how to fix probleme can't write access to external sd on android 6 HTC M8 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi to all
how to fix probleme can't write access to external sd on android 6 HTC M8
i try many tutorial but no one work with apk with xposed
is there any solution

I'm not clear: Are you trying to grant SD card write permission to xposed? Or tried to use xposed to fix the SD card write problem?
Not personally an xposed user. But if you have general issue with other apps not being able to write to SD card, I might be able to help.

Changing your backup location in TB is a bit convoluted, and a pain in the rear. I just had to do this on another device a couple weeks ago, and had to fumble with it for a while before getting it right.
In TB, press Menu, select Preferences, then select "Backup folder location". Tap "Click to Change" (auto detect never seems to "see" the SD card). Then you will see different file system options. Honestly, I don't completely understand the differences between them. I picked "DocumentProvider storage". Then I tapped the 3-line menu button on the upper right. Selected the SD card, and tapped "Select" button on the lower right. After that, I was able to "see" the SD card in TB and read/write to the SD card.
Now, your description of apps not detecting the SD at all, or saying it writes to the SD, but no files show up, is a bit more worrisome. It suggests more than a permissions problem. Might make sense to format the SD card. Be sure to copy/backup any important data on the SD (if that is needed or even possible at this point) before formatting. Since formatting will erase all data on the SD.

The first time you try to save a file (or create folder) in ES Explorer, does the file selector appear (and lets you select the SD card)?

Strange. I haven't had this problem. Do you happen to have another SD card to try?
Stock ROM, or any mods?

[Q] Why is my sdcard named M-^|PNG^M^J^Z^J?

When I get prompted to allow SD write permissions when accessing my newly formatted sdcard, the name of the sdcard appears as M-^|PNG^M^J^Z^J. This is on V20i of stock rom.
Why?
Just rename it.. How is this a problem for you?
Where do I rename it? I couldn't see.
Edit: Wipe in twrp made it appear as "sdcard" so I'm happy now
Rename using PC!

Hi, pal! I have the same problem: when sd maid request to allow SD write permissions, the name of the sdcard appears as M-^|PNG^M^J^Z^J. My phone is samsung sm-a300fu with 5.0.2 stock rom. Did you do full wipe (clear user data)?
I can't rmemeber exactly but I think I just wiped the sdcard in twrp after moving the files onto my pc.
Same on xperia e5.
This thing happens when you set up your phone the first time after flashing a ROM i.e M or N versions or inserting a newly formatted memory card, or just a card that hasn't been used before on the device . If you ignore the msg that pops up about setting up the new memory card detected. the android system names it in this way by default. (I don't know why they choose this name, it hasn't been clarified anywhere over the Internet) although it doesn't cause any error that I have encountered still it's an annoying thing.
formatting the memory card is not an option for me, and renaming the card doesn't work, I need a better solution to change this annoying default name. that data must be stored somewhere on the device itself where I can change it. anyone has any clue?

Titanium Backup and Temporary CWM not reading/writing to SD card

I started getting the error yesterday when I went into titanium backup to backup my apps before updating. It kept giving an error saying the SD card was out of free space. I formatted it, and reinstalled Titanium Backup but I still keep getting the error. When I select the backup location it says the SD card can't be written on. Temporary CWM also can't flash zip files off the SD card. It recognizes that it is seated, but selecting it just sends me back to the previous menu. But Spotify and the camera app have no issues reading/writing to the SD card. I'm using the 64GB Samsung pro sd card with a 16GB North American Zenfone.
For TiBu, try adding the media_rw line on external storage in permissions.
Posted using my phone.

Just checking, if it's rooted did you run the kitkat sd fix app in the playstore? It's a problem imposed by google as they don't want us using sd cards anymore...

