiFi router from being hidden to connect for both 2.5 and 5Ghz. Haven't had any Bluetooth issues thank goodness!!!
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
been running it since release. was originally on N stable, went to dev preview, which was not stable enough, back to N stable then took O OTA.
Apps I use all work, though some stuff is janky, as the release notes say will happen.
On first boot phone.app had same issues I encountered on dev. preview, IE: crashes and not able to actually make calls. However on the beta, wiping phone data/cache fixed those issues, and it now works fine.
Android Auto stops working after a few days, reboot fixes temp.
Google Play music notification pops up randomly, many others have this as well, just an annoyance.
Bluetooth on occasion is dodgy. It works fine, but once in awhile, the display in my vehicle is incorrect, or doesnt populate info at all, most times just going to next track or previous track fixes it.
Camera can be slow to launch (this is posted by Google as a known issue).
Been using it as daily and for me its been good, nothing I have encountered would make me need to go back to N.
Does anyone have issues with the mic button on gboard freezing phone
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
I've been having the same issues listed above with play music and Bluetooth failing to display track info on my car headunit. Other than that, things are okay - few app crash notifications w/o the app truly crashing. The important stuff seems to work normally so far.

Android O problems

I have seen a lot of weird android O problems put up here, is it really that buggy or are their a lot of you rooting and running things that aren't necessarily tailored to O yet? Just curious, I don't have it yet but as soon as it is made available to my Pixel XL I will download it, I just want to make sure it isn't a giant bucket of bugs.
Sent from my BTV-W09 using Tapatalk
I haven't had any issues, I was able to update with OTA before Google pulled it the first time. Mine updated normally, havent had any weird reboots or behavior on my device yet.
I am unlocked running pure stock, enrolled in the beta atm
I haven't had any issues either. It's been performing very well and Bluetooth works great for me on everything I've tried it with.
I did a clean factory image. Rooted and suhide. Many of the TiBu apps had to be deleted and data restored, but that happens between different ROMs, so it's no surprise. Battery drain seems higher than PN or PixelDust, but it's too early to tell for sure. Push notifications are taking longer than on 7.1.2 for gmail, outlook, and wickr. But, no bugs so far to report.
Awesome, so I guess since I am not rooted or unlocked and not using any non android O approved apps (that I know of) I have a very small chance of bugs. Thanks. I really do appreciate it, sets my nerves at ease.

Battery life with Oreo and I don't have that great of reception.
Got Oreo on my Pixel XL via the beta.
No reports yet of problems with volume or battery life, but one of the new features "picture-in-picture", is not working for me at all. Google support have told me its a known issue and are working on it.
Like Partridge's extendable table, it's not a deal-breaker.

PiP only works with YouTube red or if you modify your nav bar to have a custom button to do it for youtube. And go to chrome watch a video in full screen then press home it'll work that way.
Not sure what's happening but when I was on dp4 and now on Oreo official the battery life has been the best it's ever been since I bought the phone back in 2016.
My experience has gotten better over the last day or so. The first 24hrs felt very janky. Since it has settled in and I'm happy with the performance.
When you guys did a fresh install did you restore all of your settings etc from the cloud? Or are you manually resetting your phone back up?

Only bug I've seen is PIP. This release has fixed my bluetooth issues(controls sometimes not working with my Jaybird X2's, Moto 360 constantly disconnecting with having issues getting it to reconnect even after reboots of phone and watch). Bluetooth issues have been my only complaint with the phone and those started for me only after the first OS update(7.?.?). I flashed the factory image and restored from cloud backup. Very happy so far.

Has anyone had notification sound problems? When I get a notification the sound plays at least twice or more.
I perform the OTA as beta program first and use it for 5-10 mins.
Later I decided to perform a facotry reset, during the wifi setup, I found that the phone cannot recognize my hidden wifi. In the end, I found that the phone could not find wifi channel 11, 12 or 13 from my router AC68U. I manually set the channel to 4 and the wifi was connected.
Last time I saw the same issue was on my Kindle Voyage.

new Firmware 47.1.A.12.179

The new Firmware 47.1.A.12.179 is out:
https://xpericheck.com/device/G8441
in Android-Hilfe.de Thread they write that the firmware includes Android Security Patch is 01. May 2018.
It is the May security patch. Couldn't find any other changes so far.
Good day.
I noticed that wifi now connects intantly.
Good news about wifi, although for me, the issues are so intermittent that it's tough to tell.
SmartLock settings are still blank.
I won't be able to test car bluetooth until tomorrow, so fingers crossed. Although I did discover last weekend that if I pause from the car's headset, it will display the currently paused song after 2, or so, seconds.

