Is there a ROM that just works? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I used to be on Pure Nexus and obviously that hasn't been updated in a long time. I went on two different new ROM's that supposedly have no bugs and I had tons of bugs after following the instructions explicitly.
Is there a custom rom that actually is bug free the widgets work, the screen turns on without lag, and Google Assistant works???

I have tried a few roms, but personally I feel that non other rom has a better battery life and overall smoothness than the stock rom, just root it with Magisk and enjoy.

Loving Resurrection Remix with EXnoshadez Kernel and Xposed Greenify. Great battery life. I've tried Firehound, Benzo, Pixeldust, and Lineage. I'm preferring RR then Lineage as a close second.

Why do you prefer RR over Firehound?
I'm using Firehound and I find it solid and has all the extras I need. I was thinking of trying RR, but there seems to be a lot of bugs mentioned on the XDA thread.

Been using RR for a few days and doesn't have any major issues at all. Everything's been working fine.

RR has INSANE battery life, barely drains even if there are 3 audio mods installed, I would suggest using that. There is only one bug that is going to be fixed

Anything wrong with stock in particular? The monthly updates are prompt and basically effortless without needing to flash vendors or wait for the ROM developer to update. If you're not on stock (nonroot, locked BL), you run the risk of one day not being able to use apps that utilitize SafetyNet in case you use financial apps. Magisk has worked well in providing ways to circumvent it in a timely manner, but it is not guaranteed to always be able to bypass every update to SafetyNet, which the developer has mentioned.
ROMs aren't going to change the chipset magically to a newer one and increase performance substantially or add mAhs of battery to double the battery life. Android has matured since the days of using ChevyNo1 or P3Droid kernels on Sholes.

This is the conversation I am seeking. I am not going to say what ones I have used but Maps, widgets, WiFi calling, black screen when turning on. I want to avoid those situations.

I just decided to try all the publicly released ROMs. I was on Firehound before i switched to RR. I still have my TWRP backup of it. RR just hasn't given me a reason to go back.

IDK man, I see all that troubleshooting you're going through trying to get the device to run normally through the Pixel section. Is it really worth all that just to be able to change some cosmetics?
Stock will give you zero issues and save you the headache of what you're going through. Wouldn't it be nice to never have to worry about plugging into a computer to update, formatting or data, or spend so much time trying to get a device working? While at the same time, you get the updates as soon as they are available.

OK folks. I want to apologize for my flooding of the forums attempting to repair my situation last week. Yes, I have been flashing for a long time without real complications. I haven't been on my ADHD meds for a while and that did not help me with the drama last week. Unfortunately my world like most of you is in my phone, I was panicked. Sorry about that.
Needless to say I needed other eyes on what I was doing for perspective sake. I went to my PC tech, luckily had personal flashing experiences with Android, Pixel even. We worked on it for about 6 hours in total. He couldn't get RR to work.
The issue was this after following the OP instructions. Once in the system I couldn't get the WiFi to connect with the phone, not being able to download whatever the phone was looking for. Google play services kept FC'ing. Google TTS kept FC'ing as well. I don't know if there is a fix or a forthcoming fix for this abnormal issue. I deleted data from the apps that were FC'ing and other Google that might be related. PS: not a RR issue I had this same issue with Benzo)
Unfortunately, we didn't save anything from the old RR setup because I couldn't be without a phone for another day. Any constructive thoughts would be welcomed.
I shall attempt to reinstall RR at some point to see if it works, or to get data to help the devs understand what might have happened or might had happened.
I am back on stock, not loving it that is for sure.

