Included headphone adapter doesn't work? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

My first attempt at using the included headphone adapter doesn't work and I get the error Analogue audio accessory detected: the attached device is not compatible with this phone".
I am using just normal 3.5mm Sony headphones. Do I need to buy a separate DAC? Initial research suggests I shouldn't have to.
I have ensured "disable audio rerouting..." is not enabled in developer options and I have also tried plugging in the adapter, rebooting and then plugging in the headphones. Even tried blowing the USB port, but that didn't help either.
Many thanks in advance

I was getting that message with a off brand set of audio adapters I bought off of Amazon. I bought the phone second hand off of someone and they didn't include the Google adapter, I bought one off of the Google site and no problems at all. That's weird I'd get a hold of Google about it for sure

Hmm strange indeed. I did this the other way round from you and expecting an audio adapter/DAC today from amazon. If this didn't work, I'll indeed get in touch with Google

Just to update on this: Google have dispatched a replacement so I'll be curious to know if that one works. In the meantime, the following amazon purchased arrived and I can now listen to music via my headphones, works a treat!

Ahh how annoying for you! It's really weird how Googles own adapter is having such issues like this. Dam shame that the DAC isn't built in to the device (instead of having to use an adapter with the DAC inside) - if I'm right in what I'm saying here

Update: received 2 free replacement original Google adapters and they both work fine. Definitely worth chasing with them if you're facing issues!

Check on pixel 2 community seems like this is a software issue, I got the same problem occasionally and I plug the adaptor to laptop all working fine.

Weird though isn't it. If with the same software only 1 official Google adapter works and another doesn't.

3 pixel 2 XLs and none of them play music through the USB-C to headphone adapter

EDIT: After 2 days of plugging, plugging back in, updating, trying different pixel 2's, trying different headphones and adapters nothing worked. Tonight I try it again with the same old headphones that didnt work before and as if by magic they started working. Then everything else worked. Google said that it needed to download the USB C audio app internally. I guess it did it in the background finally.
I have access to 3 pixel 2s through my company and a ton of different headphones. None of them will do anything when you plug in headphones using the USB C adapter. I was on tech support chat with google for an hour until they gave up and said to factory reset. They said there is supposed to be a popup when you plug in headphones that cofigures the usb dongle but I get nothing that pops up. Its not a bad dongle because I have 3 fresh and new ones that I have tried with different phones. Anyone else experience this? Anyone have any ideas?

I just plugged mine in for the first time. Nothing popped up, and it works just fine. Super cheap pair of headphones (came free with something) and all is working fine. Not sure what should pop up, but am happy I can just plug it in and it works. I like that I don't have to toggle something.

Just finish setting up mine....
I have no problem.
no problems here with Apple EarPods.
Very weird, my headphones at work played the first time I plugged them in. I have heard of a few problems though, one guy it didn't work the first time, he unplugged then plugged back in and his headphones worked. I hope Google fixes this ASAP. Like bluetooth issues we should not have problems like this with flagship phones.
Miraculous. It works now. After 2 days of plugging, plugging back in, updating, trying different pixel 2's, trying different headphones and adapters nothing worked. No problem for me but I did notice that it takes longer than expected for audio to switch from the phone speakers to the headphones. After that it works fine. Sound is good too.
Funny thing about these phones is,my of Pixel XL used basic windows drivers to connect to my PC.
Well really any PC instant connect didn't need drivers.
These phones need ADB updates and Google USB drivers installed.
Windows 10 usually takes care of this
But this headphone issues is phone related. Seems the OS maybe missing a few things it had to call home for.

