Giving my Z2 to Mom, How to make it fool proof? Suggest ROM and Apps Details inside - Lenovo ZUK Z2 (Plus) Questions & Answers

The requirements are simple – everything should just work fine. Requirements include games like Subway Surfers and such, browsing the web, YouTube and working camera. For me I am getting a Mi A1 or Redmi Note 5 Pro (I don’t like MIUI though but for the price I can compromise and it seems the best choice, there are no other options at that price, please suggest if you have other device in mind. Also in future I can Install ROMs on Note 5 Pro also, so yeah).
Below are my few ideas:
Stock ZUI EN 2.0.133 ST because it is more stable than Nougat variant. With ZUI I am planning on installing the Material Notification Shade app to fix the disappearing notifications icons issue but in my testing I found it to be using almost 50% of the battery, therefore I am scrapping ZUI idea. Also ZUI feels a bit cluttered too. If the notification shade app can be made to consume less battery then I will go with it though. I know ZUI with Oreo is around the corner but it's ZUI after all.
I am currently using AEX 5.2. It is quite stable but has good overnight battery drain, like ~15% sometimes. Yesterday I slept at 3 am with 82% and woke up with 68% battery at 10 am. Also there is the camera problem. I have been using the Modded GCAM and it is GREAT! Only problem is the videos, unusable slow motion and normal videos come dark and they are unusable as well. BUT for videos I use OnePlus’ camera app and it is good but I can’t see mom using camera without getting confused So I am ready to forgo the camera2api magic and install a non-frills camera.
So for Camera please suggest an all-rounder workable camera application that I can install in the system or as priv-app and also any suggestion for the battery drain.
I am looking at some other ROMs as well. I want to test some ROMs that just work. I have been hearing about ViperOS and H2OS for some time that they are great. I just need a ROM that will work, no bells and whistles needed. So please Suggest some ROMs.
If you have any other suggestion then please let me know.

I did use 4.6 way back and here is what i found if i recall:
In notification shade when you swipe the notification it stutters.
I don't remember about the heating issue though.
It was stuttery in general now that i remember, i had to flash Heliox Kernel for the heating issue and there was no improvement in the performance.
4.4 was quite good if i remember it correctly.
Anyways thanks i think i might revisit this ROM

I just flashed ViperOS with stock gapps. Too much heating and user interface stutter and lag.

I do not have any battery drain. 1 percent at nigth on airplane mode . Check ur apps.
8 h of sot on aex 5.2.

you can use deodexed zui 3.5 oreo oreo zui is far better than nougat zui

I have to say, just ask your mum about her preferences of what she likes to use out of the phone.
And install barebone AOSP-ish rom with adblock/popup block/youtube ad-block on it. Then get her apps installed and she'll be happy. No complexities whatsoever.
Our elders aren't picky as us , my mum is using an LG G3 and its been on fulmics rom from day one, and it works perfect for her because all she does is follow up daily news, youtube, browse some internet, watch some episodes and thats it.
Also a 5.5" or 6" screen is ideal for our elders because of good visiblity of text etc.

For stuttering issue, use HelioX kernel. You'll get the best performance+battery efficiency out of AEX 4.6.
If you want good camera, flash this camera oss.zip from here and use Pixel Camera mod by Arnova. Then you're good to go.

Adaway for adblock (it blocks adfly links too)
YouTube adblock is Xposed module.
Popups and their popup links are blocked by adaway too , well most of them.

I'm using the rom as it is, with its own kernel (it's heliox btw). The rest is up to you, I'm using gapps pico, magisk just to have root and remove ads with adaway and gcam mod

just use viper os 3.1.1 with heliox 10/15 ..

Nitrogen OS Would be the Best! But there isn't any solution to Dark Videos as yet. Still you can use Proshot or Footej Camera for the Job.

Need ROM suggestions

I play a lot of PUBG mobile. So please suggest me some ROMs that have good performance and battery life and don't have issues with touch or audio via the jack. Camera and customisation features don't have high priority
just wanted to know the same.. I was on 9.2.13 for a couple of weeks and upgraded to masik 2.2 miui 10 based... Let me tell u that miui 9.2.13 was like a god of battery backup and pubg ....and now this masik has **** backup but its smooth
I would recommend Bootleggers ROM - a personal favorite. I haven't tried all the ROMs but this ROm has just enough customizations and smoothness to make it the best for me.
I love Pixel Experience. Almost stable, no need to install gapps and mi a1 camera preinstalled ?