[ROM] [AOSP] [4.2.2] Perfect Android [MANTA]

This is a ROM based off of the Android Open Source Project that I'm maintaining for myself that I'm sharing with the community.
This ROM doesn't have any special features found in most ROM's, instead I am more focused on keeping this a "STOCK" open source alternative to the shipped firmware.
If you are looking for something that is more developed I would suggest CyanogenMOD, AOKP, TeamEOS, or ParaniodAndroid, that offers more.
THIS ROM IS NOT ROOTED:
There are 3 different root apps out there in the wild and in the spirit of keeping everything as open as possible I have chosen NOT to include root, also I don't need root for anything that I do.
THIS ROM IS ODEXED:
De-odexing a rom has many pros and cons to it, one of the pros being that any modification to any apk such as theming is easier since all of the parts and info would be in one place, the apk being modified. One of the cons of de-odexing is that apks would take longer to into memory and this takes a hit on performance, not anything that is major but one example is first boot after a flash takes way longer on de-odexed roms vs odexed roms. There are apps and scripts out there to run if you need to de-odex.
If you have an error or something pops up I ask that before you post about it please make sure that you are running the ROM as provided. I cannot troubleshoot anything that is related to using other kernels, mods, or themes.
Google Apps are NOT included:

This rom is open source.

Always remember that XDA started out as a great place and will remain a great place as long as we are great to each other anything used in this ROM is available upon request and feel free to use this as a base rom for any other project.
WANT TO CUSTOMIZE THIS ROM READ THIS:
Like the ROM and want to add or remove anything or customize for yourself use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246 DSIXDA's Kitchen. Its a great kitchen for customizing prebuilt ROMs.

Lots of random reboots. The last one I flashed would reboot while in a game, then wouldn't boot back up.
So far this seems great. My only issue is Mint isn't working. At all. I go to log in and it just sits there saying "Downloading data. This can take a couple minutes." Or something along those lines. Then it just sits there. When it does do something, it says "Unable to connect. Please check network connection."
I've cleared data, uninstalled, reinstalled, everything. But still won't work. No other apps are having issues with connectivity.
Any ideas on what it could be?

Sorry, totally forgot. Haha. I got home and tried, and it worked! So, it probably was what you said. Wouldn't have been the first time...
But it's working!
I'm getting a lot of reboots now. Several a day. This last one I was saving a video from the Play Store onto my tablet for offline viewing, screen off, and that was the only thing running. Then it just restarted. It also restarted while playing a game, The Simpsons game, and also browsing the web using Chrome.
I'm running yours completely stock, with no mods or anything.
Any plans to bring in aosp browser like you did for the nexus 4? Using this on the N4 and I plan to use it here for the the N10 too.
yeah I will waiting until 4.2.2 hits aosp before I update the rom

Hi there,
This update is running great, no reboot yet (fingers crossed).
I just have 2 "complaints" : reboot options on power menu and kill all on recent menu.
Cheers
Edit: one thing to add, my calendar is acting funky. Just one color for events and the events can only be seen on a widget. I used the latest gapps from goo.

Glad that this is running good for you, now about your complaints. I am not gonna add those "features" because to me it would be like google inventing the "notification pull down" then apple adding a "notification shade" and calling it innovative, those are common in almost every rom if I am gonna make something common I'd rather keep it pure but functional and not "keep up with the Jones'".
I do provide my source, if you want to build and cherry-pick whatever feature in that you want.
Cool, I respect that. Baking my own ROM is on my bucket list but grad school is too busy

Best Mi 5s custom ROM for photos and videos

Hello !
I love taking photos and shooting videos with my phone and I always listen to music with Bluetooth headphones.
I looked for some custom ROMs in the forum but I'm a little lost about stability, what is working and what is not.
So I wanted your help guys and girls please.
I see that LineageOS 15.0 seems pretty stable but there's A LOT to read and tbh, I don't have the courage to do that haha.
If Android Pay could work too on it, that would be awesome but I don't have that much hope about that.
Thanks in advance for your answers and time,
Cordially,
bmx22c.
I'm very content with LOS 14.1 as it worked flawless since I installed it several months ago, but ViperOS also has a good track record when it comes to stabilty.
For camera it's easy, just install the last APK in the thread, where there are also suggestions about how to set it up every few posts:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi...google-camera-camera-api2-fix-t3655211/page70
60fps video recording has some issues with several people though, so if are among them, try to use the ROM camera app for video. Photo's are best in the above app.
Android pay will probably work when you install Magisk (which roots the device and makes it pass the various security checks for stuff like Netflix and online banking), which also has plugins for music quality in the "Magisk Manager" app:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Personally, I use the Dolby plugin for sound (not sure if this version is still found in Magisk Manager):

