Pixel 2 XL network speed variances - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hey guys I'm creating this thread because I'm noticing dramatic differences in my data speeds compared to other devices. I was with a friend who has a Galaxy s8 plus and we did a network speed test using the speed test app. He was hitting around 17 Mbps where I was hitting only 3 in the same exact area. Is this common, if not is there any fixes? Are you guys experiencing similar variances in Mobile speed?

Not sure. I assume you are on the same network provider, and the app used the same server (which you can easily change)
Outside of that, would need to confirm you are on the same tower. there can be overlap with coverage and you could be on a more congested one.
Just my 2 cents

Okay so i have a 40 mbps wifi plan and on speedtest app i can max get is 10-14mbps, i confirmed on iPhone 8plus 6 plus nexus 6p all getting 35+ mbps with same no. Of devices connected
What is happening?
Tested on my friends pixel 2 smaller one he is getting 34-36 mbps
It has been 2+ months since i bought this device but didn't noticed it earlier
I have tested on another site as well get about the same speed
I posted this in my own thread weeks ago but no one commented anything

Yes we are we're both on the same ATT network and we did make sure it was the same server in the app.

[Q] Slow data speed on 3 UK - any fixes?

Hi all,
I’m having really poor signal and slow internet connection on 3 network around North London area in the open (2/3 bars), and no data connection inside my house even in rooms with large windows. I’ve spend 2 hours on the phone with 3 technical support yesterday trying to solve this problem without any success. They are currently looking into this to see if they can fix it for me in the next couple of days.
I’ve tried the 3 sim in my Note with similar slow speed, so I can assume the handset is fine, and it must be a problem with 3 network. But since the 3 operator told me they have excellent coverage in my area and there is no engineering working taking place, I’m guessing this is the speed I can expect on their network, which is a shame since I choose 3 mainly for the unlimited internet package.
I’ve add couple of screen shots between Vodafone sim in the Note against 3 sim in the One X. The shocking thing is the 3 speed is much better than yesterday where it never reached over 1 mbps down.
Can somebody share some 3 network speed around north London please and any suggestion on how to solve this is greatly appreciated.
Many thanks for reading this long post, and happy Easter everyone.
3 is the slowest network in the uk it is well known thats why they offer cheapest plans. Personally i would have got a free payg sim from them first to test data speeds. Only thing u can do is send it back if u have a cooling off period

I did brought the One X as pay as you go from them with £15 p/m rolling contract. My plan is wait after Easter and if the problem is not solved, I'll ask for 3 to cancel my rolling contract and unlock the One X for free so I can use it on other networks.
I'd like to stay on 3 if they can match Vodafone speed, as I want to stream music from Google and upload pictures to Dropbox due to the limited storage space on the One X.
What kind of speeds are you getting? I've been with Three for a while now, and always had good data speeds and connection APART from when I am up near Hampstead, which might be where you are.
Anyway, these are the speeds I am getting in West London

I have posted a thread about weak signal too - and I am on Orange.
Also, I assume three are quite slow anyway - and I doubt the unlimited plans help them out there.
*Also, feel lucky my average speed where I live is 1.9mbps on a mobile connection! Your old speed on Vodaphone is the same as my speed on broadband
On the brightside your ping seems to be better

Thanks.
I work near Hampstead, so that is not good new, have to do some more tests when I'm back to work after Easter. I live in Barnet with is 7 miles further North.
I'll be happy to get 4-5 mbps down, 1 mpbs and ping around 200 ms, this way I can stream music and upload photos.

The One X's WIFI signal seems no worse than my other mobile devices, and my 3 sim works just as bad in my Note, so I'm no sure about One X mobile signal strength.
I'd stay with Vodafone except they only allow 1GB p/m max for data usage, I think I'll try out Talkmobile as they use Vodafone network and have larger data allowance.