3.5mm headphone jack issues

Hello I have a US TA-1045 version of the Nokia 6.1 that I am returning for a replacement. The reason is that my sound will cut out every single time I am using headphones through the 3.5mm plug. The only thing I can do to remedy the problem is removing the headphones and plugging them back in and resuming playback.
Has anybody had this problem? I am really hoping my replacement does not have this same issue.
I have this same issue with my Nokia 6.1 . Let me know how it goes.
Seems the plug is fussy
Two questions:
1. Have you tried a different pair of headphones?
2. Do you have a case on the phone?
If you are using inexpensive headphones the impedance could be less than expected and might cause a problem.
Some cases may not let the headphone plug seat completely in the jack.
This happens to me with the headphones that came with the phone, my other earbuds, and another aux cable.
Haven't had issues with these in other devices

I havnt used other headphones yet. But I dont have 'any' issues when I use the same headphones on several other devices. I do use a case but its small and I dont think it impedes with plug. I can try with the case off but Im sure it wont help. The way the sound goes out is not like it goes in and out. It just cuts out completely and the music keeps playing. Not through the headphones or the speaker, just nothing.
Anyways my replacement does the exact same thing. Im looking at hopefully getting a different phone.

It's Android not the phone from my experience, get a USB C adapter. Alternatively try turning off automatic USB audio routing in developer settings. (Didn't work for me on Oreo but apparently it used to work great in Nougat)This will probably be a slow bug fix as the 3.5 mm jack is dying out. I borrowed someone's pixel 2 xl adapter and it worked great so I ordered one along those lines in standards with reviews backing it up on Amazon.

It happens with Play Music too but admittedly much less frequently. I literally wear my ear buds all day listening to music maybe I should try Pandora or something. Have you switched to any music apps that seem to work better? Which one or ones if so? My adapter won't be here till tomorrow but I'll give a full report if you would like me to.

I used Pandora (paid version) regularly with my Nokia 6.1 (TA-1068), Oreo 8.1.
I have never had a problem using headphones. YMMV.
Does anyone have a link to the spotify / google play issue?
This issue is super annoying - especially because I usually do a lot of dirty work with my phone in my pocket and when the audio cuts out, my hands are too dirty to touch the phone

Link to what? Who knows if Nokia is even aware of the issue. It also happens with other music players unfortunately. I did see some mention of the problem on Nokia 6.1 official forums, but no mention of solutions. Still waiting to hear if a usb C adapter fixes the problem. But I doubt it as this seems to be a software issue.

Someone in this thread mentioned earlier that this issue is related to Spotify and not necessarily the Nokia 6.1 . I could have misinterpreted
Wasn't sure if spotify had acknowledged this bug on their support area or not

Sorry for not getting back to you. I only had it for a day and lost it but I do not recommend the adapter. It would randomly have loud static that I did not have with the pixel 2 xl adapter I borrowed. However I have been using the jack and it seems to cut out less frequently now. I am probably going to just use Bluetooth from now on.

Ok thank you!
Ok I think I accidentally fixed the issue. It's caused by the setting option that allows you to raise your phone to your face and the screen comes on allowing you to see notifications. It's called "Lift to check your phone" option in settings. Turn this feature off. Haven't had the issue since.

Pie and USB Audio

It's likely a setting that I just can't find, but is anyone successfully using the usb-c audio adapter for headphones with Pie? This wasn't an issue in the DP versions, but when I plug in the adapter, it defaults to "charging the connected device via USB" and doesn't allow me to change it.
I'd really hate for my brand new pair of Audio-Technica headphones to be rendered useless...
Is it the Google provided adapter? I read somewhere that third-party accessories were not compatible...

No worries. It's good to know that third-party adapters are not supported, though.
Update: Interesting thing to note is that it works fine with Flash Kernel v3.0, but not stock kernel.
@nathanchance just mentioning you here to keep you apprised (as if you don't get enough mentions...)
I just tried it and mine doesn't work either with the Google provided adapter.
Update: It does work with my headphones.

FWIW, completely stock, using the adapter from the box with Audio Technica ATH-M50x works as expected.
For whatever reason however my Sol Republic wired cans no longer work with the adapter (they did previously on the DP's)

I think my kids have that model, I will try to find them and see if they work.
EDIT: found them, they work fine as well.
I stopped using the stock adapter as it is super lose in the port. I opted to purchase Razer's adapter as it's of a higher quality. I used it this morning while cooking breakfast and it worked great.
It may have just been a goof, but I was grabbing logs and happened to see a message that said my device was not capable of usb audio. Stock Pie rooted image from yesterday.
The audio adapter is not working on my Pixel 2 XL after the official Android P OTA update.

