S4 Mini LTE with Lineage keeps crashing after SMS - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the latest Lineage 14.1 on my S4 Mini all seems to be fine except that it crashes and then reboots from time to time. This seems to be happening after sending SMS messages, but not always. I did have this problem before with the stock OS, so probably not Lineage specific but as it's still happening, I'm guessing a setting somewhere that needs to be looked at?
Thanks

The LineageOS [st]advanced[/st] reboot menu on my S4 Mini doesn't work at all, a long press of the power button performs a soft reboot, rather than opening the options, when "advanced restart menu" is selected in Developer Options.
Also, selecting "kill app back button" long press option soft reboots the device when the foreground app is killed and I land on my home screen. Long pressing back while already on the home screen on its own also performs a soft reboot, btw. Rather than simply restarting the launcher.
Both options need to be unchecked for me and I now use different methods(3rd party apps) to achieve their results.
Maybe your issue is related? Try unchecking those two options and re-testing...
*Edit: Even without Advanced Restart Menu checked, my device only ever performs a soft reboot, regardless of which option, even Power Off, is chosen. Just tested.
I usually use NEO Power Menu for Xposed, anyway, but disabling these and retesting still produces only a soft reboot, for every option.

Thanks for those ideas, on my phone I have 'Advanced Restart' checked and it's working, or at least the option to boot into recovery does. The 'kill app back button' option was unchecked. I've changed my sms app to Signal to see if it makes any difference.
I did read somewhere else outside XDA about some call settings that could be changed, but I can't find that link any more.

* Update to clarify my above posts; I've resolved the Power Menu issues I was having on 14.1 to be related to Substratum Legacy System overlays. Uninstalling Substratum overlays on my device returns the full functionality of my reboot menu and Power button.
It does not, however, fix the long-press Back button to kill foreground app issue I mentioned. It still force-closes the System and performs a soft restart on my device, without overlays installed.
I've since went back to the I9195-LineageOS-15.1-experimental build by Arco, which by *far and large*, has simply the best battery life of any custom build I have used available here. The various missing features, in my case, can easily be overlooked, as most can be implemented via various 3rd party methods, and are definitely worth sacrificing in the meantime for such a battery life.
I've thought for months that my hardware has been on its last legs because of really over-excessive battery drain whilst using various different custom ROMs.
Resurrection Remix would be my OS of choice but I really can't justify using that fantastically feature-rich OS any longer on this handset, not after using the above LOS 15.1 build and remembering what it was like not to have to charge my battery every time I was near a power source. It's absolutely great!
* Sorry for the off-topic blurb, this was meant to be just a quick update about the overlays/Power Menu issue... :/

Help with lockscreen issue on lineageos 17 :(

Running lineageOS 17 on a xiaomi mi 9 lite, loving it, but i made a mistake.
I have my phone rooted and have been messing around with edxposed and magisk and i was trying to see if i could enable some sort of face unlock feature through a mod. found one called hidden settings and i started poking around, and i tried to change the value of this one called "lockscreen.options=enable_facelock" through the terminal, hoping it would enable a face recognition header in the settings somewhere, but instead, it had a very strange effect. first, that string no longer exists in android secure settings on my phone, and second, now my phone will not lock through normal means. using the power button, waiting for timeout, nothing, as soon as i wake the screen, the padlock icon is already open and the screen swipes itself up and goes to my unlocked home screen as though it had recognized my face and unlocked itself...only it didn't, because even trying this with my thumb over the camera has the same result.
anyway, i don't know what to do, but i need my phone to lock. so far the only thing ive tried that works is to use the lockdown mode button in my power menu, but that's a hassle. anyway, any help would be appreciated, my goal is to avoid a factory reset as well.
thanks in advance
Sorry, unofficial lineageOS 17 and magisk and edexposed. That is a highly experimental setup. You should be aware, there you have to start from scratch at some point. Be happy, if it's enough to wipe system and data. Others flash stock ROM to fix things.

actually it was simpler than I thought...turns out nothing was broken at all. in fact one element was functioning better than i expected it to. a while back i was messing around on my previous phone, a rooted oneplus 5 running resurrection remix, and i started fiddling with tasker...anyway, at some point i had issues with the native smart lock features so i set a profile in tasker to unlock the phone when the screen turns on as long as i am connected to my home wifi network. apparently when i restored all my apps to the new phone through my google account it saved a ghost of that profile...i didn't catch it because it wasn't listed in the tasker interface, so i assumed none of my old automations had transferred. i figured it out when other old profiles started to activate, and eventually i remembered that i hadn't set any of that stuff up on this phone yet :victory::laugh:
in any case, thank you for the input...to be honest i would rather have a less experimental setup, but the mi 9 lite doesn't have much development yet so i'm choosing the best from what is available.

