Browsing Root without Root - LG V30 Guides, News, & Discussion

I doubt this is really anything exciting but I installed MiXplorer, opened it up and I was able to browse around the root file system. Not sure why or if this is news to anyone but thought it was interesting.

Can you edit anything?

Root Explorer browser does the same, but without actual root you can't edit system files.

Make sure you keep the file tructure of all the files, you seem to run the root script so it cant find adb.exe in /stuff/adb.exe

The file structure of the the zip you downloaded. You should have a folder named RootOptimusG-English in the folder should be the RootOptimusG.bat and another folder named stuff containing a bunch of files and stuff.

Think I found the problem, are you perhaps running the script as administrator? That will also make it say it cant find the files. Just run the script normally.

[BUG]Volume indicator does not appear normal

Hi.
After the new update(15.4.A.1.9), i noticed that when i try to raise the volume using my volume buttons, the indicator that used to appear ( the slider) on the screen is now a black rectangular.
I don't know if the bug appeared for me only but i would like to ask for your help.
What should i do?
I attached a screenshot.
Thank you
If you had searched the forums before posting you would have found the fix. Navigate to /vendor/overlay/ and then delete the android-res.apk file what is located there. Reboot and the items will work as expected.

ES File Explorer/ Root

Has anyone noticed that if you use the ES File Explorer app you can access all the files that you would be able to access if you had root access. I wonder if anyone has looked into that to try to find a root method.
You can't modify them, an exploit has to be found in the bootloader code to bypass the lock to root.

I am able to open them and modify them. I haven't saved any of the modifications for fear of the unknown results

Saving will result in an unknown error due to the lack of root. Will not work.

Is there a way to use this minimal access to developers a root?
By no means, it has nothing to do with an exploit to achieve root. It's like any root app ..........it only works if your rooted. The root partition and /system are not read protected. So pretty much any non rooted file app can read those partitions. They cannot however read /data, /cache, /sbin, etc. We all wish it was that simple.

Native Hotspot - Google Pixel/Pixel XL

So over the last few days Chainfire has released his systemless root method for the new Google Pixel devices. My question is has anybody found a way to bypass the subscription check on the device? A post made by jphillips.hd88 outlined the only method that works for me, which involves installing a third party network refresh application, and then while the network is refreshing you quickly turn on tethering and it skips the check. This works, but I want to know if there is any way to unlock the native wifi tethering feature, especially since we have root now. Any ideas?
Did you try adding the no provisioning line to the build prop and using Wi-Fi tether app?
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Yes sir. No good there.
I just made a guide on how to do it, hope it works for you
http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/root-guide-native-hotspot-t3493286
Unlock bootloader, root, install some sort of file manager with root browsing( I used es file explorer and enabled the root explorer), navigate to /system/build.prop and edit the build.prop by adding this line to the bottom as the very last line " net.tethering.noprovisioning=true " Save the edited build.prop and reboot. This is what worked for me.

The guide was great, but it did not work for me. The device still checks for a subscription. It looks like I'm still stuck using the flaky work around that barley works until we get a custom rom for now.
Basically the line In the build prop is the way to do the wifi hotspot tethering that way you can use your phones internet on other devices that don't have internet. Also make sure to add the other lone written in the guide. It ensures there is no check for the subscription theoretically. If you need help please let me know. I will be also creating a script soon to do all this for you.

Did you follow everything exactly step by step? If you need help with it just let me know. Also what do you have the Verizon or google variant
Yeah. I actually did it twice. I'm on Verizon, but I purchased the device from the Google Store.

It worked for me. I'm not sure why it didn't work in the past. I followed the instructions and it just didn't take. The only thing I can assume is that Root Explorer didn't save the build.prop or I made a typo. Regardless it is all good now. Thank you.

Is there a way to use the Files app whenever?

Hello!
I wonder if there is a way to use the built-in Files app in the Pixel 2 XL as a file manager? Because I find it really useful when plugging in a USB drive and copying files. I don't know if it has other functionalities but I'm assuming it does (like viewing files). The pic of the app is attached in case u dont know what im talking about.

You could, but it's not going to be as fully functional as a root explorer or similar file manager if you want to edit or move files around. This is actually one of the apps I freeze with TiBu, however, I'm so used to rooting and using root explorer that I'm just not willing to use anything else :good:

Thanks for the reply. I love rooting, but my brain really hates not having the absolute latest OTA updates so that is the main reason I chose not to root this phone so I'm still on the hunt for a great and simple file manager. Currently using File Manager +.

Understood bruh. However, updating with factory images is pretty easy as well with an unlocked bootloader :good:

Yeah it was so easy when I had an LG G4 then it died on me thanks to LG's awesome hardware failures so I bought a Huawei phone, rooted it and couldn't flash factory images cause it needed stock recovery for those, but I think the Pixel 2 can flash stock images through TWRP without problems so I might root it in the future.