So far, ive been tried a bunch of custom rom on whyred like RR, AOSIP, AEX, PIXEL with custom or stock kernel, and all of them consume more battery than MIUI when playing PUBG
If you want long lasting battery when play PUBG without pluging charger to the phone when play, just stick with MIUI, it can hold up to 6hr playing PUBG compared to 5hr when using custom ROM. Ive tested this using 100% mobile data, not wifi. Maybe more SOT given up to 1hr when using WiFi
I think MIUI kernel is the point why the battery is so good on it but lack of good performance when gaming compared to custom. Maybe thats the reason.
Till now, i still testing on different custom rom and kernel to find some setting that close to MIUI battery backup.
So i suggest just stick with MIUI if you want more long lasting battery when play PUBG.
If you dont want audio or touch issues, use MIUI 9.5.17 instead the other. No ARB, loud audio when play PUBG, good battery backup too.
Hope you understand what im saying, i dont speak english very well.

Mi A1 camera is ready to use and fully functional. I have not made a comparison but surely gcam is better for other reasons and no, you need to install magisk yourself.
i was about to ask the same question too.
tried a lots of custom rom/kernel xcept miui based , all are same touch issue when playing pubg. sometimes the touch going crazy .

I've read that Pubg is not optimized very good for gaming, a lot of people complain about it running bad and hot.
Also you have to remove PIE is a new Android system and it's not as Mature as Oreo, so there are going to be possibly more bugs, until it matures, so if it does run hotter for gaming then Oreo, this could be the reason...

Downgrade to whichever Oreo rom you were using for gaming and wait for Pie to catch up. It may take a few months until that happens.

Yes it's true!
Pubg and Asphalt 8 made my phone just a little warm, I could hardly feel any temparture.
The ROM is finished, I am now testing, so unless I see something wrong and I have to fix something, it will hopefully be on XDA soon. I am being very thorough checking everything. It's basically OOS stripped down, so there shouldn't be any issues unless someone wants to use something that is very heavily dependant on the Google Framework, that microG isn't handling.
It should be whatever bugs/issues that OOS has, it's the same, but faster/smoother, better battery... The Google Framework pulls a lot of resources and performance from a phone.
It has F-Droid installed instead of the Play Store, and with F-Droid you can install either Aurora Store, or Yalp Store, which they both download directly off the Play Store servers so you can download free apps. Play Store can still be added in...
I don't want much of any Google in the phone, trying to make it light, fast, private and more secure away from Google, the same idea that LineageOS microG is doing!.
If you don't know microG then you should read some about this;
https://microg.org/
https://lineage.microg.org/
There isn't even a browser in it, I think browsers are very subjective and the idea here is to give the end-users something that they can really make their own, install their own apps, so it's just the OOS basics.
But because of the OOS firmware and some of the Google it needs, the size is 1.1GB. 624MB have been debloated from OOS, which is originally 1.6GB.
I've attached a screen shot of the App Drawer.
Looks great! OOS Lite MicroG. Minimalist, like my app drawer. Were you able to remove all of the OP analytics bits? Will you use FAKE_PACKAGE_SIGNATURE? Will the rom be deodexed or just the framework? I guess I should hold off on the questions until you post the rom. Looking forward to it.

Full ROM Deodex!
I can remove all the OP analytics, and I really questioned myself on this, but for the sake of keeping OOS functionality like log/bug reports, etc... I left all of it. Maybe I should take a poll and ask what the majority want out of this... hmm
services.jar is patched for sig spoof so yes it uses the permissions of FAKE_PACKAGE_SIGNATURE.

Deodex, debloated, Gapps free microG rom, all about performance!
Based from OOS 5.1.7 Oreo.
So yes minimalistic, but not meaning loss of function, do everything without the Google Framework....
Use google services without the framework, microG as the replacement.
I've been doing microG before Lineage did this, so you can see what they do, same concept;

If its so good, why is there no big discussion thread on it here? Any rom without a big discussion thread where users can report their experiences or issues, tips, fixes, etc, is like flashing a rom on the blind. Maybe it is a good rom, but I need to hear that from at least a 100 other users, and only a big discussion thread can reveal that.

Question [Solved] Facing so much UI lags on Stock MIUI!

Have you guys ever experienced any lags in the UI?
Especially when I'm unlocking my phone, opening notifications shade or going to the recent apps screen (with gestures), it's like I'm using a very old device with a 1 GB RAM and It's driving me crazy!
I used to set up work profile using Shelter, turned off MIUI Optimisation (to have the REAL always-on display) and was using super wallpapers somehow and I thought it makes my phone slow.
Today I did a factory reset, and guess what, nothing was changed!
Even at the very first step which I didn't even install any applications, lags are clearly visible.
I'm using the stock ROM and never tried to unlock the bootloader or flashing custom recovery.
Please help me. I've tried any possible solutions including factory reset.
I even compared this device with a Mi Note 8 in the same condition and the Note 8 had a better performance. Or maybe these lags are normal on this device!
Do you have any idea?
Thanks.