Wifi signal has been excellent - just mobile data signal has been really shoddy (generally 1/2 bar max - getting 3/4 on my Milestone)

Same here, 1 or 2 bars out of 5 inside of the house with no data connection, and 2 to 3 bars outside. I think it is a problem with 3 and not the phone as I'm getting the same poor signal with 3 sim in my Note, where as the Note gets full bars with Vodafone sim in it.
I made a speedtest today in a well covered area and I am impressed. ;-)
Country: Austria
Operator: Drei (Three)
hmm this seams quite worrying, is this typical speed for people one 3? I thought they had their network HSDPA+ enabled so should be seeing good speeds provided you had the signal.
I am getting about 8Meg down and 3Meg up. I have never seen such high upload speed before I got the One X....download speed seems much the same.
Also I have noticed that the One X seems to show fewer signal bars than previous handsets I have used but still works in all the same places. The One X drops to 3G data vs HSDPA(+) when not much data is passing through to save battery power.
I can't comment on the signal strength in London, but I travel between Lincolnshire - Hull and the coastal regions (Bridlington, Withernsea, etc) and in most locations, even if the signal isn't the strongest, the speed is blisteringly fast.
This is a test I just ran and I wasn't even on a 3G signal, only 2 bars on H.
hmm sounds to me then like the may have a few cell sites that need a back haul upgrade on their fibre links.
Probably to be expected in London and other area's with high population density.
Guys you get some good speeds on 3 compared to T-Mobile network 0.46 download, 0.13 upload. This is obviously within my house and signal has always been poor.
Got about 3Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up average in Salford on 3 UK. Pretty decent to me.
My results were from sitting in my living room.
Sent from my HTC One X
These are my results from North West England, indoors -
Download: 5.37 Mbps
Upload: 1.56 Mbps
Ping: 160 ms
Though it does vary a bit.
I went back to the 3 store this afternoon to get a new micro sim card, as the original sim card was cut by the staff from a normal sim, so there might be a chance it wasn't cut properly.
However, the phone with the new sim still produce slow data speed of less than 1mpbs down and 0.05 mbps up. The interesting things is while in the 3 store the speed test was over 6 mpbs down and 2 up with 78 ms ping.
im on 3 and i live in a little village in the middle of no were, and my speeds are very fast have never had an issue with my 3 network at all.

Super slow 4g speed with full signal strength

Just got my tmobile note 2. I have at least tested at 2 different locations where I see full 4 bars of 4g signal and my download speed is less than 500k!
Anyone saw similar issue?

I'm in a "4G" area but I almost always see UMTS:3 there. I get 3-5 Mbps. Sometimes I see hspda:15, and I have seen 17Mbps.
My guess is you're on UMTS.
I'm sure it's all area driven. I'm considering switching to TMobile with this Note because the savings are incredible, but the coverage and speed compared to Verizon are absurd no matter where I go. Very disappointing.

Depends where you live. I live in metropolitan CA and WA, so... 25mbps over 4G for me
You get what you pay for. In any case, you can always go pre-paid or month to month, just no subsidies.

I have been in similar situations before. I get 4g full bar but less than 300kpbs near a local shopping plaza. Less than 1/8 mile away I get 12mbps speeds. Go figure. I was testing out on both my Galaxy S2 and Galaxy S3 same time so it is definitely not a phone problem.
I hate to say it, but this phone's speeds just aren't acceptable to me after using LTE. Sounds like a whiny sort of complaint, but spending this much on a superphone..I did about a billion speedtests around eastern MI and it was rare to catch a good 4G signal like they demoed in the store. They also seem to have issues with their signal penetrating buildings. I love the phone, and would love to get away from Verizon and maybe use the new Nexus device too but they aren't there yet for me.

I'd think here it would be at least as stable. But even at best I got 7 down. For comparison in a old wood frame house downstairs I'd get 22 on Verizon where the Note pulls 2g. Maddening as the more I see what they do with their phones the less I want to stay with them.

Last night was averaging 29mbps and highest was 31.59mbps in the burbs of Chicago. Yet when I am in Downtown Chicago which supposedly has 42mbps, I only get 5-8mbps.
I travel all over the east coast for work, and know T-Mobiles network inside and out. I travel to small cities as much as big cities, so being able to connect to a network is important. If I were new to T-Mobile, and the Note 2 was my first phone, I'd think T-mobiles network sucked. I have 2 lines, a Sensation I use to mainly to tether with (10gb plan), and my main line the Galaxy Note 2 (unlimited 4g plan). I keep getting a message saying, "not connected to network" in areas where I should definitely be on the edge network, or roaming. The Sensation will be connected on a network when the Note will give the not connected message. My overall speeds in 4g areas are better with the Note than the Sensation, but not in secluded areas.
When the Sensation first came out, it wasn't connecting to T-Mobiles network correctly, then they sent out an update that fixed the problems. My first couple of weeks with the Sensation were hell because of that. Now I'm dealing with it again with the Note 2. I'm hoping that they fixed the data issues in the first ota update, which I hope happens soon.
Here are some speeds I've gotten in the past few days...
Dothan Al - 2.03 mbps
Jacksonville FL suburbs - 17.69
Harrisburg PA - 5.45
Chattanooga TN - 2.31
us231 on FL/AL border - .88
Atlanta 14.81
Jacksonville and Charlotte has better speeds than Philly. I've yet to find a place with over 20mbps

