Thinking of buying, what should I know? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

I'm in the US so I'll have to import it. I've seen the places to buy and gearbest says 1 year of repairs. Reviews say they weasel their way out of most things though. Also saw it works on AT&T pretty well. Been comparing a bunch of phones and this one stands out the most, but I couldn't find everything I wanted to know, hoping you guys can help.
1) Is it worth considering gearbest as a warranty or consider it a no warranty purchase?
2) What about safetynet? Will things like netflix work without sideloading if I don't unlock the bootloader? Hulu, Android pay, whatever future bs starts checking it? I use my phone for Netflix plenty.
3) Is there a difference in the eu rom I've seen mentioned and global rom?
4) Assuming I'd want the global phone, do I need to flash it after that for any reason?
5) how clunky is video chat with the front camera location? Does it work well in landscape mode (preferred)?
6) did I miss anything worth knowing? ?
Thanks to whoever answers! Trying to scratch the new phone itch. Might wait to see what drops at mwc.

1) Expect no warranty at all
2) On Global Stable ROM, yes.
3) Yes. Xiaomi.EU is a community ROM based on china dev. Global ROM is an official Xiaomi ROM
4) If you buy a "global" version you don't have to flash it, it comes with global stable preinstalled. It doesn't matter what version you get though, all the same HW wise.
5) You have to turn the phone around, doesn't work in some apps (Snapchat I believe?). In landscape mode it works just as well(or bad?) as a normal front facing camera, what's the actual difference if you hold the device in landscape mode?
6) Buy this beautiful phone..

1 - As good as no warranty.
2 - flash global rom and ur good to go as it has all google services installed.
3 - Yup, global rom is the best
4 - flashing is not a big issue, u just download a file and put it in your phone and use updater app to flash it. No unlocks or tough stuff.
5 - video chat is pretty bad. Not the phone if u do lot of video chats. Front camera on whole is pretty bad to be truthful.
6- Camera should not be ur priority and stay away from this phone if u like stock interface. Other than that this phone is a beauty.

Thank you guys so much you've been really helpful!

I was thinking about waiting until after mwc to pick a phone so that's not a bad idea. Have to see how much the new one costs too, I'm on a budget and have to buy two =/

Does it do screen mirroring?

Is this phone pretty much dead on launch as far as the dev community goes?

I got this phone mostly because the hardware specs were top notch and my old Zenfone 2 (Z00A) had amazing CM support and even an official bootloader unlock. The ZS570KL still has yet to get so much as a root. Going from CM to the bloated, ugly stock ROM hasn't been fun and I can't wait to get something better. I've prodded ASUS for info on a bootloader unlock and they have basically just said that they can't comment on a release date, or if it's even coming at all.
Is there any active development for this phone or is it just dead?
it's active, but what you see here, is all answered questions that we ask already, so there isn't much we can do , until we get from asus. And then alert every develop out there to start making custom roms for this phone.
I think many people like myself are waiting on the bootloader unlock before buying. If they are going to release it, it better be soon. Else they risk newer phones coming out that trump the specs of this phone that ARE developer friendly. This ship had almost sailed to be honest. What are they waiting for?

Yeah, I'm almost regretting buying it to be honest. I really expected it to be popular in the dev community especially given ASUS' history and that bootloader unlocks are already available for the non deluxe ZF3 and even the ZS550KL. The LG V20, the other phone I was heavily considering waiting for, came out almost a month after this phone already has some ROMs coming out.
This phone has amazing specs and design but is just let down so much by terrible firmware and a completely dead dev community. It's a shame.
Your absolutely correct. Such a shame that a beast of a phone goes quietly in the night. It would've been such an upgrade from my Nexus 6P.
My wild guess is that Asus will release our unlock around April-June when phones are starting to come out with the next snapdragon chipset and 6gig ram is all over the market. At that time, the qualities that make this special will be gone. I don't understand this logic at all.
I really like this phone but all the ways Asus tried to kill its success boggles my mind. The lack of an official bootloader when all their other models have one is just another nail in the coffin of an otherwise really good phone. I thought Asus had learned their lesson... guess not.
The 3 biggest reasons for failure in the dev community:
1. No Bootloader (yet)
2. Price
3. Availability
Its dumbfounding. Such a beautiful phone with amazing specs and Asus care absolutely zero about marketing this phone outside Asia. I had to buy it online because they decided not sell it in Canada. And even online the availability is limited to Taiwan only with every reseller getting it from there in short supply. I don't even think there is a north american model. Why not have faith in your brand? Asus said they didn't think the deluxe would do well in north america with all the competition so they abandoned it. They also thought the phone would not sell because its too expensive but then realized demand for it exceeded the supply and decided to increase production.

