Jan security patch OTA - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Has anyone seen this yet?
I saw the files were available for manual, but nothing on the OTA front yet.

İf you mean Oreo 8.1 January patch, it is already pushed one week ago. Maybe you can try forcing it by pushing check updates in settings?

Same here, still no update

Surprisingly that's where I've been checking, hence the post.

I havent gotten it either. Boot loader is locked and on stock image

Can manually install the ota. https://developers.google.com/android/ota

I never got it either. I'm locked and stock on VZW. Manually sideloaded with no issues.

I've read articles in the past that say they push them in waves over a couple weeks. My 6p has taken over a month before to get the update.

I had to side load mine I'm stock and nothing showed up

They said in January pressing the check for update would push it to the device.

Those who have a computer (which is all I hope) and ADB set up why bother waiting for the damn OTA! Sideloading FTW!

They lied obviously lol. Maybe next month...

Nothing here as well

I was prompted to update, and then followed the Magisk instructions to remove and then install the OTA, then put Magisk back on slot 2, but the install of the OTA failed. Any suggestions?

I never received the update either. Dropped off beta program and was able to get the monthly security update. It didn't have to reset my pixel either

Update finally arrived

Restarted my phone today and after the reboot it said finishing update. Never got notified about it. Weird.

OTA updates roll out in phases. Can be as little as a couple of hours after release, or as much as 10 days to 2 weeks.
You can speed up the process by just sideloading the ota. I gave up on it coming automatically (I'm impatient) and went ahead and installed manually and running great.

Nope not at all I am completely stock and locked. I used the skipsoft Unified Android toolkit and was very easy to do.

The first week of each month is when security updates are usually released.
That doesn't mean you'll get it the first week (unless you manually sideload the update).
But that's when updates are released.
Kind of like Microsoft releasing updates every second Tuesday of each month.
Except those get applied a lot faster, to more devices at a single time.

8.1.0 OTA question

I have a quick question for those that are a lot smarter than I.
Still nothing for me on the 8.1.0 OTA December update. I have an unlocked Pixel 2 XL and an unlocked OG Pixel XL. I was running the Beta on my OG Pixel and I unenrolled from the Beta and factory reset. Waited 24 hours for a stable version of Android Oreo.... still nothing and it is still showing that I'm on 8.1.0 with the November security patch. Also, when I reset my phone or power back on it's still showing that my phone is on the Beta. I have no idea what's going on with it.
Would any of you guys/gals have any other suggestions? I'm not comfortable with flashing or anything like that since I've never done it before. Should I just wait patiently because it will come eventually?
Thanks.

I got my Dec 5th patch update last night, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time for you.. If you're not comfortable flashing, than I would say just wait it out. It shouldn't be long.
What the poster above me said, just wait you will eventually get it. They roll it out in stages so they don't overload the servers. We all like instant gratification, which is why a lot of people flash it when it is released, but you will get it.

Any idea on why my original Pixel XL is still showing that I'm in Beta though? That's really what's confusing me.

When you unenroll, it will send you an OTA. Did you get that OTA? You mentioned you factory reset, but that's not what actually takes you off of the beta.

No, I did not get an OTA. I've checked on the site and it says that my device is no longer enrolled, however when I restart my phone (from a powered off standpoint) it still says I'm enrolled in the Beta. I check for an update and it says I'm up to date, yet it's running 8.1.0 with the November 5th security patch.
Sorry for so many questions, but I just thought I might be missing something. It's really not that big a deal to me because I know it will come eventually, but I just wondered why it was doing that. I reached out to Google via the chat and they said wait 24 hours for a stable version however it's been well over 24 hours and still nothing. I've unenrolled the device from previous beta's and have never had to wait. The OTA would immediately show up and I was good to go.
Is it safe to take the actual ota while rooted/TWRP/custom kernel? Will it just replace the boot partition or will it fail? I'm thinking I should do a flash all with the -w removed of the 8.1 instead of letting it go the ota. I just got the notification for it.

Well, I had mentioned in the original post that I'm not extremely comfortable doing that so I may just wait it out.
I have a question in regards to getting the OTA updates.
I'm in Australia and got my pixel 2 xl on a plan with Telstra as they are the exclusive carrier here. But I use a Vodafone sim in the phone.
Will this cause me to not get the OTA updates?

