Any chance Verizon mobile hotstpot won't work on unlocked S9? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I've never had an unlocked phone. My S6 is Verizon and they blocked Pdanet/foxfi. So, I thought I wanted to go unlocked, especially if there is less carrier bloat. But now I'm hearing that wifi calling won't work (I can live without that), and some people think mobile hotspot might not work. Is that possible?

It should work fine! I had the Note 8 (unlocked), S8+ (unlocked), and the S8 (unlocked). Hotspot worked great on all three!

What about Verizon Visual Voicemail? Will that work, and can you download it to the phone, or does it do it automatically?

I could never get visual voicemail to work on my unlocked S7.

UDP VZW Wifi Hotspot

What is everyone's thoughts on whether there will be a way to turn on the wifi hotspot on phones that are on a grandfathered VZW Unlimited Data Plan? I think I remember hearing that one of the Nexus phones the hotspot worked out of the box without any special app's (Foxfi) or root. Thoughts?
6p works unlocked, running stock.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
I can confirm that the Nexus 6p, out of the box, will run the wifi hotspot on VZW UDP, on both 6.1 and 7.0.
I can also confirm that the Nexus 5x, out of the box will NOT run wifi hotspot on VZW UPD, without rooting and modifying build.prop (easy to do if you are bootloader unlocked).
Reports are that bootloader will be locked on Pixel for phones sold by VZW. I'm not very optimistic that wifi tether will work
I have an upgrade on VZW - which I wanted to use for Pixel, but might have to buy Pixel (or iPhone?) and trade/sell to get an unlocked Pixel, which should be bootloader unlocked, but probably won't have VZW wifi calling available.
I have one on order from Verizon and that's the first thing I'm going to try. If not I'm returning it. The Verizon Bloatware is removable so I hope it's not baked in.

The wifi calling and verizon features should work on the unlocked pixel, just as the features worked on the unlocked Motorola Nexus 6 because verizon sold their version of the Nexus 6 so it should be safe to say the unlocked pixel will work 100% as designed to and on verizon also. Google lists the Unlocked pixel works on all 4 major carriers they never listed that for the Nexus 6p I believe, so them listing it will work on all four carriers should tell you otherwise they would have to list that there may be features that will not work on some of those four major carriers. I would have to say 100% by that that everything all verizon features should work on the unlocked pixel being used on the verizon service, just as they do on the verizon version of the pixel and pixel xl.
Thanks for the replies... My wife and I fell into the Note 7 debacle so we are trying to decide if we are going to tempt fate with the "safe" Note 7's or switch to a different phone and the Pixel caught my eye and something that might be worth having. So, aside from how the reviews end up, I have to have the wifi hotspot since our phones are our only access to the internet in the area we live.
Thanks again!
i have ULD with Verizon as well. i preordered today, when the phone arrives i will definitely post my results as well!

Got the phone yesterday, I confirm that wifi hotspot does NOT work out of the box. I preordered the phone with VZW and have grandfathered ULDP with no hotspot subscription. It says please subscribe for this feature or something.?*
On another note I have read that PDANet wired USB tethering works, I have not tried this yet. Will try this weekend when I have time.

Hotspot works, I am using it now. You have to install Network Signal refresher lite, activate it then right away switch the toggle for the system hotspot. This works on Verizon and Google purchased Pixels.

Doesn't work with the lite version. I hit refresh and immediately goto hotspot, it says there is no connection. I wait until I get LTE back and get this screen

Confirmed Network Signal Refresh Lite works to get native hotspot working on VZW ULDP
I tried a few more times after it failed and got it to work just like the other poster said.
Press Refresh on Network Signal Refresh and hit you all apps button and switch to your hotspot setting.
Click it and it comes up .
Slow as hell tho, but still works. Useful in a pinch!!!
Check screenshots for proof!!!
Once you get used to it, it takes just as long as FoxFI did on the Note 7 so I'm happy.
I can also confirm. Refresh, turn on hotspot from pull down menu. You'll need to edit your menu and add hotspot for easier access. My speeds appear to be normal via computer via speedofme. Peaking at 20Mbs
Has anyone had issues with hotspot turning off after 15 to 20min . Ive read in another post this is happening to alot of people
Does anyone worry this could be patched by Verizon? I'm waiting for a Google pixel because I can't afford Verizon to block my wifi tether with udp. If I knew that this would work indefinitely I would just get my phone from Verizon