Seems like a surefire recipe for failure to me....
I have the SD821 versian, I had to pay through the teeth to get it then when it gets shown to others thet all want to know where to get it and how much it cost. Word of mouth is a great way to do business but the product MUST be available.
I had the subforum tab open to check up on this later, but I'm updating some software right now and noticed this post title... I still have the phone unopened in the box Amazon shipped it in. I guess this is Asus' loss releasing a phone during the only extended return period of the year. I've read a few negatives on the ZF3 Deluxe like low headphone volume and intermittent Bluetooth, but unlocking is what I want.
Since I have until the end of next month to return it to Amazon I figured I would pick up the OnePlus 3T and give it a try - free 15 day return period. I thought, what the heck - I paid more for the ZF3 so why not get the 128GB 3T? Added it to my cart and on the checkout page it gave an estimated date (was within 9 days). I wanted to see what I said the ETA would be on the 64GB model that was listed as shipping within 3 weeks and removed the 128GB model. Went to add the 128GB model back in less than a minute after checking the 64GB model...sold out and it's been like for the last 2 weeks. Talk about frustrating! I ended up ordering the 64GB model and figure I can just send it back to OnePlus when the 128GB's are back in but I'm afraid they still won't be available to order at the end of January. So here is this ZF3 D I don't think I really want. :/
jsheradin, you said the bootloader is unlocked for the other ZF3 models - any idea why not this version of the Deluxe?
If it made any sense, there would be no doubt Asus wanted the ZF3 to fail.

Yep, the unlock is available for everything but the 820 and 821 variants. I assume it's simply that these processors require a little more work to make an unlock utility for, but I'm just guessing at that point.

I love the phone only had it a week but so far i have had only 1 issue with the BT disconnecting from my gear S3. only reason i want to unlock is so i can use titanium backup, if there is a good back up without root please let me know.

It does not. The ZS550KL has a single version and it is a snapdragon 625. It has the same processor as the non deluxe ZF3 (Z3520KL) which came out before the deluxes. They probably already made the unlock for the non deluxe and it required very little work to make it work for the 5.5 deluxe. The 820/821 versions did not have that luck and they likely have to make the unlock from scratch.
Hey, I agree with all on this thread. I have the Zen 2 deluxe SE with Cyangenmod and its a great phone. Purchased the Zen 3 but have yet to use it because I cannot root. I also read that Cyangenmod is no longer offering custom ROM or am I not understanding their changes? Does this mean the chances of a custom rom for Zen 3 is out? I also upgraded my wife's phone (S5) to the same Zen 3 deluxe (ZS570KL / 256gb hd / 6gb ram / 821 chip) and she hates it... calls keep dropping signal is low and it does not even say LTE. I did a speedtest comparison betwen her Zen 3 and my Zen 2 and it was faster. Hers is also disconnecting from cellular (AT&T) data and does not show 4G anymore along with no push notifications of emails.
Anyone else having these issues?
Joining in on the bandwagon to vent (really)... This was my # 1 phone to get in 2016, despite the lack of Quad HD screen (especially for the price), but Asus botched it BIG TIME! The price on the SD821 model, even more frustrating, the lack of availability, even during the holiday season, and of course, now announcing their new 2017 models, with no unlocked BLs or Root... what an opportunity missed! Would have been such a strong jab against the 3T, but they ruined it!
I bugged Asus again via email and received this response, again:
"Temporary we haven't got the accurate time the unlock tool would be released for this ZS570KL.
But we will transfer customers' wishes to the related department for further development.
Also please note that ASUS does not actually asssit with unlocking of the Android Bootloader. I must advise that you do so at your own risk, as once the boot loader is unloked it will void your warranty."
I'm just hoping there is an unofficial unlock at this point. The stock ROM seems to somehow get more buggy and slow day by day. Is anyone else having issues with the screen taking forever to turn on after using fingerprint/pressing the side button?

I used this form to submit it: https://vip.asus.com/VIP2/Services/QuestionForm/TechQuery?lang=en-us
I just said, "When can the bootloader unlock utility be expected to be released?"
They responded promptly yet disappointingly. Hopefully if enough of people ask they will finally get around to making/releasing it.
Does anybody know if there is unofficial unlock work being done?
If an unlock is ever made we just need to get someone who knows TWRP to build a recovery and ideally somebody from Lineage OS to start ROM support. I've built TWRP before for a different device and may be able to do the same for this phone but I wouldn't know where to begin to get a ROM working. I feel like no devs even know this device exists. :crying:

The biggest question we should all ask ourselves... "Why did ASUS build this phone in the first place if they didn't have a bootloader unlocker for it?"

thinking of buying one plus 3. need some info.

hello everyone. I'm thinking of buying a new phone after my g4 boot looped. this one is among one of the final choices.
so i wanted to get your view on this one as you all have been using it.
how is the speed?
the camera (front and back both)?
is the touch good?
and now down to the more deep questions.
which variant should i buy? i wanna use all features. i wanna root. i wanna unlock the bootloader. i wanna do much more. so which variant is the best?
and does it have any problems like the g4 boot loop problem?
thanks alot for your help.
I recoomend that you should wait for the OnePlus 5 (or 4) and buy that instead.

