Google camera on redmi note 5 pro - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey there,
I've been using my redmi note 5 pro for more than a week now, and straight up the camera packed on this thing is really good. But for a tech YouTube like me, who compares this phones with the top flagship devices, the results are inconsistent.
First off I compared it with iPhone X, and was shocked with the results. The redmi note 5 pro performed so much better than the iPhone X. Now some people may say that comparing the two is not fair as there is a humongous price difference between the two. But xiaomi itself said that the phone was a natural competitor with phones like iPhone X and Google Pixel 2.
SO I HAD TO COMPARE IT WITH GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL. But the results weren't so good. When compared to pixel's images, note 5 pro's images look washed out and soft. But it didn't lack completely back, as note 5 packing a bigger aperture did a little better than pixel 2 in low light situations, but again the results were pretty inconsistent. So at the end of the day no one can match Google's amazing algorithms of HDR+.
But I think if someone can port the Google camera in note 5 pro it will perform so much better as these two device pack almost identical camera hardware.
I'm not sure if camera 2 api is fully unlocked in this phone, can somebody please tell me how to do it. Do I just need to download the Google camera apk from the internet? I'm really curious to see how the redmi note 5 pro will perform with Google camera's algorithms.
Peace

You need to unlock your bootloader first and than flash twrp and magisk and than you can enable camera api 2 by editing Build.prop

Pixel has a bigger aperture, also with a larger pixel size than the note 5 pro... low light won't be better on the note 5 pro.
I rooted, enabled camera 2 api, installed google camera....but Google camera images had a lot of noise compared to stock camera(you can see noise on zooming into the pic)

Google cam cant make RN5Pro images better. No google phone has dual cameras so Gcam will always use single lens to capture images

Our phone is also using single lens to capture images except portrait

120 fps video recording
the soc snapdragon 636 can have the feature of 1080p recording at a frame rate of 120fps, so can we able to record this on redmi note 5 pro using any third party app by rooting?

yeah on redmi note 3

perhaps it is necessary to install modified driver for the camera. (if this exists).
in youtube i saw a video that teached where find and install the driver, then install google camera on a note 4.
the difference in the photo (with original driver and with modified driver + google camera) was remarkable.

The second camera in rn5p is a depth sensor! So the primary lens does all the work and gcam will only use the primary lens ! So why wont it make the images better.
Though for A1 both lens Gcam has been ported at it works great!!!

Redmi Note 5 GLOBAL/CN gcam samples?

Hello Could someone with the global/CN version of this device (the f/1.9 aperture) post some comparison between the stock and gcam photos? I'm especiallly curious about how much it helps in low light situations. I've seen some comparison on youtube, but unfortunately the guy had Indian version of this device which has different camera.
Thank you in advance!
I would like to see this as well. Also, I wonder how google camera on Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro compares to Xiaomi Mi A2 (performance/quality-wise)
Last one is in low light, the rest it seems are better detailed in gcam, also MIUI cam has trouble with red colors. Not a very big difference, not like kenzo with gcam.

Thank you very much, but I have to disagree there with you - many of the photos look a day and night difference to me, especially the chocolate rabbit; the stock camera sample is a grainy mess while GCAM turned it into a very decent photo. The petunia photo also shows much more details on the leaves and daylily looks just gorgeous on the gcam.
Thanks again, much appreciated :good:

Glad I could be of help.
Yes the low light photo has less noise than MIUI cam, I was mostly referring to the daylight photos. I own a Redmi Note 3, compared to stock MIUI camera, gcam on redmi note 3 takes 2-3 times better photos.
On RN5 the difference isn't as big as on RN3.
Have a look at these, some of them have even better details than RN5, in low light RN5 wins though. There's no need to tell which ones are from stock camera.

Mi Max 3 Gcam HDR+ vs Mi Max 2 Gcam HDR+?

Hi, was wondering if anyone could do a Mi max 2 Gcam HDR+ vs Mi max 3 Gcam HDR+ front and rear camera comparison? I would like to see the maximum potential of these two cameras to see how much it has improved and whether I should get this or just keep the Mi Max 2? Thank you!