Thanks for your answer !
I will look into LOS 14.1 !
I'm mainly using the phone to shoot photos in RAW format (raw format let you save all data from the camera in case you are not familiar with photos) but I have read some threads about the Google Camera APK and it really looks cool !
For 60 FPS, it may be an issue, but I'm mainly recording in 4K30i so if 4K works, it's okay for me
Oh ! Magisk ! Never used it haha, I always used SuperSU, it may be time for me to update my knowledge, thanks !
I used to install Viper4Android but if Dolby work, that's fine, I mean, at least bluetooth needs to work haha !
Thanks again for your answer !
4k30fps works, so no problem there. You can BTW also manually install Magisk modules, so you can try out whatever soundmod you please.
/EDIT: For the camera app, look at the latest posts for the newest version!

Have you ever tested LOS 15.0 ? I mean, it is the latest version, am I right ?
I have not tested it yet because there are some serious security bugs still left, plus some random stuff popping up. I'd rather wait a bit more before I move as it is so new. Recently there has been news that LineageOS is planning to merge android 8.0 with 8.1 in the coming weeks (with not 1 phone having LOS 15 officially yet), so that might possibly introduce more bugs. Call me a chicken, but I like my phone working whenever I need it.

Oh ok thanks, I didn't knew that it was THAT early, thanks for the informations, I really appreciate it !
Tbh, I liked changing ROMs on my older phone but I didn't do that for like 2 years now and I'm pretty lost on LOS versions.
EDIT: One last question. Do you have any tips as when installing LOS 14.1 ? I'm still in MIUI 8 and I haven't changed my recovery.
My bootloader is unlocked.
I think (correct me if I'm wrong) I need to install TWRP and then wipe DATA + SYSTEM then flash ZIP (+ GAPPS later).
EDIT 2: I'm pretty scared tbf because last phone I had was a Honor 7 and it was just so painful not to brick the phone.. Installing version was painful like you needed x amout of instructions not to brick it and I just hope I won't lose any personnal data (personnal files, I know that SMS will be wiped)
EDIT 3 (yup, that many edit haha): I only see "nightly" version, is this correct, or is there any "stable" one ?
Well, as far as I read, they are more stable than I expected (as in: the bugs are relatively minor, thus it is useable if you are not easily annoyed) and the devs are making progress REALLY fast. So maybe in a months time or so it might already be worth for even the more cautious users to switch. Kinda depends on what kind of user you are. But from your text I figured you are someone who prefers stability over bleeding edge features.

Well, I'm an experienced Android user, and I had a pretty bad experience with my last phone which was a pain in the back for developers, so ROMs where not stable at all, video recording looked like sh*t, apps crashed etc. So I'm not against a bug here and there you know
Hi,
I'm just going to borrow this thread for a second, as I am looking for a similar thing. I would like to just add one more important factor for me and that is battery life. Would you say that this is also the best on Los 14.1? Are there any tweaks necessary in order to get the most out of the battery, similar to camera or sound tweaks? Is there still a battery drain associated with the fingerprint sensor?
Thank you!
For me battery life is fine as it is, but great after installing ForceDoze (Magisk module) after another user recommended it. No added trouble, so also a strong recommendation there.
To be extra certain you could flash the latest official Global MIUI first before flashing LOS as it installs the latest firmwares. It might be that you have to reinstall TWRP though.