Hi first of all I know the pain of that g4 bootloop problem it happened to mine and I still haven't got a refund so I bought the oneplus 3 , the first thing you'll notice is the camera the g4's camera was amazing and oneplus 3 camera is okay but not like a DSLR and the second thing is the screen the G4 used LCD but oneplus3 uses amoled so it saves a lot of battery (with the right settings) but it's not as punchy , the good things about oneplus 3 is it's very easy to root it's covered under warranty for rooting and the development scene is really good alot of Devs work on this phone which means more goodies for us it's fast , it's light , it's not got a stupid over packed skin UI it's a very good phone , however I would rather wait til the Oneplus 5 comes out and get that or when the OP5 is released the 3t will most likely go down in price so I'd probably get that either way you'll have a decent phone.... Hope my info helped.

1. ONEPLUS 3 is quite fast. VertexOS with EAS takes it to the next level.
2. Camera both are actually quite good.. Low light is a little meh but it is not bad!
3. The touch. Well I came from A 5,5inch phone that was like a brick... This device lies in hand really good.
4. I would go for the Oneplus 3T or wait to see how expensive the Oneplus 5 is.
5. Rooting etc no problem make sure you do research first before asking questions. Oneplus covers warrenty even when rooted.
6. It does not have any problems currently. Is your G4 still under warrenty? Bootloops can just happen it doesn't mean your device is dead.

Flashing stock Mi Mix2 - previous experience

I'm thing of getting a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 however i would only do it if i was 100% sure no data collection was executed by secretly installed backdoors and services. From your experience and given that Mi Mix was out for so long, is there a way to flash stock android (downloaded from google directly) even in a few months from now when kernel is released and be 100% sure that no data is being transmitted to Xiaomi?

Google wont provide you to download a systemimage for the Mi Mix 2. I'm sure, that there will be an official LineageOS-build anytime, but there is also a backdoor possible. Even google could implement a backdoor into the system and nobody would be able to check that.

It doesn't really work that way, Google doesn't provide ROMs for any phones other than thier own. Manufacturers have to do the whole bit for drivers and whatnot. Enthusiasts do ROMs but those take time. Best bet for you is if you don't trust the phone since it is Chinese get from a manufacturer you do trust or watch rom forum here for a custom rom you think is worth trying.

Well i am currently on an iphone 7 plus. no complaints what so ever on the performance its just ios is a bit limited for me. I would love to get the pixel 2 its just that the hardware they are going to sell us does not justify it's price vs it's competitors. for example Huawei Mate 10. but even with Huawei, the data collection question arises again. i mean everyone does it, but i'd prefer to give it to google or apple rather someone else.

Will Xiaomi block unlocking bootloader forever?

What do you think? Recently, they increased waiting time to 720h...
I think this is bad practice and unfair. I can understand the waiting time as a mean of stopping ressellers from shady stuff. But it's unfair for people already waiting to be changing the damned clock all the time. I just want to get my awesome rn5 rid of MIUI. I got 360h waiting time. No problem, I was ready to wait. Now all of a sudden they double the time? Bad practice for them. How can I be sure that if I wait a month, the day I finally try to unlock I get a year? Not fair. I was a Xiaomi fan but now I will think twice before buying another one...
Oh really sure, so what phone should I buy to 250$?
Well, i think Xiaomi is not only trying to prevent resellers from flashing global roms on chinese market products but also would like the users to get used to their ecosistem, maybe after one month of usage you will not want to change rom anymore, maybe you'll decide that MIUI is not that bad as you imagined before. The MI A2/ MI A2 Lite have unlockable bootloaders via fastboot, you could get one of these if you don't want to wait. Personally i tried the Mi A2 for one month, it's not a bad phone, but suffers of several problems such as battery drain and pretty small community around it. I decided to send it back and get a Note 5 Global (Pro) for around the same price (10 euro less), since the waiting process is not a deal breaker for me.

If you tell me before I buy a Xiaomi phone - to unlock the bootloader you need to wait 1 month, 2 months ... Whatever" - I can live with that. I will wait the time and unlock, no problem.
What is unacceptable for me is having the waiting timer jump up and down randomly. Unlocking becomes a matter of luck and chance. This is not reasonable.

