Is Greenify needed in Oreo? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I've been using Greenify for a while now on previous phones, but knowing about battery management options in Nougat and Oreo, I wonder if using it is still beneficial on the S9. So, any advice or feedback is more than welcome!

I was wondering the same.

I wouldn't explicitly say it's a necessity anymore since it literally asks you to put anything you don't use into sleep / hibernation mode, where it won't run in the background until you activate it yourself again.
I'm not sure how this works with notifications from Facebook, etc, but... hey.
And I don't think system bloatware can be touched by it, but this is why you use BK Package Manager or Package Disabler Pro + (both work for non-rooted.)

Thanks for your feedback. It'd be good to have the app dev answer this in greater detail, to see pros and cons of Oreo battery management vs. Greenify. As for using bloatware disablers on the S9, I still haven't checked any out.

Coming from the S7, I have to say I'm really impressed with Oreo and the S9's battery optimization so far. It gives you a notification whenever a background app is using battery, and it seems to have optimized "Android System" and "Android OS" which was always a big problem for me in the past.

To add to this once again, you can also put apps into permanent sleep (basically hibernation as I said above,) and they will not be allowed to execute themselves in the background I believe. I haven't been watching my processes, but they indeed never get asked to be put to sleep again by the system and aren't shown to be using battery. That said, I'm thoroughly impressed; it's just a shame you can't disable some system apps. Hopefully in the near future we'll have a mod that'll let system apps show up in the sleep menu.

The overview on the update sounds like a standard developer trying to get the audience's attention for how important the app is.
However, there's no mention of Oreo's built in Power Saving / Sleep functions at all, which leads me to believe there's little to no benefit other than automated tasks.

In my opinion it's device dependent since nougat as well as software version, freeze applications you don't use, changing what notifications you receive is more successful saving the battery than Greenify on my devices, all HTC had less successful on Samsung with identical settings, there is too many viable even with identical devices as you can be lucky or unlucky, as all manufacturing has tolerances

I didn't try with Oreo, but with Nougat (Resurrection Remix) on my G2 D802 I had to install Greenify to force aggressive Doze, otherwise Doze didn't often kick in, plus android alone could not stop a couple of apps, so I think it really depends on what ROM and apps are installed on the device.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ Battery Saving Tips