Type c to 3.5mm jack.

All of us know that Type c to 3.5mm jack converter is not included in the box and i want to know that from where i'll buy it on oneplus.in it is out of stock & on Amazon some cheap companies selling it at high price. other than this the best substitutes out in the market.
[Update]
Purchased original one from Aliexpress arround INR250 and oneplus.in showing INR420
Buy it from any local shop. It will be much cheaper.
Take your earphones and test them on the spot (with mic/calling).

This bugged out even me. From what I've found out this adaptor has been out of stock for a very long time from the official oneplus store (There have been several complaints about it as this is something that is prone to breaking and getting lost).
In order to get them offline I tried getting in touch with the oneplus experience store. I tried calling them multiple times they but they never picked up. So then I went to the store personally only to find it was out of stock, and would take at least 2 weeks for them to get it back in stock(If that happens).
Then I tried my luck with multiple local stores but none of them had it.
Now, getting to the important part. I've been researching about it for a while now and might've finally found an adaptor which would most likely perform on par when compared to the stock oneplus adaptor and is of good quality. It's the Mi adaptor.
For Indian costumers: We can use Sharesave App to get the adaptor.

This Sharesave App seems to have delay in shipping and has bad reviews in play store. any other good brand to go with? in Amazon or flipkart.
I got a local one from local vendor from here for just 90rs is like a dollar and its working exactly same as the original one. Just dont go for apple and google ones rest anything you can buy.

I have the Mi adaptor and can confirm that it works perfectly with Oneplus 7 and the sound quality via earphones is as good as my OP6 with 3.5mm jack. I got the adaptor from Xiaomi Store for only 10RMB (around 100 INR) while visiting China 2 months back.
Ordered from eBay some cheap cables. As soon as I get them, I will let you know. They are advertised to work with OnePlus 6T, 7, 7 Pro. I can't see a reason why it won't work since OnePlus 7 has an analog connection, DAC is inside, unlike other phones that has digital one. It's like before, when the phone had a jack 3.5mm, only now the connector is different.
I got this from Amazon :
https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07T3V8LTM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2zknDb9N1375W
However, others are not able to hear me talk while using the headset's mic.
It's way too low they say.
I use Sennheiser cx275 s. I've been using it fine since 3 years. I tried the adaptor with another headset. Same observation.
Is anyone else facing any issue when using the headset mic connected to adaptors?
I bought a local adaptor but i was barely able to hear anything the other person was speaking and it was the same on the other end too.
Official Oneplus 3.5mm to USB was available in stock yesterday and day before but now i see its out of stock. I did order one yesterday and should receive it tomorrow.
I saw it in stock about a week ago. And it was in stock till yesterday, I guess. I have my 6T's adapter which works just fine on the 7. But ordered another one, just in case.

Bro.. i m new to this forum kinda things hence if any issues found please ignore & sorry for late replyin
What kinda earphone you are looking for .... if in-ear earphones is your priority then purchase a connector of oneplus only as the sound quality delivered is very good and also it is very good in quality and usage.
If in-ear earphone is not your concern then buy LETV earphones with usb type C ( which is white in colour ) which is very good in quality far more better than oneplus bullets and it has Led light in its earphone which is an added advantage ( it looks very Unique ).
Hope i solved your query ..
Cheers:good:
I ordered a Type C to 3.5mm Jack Adapter today from Oneplus.in,
So anyone in India can check out oneplus.in as it might be still available on oneplus.in

Any Amazon adapter to recommend? Something that can allow to listen to music AND charge the phone at the same time?

I got this from Amazon :

However, others are not able to hear me talk while using the headset's mic.
It's way too low they say.
I use Sennheiser cx275 s. I've been using it fine since 3 years. I tried the adaptor with another headset. Same observation.
Is anyone else facing any issue when using the headset mic connected to adaptors?

