Device Nomenclature NASH - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

What does Nash mean and or stand for? I've had and developed for many phones and never seen this. Thanks for setting me straight.

Last lineup for Moto phone's was birds (Griffin, Falcon, etc) this line seems to be named after famous people (look up surnames for Nash, Sanders, Payton, American football has players and coaches of each and some basketball players as well). Just speculation. Normally codenames go for that style like Android is named after desserts.

Nash device?...not until just a week ago.
My Moto z2 has not had a "Nash" tag or any related words until recently. Why is this just coming up to the surface , and why is my Droid so "EMOTIONAL".... Literally

I'd have to say that your device, like mine, has had a Nash label on it since the day it was built. If you boot to the bootloader you will see Nash written in the actual bootloader name. Quick question, what do you mean by your Z2 is "EMOTIONAL"?

Use the edges for the directional movement, tap screen for a/b. Took me a couple of minutes to figure it out. Also been speaking with the author, should be some performance improvements coming in the next version and improved controls if enough people complain

Erm, this emulator includes ROMs... like, a lot of ROMs... and they look like commercial games.
Isn't this a problem?

Probably, but it was under review for quite some time and they passed it with the ROMs included. :s Marketplace certification is still a mystery to me.

What is the copyright on almost 30 year old games anyway (that's scary)?
Nintendo keeps their copyrights current by releasing a mario/zelda game every 2-3 years but, Adventure for the Atari 2600 ?
Atari is no longer a company, it's just a name (the orginal company is long gone, the name was sold to a software company a few years ago). Any title on the 2600/7800 has not been seen in well over 15 years for a name remake or other uses.
I really wonder what is the copyright guidelines are here....
As for the emulator goes, performace is not great on my Trophy with 7800 titles, WHen we can run NES/SMS almost perfect, this should be much better. And we do need some onscren controls, even if they are basic.

in america, we make sure phones stay within certain spec so the dont cause cancer and polute air traffic with noise. said certifications take time to tes, because it takes more then a month or two to finish. it impresses me how fast they do it, too, seeing as the cancer would take years of normal use to surface. sorry our government cares about us too slowly for you.
i don't think we moto g5+ users wilp get oreo update. We should stop thinking about this. and Should Think of buying new phones with better specs.

First, don't be rude. That will get you nowhere.
Second, Motorola doesn't have to update a damn thing. They can't be sued for not updating just because at one point they said they were considering it. They also never said when. They could keep cranking out phones and in two years claim that they're still looking into it.
Considering they can't even fix their headphone jack issue, I doubt we'll get Oreo.

You can be sued for false advertising
They can't be sued for not doing the update because it's not false advertising, nor are they under any contractual obligations
An advertisement is used to sell a product or service. Companies change their mind on updates and upgrades all the time. It's not illegal because the product wasn't sold with the promise of that upgrade.
Example: Every time there's a game developers conference, or CES or E3 there's promises of various kinds made by Sony and Microsoft, trailers for epic looking games etc. They even have working demos, yet many never see the light of day. How many times have they or the developers been sued for not releasing a planned product? Zero.

The product was sold with the promise of the software upgrade, as Motorola has stated multiple times that the g family has a policy for one major upgrade. Your example doesn't make much sense, game developers don't sell the game saying it will have a feature and then not include it. You obviously can't sue for them not releasing a planned product, unless you pre-order it and never receive a refund.

XZ1 Compact root/TA/DRM backup & restore Bounty thread created

First time I'm leading such a thing so mods, if there's a better way to lead people to the right thread, please let me know!
I've started a XZ1 & XZ1 Compact bounty thread for getting a reward pool up for anyone who can find a locked bootloader root method, TA backup & restore method or any other way to root and retain DRM features. Thought it would be great to have the bounty in a single thread for both the normal size XZ1 and XZ1 Compact since both models are very similar and obtaining root usually comes in pairs anyway since the Z1 and Z3 days.
Aside from the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact having great on-paper specs and being very appealing, I'm also fed up that the latest Xperia model where root and retain DRM is possible is the 1 year old XZ!! I'm sure some of you share the same feelings too!
When i get mine i am up for testing.
XZ1Compact is a junk i returned it sorry.
Ok, so.. this is my first time being interested in a Sony device. Long time LG user here, and I'd be all over the V30 if T-Mobile didn't lock the bootloader down. Is the purpose for this bounty solely to retain DRM keys after the bootloader unlock? I see the XZ1 is part of the Sony Open source project where they let you unlock the bootloader. I only want to root this phone for v4a and adaway.

