Hmm, hadn't seen this setting before. I really should get a better understanding of Oreo's new settings. I searched and found a reddit link highlighting the use case:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/7lbpki/android_81_feature_developer_option_background/
The comment by "well...duh" shows what this affects in Android. From the app drawer, long press Android Pay, select Battery and observe the Background activity setting. Developer Options/Background Check flips that same switch on/off.

It's there for a good few apps like play store and services and some 3rd party services

I wonder the same thing.. on a latest pixel devices "background check" is empty and on GSI builds there are some options enabled..

Navbar

Sorry to post here instesd of Q & A. Can't find that forum on the mobile app.
Anywho, on normal android OS settings there is an option to hide the navbar for fullscreen apps. Now, the kindle seems able to do this since it does for certain apps that want to use fullscreen. However, this is not true for two things.
Firstly, landscape keyboards don't work.
Secondly, apps like skype and widgetlocker keep the nav bar open, and this cuts off part of the app. On a normal tablet selecting the allowing to hide on fullscreen option works.
Any ideas how to toggle that setting? I can't wait to have a full settings menu back...
Image included is the settings option. This is no way relates to the kindle, since, we obviously don't have a useful OS like that yet just wanted to include it in case you weren't sure on what setting i was talking about.

This question was posted before we had recoveries or custom ROMs haha. I've been running MooROM ever since it was released. This was back when we had to use that crummy Amazon OS they put on the kindles.

Long press on shortcuts of notification bar not opening more settings.

Any possibilities of long pressing on shortcuts of notification bar will open more settings ? For example if i keep pressing on WIFI shortcut it should open WIFI settings. I have not rooted my phone yet. Its running on 6.0.1. This is normally available in HTC & SAMSUNG phones.

For Wi-Fi and Bluetooth you can click on the title below the icon and it will expand to show networks and devices as well as a more settings button. At least that's what I remember of Android M. I also remember being able to long press the icons to enter the settings for the toggle. Maybe that's just for the other buttons like cellular data.

Thanks for reply. I agree those little links below WIFI and BT opens quick setting in same notification window. Then there is more setting link to open full setting options. But that is not available for location services and other shortcuts.
Also those shortcuts are hardly manageable. Only few shortcuts can be added or deleted which is also under beta. Customization option is not available. Hard to believe for 6.0 version of android.

It's "fixed" on Android N. So you have that to look forward to in October or whenever they fully release it. It's also probably available in a custom ROM if you want to go that route.

Hopefully they will fix in Android N. My Nexus 5X still under warranty. Is it worth rooting Nexus ?

Screen off memo

Hi, every time I write a screen off memo it will not show on the AOD screen. Instead will go directly into a icon. If I tap twice the icon will appear for a brief time and then go back as icon.
The time it will stay on the screen will not be combined with the date/time.
Anyone has the same? Is it a problem of the settings or csc?
Tks

Yes, same here - direct to icon. I saw review videos where the screen off memo actually remains on the display along with the always-on screen. I tried every combination (i think) of always-on display and lockscreen notification settings, but never found a way to get it to stay.
On those same videos, by the way, the main settings screen looked very much like the one of the Note 5 and not at all like Grace UX, which is what i have. So i wonder if there are different software versions out there with some serious differences.
Maybe csc related ? mine is XSG.

If you go into the always on display settings and then about it should show you an update is available. After this is downloaded it is now working correctly.
Not sure why this did not ship on the phone or they make the update more obvious.

I didn't get an update prompt, but this helped me. I opened galaxy apps and looked for updates there. sure enough, there was, and installing it fixed it. All good now!

i didn't check that, but Galaxy App pushed an update of Always-on Display yesterday, and indeed now it works the way it should
Thanks. Update worked. I was wondering why it wasn't working.

What good is the huge screen if you can't use it all?