I think oneplus / oppo doesn't want to be operated on the china op 11 oos and will therefore not ensure that it runs clean on the op11
I'm currently on OOS A08 2449 -
1. Brightness bug
2. Battery performance noticeably worse than COS A10
3. Phone randomly shuts off
4. Refresh rate appears to be stuck and adaptive refresh rate not working
5. Fingerprint reader malfunctions occasionally
And more that I can't think of at the moment.
If this continues I'll likely go back to stock COS...

I also ran into the same problem on Oxygen.A08 - 2449.
1. Auto Brightness bug
2. Fingerprint reader malfunctions occasionally
How to fix it?
these issues appeared to be "by design".
i think it's probably better to stick with cos, and find ways to get app's to run in cos similar to in oos.

1. Brightness bug
2. Battery performance noticeably worse than COS A10
3. Phone randomly shuts off
4. Refresh rate appears to be stuck and adaptive refresh rate not working
5. Fingerprint reader malfunctions occasionally
And more that I can't think of at the moment.
If this continues I'll likely go back to stock COS...

You must be missing the point of coming to XDA.
1. A lot of people bought the Chinese version because it was launched much earlier in China.
2. It's generally much cheaper to buy a China version
3. There's no local market where I'm from in Australia
lol this is a good one, "missing the point of coming to XDA"
I think Oneplus 11 is just more troublesome with ROM this time due to the fact this is the first phone after OPPO official took over,
Previously with Oneplus, there would not not have much issue flashing to OxygenOS from the china HydrogenOS then ColorOS and is a easier process
It is also quite a norm practice for people to purchase Oneplus from China and just flash OxygenOS to use or those that purchase from aliexpress is also flashed by the seller using China set.
Now after OPPO took over, some backend stuff may have change and we dont know yet what is OPPO takes on flashing domestic Oneplus meant for China to be use in other country.
Dont think anyone should come in here and just say "if i live in china, i buy china phone, if i live out of china, i buy original OOS", to be honest this kind of comment is not helping at all when a lot of people is stuck with their phone not being able to call or they bought the phone with the intention of flashing over to OOS but is held with issue now over OTA update.
Cheers

It is users fault that they blindly buy a phone not meant for the market, especially when it is theirs only daily device and start doing some random stuff expecting everything will work as intended.
Half of the messages here on XDA OP11 is "omg I bricked my device or did something bad, plz help I have no clue what to do, I was just pressing randomly on the keyboard to make rainbows happen".
Rather than wait and see what can be done with the device by the developers, everybody want to jump on a strange COS/OOS train expecting I really don't know what? Then it turns out some of the stuff doesn't work as it should anyway.
I have a feeling many average people just have this strange and weird urge to do sth with their new phone, even if it does not make any practical sense.

Lets say for example your friend who is not verse with xda or phone custom rom, he went ahead and purchased a china imported oneplus 11 because he previously heard oneplus 10 was one of the better device and is cheaper to import from china.
Hearing that the previous gen oneplus can be flashed to oxygenos, do you think it is his fault that he blindly buy a phone?
To be honest, even if you imported the phone from china and use it as it is, it does work as everything it is supposed to be as intended.
i think the big red flag is the region call locked people is facing, without the region call locked, the phone is working exactly as how a android phone should work. no?
If one year ago you imported oneplus 10 from china when it launch, there was no problem with calling except maybe the phone come with coloros.
No one knew that oneplus 11 will get region call locked when it is brought in from china to other country use.

The whole point to buy an op is because of its "flashability".
People have problems and then they ask on XDA. That's why XDA was created.
Oneplus 11 is my first Oneplus phone, and by doing all that stuff with locking and software updates, it is my last Oneplus, I will never buy Oneplus again.
Before I bought Oneplus 10pro, Ace Pro, the Chinese version. was able convert rom to Oxygen os without any problem, no SIM lock, Then who would have thought that Oneplus 11 would have this problem?

I stand by what I wrote earlier and still think it is a user's fault to buy something in the blind. Nobody promised OP11 will be the same experience so I personally would and will wait for stable tools/guides/ways and software to optionaly change my phone's system in any way. So yes, buying sth and expecting it will be the same, especially having in mind how OP10 development support was and by taking only into consideration what is going on with Oneplus brand under Oppo, then I will repeat that is somebodys fault, inexperience, blind faith etc.
Also not a fan of importing devices from various regions just because they can be speced differently which it turned out its true with the chinese version and call blocking without local activation in cn market.
In my own opinion people are often creating problems themselves and they ask about sth that could have been avoided but of course it's a tik-tok era and everybody are impatient and they would rather start "dont-know-what-Iam-doing" with their phones rather than wait patiently for more feedback from the smart people who can thinker with their phones and release a guide what could or not be done with it.

Would you able to buy oneplus 11 512GB/12GB in North America? Nobody want to get headaches, there’s always some reason.

It was so up until the OP 8T/9. Then the flashability of OnePlus devices instantly dropped to -1.000.