Android 10 update now force closes all my background apps

Hello everyone, i've been experiencing this problem for a while now: every time i put an app in the background (swipe up on gesture / middle button in traditional), Android immediately closes it for me. I keep seeing in the list of open apps (long swipe up on gesture / square key in traditional) the apps I should have in the background but as soon as I open them it's like I'm starting them for the first time, not saving anything I was doing before. So far i've been able to live with it, but now I can't postpone this problem anymore.
What i tried so far:
Restarted the phone several time
Turned off adaptive battery and battery optimization
Turned off energy saving
Didn't touch anything in the developer settings
And i got another issue probably linked to this one: in the GMail app, the notifications for multiple accounts only works to the account you are viewing, not to the others. (Example: If i'm connected to two accounts, A and B, and i'm viewing B's emails, if i receive an email on A's account the notification won't work. If i receive the email on B's account while i'm viewing A's emails, it won't work either).
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Just in case you want to know i'm currently on 11.0.5.0 build.
EDIT 2: Link to my reply with a possible solution to the application issue: LINK

Xiaomi team for our device is at fault. If you want the best android experience you should buy Pixel phones.
I'm also having this problem. Seems that restart helps a bit for some time but not for long. It is really an awful experience to use the phone like this. Having the 4 GB version.
It's the first time that I'll complain about this phone! But the use is unbearable now! I have the 4gb version too! I hope the next update fixes things
As far as I know, this problem is common on our device. If the next update isn't going to fix it, then I'm switching to a custom ROM. HavocOS, RebelOS or LineageOS 17.1.
Never had this problem before but is indeed the first time I'm also considering a custom Rom too!
If you're rooted you can fix this using LSpeed app
Hello again, i apologize for being away for a while, but i had personal problems.
I just wanted to reply to my own thread because today i updated to 11.0.7.0 build, but they don't seem to have solved anything? The changelog says only
Optimization: Increased system stability. Reduced system lag

(other than June Security Patch). I'm reading the replies now, and i have to tell you that (currently) i can't root or install a Custom Rom because it would conflict with my bank's application.
So, once again, no support from Xiaomi... but the great news is that i may have found a solution for the application problem! I will link this reply to the main post, so you can find it more easily, let me know if it works for you too!
What i did:
Disabled Adaptive Battery under "Settings -> Battery ->Adaptive Battery"
Disabled Night brightness (also the plannings)
Disabled Do Not Disturb (also the plannings)
Disabled Rest mode (if any)
Rebooted the phone
Try it out with two application, and if you want to reactivate some features after the reboot, i discovered that "Adaptive Battery" creates problems only after some days since it's turned on, so i suggest to keep it disabled. For the other settings, i can't confirm anything because i haven't tried yet, so let me know.
Thanks
Finaly it worked. :good:
I was searching for this problem for a long time.
Your solution worked with me.
I want to say:
I already jave disabled adaptive battery, Night brightness and Don't disturb mode. But only Recovery mode I needed to disable it, then I rebooted the phone.
Now I can switch between applications, and no application have been closed.
Thank you
what recovery mode do you think?where can I find it? thanks

A lot of features suddenly disappeared after a reboot.

Hello, everyone.
I had used Oxygen OS 9.0.9 for a fairly long time with no problems.
However, after a recent reboot, suddenly the system started to behave in a strange way.
Namely:
1) Notifications completely disappeared. The notification drawer is always absolutely empty, even the persistent ones are missing.
2) Multitasking disappeared. Tapping the square fake button does nothing.
3) The extended tiles drawer, the one that appears after you slide down the second time, after you have drawn the notification screen, doesn't appear at all.
4) Tapping on the "build number" line in the settings does nothing, no "you are a developer now" message, nothing.
5) The reboot menu shrunk to two entries "reboot" and "off", as if the phone hasn't been unlocked.
The phone is unlocked and rooted with magisk, but not much more, no tuning done.
Any ideas what to do? How to get the missing features back?

Why won't you try a re flash and check again ?
Sure. I'd just want to exhaust the less radical measures first.

Try reflashing and check.
And meanwhile why neglecting A10 ?

Oh. Great
So, I fixed this problem by doing a clean flash of 9.0.11.
Kinda a radical solution, and I have spent a lot of time on backups and such, but hey...
Curiously, a dirty flash, although succeeded, did not solve the issue, as didn't the "Factory Reset" from the Settings menu.
I had to wipe "system" and "vendor" partitions to proceed.

Like I expected, clean flash helped .
Bw the call recording issue in the A10 can be resolved by deactivating OK Google command of speech.
I just thought, you should know.
But I guarantee their ram management is ****ty in A10.
Well, a clean flash is not really a proper solution, since we still don't know what was the root cause of such a weird behavior.
The killer feature of A10 for me would be charging from OTG, for doing backups. I need to check though, how much time it takes to make a backup after a clean flash.