My apologies. I was too vague in my original question. I was hoping for specifics pertaining to this model, the XZ1 Compact. I'm well aware of the proprietary Sony software lost by removing DRM keys. I know after several reviews I've read that the XZ1 does lack a couple of features that it's bigger brother.
Another question. If Sony has this open source platform set up specifically for developers to create ROM's based on this XZ1 Compact, why would Sony hinder the performance and features by not allowing you to keep the DRM keys when unlocking the bootloader in a simple fashion?
Please don't respond if my questions upset you. I've read the posts and I'm posting questions here because I'm genuinely interested in this.

Can you elaborate on what you want to know? You said you are already aware of feature loss, so what sort of specifics are you talking about?
As you said, the XZ1 Compact does not have any additional features that the bigger brother XZ1 doesn't, hence whatever DRM-reliant features are lost in the absence of DRM keys on the XZ1, the same goes for the XZ1 Compact.
Sony has never really published a list of features that will be broken, they're somewhat (purposefully) vague on this part.
The bounty thread mentions some of the most prominent features that are impacted, I urge you to take a look. As I had mentioned in my previous reply, it also answers your original question regarding the scope and goal of the bounty.

That is a question only Sony knows the answer to.
However, from a purely speculative viewpoint, it seems they think that binding some of their proprietary features to DRM keys is a way of protecting their IP.
Your phone won't actually be rendered useless after losing your DRM keys per se, you just lose the ability to utilize some of their more "advanced" toys like low light noise reduction algorithms and X-Reality, which are definitely nice to have but not "essential" features.
For AOSP ROMs, for example, Sony still provides bare bone driver support for the display and camera - perfectly functional, just not exceptional.
They opened up their phones to developers in the name of mutual benefit, but of course we know that it's more for their own sake than ours.
As for the lack of DRM-bound features in an unlocked open world, I suppose it's just their way of saying those assets are off limits, and to discourage average consumers from messing with their phones and driving up the cost and complexity of support.
Then again, just think for a minute. This is Sony we're talking about. Sony history is practically made up of anti-consumer-friendly practices with locked down, proprietary everything.
Just be grateful they're even doing this open devices thing, citizen scum dear users, and pray they don't hinder it any further.

Yeah, I completely agree. I only blame Apple for this. They've always been supreme dictator over iOS and I think larger companies like Samsung with their locked bootloaders on carrier phones and Verizon - which has no reason to lock theirs down are following suit because they can.
Ahh well, I appreciate your response. I just read an article the other day - the top three phones that are Dev friendly are the OnePlus 5T, Google Pixel and Huawei Mate 9. I'd go that route, but they are all larger phones. Guess I'm just hoping for something that doesn't exist (still!)

I had exactly your doubts but...well its not KitKat time anymore, Android Oreo is pretty much a complete OS to me...and yeah not having adblock sucks but at least I can still use AdGuard...I'm not a teenager anymore and so I wouldn't have time to mess with my phone anyway, at least not like with my previous Nexus 5...I bought xz1 Compact and have no regrets, seriously....at this point, if not for adblock, I don't have any other reason to want to root my phone...I guess I'm getting old lol