AOSP apps

So I have been in this modding android game for quite some time since I had an LG G3 and then I moved over to the Nexus 6 for about 2 years and some of these custom roms are just awesome but one thing I cannot get rid of properly are the inbuilt AOSP apps..
on the Nexus 6 a few years back somebody made a flashable zip that got rid of all of them and the boot animation but then fixed the boot animation being deleted and unfortunately time to change technology has changed and that doesn't work on this phone obviously.
I have tried using the magisk debloater and it just a little too complicated for me because I don't like having two of the same apps one being Google the other being AOSP and any other gaps package I flash besides the razorlove gapps fail when flashing a custom ROM..
I've tried using opengapps and I thought when flashing that package the AOSP apps get replaced with the Google version of them.
Would anybody mind listing what AOSP apps I can remove completely and I apologize if it's already on the thread but I didn't really see anything or maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place but can you guys help me out? I really like the RR ROM but the AOSP apps just bothered the hell out of me. I've tried using titanium to completely remove some of them like the AOSP Keyboard but it doesn't fully remove them and I don't want to go into the files that I don't know about and screw up my phone..
So right now I'm on stock and the limitations kind of suck so if anybody could you know help me out listing a method that they use to get rid of them that actually works or listing the ones that I can remove and what program I can use to remove them I do not want to disable them I want to remove them... Or because I know how to use Linux and what not you know maybe somebody could show me how to make a flashable zip that will remove them and I will gladly share it to the community but I'm looking for anything that helps.
It would be greatly appreciated!

You do realize that AOSP is not a single project like some rom developers, right? If someone publishes an "AOSP" rom, that doesn't mean that they are following some kind of standards or rules.

Well obviously but what I'm saying is pretty much every ROM that I flash seems to have the built-in apps that are AOSP based or maybe I'm not saying it right but basically every ROM that I've tried (dirty unicorns, Resurrection Remix, carbon, dotOS, sudomod,) all have built-in AOSP Keyboard AOSP phone AOSP calendar AOSP email **** like that and that's what I want to remove

A piece of advice. Get rid of your Pixel as soon as you can. It's a bug testing platform for Google. Samsung, HTC, LG, Oneplus take buggy Google code and refine it. Google doesn't bother.
I only keep this $960 piece of **** (which is now worth less that $300) because I have no other alternative at the moment. As soon as I can dump it for a real a phone, I will.
I'm good thanks I do my research before I buy my phones and I will never buy another Samsung again and dumping my phone is not an option right now if it was I get me the Rog phone from Asus that thing is a beast

I used an S9 for a little while when I was setting it up for a friend. It's a marvelous phone. I have owned multiple HTC flagships in the past, and they were stellar. I have heard that LG and Oneplus were excellent. My last phone before Pixel XL was Note 7, which was absolutely amazing, one of a kind. This pos Pixel XL has been nothing but bug ridden nightmare. The only reason why I keep it around is because of Project FI. It's because it's cheap. Goddamn $960 nightmare on top of that.
Also, please use punctuation next time. Not using it seems like an insult, but maybe that's just me.

I believe every single new thread was me complaining about one bug or another.
The biggest one that is always on my mind though, and which is almost a deal breaker, was introduced by Google in the 7.0.2 update. And they still haven't fixed it, but all other manufacturers have - I know for a fact that this bug was fixed in Oreo by Samsung and Oneplus.
It's where you wear a smartwatch which can make and receive phone calls, such as my beautiful Huawei Watch with a gorgeous custom band, and then you get inside your car with a bluetooth hands-free car kit, or just a bluetooth headset, which then improperly connects to the phone as "Connected (no phone)." So you cannot use it. If you don't wear a watch, then everything works fine with a kit or bt headset. This is the reason why I don't wear my beautiful watch anymore. Google needs to fire their bluetooth stack programmer.

My bad. I use speech to text a lot and I don't like using punctuation when speaking. It causes some bad habits.
Update though, upon doing further research making a flashable zip is complicated but I should have it all figured out by the end of the week and I'm not really having any bugs with the AOSP apps I just don't like looking in my app drawer and seeing there's duplicates and I really don't want to manually hide all of them each time I flash a ROM or something and do a backup.
On a side note I just found a Chrome extension that allows speech to text and is very good with no ads. If you're like me and you use your voice more than you use your keyboard, look up voice in voice typing under Chrome extensions pretty damn simple.