Question Advice on choice between rooting and installing a new Rom

Hi I have the OnePlus 9 pro running Android 12. Stock, with all updates. I have gotten fed up with the operating system resetting my choices on battery optimization and permissions. This is related to notifications. I do not receive notifications from apps unless I have both made them a battery optimization exemption, and manually given them all requested permissions. But every time I restart my phone, or if there is an update, the operating system resets all of these changes to default, effectively silencing all notifications from these apps until I manually change them again. It's upsetting enough that I have to make these changes in order to get notifications. The fact that the system resets them all of the time is just annoying. Can I disable the system resetting these changes if I root my phone only? Or is it necessary for me to install a Rom that doesn't do this to my apps? On a side note I use Nova launcher because I dislike the lack of customization from OnePlus operating system. Thank you for any advice you can give me
TL;DR: OnePlus resets my battery optimization choices and my permission choices regularly. Can I fix this If I root or is a new ROM necessary to stop this?

That's really odd that it's doing this to you. Never had this issue on any of my OP devices. Including stock OOS and custom ROM's. Which variant do you have, which firmware are you running, have you tried factory resetting then setting up your device and seeing if the issue persists?

Thank you for replying. My phone says it's Android 12 with the August 5, 2022 security patch.
Build # is LE2125_11_C.63,
Baseband version is Q_V1_P14,
kernel version is 54147-qgki-g2f286f199c5a,
Hardware version is LE2125_12.
I have not tried factory resetting yet, and if I get a new software that would happen anyway, so I suppose it's worth a shot. The phone also likes to reset some apps. Like the Twilight blue light filter app. I woke up one day to find the phone had reset the app back to default, and I had to set it up and all it's permissions up all over again. I didn't realize this wasn't normal because when I searched, I couldn't find anyone with the same problem. I just thought the battery optimization was super extreme this time around. I'll backup my favorite apps and try a reset and see if that works. Thank you again for responding.

Weird that when I woke up, Repainter reset my system theme I was using and even though it's still enabled app-side, it's disabled system-side. Now I gotta figure out why lol. I would recommend factory resetting for sure first to see if that helps at all. Make a full system/internal backup and copy it to your PC before doing so. Feel free to reach out if it worked or didn't work for you.

Thanks, I did go through that page already. Most of those menu options aren't present in the OnePlus 9 pro on Android 12, and the rest I tried but nothing changed. For example, I have my blokada app locked in the recent apps, but choosing "close all" closes it in spite of this. Just another mark against OnePlus' software.

I think you jinxed me. Repainter hasn't been working all day and the xda app won't let me login for some reason. It logs in, but still shows the key icon and none of my subscribed threads load. That's really odd that when you lock an app in recents, it still clears regardless. Which launcher are you using? When I was on OOS, I used Nova and when I locked apps in recents and hit 'clear all', said app would still remain. I didn't care to use OOS12, once I realized there was no color code theme option, I went back to OOS11 until I took the plunge to update my fw to use Nameless again.

I'm sorry! I have innate bad luck, sometimes it runs off on people. I was using the OnePlus launcher at first but after I switched to Nova it stopped happening I think. I've reset my phone now, hoping it is fixed.

Edit: rebooting seemed to fix the xda/repainter issues. Just sucks I lost my 10+ days uptime streak lol

Nav buttons stop working with disabled lock screen profile

I recently upgraded from LOS 18.1 to 19.1. I was having issues with battery drain and finally decided to upgrade. The battery issues are completely fixed. A new issue cropped up with my profiles however. I have a "home" profile that disables the lock screen when my phone connects to my home wifi.
Since the upgrade, when my lock screen is disabled, my home and recent apps button stop working. Other things stop working as well like being able to copy paste between apps. My somewhat usable workaround for now has been to enable the recent apps screen when double tapping the home button, for some reason this works. I can return home by tapping the outer edge of the recent apps screen. This is what I'm running for device and OS:
Device - Poco X3 Pro (Vayu)
OS - LineageOS 19.1 microg Oct. 24, 2022 release(from https://lineage.microg.org/)
Recovery - TWRP
I found a bug report on Gitlab for the exact same issue here: https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/5189
They're reporting it as fixed for the most recent builds, which I'm currently running and still having the problem.
I'd really like to avoid a device wipe and reinstall as I have some MFA apps for work that would be a big pain to get going again. Does anyone know of any fixes? I'm guessing it's permissions related of some kind as it's like the device is only half unlocked or something. I've tried creating a new profile as well as disabling profiles, rebooting, and trying again, nothings worked so far. Should I just open another bug report on Gitlab? Appreciate any help.
This seems to have stopped, but I have little idea as to why. I noticed it stopped after I connected my phone to my PC with a USB to transfer files. After I did that, for some reason the lock screen disable is working fully as intended now. All nav buttons work, copy+paste, etc.