Yeah i live in fort meyer and my coverage is pretty damn good...
My area is rated good to excellent according to T-Mobile, but that obviously is subjective. The step back from LTE just isn't doable for me on a premium device. I'm glad I learned that while i had time to back out. I understand better what a huge sacrifice of tech it is on the Nexus phone now. But I envy those it doesn't impact obviously.
It could always be worse op. I'm currently with sprint but will be switching to tmo in a little while so I've been lurking the forums. I have the nexus, a 4g lte phone and I pay for unlimited data, yet I only average 200kbps on 3g, and Saint Louis will be lucky to see sprint lte by the end of 2013.

Tmobile 4G slow connectivity speed

Since T-mobile live chat did help one bit (background info will be provided shortly), I figure I'll ask the helpful people on XDA.
Trouble: I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (t-mobile variant) running the latest update that is suppose to enable LTE (updated through kies). On 3 to 4 bars out of 4 bars of 4G signal, my download speed varies from 0.05 mbps (when I initially got them in nov 2012) to 5 mbps according to speedtest.net; however, I have seen download speed of 12mbps, but that is only around a local T-mobile store. My 2 locations that I always test are all within 1 hour driving from downtown Los Angeles (with the closest one being only 10 minutes drive) and both city are in populated area, so both cities should provide pretty good HSPA+ signal. The only possibility for the cause that I can think of is the modification to t-mobile's 1900 band, but an employee at a local T-mobile store told me that the Galaxy Note 2 shouldn't be affected by this unless there is a special case. But problem is, I almost never seen a connection speed that goes past 7mbps on my phone.
What T-mobile live chat told me: I won't post the entire chat history unless people really want to see and give yourself some palm to face, so here is a very accurate summary of it. 1) it is very reasonable to be running at a download speed of 0.2 mbps on a full bar of 4G HSPA+ 42 signal on my galaxy note 2. 2) I will be stuck with this speed until LTE rolls out. 3) YES my speed WILL BE THE SAME as my iPhone 3G running on EDGE network from 4 years ago. (I asked #3 as part of a joke because I am just so speechless before that point, and the person actually agreed with that statement) Throughout this chat session, I was provided with links to troubleshoot and possible explanations. One link stated the situation where you go over your data limit, which I have used 1.4GB out of my 5GB data plan.
TL;DR (too long; didn't read): 4G speed on note 2 really slow (read the numbers in the 1st paragraph) and t-mobile live chat representative is completely clueless (funny read if you have time)
Same issue here, ive been experiencing it since December last year. At first I got 0.00mb for weeks when normally I would get 8mb to 15mb down. Tmo requested a service ticket which by the way is still open. According to them work is being done on the towers but its been months now. Ill stick with tmobile, I know they'll make it right. As of now my phone will either get 3mb down or network errors.

Other than 3 or 4 specific areas, I have yet to see a speed past 8mpbs, even 6 to 7mpbs are rare. When I upgraded from my Vibrant to the Sensation, I was under the impression that because of the Sensation's radio, that my speeds would be doubled because it had HSPA+ 21. Then I got the S3 and now the Note 2 and assumed the HSPA+42 radio would double my speeds again. Sadly, that has never been the case. My speeds between the Vibrant and the N2 are not much different in most places. Almost wish I still had my Vibrant so I could prove myself wrong lol.
I've tried conversing with Tmobile many times, wondering if it's because I have the old required android web, which is supposed to be unlimited, without throttling. Tmobile has claimed every time that's not the case but I don't know if I can believe it. Almost tempted to buy an old Vibrant on ebay just to test it out.

You have to be joking. Just because it's capable does not mean the congested network will give you that.

Slowed down here in NYC about a month ago. Can't wait for LTE, latest news says "early summer".
I just got this phone and noticed a slow down speed as well. If you want to call it that...
On my s3, in good 4G coverage, I was getting 12-20mbps, to where I never see over 10 now. My uploads are about the same though, in the mid 3's.
I honestly can't tell a huge difference in speed in my case. I will say, my Note trumps my s3 in every way you can imagine.... Minus speed.
Just kind of a gut check, lol!
I feel for some of you guys with those low mbps.