WiFi Calling and VoLTE and AT&T

It's my understanding that these features (advanced calling, like WiFi calling and VoLTE) Doo not work on unbranded devices like Pixel and others. This was the case with my unbranded SM935F or Galaxy S7 Edge until we got some files, an appropriate CSC, and also had AT&T switch our account to an IMEI of an AT&T branded device that had working WiFi Calling (others have apparently just called AT&T and had them provision WiFi Calling)
Note: for me, I have a business account so I could just go into my business portal and put in an IMEI that I got from an S7 Edge model in an AT&T store
I am attaching the files that we needed to add to our system to get WiFi calling to work on AT&T. I think I remember all I had to do was to add them and make sure permissions were correct
Here is an IMEI that I saw on another post that may work ..... But I do know that the AT&T system needs to recognize your phone IMEI as an att branded device that has working WiFi calling. So if you aren't business customers it will require a call to customer support.
Possible working IMEI:
Mod edit: Removed
Any Pixel AT&T users that could try this and report back would be greatly appreciated!
Btw, I'm not completely sure which files are needed in the Pixel as compared to the S7 Edge .... I would have a backup available

I obviously could be wrong ...... But I'm 99% sure that what you are saying is not true for AT&T and maybe even other USA carriers!
I KNOW that I'm right for S7 phones and ROMs .... And the problem is so pervasive that they have even been able to get unbranded S8's to obtain WiFi Calling on AT&T or other USA carriers (even though WiFi calling works great on branded S8 phones)
AT&T users a different mechanism to provision WiFi calling than other carriers

You are correct that AT&T does not allow unbranded phones to use those features. It's all BS too. I have great LTE coverage but many times I will go to make a call and have crap service because they have canabalized a lot of the hsdpa towers for LTE. Then the switch back to LTE can take forever. And I don't care what they or anyone says AT&T's hspa+ is no where near as fast
None of this works, as AT&T blocks access to VoLTE on Pixel phones. Denies me the use of Numbersync for my tablet and android wear 2.0 watches. AT&T service techs keep promising to fix it and try to force it to work, but still blocked. It is simply a situation for Google to get the Pixel certified for the AT&T network, which is problematic, as AT&T uses a non-standard protocol for HD Voice that is unique to their network. So, as best I can tell, AT&T has to release the source code, for a price, I presume, to Google to add to the phones and then pay for the certification process with the FCC. Seems a stand-off as long as Google has an "exclusive" arrangement with Verizon. So for me, I'm pissed not to have numbersync for my devices, but unwilling to give up all the advantages of the Pixel phone.
That's why I switched to T-Mobile.
So there is no way to get VoLTE on the Pixel XL with AT&T then?

I doubt it. They only support advanced features on devices sold by them so it's not as if older Pixels will suddenly be grandfathered in just because they start carrying newer ones.
This annoys me to no end... If I buy a phone from att, do they have to give me an unlock code when the phone is paid off? I really need WiFi calling for a trip I make multiple times a year

Yeah according to a rep I spoke with, the pixel 2 will support Numbersync even though att isn't selling them. There are, however, no plans to change the restriction on the original pixels.
I'm in the same boat but I'm genuinely curious - if I don't need wifi calling - is it really a big deal not having VoLTE? I'm taking in terms of better signal or faster LTE internet speed. Or does VoLTE is just having clearer phone calls? I guess what I'm asking is what other benefits are we losing (on a technical standpoint)