Only a few people may have both of these phones and even fewer probably use gcam on them so I would not be to optimistic about someone posting a comparison. I have used the gcam mod on many different devices from Xiaomi and the results has more or less been the same. I would guess that Max 2 and Max 3
produce very similair results when using the gcam mod. Photo quality from smartphones are like 90% software optimization and 10% camera hardware quality.

Not at all. I owned a Redmi 5 Plus and Huawei Mate 10 at the same time. I prefered the low light photos from 5 Plus with gcam even tough Mate 10 has way better camera hardware.

It's true, I guess it was worth a shot. I'm only asking because I checked the mi max 3 vs pixel 2 gcam comparison on XDA the other day, and IMO the mi max 3 was better than the pixel 2 in almost all the shots, I was shocked myself, so I wanted to know if it improved by a lot when compared to the mi max 2.

In January I posted a comparison between Redmi 5 Plus and Mi 5S, using the ported gcam app on both phones.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/albums/72157692005458944
Even though Mi 5s has a "much better" image sensor, the photo quality was very close IMO. The reason? As I said earlier, the photo quality from smartphone cameras is mostly about software optimizations.
IMO all phones produce more or less the same results when using Gcam and HDR+. You may find minor differences here and there, but not any large differences.
I'm waiting Max 3 6G/128G. As I know Max 3 has all Samsung camera sensors which are more compatible with GCam so result will be better. HDR+ processing speed also improved on higher performance Max 3
I got both phone. And also the third one, the mi max prime, first of all! ^^.
All are rooted. But i'm in vacation. So... You need to wait. But I can allready said that mi max 3 cam is more more capable that cam of the mi max 1...

I have both Mi Max 2 and 3, both with GCam installed (but different versions)
The Max 3 has more/different GCams available (that don't crash), and thus has better quality

You should do yourself a favor and install a custom OS anyways, and have your phone rooted
One of the reasons I prefer Android is rooted apps that give me a more pleasant experience, like Adblock, custom keyboard add-ons, Xposed
It also takes 1 second to apply the Gcam patch if your phone is rooted

MIUI is getting alot better these days with all those extra features too.
we pretty much only need a custom kernel to squeeze more juice / performance from it and that's it.

Google Pixel 2 XL/Xiaomi Mi 8

Currently I have Xiaomi Mi 8. But recently there are some interesting offers for second hand Google Pixel 2 XL for about 390.5 USD. Quite confusing because Xiaomi Mi 8 has newer chipset (SD 845), better display (Samsung AMOLED vs LG p-OLED), and larger RAM (6 GB vs 4 GB). But in the other hand Google Pixel 2 XL has much stronger camera, stock Android, it's like a dream device. I'm just a casual user (messenger, social media, browsing, Spotify, taking some photos for Instagram feed) What's your opinion? Should I keep my Xiaomi Mi 8 or goes to second hand Pixel 2 XL?
Its all about personal preference, I had an S8+, then moved to a One Plus 6 and finally settled on a Pixel 2 XL all within a 6 month period
I'd heard so much about the camera that I wanted to try it and I can happily say I am not disappointed at all
Just download a custom Gcam for your phone and keep it. There's plenty for Mi8.
The difference in camera between Chinese phone with Gcam or Pixel is too small to be worth it.
Just look at my photo comparison to make up your mind. It's a cheaper Xiaomi, so your result works be even better.

Haha maybe we have same story. I used Mi5s then my friends bought it, so I bought Mi 8, then I try Mi A2, then I came back to Mi 8. Then these Pixel 2 XL offers come. Indeed it's up to personal preference. I also put concern on second hand device, especially for OLED display and its battery. I already try to search for Pixel 2 XL spare part and it's quite hard to find, in other hand Mi 8 spare part is easy to find, despite quite pricey