So.. I just turned 40 this year. I've been playing around with Android phones now since the HTC Eris back in 2009 (yikes!!). I travel a lot for work and carry two pair of headphones with me. One pair of IEM's and one pair of large wireless cans. The IEM's are mostly used out of convenience and sound quality.. cans when I don't want something stuck in my ear. Anyway, the point to my rambling, is back in the Samsung days, I was introduced to something called "Voodoo Sound". It was created by a dev on XDA to manipulate the hardware settings (particularly the hardware gain) for users audio. It was amazing. The point of it was to boost the volume so you could CUT frequencies on an EQ and still keep the NORMAL volume of the phone. I see so many people on here complaining to other users about why they want to boost the volume, when that's not what they are doing at all. I fell in love and held on to old phones to keep from giving that feature up. Then, it slowly vanished and Viper4Android was released by a bunch of Chinese devs. I eventually switched over. I can't live without v4a. It makes up for the shortcomings in my IEM's.
So the problem is, with all these locked bootloader phones, I can't put v4a on the phone. I usually just keep using the older phone anyway until I can't stand the sluggish performance anymore and then start hunting for a new phone. The monkey wrench this go around is that work makes me carry an iphone as well as my personal.. so I'm trying to find an all around good phone that's compact. I got real excited about this XZ1 Compact until I saw some users complaining about battery life. I am extremely hard phone a phone battery. The 3300mah battery in the ginormous V20 I have now will last me about 6 hours while traveling on the plane, through airports, etc.
My dream phone would be a utilitarian design, waterproof, good battery, good camera, small, and rootable so I can put v4a (and prob adaway). It's crazy to me how Sony is the only manufacturer that dabbles with small phones now. Sammy tried it with the S5 mini, etc years ago, not nothing since.
Having since reading this thread is just another roadblock keeping me from going out to my local Best Buy today and just buying this phone and being done with it. I'd be worried about losing these DRM keys that effect camera performance. I love taking photos while traveling of the things I see and sharing them with family.

It really is a douche move by Sony to render the camera completely useless after unlocking the bootloader.
Before the X-series line, at least with my own experience with the Z-series, UB affects the camera by disabling low-light noise reduction, but doesn't cause it to only take green pictures, it was still functional.
Well, the potentially good news is that a dev on XDA has created a DRM patch for the XZ Premium, which has similar platform configurations to the XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, and the dev mentioned in the bounty thread that he's working on bringing compatibility to the XZ1 family.
If you'd like, you can support him and make a donation pledge to incentivize him and/or other devs to find a solution.
Alternatively, the very same dev who created a DRM patch for the XZP also found some third party camera apps that works, presumably before he developed the fix.
See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/how-to/tip-camera-fix-unlocked-rooted-sony-t3647333
Or, you can just flash a AOSP build.
Or, as you are contemplating, just skip Xperias altogether. It's a world of compromises, unfortunately.

That almost makes me not want the phone lol. Just the name Foxconn sounds like something out of a governmental conspiracy book. Like it just sounds inheritantly bad. Its also a little mind blowing that the stock Android number 1 go to is a made by a Chinese brand but not marketed nor hardly known as such whatsoever and fronted as being made by Google themselves. I know it's just buisness tactics but something just feels icky about it lol.
Foxconn is actually Taiwanese
Same group makes the iPhone and others in China and other international manufacturing facilities, they are a huge corp and well known outside the US. There is little high tech manufacturing here, Sweet tax deals, reduced regulatory standards and costs, lower wages, all ensure products like this will be off-shored for the foreseeable future.Google did buy some of HTCs mobile division, this including engineering and design group employees and intellectual property. What's absent from the HTC purchase is manufacturing, not just the facilities but the design, engineering and other related support needed in manufacturing. Google can not make a phone themselves, even some of the fundamental design was partially Foxcann's province as manufacturing is brought in from the beginning of the design process. Most electronic items you pick up will have been made in China, Taiwan, Viet Nam, etc no matter what label you see on them.

Yeah, I hand't meant to spur this kind of thing. I did not say they were a Chinese company, I said they were made by them "IN" China. Whatever status Taiwan has as an independent nation and it's future is grist for a different thread on a different forum.

Stock iOS number 1 go to is manufactured by them too. As is the stock number 1 go to for Sony Playstation 4. Amazon Fire? Foxconn. Blackberry, Cisco, Dell, HP, Huawei, Xiaomi...
They're a giant manufacturing company. They receive plans designed by a company, and spit out a product at the other end (hopefully without demanding such performance as people jump off their roof). You likely use something manufactured by Foxconn every day of your life, even if you remove your phone from consideration. Very few of those items will have their name on the label, so to speak.

Something interesting from Wikipedia...
Foxconn manufactures electronic products for major American, Canadian, Chinese, Finnish and Japanese companies. Notable products manufactured by Foxconn include the BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Kindle, Nintendo 3DS, Nokia devices, Xiaomi devices, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and the TR4 CPU socket on some motherboards. As of 2012, Foxconn factories manufactured an estimated 40% of all consumer electronics sold worldwide.
Just think about that last sentence for a minute... 2 out every 5 consumer electronics device are made by Foxconn.