A friend of mine made a script specifically for what you are trying to do, granted, it's for a different device and older version of Android. Some small modification should be all it needs to suit your purpose, if nothing else, it may contain some useful information.
The thread is located here (Keep in mind, he's from Brazil, so his English is a little rough =)

You are completely fine. I'm shocked how nice people are on here LOL usually people are just mean and think they have the right answer and I have to accept it no matter what and I just don't like people who are so full of themselves so thank you.
I've been trying to research this but I was supposed to have surgery today and I was getting ready for that and unfortunately it was cancelled without my knowledge so that was pretty stressful and now I have to start the whole process over again because the doctors I was going to go to no longer accept my insurance and nobody told me so I'm still going to work on this it's just going to be a little bit of a process.

As a side note, I am now in the same boat as you. I have a Oneplus 6 now, silk white, which is gorgeous. But it has double apps like yours - 2 calendars, 2 calculators, 2 message apps, 2 clock apps etc. I don't even really know which ones are Google and which ones are Oneplus - I think the round icons are Google, but rectangular icons are Oneplus. Plus I don't know which apps are better. I think that I will use some of them for a while and disable the least appealing ones.
There are only a handful, and maybe that's what you can do? Just disable? If you cannot disable from the main Android interface, you can do it from adb. There are commands that can disable and enable app packages from adb.
Hey guys I'm sorry it's been awhile since I've kept up with you guys. So a little side note
I have started this project it is my very first project on my GitHub.
But my problem is I have no idea how to even start this I mean I tried using the flashable zip creator and it pulled the system apps but I'm at a loss here any help would be greatly appreciated..

Custom ROMs or Stock?

Hi, I didn't know if this should be in Questions or Discussions, so apologies ahead of time.
I just got a Pixel 2 XL and recently unlocked the bootloader. I'm thinking about experimenting with some custom ROMs and tweaking some things, however I'm really digging the stock Pie experience. Is there really any super good reasons for installing any of the misc. ROMs out there? Or should I just stick to stock? Just looking for some opinions. Thanks!

Personally speaking, I've tried most of the custom roms, and they're all great in their own way, with fantastic Dev & community support in all of them. Having said that, I like the simplicity, and ease of updating every month with the factory images when they come out. Just a few clicks here and there, and I'm running the latest software and security updates, with my magisk modules, root apps, and themes up and running in about 30 minutes. But again, that's just me

Hmm, thanks for the thought. I've been digging how fast the stock ROM is. As long as it's easy to go back to stock I might give it a go, I just don't wanna risk the out of the box experience lol

No worries. With a little reading and some patience, you can usually always get back to stock. Course, ya never know when the gremlins will strike!
I've been on a major crack-flashing kick. I love the freedom. I've become very fond of a couple features some of the ROMS offer that are baked in. Stock is great, no doubt. Yet, the ROMS provided here are fantastic. Def worth a spin!

Currently I'm running the 12/5 build of Liquid and I really dig it. The version that is newer seems to have some complaints. When the next monthly update comes along I'll prolly try to dirty flash but will be prepared to go back to stock on the January update. Lol I know how to deal with burps on stock most of the times...
Custom roms all the way lol but i wouldn't even mind a custom stock rom with a few minor tweaks and mods like the old Google devices had

Haha yup I sure do.. the good ol days
Personally, I went on a week kick of using custom ROMs. I love them. They generally perform great and have some useful features, for me, such as:
One-handed mode
Swipe left on nav bar to go back
Status bar customization
Quick and easy themes for dark mode
etc
However, there are just a few trade-offs, which could make it or break it for you.
No squeeze for Assistant. I use this not for assistant but with the Edge Sense Magisk module that lets you customize your squeezes to do literally anything lol.
LED Notification (I have not been able to get this working on any ROM but someone correct me if its just a "me issue".
No ambient display "Now Playing" text. Keep in mind it'll still pop up as a notification and there was one ROM I tried (Nitrogen possibly?) that allowed me to control music on Spotify via the ambient display and i LOVED that!
Those 3 reasons keep me on stock for now. I may switch back into the ROM scene if I could at least get the LED notification working lol. The active edge functionality is also something I use constantly but it's not the end of the world if it's gone.
Anyway, this is what Ive noticed! Hope others can chime in!
Edit: I use light manager on stock. I'm unsure if it works on custom ROMs. I should try it!