You really can't see the benefit of Treble? We get security update each month! I'd never seen such quick updating before Treble, on non Google's phones.
To compare: my Motorola X Force is still on October 2017 security patch :/

I have to agree with Didgesteve. The only improvement is that the SmartLock screen stays visible - it still doesn't work, but you can see it. The wifi problems came back. And the bluetooth is the same, to possibly worse. Yay! for security updates, but from a user perspective, this update did nothing, as far as I can tell. At least there are workarounds for the problems. It's still a huge improvement over the Galaxy S5 it replaced.
Disappointing - WIFI is unable to stay connected for more than a 24 hours. Daily restarts are needed. No solution even after 4 months of this ridiculous behavior. SONY should admit this is a HW issue and offer replacements or solve it ASAP.

I have problems with battery drain after this update. Before the update, the phone could be used for more than two days without recharging and now I have to recharge after 8 hours without much use. Consequently I have deleted almost all apps from my phone and did everything reasonable (yes, stamina mode is activated). No success. Sad.

Sound crackling and distortion on the galaxy A5 (2017)

Hi. I'm kinda new to xda forums.
When I stream music via youtube, soudcloud, drive, spotify (you got it), the sound is completely ok.
When I play an mp3 however, the sound is distorted.
My AOSP rom is based of lineageos, so I tried my best deleting audiofx via debloat (magisk module) and deleting audio_effects.conf and soundeffects in /system/vendor/lib, yet the problem persists. I'm completely lost.
If anybody knows about this issue or how to fix it, help is appreciated. Thank you!
If you need a logcat, gtfo or anything, I'll be available.
is this your 1st experience with kind of aosp rom?

nothing can fix this problem. even with viper4android. but neither for stock rom.

Try disabling google now or whatever that was, you should check the official LoS thread, also i dont reccomed using aosp roms on this phone since HWC is broken so the battery is very poor

1. About the battery, that is certainly not true. Battery life is greater than expected. If you think about an older phone, then I would agree, but here, even fast charging works (even though it constantly says slow charging, I think that's just a minor bug). In short, no need to complain.
2. What do you mean google now? I think that's dead since 2017. Are you bringing me back to 2015? Nowadays, it's just called my feed, and there is no way disabling it, heck, what is even doing with audio? If you are referring to google assistant, I used it on my previous AOSP phone and nothing happens.
3. Unfortunately there is no talk regarding about the audio in the custom rom forums.
Sorry for being rough and negative, I just want to clarify :victory:. Please don't be mad at me.
The known bugs on my experience are:
Casting
Missing libgdx.so
Sometimes advanced restart does not work
Audio crackling
Keeps telling slow charging
No internet at OTA update (when I actually have)
Some are minor, others are frustrating. Thanks for your reply.

We've gone quiet on the audio front because we just have to accept it's not good. Changes of this nature happen on ALL devices. E.g. I had Xperia SP years ago. Amazing camera on stock... completely crap in LOS (CM at the time). Galaxy S3 mini... battery. Moto X Play...camera (absolutely important s it has a 21mp camera). They take time to get sorted. Some are done well...others not so well.
It's the high-end mid-range phones that suffer (A5 2017 and the above mentioned) the most. Cheap phones are perfect (LG Spirit 4G and the Alcatel Pixi 3 both work better with LOS based ROMs than they did on stock).

I understand that this rom is unnoficial and comes with bugs, but the problem is software-wise, which means it can be fixed, even though we need to dig deeper to the root files. Maybe we can recreate or port the samsung drivers used for audio, deleting all traces of audiofx and other minor fixes just to acomplish this. This may sound unrealistic, impossible and bluffing, but the limits are not only from the rom. Maybe we need custom kernel, or who knows.
Heck, there is little to no talk regarding this issue, so I presume some don't have this issue which could mean only a handful of devices have, because of revisions, idk.
So to sum it up, it could be fixed, but I guess no one has the time and motivation to do it.