Ridiculously slow speed on T-mobile HSPA+

Hey guys,
I'm from the Bay Area in California. I have a supposedly unlimited 4g plan from T-mobile. I don't pay for it so I don't know the exact details but I can always connect to the signal with the H and get data.
I've noticed that over time the 4g from T-mobile has slowed down, almost to a standstill. Youtube used to stream with a little bit of lag on low quality. Now it doesn't even start, stuck on loading loop for ages. The only thing this "4g" internet is good for now is surfing the net and reading mainly text-based stuff. It's basically Edge or worse.
Another person I know has a Galaxy S3 with a 2gb 4G plan from T-mobile. His internet is also ridiculously slow. This seems to be a problem not just limited to the Galaxy Nexus but the HSPA+ from T-mobile in general. The SpeedTest.net app shows I'm getting a whopping 367kbps download and 749kbps upload, at 5:35 AM obviously not peak time.
So is this just T-mobile's issue or what? I've read the same thing about people in other cities getting 1mbps from HSPA+.
I've heard that the Nexus 4 can connect to LTE and overall have faster HSPA+ speed tests. Would buying the Nexus 4 solve the speed problem?
Yes it's T-Mobile. Can't get over 1mbps downstream in College Station, TX
Yes, I am thinking it is T-Mobile... My husband & I have the unlimited plan from T-Mobile (was 5gb, then moved to unlimited). I have a nexus4 in the Bronx/westchester, ny & ny speeds are terrible, edge speeds at best, or no service at all. Don't know what's up.

T-Mobile HSPA+ service just seems to of went downhill lately. While mines not as bad as some of yours (usually 2-3mbps download, right now at 0230 only 3-400kbps) it certainly has been slower than several months ago. I've used just under 18GB in 3 weeks though, so for the price I pay I try not to complain. Phones a G'Nex in the Kansas City MO area.
I can't help but wonder if this has something to do with T-Mobile trying to get people to upgrade to LTE capable phones.

Well I figured the network wasn't that good because it's the cheapest. Turns out some areas with good coverage I can get 5000mbps but in others it drops to around 300.
Still the question was, would upgrading to the Nexus 4 with LTE get better speeds in areas with bad HSPA+ coverage? Has anyone tried this?

You're confusing units mate, if everyone got 300-500mbps we wouldn't be having this discussion. Lol

Max data speed? Got 51Mbps tethering

Just got a blazing fast speed that makes me wonder what the max the phone is capable of.
My test was done on laptop connected to My One via Wifi tether. That was the speed from Verizon towers.

I fell like there is still some confusion. The test was performed on a laptop which was connected to the hotspot of my htc one which was on VZW network.
What is the fastest someone has seen from the towers?
Check this out. It is kind of old but I think the information is still valid.

I wish i got those speeds. I only get arround 8 mbps durring the day, and arround 28 late nights when the network is less congested. My best ever was 32.27 mbps, and that was at 3:30 in the morning.
Theoretical max speed on Verizon's 700 MHz band is 73 Mbps. The One doesn't support the new AWS band like the Galaxy S4 and G2 which can go up to 150 Mbps.
Of course, with Verizon's 4G network as crappy and overloaded as it is right now, you'd struggle to get 10.
I average about 30 in my area and I've had 56 at the highest.

I have seen high 40 to low 50 while driving through Charlotte nc when they first got lte. It's dropped drastically now. Where I live I get 8 to 15 and more than happy with that. Long as hulu and Netflix works all I need.

At my work I get 17-20 consistently. Home will bounce around between 8 and 18. Lowest I have seen without dropping to 3g was a 4 down the street, after having put a custom rom on my phone.
50ish is the most I've gotten so far.

I love that you rounded up, even though you're close to 50

mine got 15-20 PH area.

I was at 34Mbps down and 27Mbps up in NC

I was getting 25-40 easily. Then the iPhone 5 was released. Now I only get ~ 4-5.
I've definitely seen a reduction of performance over the past year in my area. I could pull 30Mb+ even in a densely populated suburb (Philly metro), but now it struggles to hit 15Mbps in the same spot. Not that I'm complaining.
Max I've ever tested was 55Mbps in a popular mountain resort town during an off-peak season. Hopefully vzw builds out more capacity (per the link above) and keeps the speeds at a satisfactory level, but I don't expect to see 50Mbps regularly.