Have you tried using Light Manger for your led notifications? Used to work great on 8.1 with custom roms. Although 9.0 may be different.

I use Light Manager on stock! I love it. You @localceleb use it on custom ROMs and it works? I'll admit that I have not tried it on custom ROMs but on stock it works swimmingly well! Haha
The beauty of these phones is you can always go to back to stock by just flashing the ota file in twrp.
So far my favourites are DU13 and Pixel dust.
I enjoyed Havoc AOSP. For now for me nothing beats stock with edge control. I use long squeeze for flashlight which is awesome for overnight piss breaks.
I never use squeeze nor care for the "Now Playing" on the lock screen (actually disabled both on stock).
I have been running stock for about a year with custom kernel, then found Havoc-OS and flashed that about 2 weeks ago. Don't have any complaints and absolutely love the customisation. Probably won't be going back to stock for awhile.
I prefer custom ROMs for minor tweaks such as status bar icon settings, lockscreen stuff and Substratum!
I've bought many themes so I'd rather have a device that has commits to make it work to its max potential (i.e. not having to reboot to enable overlays).
Updating process isn't difficult for custom ROMs either. Developers are usually pretty quick with updates once the Google images release every month. Just need to flash the new ROM zip, TWRP, kernel and root and you're golden!

Question Advice - best build or ROM I should be running now!

Hi all!
I have not been on here for several months but am starting to look at what's out there as of now. I am still on 12 and the June build with Kirisakura kernel. I would like to know what others are running so I can consider what to do next as it's time to start tinkering. Go to 13? Custom AOSP? What are most running now? And yes, I know the experience is unique to our devices so no need to point that out.
Thanks!
i use ricedroid v8 with kirisakura and it works perfectly

I second this.
Rice is one of the best custom roms here with loads of customisations and compatible with Kiri kernel.
I'm on stock for now but waiting for Rice 9

I'm running paranoid android topaz. I like the fact the rom has an ota function. I think I gotta go thru the hassle of fastboot flashing root every update though

Yes it's pretty stable. Some system apps show the 'app not responding' popup.
I experienced very severe slowdown and lag on stock. I think it had to do with cloud syncing. Although, on PA I don't experience any slowdown. Stable enough for daily use imo. Use the latest version

Depends on your objectives. If you have any interest in actual security, you should look at GrapheneOS. Pretty much everything else is made by kids who have no idea what they're doing, so don't trust it too far.

Sandboxed gapps isn't flzwless. You can't sync contacts through google. If you consider graphene please research and don't just dive in like i did stupidly one day. It isn't customization focused so if you want to tweak stuff look into ricedroid or even crdroid. But if you want a secure os and don't use too much google graphene is the gold standard. Calling everything else garbage is a very terrible mindset. I try to encourage developers, not insult them like a certain someone in this thread

I am using GrapheneOS (my own Magisk Patched build) and you are able to sync google contacts with the included contacts app, it took a minute for them to appear after installing the play services and stuff then logging in, as well as granting the appropriate permissions, google play services needs the contacts permission, it's very secure by default and because of this you will need to grant google some permissions for everything to work as it does on google stock, like the notifications permission

Graphenes extra features are more security features, it does have far less customizability than some other roms but is still a great rom for every day use, I don't believe you need to be paranoid to want the security it offers
one of the main things for me is being able to lock the bootloader and have full AVB2 protections
this makes my data much more secure if the phone were to fall into the hands of someone else
You are also still able to root the phone with magisk and have a locked boot loader with Graphene if you build the rom yourself or use the builds I provide, this allows you to use Magisk and LSPosed to make further modifications as necessary