Yes. Same issue.
Tried different adapters, different headsets.
Tried the DAC adapter too.
One common issue across all adapters is that the opposite person gets to listen to me in very low volume.
This is a big big problem. Still trying to find a solution.

Type c dongle and headphone cable not working

Not sure if I'm missing something. But I've been trying to get my shure se535s working with my note 10+
I first bought a type c to 3.5mm dongle which didnt work. So I then purchased a rather pricey type c to mmcx cable to replace the entire cable for my monitors. But that doesnt work either. Device just plays audio out of the speakers.
The provided headphones work just fine (be it they are runnish).
Anyone got any ideas?? I wasnt bothered about the headphone jack removal at first as I had 2 options but neither of these seem to work
I plugged in the headphones that came with the phone and the connection was horrible. I literally had to hold them in because if the phone moved it would disconnect and then my phone call would come out of the speaker not the headphones. I just think the typs C connection sucks.
I have the Shure BT cable and I use BT most of the time. I purchased it off of Amazon. Works great. I also suggest getting Comply replacement foam tips.

You have to get a certain kind. Some brands of adapters don't have a built in DAC. Go get a Samsung branded one from Best buy and see if it works. That's what I had to do.
Isn't there a DAC inside the phone?

Apparently not. I asked the same question on reddit and people said the same thing. Samsung didnt put an in built dac to convert the signals over. So cheap dongles dont work. And nor does my over prices $90 shure cable... but a few people recommended the google branded one used for the pixel. And amazon reviewers confirmed it worked with the note 10+

I can't comment on that one, but since I've dealt with this issue from my Pixel 2XL, there are adapters with both the DAC and a power in, but with both ports on the end of the box. That side mounted power input looks awkward to use.
I bought this one, but I'm trying to find it to test with the Note 10+. So I can't confirm it works just yet. But anyway, having both connections on the end is much easier to work with.
There are also others with slightly smaller "boxes" or different shaped boxes, so pay attention to that as well. When I find this one and test, I'll update.

Edit: I confirmed the one I linked above works with PD, or at least it says fast charger connected and estimates 34 minutes to fully charge from 79%. So far, all the adapters and headsets I tried that I bought for the Pixel 2XL have worked with the Note 10+. So I think when shopping on Amazon, things that are compatible with the Pixel 2XL are compatible with the Note 10+.
I personally hate that they do this. They have to convert the audio for the speakers and then they just got cheap on not doing the same straight pass through connection for the USB C connector. Those USB C adapters are dirt cheap, though the ones with a DAC chip have come way down from when the only major phones that needed them were the Pixel 2's and the Essential phone or whatever that thing is called.

I'm assuming it does. I usually get a "weak charging" message when I use non-fast charging-compatible chargers. I've not seen that appear on my 10+ yet.

I received the dongle you linked to, today. Fast charging works when you don't listen to music at the same time when charging. It doesn't bother me though. I'm very happy with it ?

Tried a a few cheap adapters. All won't work. I found one Basues adapter that worked but the sound either dies or becomes mono when you touch the metal parts of the adapter.
I have this 3.5mm to usb c dongle from galaxy tab s5e.
Surprisingly, it doesn't work with note 10+. Only works with s5e.
Not sure why.
Anyway, the usb c headphone works in both device. So I only carry one.
I guess people will need to buy dongle from samsung as usual dongle not working, even the only from samsung for s5e.

The connection is firm for me. You should get an exchange or something.
again use apples dongle. its working for me no issues and its 7 bux.
If you go on ebay you can find the razer phone adapter. That seriously has a punch twice as loud as other adapters and powers bigger headphones way better. The 24 bit DAC is awesome.

You can get it from the razer site. I'm in UK so here's the link for the UK site. I'm sure it's available on other regional sites
https://www.razer.com/gb-en/mobile/razer-phone-audio-adapter
You can also find it on ebay for cheaper.
I've tested on note 10 plus 5g, one plus 7 Pro and mate 20 Pro and mic and volume buttons work fine