Already tried GCam on Mi8 and Mi A2. Yes, it's totally improve photo quality
I would say to buy it at a good price and use it. If you don't like the 2 XL simply resell it.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I have also used many phones recently ( S8, S9, P20 pro, P20, Honor 10, Pixel 1, Pixel 2 etc)
I always had HTC U11 with me as second device and now using Pixel 2 XL as primary device, I have made comparison of photos between them after installing Googel camera 3 ports and result are identical ..some photos in dark lights are even better on HTC U11 because it bring more lights ..Now U11 is underrated and I got almost mint U11 with all accessories for £190 while got mint condition used pixel without accessories for £247
What I like about pixel 2 Xl as compare to U11 is just stock software and quick updates but I have noticed many issues with Pixel 2XL i.e it get heated during intensive tasks i.e when you turn on hotspot while use the phone , it charge very slow with others fast chargers so if you don't have orginal fast charger then it will take ages to fully charge the battery while my U11 was able to charge phone quickly no matter what others spare fast charger I have used ..memory is also issue limited to 64GB, sound from earpiece during voice/internet calling is poor …Pixel 2 xl has bigger battery but screen on time is same or less than U11....Pixel 2XL give 6-6.30 hour screen on time on 4g while U11 was giving 7.00 to 7.30 hours on 4G..I have got few spare type C headphones of U11 but they don't work on pixel 2 xl
Pixel 2 XL Is great device but its far from perfect but people will keep it for stock experience and camera hype and by the way I was using Mi 8 Gcam port for U11 and developer B-S-G own Mi 8 so you get plenty of camera port from him for this device

Pixel camera or S20?

Did anybody moved from pixel devices to s20?
I was happy with my pixel 2 xl till the touch screen stopped working.
I was thinking of pixel 4xl but it's outdated I guess.
My eyes are set on s20 but I live in Europe and exynos is my destiny.
How is performance and camera compared to pixel devices?
You're going to get mixed answers. Personally, I'd take the S20. But I know people who think the Pixel camera is better still. Look at photos from each phone online and make the choice yourself.
I have pixel phone since 1. keept my pixel one, sold, the 2 and 3. Pixel 4 still around while testing S20.
IMHO - Selfie , pixel 4 no doubt. But general photos both get good results , it's seems to be a matter of preference, samsung amps the exposure , i like darker photos, but my gf say she likes sammy photos, also most of my family seems to like brighter photos. After the update S20 photos got little bit better , i still prefer pixel's ones sometimes, real life usage both are top cameras.
I traded my pixel 4xl for s20.
Better screen
Better wifi and signal
5g
Better processor and memory
Comparable camera
Missing esjm on s20
I had a pixel 4 and the s20 is superior in every way.....except for the camera!! I took my pixel 4 on vacation and the shots I was able to get were insane!!
I'm not saying the s20 camera sucks, but the pixel is just next level.

I prefer the S20 5G with Gcam mods, these are working very well, Nevertheless the original
camera app of the phone is very good . You can find in the web, these Gcam apk ONLY WORKS
IN SNAPDRAGON VARIANT.
Pixel 4 XL takes better still photos and night shots.
S20 takes better video.
If photos and updates are your top priorities, then get Pixel 4 XL.
S20 is better in every other aspect.
Exynos S20s are less efficient than Snapdragon models. You could import a Snapdragon S20 but it might not support the bands you need, so do research before going that route.

I have Snapdragon S20+
Samsung manufactures their own devices. Google relies on other OEMs to manufacture their Pixels. You can guess which has more inconsistent quality control, and also more likely to have hardware issues.
As I said before, Pixel still takes the best still photos. If you want the best camera for taking still photos and low light photos, then look no further than Pixel.
S20 still photos and low light photos are better than S10 series (including S10 Lite), but not better than Pixel.
Pixel video recording is ok, but not the best. Galaxy S20 video recording is much better.
If you want a "comparable camera experience to Pixel", then get a Pixel.
But other than still photos and night photos, the S20 beats Pixel in every way.

Exynos, Sorry . yes pixel's camera are so easy to get decent photos.
One thing that makes me stay with S20 over pixel at the moment is because in my country Android's Face Authentication are not working for my banks and many other apps , so i have to use passwords, and pixel 4 only has face auth. no finger print.

Mine is snapdragon.
S20 Photos is as easy, but have more option than pixel 4xl. Pixel 4 XL is simpler and best shots for point and shoot.
but same time s20 camera is not bad. But honestly I think pixel 4 xl camera for point and shoot is better. But overall s20 is better