Thanks.

On latest build(global rom) right. But it only happen when the battery level is below 60%. I noticed it and moved to custom rom because of it. Install cpu frequency monitoring app like devcheck, the big cores are turned off(hotplugged), that's the cause of lags. Above 60% battery, everything is normal(no hotplug). I have no idea how to fix it, assuming that it's a bug.
Yeah, the UI after 12.5.5 update definitely lags, which is disappointing.

Thanks dear gingerboy.
But it happens all the time, no matter how much the battery level is.
Which custom ROM do you prefer? Is it stable and completely bugless?
And also, do you know any app that can messure my device's performance and compare it with other's?

I use devcheck to see the cpu, not sure if there's any reliable benchmark app for ui. Currently using xperience project. Not much choices for our phone yet, so can't really suggest. The rom is stable enough for daily use, but camera is not perfect, need to use ported gcam for basic features (ultrawide cam etc).

I think I should wait for the next MIUI update, hope Xiaomi fixes those bugs. If not I'm going to flash some android 12 based custom ROMs when they've been developed at the stable stage.
Anyway, thanks for your help bro.

Ohh thank you so much, let me try..
I have just updated MIUI 12.5.6 and the lagging problem still exists, I can't use Gmail, Twitter etc just because of the lagging..
I also wiped dalvik/cache after the update.
Finally, back to 'superman' feeling with 12.5.6... last update was big time sucks

Did you guys found any solution???
Currently using xiaomi.eu 13.0.4
It's performance is same as the MIUI 13 and the lags are still exist!
What ROM are you using? Is it more stable?

I'm using PE for couple of weeks. It's very smooth and fast, good battery life. There is unexplained occasional freezes, which I suspect is somehow related to YoutubeVanced (because that's mostly what I'm using when phone freezes). Other than that, it was best decision to move to PE.

Thanks.
I faced such crash issues with crDroid 8.2 and I'm not sure that's due to YoutubeVanced because I don't have this app.
Anyway, I'm going to flash Pixel Experience in some weeks and give it a try.
Does the camera work fine with no issues? Which camera app are you using?

I'm not using camera that much, but both stock camera (which has very little functionality) and Gcam for Mi11 lite works.
Honestly, flashing PE android 12 has fixed most of the issues I had with this phone (framedrops, weird miui power saving that limits some apps to 60hz for some reason, overall smoothness and speed, weird auto brightness...). Its just a better experience for this phone in my opinion. MIUI is only decent on phones with high end chips and even then its kinda bad.
I realised that using Super Wallpapers on xiaomi.eu ROM causes lags and bugs.
Lags are gone after I set another wallpaper.
So ...
That's it.

Never used Super Wallpapers myself, I doubt that was it.
In my opinion this version of miui 13 is still not working perfectly. I mainly noticed several problems with the smoothness of the system that don't exist in Miui version 12.5. Yesterday I installed the PE12 version and I have no complaints, great battery and performance.

Need a custom ROM -- help me

I hate the stock rom of A2 Lite. Too slow and the background apps keep reloading. I need a custom rom, I already asked on other threads and no one seems to care. I'm a noob, never flashed so I don't have experience and the support is terrible around here. Please tell me which custom rom works fast and stable as of now. I need Gapps and Instagram to work, banking app, google maps. Also no bugs with incoming calls, audio or fingerprint sensor please. I don't care if it's A11 or A12, it just needs to have fast performance, battery life and background optimization. And most of all Instagram, since all the mods seem unable to run it decently. I ask for your help, thanks in advance.
Try Derpfest 12. Daily driving it currently, and still pretty good. Reminds you tho that this 5-year-old phone is already kinda slow in general because of the old hardware, so it aint gonna fix it like magic.

Thank you, I'll give it a try. How does it work with ram management?

Not great, not terrible. I tried a lot of ROMs (especially Android 11 and 12) and safe to say I can't tell the difference between them. So-so, if you ask me.

So you mean it only changes the aesthetics? If that's the case I'd rather stay on stock rom at this point..

I've long gone with stock ROM so I can't compare it. I've heard that Android 12 have more optimization compared to 11 though.
But again back to my point: even though it might fix some of your ROM bugs and hiccups - it's still not magic. Mi A2 Lite is a 5-years-old budget phone. I still got some slowdowns and crashes, no matter what ROM I use.
I mainly change my ROM because I need some features that only available in Android 11 (or 12).
If you need stability you can go back to the original android 8 rom where this phone was fantastic
For my part i need the settings of dnd that where implemented on android 10