December ROM update for BLN-L24

My 6X just received an OTA. The security patch level went from March 1st to Oct 5th. The EMUI version was updasted to 5.0.1. So far so good, I haven't used it much.

Factory reset..
Wow. Two system updates in the last 10 days. Just updated BLN-L24C567 to B366 from B365. Security patch is Nov. 6.
I guess this makes Huawei/Honor phones a lot better than Lenovo Moto phones. Once I recommended my father to buy a (Lenovo) Moto X Pure. The phone received updates something twice a year (!), and its Nougat update came 13 months (!) after the official Nougat release, and maybe 10 months after when Lenovo promised this update would be available. Huawei has a better track record than Lenovo IMHO.
13 months is a lot, and yes, Huawei/Honor has been better in the recent years when it comes to updates
Indeed. They give update if want to else simply discard. btw see what Apple was doing with regular updates.. they admitted and was a let down for many (but accepting it needs some real guts for a brand like Apple)
Who knows other OEMs who gives regular updates are doing similar things
edit: scratch that

Android 9 Pie update

Soooo.....I just bought this phone, unlocked the bootloader and installed Magisk.
Today, I got a system update notification saying Android Pie is ready to download.
Anybody else getting this and if so, I have to go back to 100% stock in order to upgrade right? Then unlock BL again?
Mine isn't showing the update yet. I've got the TA-1068. Not unlocked or anything.
It is possible someone jumped the gun, releasing it too early, and they pulled it so can't download it.
Not yet available on my nokia 6.1. I think we are a couple of weeks away from the update.

What security update level of android 8.1 are you on?
Good luck getting 100% back to stock.
I have a TA-1045 and I unlocked the bootloader and installed Magisk on the July patch of android 8.1. I get update prompts for the August security update, but the update won't install. I tried completely removing Magisk, but it stills fails with "Installation Failed". I don't think anyone has a stock recovery image (at least for TA-1045) to restore
At this point if you flash twrp/magisk you have no way of restoring to stock and accepting OTA updates. You will be stuck on the update you are on until someone figures out a way to take OTA updates or someone gets a hold of stock firmware images for your device (none yet for TA-1045)

I've was able to get back to stock recovery, system and vendor using the 1043 images and my phone still shows as a 1045. So even if removing magisk, it fails, cause I'm getting the installation failed as well. I'm curious if removing magisk and relocking the bootloader will help?

Nope - don't think its Chinse - it appears to be a "global" or international version. I don't really notice a difference from my original stock.
I got it from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...-to-flash-global-firmware-pl2-222e-0-t3831764
And was able to flash the "extracted version" with fastboot. I used some fastboot instructions that I found for a chinese rom and changed the filenames to match the worldwide filenames and it worked without the OST tool

You should have pulled the OTA link from a logcat so the rest of us can download the update files and upgrade ourselves :/
I guess this OTA is a fake. No one with a Nokia 6.1 has reported getting an Android Pie notification. It's super rare that just one single person will get it.

This. Unless OP is an insider and just dun goof'd, then I fail to see this as legit.
Slightly off-topic:
I was on the June security patch on my 6.1 until yesterday. I received an OTA notification while half asleep and got all excited thinking it was the Pie update, but no, it was the July security patch. What's interesting is that immediately after installing I received the notification for the August security patch, and promptly installed that. May just be me being lucky, but that almost imples that HMD are trying to push out the latest security updates to devices as a way of preparing for Pie maybe?

Were you in the beta program? Try opting out. Ironically, I had to opt out and back in to get my update. I'm on Fi though...
Of course there's the easy way too, just unlock the bootloader and flash with fastboot. You can also, if you don't want to unlock the bootloader, side load the OTA via stock recovery.
Same issue here. I'm dead stock and opted out of the Beta program and can't pull down the September OTA. I guess I'll have to sideload it :/
No Update yet..
I also have got the same issue. On Stock ROM with no Root privileges, No OTA update yet..

I am having the same issue. I even did a full reset a few weeks ago. After the P update, I could barely use my phone, it would take forever to get anything to work. Finally sideloaded yesterday with no issues.