Late response but as far as AT&T goes besides VoLTE what I experienced on my Pixel XL was random issues with group text (MMS) reception from certain individuals from other carriers.
In particular it seemed as though if senders of MMS texts to a group chat that I was participating in sent a text from a carrier like T-Mobile and they were using Samsung devices with VoLTE and enhanced LTE stuff enabled on their end I'd not receive the text. I would instead receive texts from others in the conversation. I could freely text any of the same individuals in a separate standard SMS conversation just fine, and they could send me an MMS text like a photo, but as soon as we were in group MMS I'd lose the ability to receive their texts and no amount of APN changes or combinations of texting apps would fix it.
I can't tell you how many times over the course of the first 5 months of owning my Pixel XL with an AT&T SIM in it I missed out on half the conversation in group MMS. Doing nothing to my phone other than porting number to T-Mobile and putting in my new T-Mobile SIM all of my group MMS issues went away (replaced with ****ty signal LOL but that's a different story). I'm now on Verizon with my XL and am a happy camper, albeit poorer having wasted money jumping around.

HD Calling and Advanced LTE on AT&T

I noticed that when I make a call, the phone drops from LTE to HSPA or whatever their 3G band is called. I have an LTE SIM in there that had HD calling working on my Essential, Pixel2 XL, iPhone 8+, OP3, etc...
I was getting HD calling on all of those devices, and I did call AT&T support and had them add my IMEI to the line, so it should be working. Is there something that I have to do to enable it on the phone?
My concern is that if I am tethering while on a conf call, I won't get LTE and that's a problem.
Thoughts?
U had it on ur op3, I thought att did not allow volte on non att phones, I was never able to get it on my op3
I thought that I did, and I did on my Essential. Damn it, this sucks... Might have to go back to the Essential. Not having voice and data at the same time in 2018 blows... I am within the return window, although because of the credit card breach, the card they would need to refund to, has been canceled... What a cluster...
Yeah, ran through all sorts of hoops with several customer service reps. They say that VoLTE is enabled and provisioned properly to this SIM and IMEI, but I can't get it to work and it doesn't even show up as an option to enable it in any of the phone's menus... So either AT&T won't allow this BYOD device to have simlutanous voice and data on LTE, or maybe something in the beta isn't giving me the option.
Is anyone running the stock non beta OOS and getting VoLTE to work on AT&T?
I also gave them an IMEI from one of my other phones, an AT&T branded Note 5 that I own, and told them to put that one in and see if it worked, because that would tell me whether it is the phone itself not able to do it, or a provisioning thing on AT&T's end... That didn't work either...
I then went back to my Essential and had them enter that IMEI and it didn't work either...
I guess if I want wifi calling and voice and data at the same time, I have to pay a ton of money for an AT&T phone... Kinda bummed...
I talked to their support and put the SIM back in my Essential, and it fired right up and has VoLTE and doesn't drop to H+ when I make a call. Same SIM, I didn't even call to give them the IMEI. So something isn't supported on the OP5T.
Which sucks, because between the two phones, I really prefer the 5T. Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be... That's the downside of buying unlocked phones, you may miss out on some of the key features that you want on the carrier side...
Which ROM are you on?
Did you turn on VoLTE in settings if you are in stock OOS? If not you can try a custom ROM like Liquid Remix that have VoLTE working
Stock rom. If I have to install a custom rom to get the phone to work, not worth it. I will just return it and get my money back
AT&T only enables VoLTE and LTE+ on provisioned devices and supported, usually BYOD especially for a non-listed device does NOT apply. I was on AT&T when I got my 5T, tried my sim from iPhone 6S and a brand new sim I got at the store that I was assured would have VoLTE capability, but nothing. Not even wifi calling would work on my 5T. No options in Settings either to toggle it. They want you to buy the device from them is why they do this on unlocked phones.
I switched to T-Mobile and I had VoLTE, LTE+, and VoWiFi all on first boot with T-Mobile sim, with all of them listed in Settings on the same device with same software version as I was when on AT&T's network.
It's simply just a case of AT&T not supporting the device. Typically only carrier-sold phones for AT&T will have those capabilities, if you look it up you'll see many people say the same. Personally I'm glad I switched to T-Mobile because they don't lock down all of those features to try to get me to buy a phone from the carrier like AT&T did/does. I'd never go back to them at this point. Sorry but if staying on AT&T is the only option for you I'd look into how you could go about returning the phone to OnePlus and getting something AT&T-approved.