No I didn't. Thanks for the suggestion it works now for Titanium Backup, I have tried temp CWM yet.
If you want to backup your apps on a SDCard with TB, You have to choose the backup directory. See pictures in attachement to proceed.
Sorry, my TB is in French but you can easily find the same repertory I guess
Step 1 : Go to "menu", then press "preferences"
Step 2 : Click to change the storage
Step 3 : Choose to storage with "DocumentProvider"
Step 4 : Choose the SD Card and the "TitaniumBackup" directory
Step 5 : Press "use the current folder", press "yes" when the popup appears.
Step 6 : Aaaaaaaaaaaand it's done !
It worked for me, all my apps are saved on the SDCard :good:

Problems with External SD Card

Ever since I converted to GPE for 6.0 then back to Sense (5.0.1 stock, rooted) I have been facing problems with my external SD Card. I know that Marshmallow handles External SD Cards a little bit differently than other versions of Android, so I decided to backup everything to my computer and then have my device format the SD card inside Sense but it still did not work.
For one thing, I can no longer backup from Titanium Backup to my External SD Card since it says "this folder is not writable" and whenever I try to delete or move anything inside ES File Explorer, a message comes up saying "please choose the root directory of ext_sd card ...." and when I try to, I get a "Documents Force Closed" error.
Any ideas on what I could do at this point? Should I try formatting the SD Card on my computer using a SD Card reader instead? I am using a Mac, by the way.
Thanks for your time.

@TarekElsakka - I know I'm bumping this thread, however I hope this is taken with leniency as searching for a solution took me a while and I hope this reply will help those who Google for the same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59278548&postcount=4 is what you need to read. You need to explicitly change your storage provider to 'DocumentProvider storage'.

@ThePurpleK thank you for your information! I actually forgot all about this thread, but I found this solution a while ago and it fixed everything for me. Thank you again, I'm sure it will be helpful to a lot of people since everyone seems to be facing that problem with MM.
Interesting. I never knew that was even a setting in TiBu either. What I did was a little more involved. Had to edit /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml) and add a specific entry to allow a group permission to write to external storage. Check the attached image. Of course I added the highlights.

I think you missed what they were talking about.
What you suggest is not valid for android 6.0 marshmallow.
Only workable for lollipop and lower.
You're right about that. I'm not on MM yet (Verizon...) so I hadn't a clue.

Grrrrrr @ marshmallow.

Ok, so this morning trying to get my backup util to access my sd card to restore my apps after MM flash, i somehow wiped my 32GB ds card, owwww, all my collecterd roms, ringtones, mods the lot, gone.
Can someone please advise me how i can get my apps to recognise my sd, and more to the point, MM renamed my SD card to PNG, and wont let me rename it, so annoyed, was bad enough when they pulled the KK nonsense, but now MM is worse, how can i gain r/w permissions on my sd withouth converting it to internal storage, before i launch my phone at a wall.

Go into Settings>Apps, select the specific app, then go to Permissions and toggle "Access Storage".

Done that, using MYBACKUP ROOT, but no matter what, it only shows the emulated\0 option (int sd), when i try to alter the path in settings to ext-sd it gives me a path is not valid error, so, most of my stuff can acced the sd, r/w, except this one app that ised to backup all my utils, contacts etc etc, works under LP and KK, so i know its to do with MM.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S1 SD card permission

Hello Group,
I am unable to access the sd card on my S1. I have tried the tips I can find online like formatting the card but nothing seems to work, I continue to receive
"grant access to sd card error "messages.
I have spent a week searching but can't find a fix.
I want to be able to insert an sd card by otg and copy photos to an sd card inserted into the tab. Do I need to root the tablet for this to work?
Thanks for your time
Model # SMT700
Android version 6.0.1
Kernel 3.4.39
Does it show up in the device storage in settings? Is the capacity correctly read?
Is it an error message, or is it just wanting you to follow some steps? It should pop up the default file manager. Then you need to go to the SD card and hit select.
Hello , thanks for the reply.
Yes it shows up in file manager and I can format it. Some file managers I have tried can select it and create a directory on some cant. Both the programs
I want to use say to select the card but then come up with the error message card not selected.
The programs I want to use work fine on a LG phone with a later firmware. So It must be a Samsung Issue or Marshmellow issue I think.

Have you used this file manager to access the internal SD card before? Usually that dialog is for the internal sd card, and not otg.
Can you record a video of what you are doing?