Hi Guys,
Just moved over from a Xiaomi Mi Max 3. I'm certainly not a notch guy on phones, but it's hard to ignore a 7.2 inch screen.
I have disabled the button navigation at the bottom of the screen to maximize screen real estate, but what I notice is that pretty much every app I run wont use the space beside the camera notch. It will either go "full screen" and leave the time, date, battery etc up there, or it will black all that stuff out. In both cases the apps don't actually use any other that space up there. Google Maps for example, it runs "Full Screen" and the time and date stuff is blacked out but the app wont actually use that space. If you're not using the space for the app why not leave the normal stuff up there?
I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the apps, or the UI itself? With video apps like you tube you can zoom out to take advantage of the extra space, but most app like Chrome don't use any of this space.
I'm scratching my head on this one as maybe this is how things are on "notch" phones?
Hey
Do you have some screenshots of both cases ? i'm not sure i understand you properly. I'm planning to buy the phone but i was expecting a way to force full screen apps normally like on samsung without this kind of issues.

I think i always want to see the bar for my messages , time, battery, and signal ,, it doesn't show in videos so that's fine i think most phone always show the top bar that's what it's there for

Right, but that's the problem. Fire up Google Maps and turn the phone in landscape mode and that notification bar goes completely black. It's not being used "full screen" by google maps, it just becomes dead space not used for google maps or the notification bar.... You tube can be expanded to use this space. So I think maybe there needs to be an "expand" settings that makes all apps use this by default. Even with YouTube you have to do the expand every time...
Ah ok i see, On my phone it's turning transparent dark grey on google map for the notification bar. I agree it would be annoying if it's turning completely black even for screen burning.

Yup, Wasted space... We need to be able to use all the screen
I don't have mate 20 x yet. But with my previous phones I used to use app called gmd full screen immersive mode. To hide the top and navigation bars to use the whole screen.

I think it's because alot of apps don't support this aspect ratio.
You can try on the display setting of the notch. Choose "show notch" on the app that you want to run fullscreen

You can use ADB to force full-time immersive mode...
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.navigation=*

YES! That is perfect, it now uses the whole screen, you can even see the maps under the notification bar.
Thank you!
Really nice find. Doesn't work on browsers though, annoying lol

Keep open in background

Is there a way to have this support more than 3 apps? It's ridiculous there's a limit with the amount of ram on this phone
That's a GREAT question, and I'd love to know the answer too. I haven't found one yet though. RAM isn't an issue on this phone. Maybe they worry too many locked in memory will affect battery life too much?
Where did you learn this is the limit? I've gone days without opening an app before and when I go back to it it's right where I left off.
You could perhaps go to the battery saving menu and disable the battery saving for any apps you want to remain running. This may cause some serious background battery usage though, but It may be worth trying out. Also, try running the high performance mode. I've run that mode a lot and never noticed it causing much battery drain over the standard optimised mode.
Coming from Oneplus and using it for a long time I can tell you, the Note 10+ is probably one of the best multitasking phones I've used (including Note 9). Chrome on this hardly ever closes in the background and find it always running and available with all the tabs open. Oneplus phones can hardly keep anything in memory / background loaded for more than 5 mins but but Oneplus phones feel sooooo much more responsive and snappy comparatively otherwise.
The default for background apps is set to, "standard." Which allows more than 3 background apps.
Go into Device Care - > Battery - > App power management
Some apps may have been automatically added to sleep or deep sleep.
You can add or remove apps as needed.

After you add three to "Keep open for quick launching" the option becomes greyed out.
You're right, it's generally not an issue where apps get closed down in the background anyway, but I normally have 4 or 5 that I always wanted 'pinned' to my recents list. Not a big deal, I just found the limit strange, given the phone's capabiities and hardware.

How do you get " keep open for quick launching “ , I only get lock app instead , I'm running one ui 2.1 june security patch ” picture attached ”
Anyway you can bypass this using good lock app from galaxy store and use the module multistar and toggle on ”long live apps”

I'm also on One UI 2.1, June security patch. Screenshot of my menu option is attached. Maybe it's different between countries/regions/models? Mine is the Canadian N975W.
Edit: attachments aren't working, here's a link to the screenshot: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AqdgaMVMg2EMirgLXMqey1V1d0Gsdg?e=RGdVeX
I have three settings :
Put apps to sleep
Put apps to deep sleep
Apps that are not put to sleep.
I can add as many as i want in here.
There's an option to Goodlock's Task Changer to keep an app open which is a setting you don't have anywhere else in the system.
But i don't have that long live app in Multistar on my end.
Sorry for digging this up but do all of your apps appear in the "Apps that never sleep" list of apps?
I'm missing quite a few of my apps, aProfiles and Philips Hue for a start...
Anyone has noticed that before? Thnx