I have an ATT sim from my company originally meant for an iPhone. VoLTE did not work on a google pixel cause the plan was not compatible. And since it is not my plan I can't make changes. I ordered the Oneplus to see if I could get it to work. And on a Stock ROM it will not work without Root and the Magisk Module to enable VoLTE. It will work on Custom ROMS such as Omni and Phoenix, both of with work for me with no issues.
In the end I returned the OP5T for a refund, and am back to using my Essential. While that is a non-AT&T phone that I bought right from Essential, it does support VoLTE out of the box, no issues. I don't get Wifi Calling, but I get HD Calling, works with my tethering plan, etc... Not sure why the Essential works but the OP5T doesn't, and it sucks because I liked the OP5T more... but it is what it is...

It works on ATT, but the issue is that it doesn't do HD Calling, Wifi Calling, etc...
Make a phone call and while you are on the phone, you lose LTE and it drops to HSPA(3G)...
It's not a phone limitation, it's that AT&T won't allow it to have those features on their network. That is the ONLY reason I sent the phone back. Hopefully they address it with the OP6 and get in "approved" for AT&T and I can sell my iPhone 8+ and come back to Android...

Sorry, but this will never happen in the foreseeable future.
AT&T purposely does this to all BYOD, so the OP6 is not going to change anything. They only offer these options for phones you purchase directly through them online or in an AT&T store.

How did you get it working? I didn't want to root it and install a custom ROM, which I believe was the only way to get it working.
I tried using an IMEI from one of my other phones that I know worked, etc... Nothing worked.
You guys know that even if you show the switches and turn them on, that the LTE data doesn't work right? It's just showing the options and you can turn them on. I even have my OP5t added to my account as an ATT LG G6 and it doesn't work. Unless there is some agreement, like with the Essential Phone or Google's only official phone, you're out of luck.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at. I talked to ATT several times, tried different IMEI's and nothing worked. Regardless of what the options in the menu claim, it doesn't work. If you are just using your phone it will say LTE. But when you make a call, as soon as it connects, it switches to 3G or HSPA+... It won't do phone calls and LTE data at the same time.
If it did, I would have kept the phone. But that's a pretty big feature to have to live without for me. That and HD calling, Wifi Calling, etc...
I wish that OnePlus would do whatever they need to do to get the phone "certified" for ATT, but I don't see that happening...

Yea, it's a pretty crappy situation. I came from a Moto x Pure to the OP5 and then to the OP5t and it was a big disappointment when I was stuck without LTE on calls. I had the Moto x on Verizon though. I really don't get why they restrict BYOD phones at all considering that if people use MORE data, they are likely to bump up their plans to the next tier. I kinda don't get the rationale. Anyway, it is what it is. I love my OP5t and hope to keep this phone for a while, unlike many past phones. But I live in a city, so rarely have issues here.

Everything works great, including call forwarding codes etc. This phone is basically a turd on Verizon, no wifi calling, and no texting. My plan is to give the AT&T pay as you go plan a 2 month trial, I will forward my VZW phone to it, and put it through the paces, if all works out, I will get rid of VZW and move to At&t.
I found out, while you can enable Wifi calling on AT&T, it does not actually work when there is no network. OnePlus support says that plan on fixing it on a future update. It does however work on Google Fi.

Verizon data doesn't work, but voice and text works. Speak to OP cs, suggest contact Verizon. I am actually xfinity user, xfinity lease Verizon network, my 7t shows "Verizon".
It's working for me, Verizon gUDP
/system/product/etc/apns-conf.xml go to that find your carrier and enter that apn if rooted. theres other ways too but that's best