A phone even with killer looks and amazing features still needs a descent battery backup to support it all. In past we've seen that a few tricks here and there always tend to increase battery life. Usually that includes disabling a few apps or features. This thread is for specifically targeting such tips & tricks and sharing it all so that S6 Edge+ can live upto its expectations..
1. To start with, lets get to the list of bloatwares that can be safely disabled.
If any of you own the AT&T version, here's a list you can disable:-
AT&T Apps:-
AT&T FamilyMap
AT&T Hot Spots
AT&T Live
AT&T Locker
AT&T Mail
AT&T Mobile Locate
AT&T Mobile Transfer
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Ready2Go
AT&T Smart Wi-Fi
Drive Mode
Caller Name ID
Mobile TV
Plenti
Smart Limits
Yp (Yellow Pages)
Other Apps:-
S Voice
Amazon (I prefer the playstore version for frequent updates)
Amazon Kindle
Device Help
Live Weather (Yahoo)
Lookout
Theme Store
Visual Voicemail
2. Refrain from using any free application that has embedded advertisements. They tend to run threads in background to load adds and thus degrade the app performance and used data (so naturally consume more power too). Either buy add-free version or find an alternate app for same purpose and without adds.
3. Disable notifications from social media/news apps like Facebook, Twitter, Tapatalk, etc. Although, the phone wouldn't be that smart if all the notifications are disabled, however, keep them at bare minimum. Not everybody would be interested in notifications from all the apps, so spend some time analyzing through all the installed apps and their settings to turn off the notifications for the apps you do not need to get notifications for. There are several apps that keep sending notifications and running a thread in background which again checks internet to load the notification content. An example would be games like Candy Crush or Clash Of Clans.
4. Turn off "Send Usage Statistics" or "Help Improve the app performance", "Participate in improvement" etc settings from the app which sends data from your device from time to time which acts as a survey to improve the performance of the app. Although this is a necessary option for a developer, however, if you do not care about your granular contribution towards further development of the app, try deselecting such options while setting up new apps.
5. Refrain from using external Memory Management Apps and RAM Cleaners. They tend to run heavy background services to detect memory usage and kill applications. Trust me, you would be better without them.
6. Try using black wallpaper and lock screen. Also, always select Dark Mode if any app has theme section. This makes the pixels produce less brightness and considerably save more battery.
7. Keep GPS Location off when not using any navigational/location based apps. When the GPS is ON, there are some apps that tend to acquire a GPS Lock even though they can work without it. Keeping GPS Off will not allow such apps to request for GPS Lock. GPS Locking is a battery draining process.
8. You can use certain tools like Greenify, WiFi Automatic, etc. to automatically manage application states or phone wireless to save some additional battery. Use these only if you are lazy like me. Otherwise you can always manually turn on/off wifi/bluetooth/nfc etc etc. Also, there are tools (like Juice Defender) which can enable/disable data connective at a frequent interval which results in really good power conservation without loosing push notification.
With applying most of these settings, I'm getting 6-7 hrs of screen on time very easily even when I've downloaded 1+ GB data and 40 minutes of video chat (hangout). Not to mention the usual gaming and application usage.:cyclops:
I hope that helps. I'll keep adding if I get any (without root).
Reserved for future use!

I'm sure you mean rooting and installing all sorts of battery saving items/tweaking.
Marely rooting wouldn't bring any difference to battery life for sure!
Just tweak brightness, make sure you getting good signal and use WiFi when available, don't leave Abby of the radio on unless not using it and that shall be good I guess

It's the icon on the lower right corner of the screen that says "Apps". Once you get in there find the app that you want to disable. Long press the icon of the app and drag it to the upper left corner of the screen where it says "Disable". Then when the "Disable" word lights up red just release the app into there.
Check out my screenshot for an example.

Please tell me a solution if any one knows:
I open facebook and after some time i close this application by click on list tasks soft key and close it. Immediately when I go into setting > application manager > running apps I still see a facebook process running. Technically i guess this should be gone i guess and hence any idea how to clean these which i guess can improve battery life.
Update: If I have notifications turned on in facebook then yes it can still run some process even after I close it in Apps Tab but I see the same with Samsung Music Player i.e after I close it I still see a thread in "Running" Apps.

These kind of apps do tend to run a background process to check for updates. Closing the app doesn't necessarily mean that the processes will close. And I'm not even sure even if you turn off all the notification services of an app, all the related processes will close for sure, it depends. Also, if you are using apps like facebook etc, do not worry much about the battery life if you have turned off the background data usage and notification services. It will have very minimal impact, almost negligible!

List of Samsung Bloatware that can be safely disabled on the Note 7?

Hey Guys,
I currently have the international (N9300) version of the Note 7. Luckily I don't have any carrier bloatware to worry about.
But I was wondering if anyone has a list? Or could share a screen shot of what SAMSUNG BLOATWARE they have disabled with Package Disabler without having any problems?
My main goal would be to speed up performance / increase batter lift by disabling un-needed stuff from running in the BG. Just dont want to accidentally disable something that will screw up my phone, or get me stuck in a boot loop etc.
Thanks!
Is there any evidence that bloatware (whether from the manufacturer or the carrier) has any noticeable effect on performance? If not, de-bloating seems like a lot of trouble to go to for no real benefit.

I think it made a difference in earlier versions of the Samsung phones. In the past, I would aggressively debloating my phones. With the modern versions, and OS features for shutting down apps that are not in use, including Touchwiz's aggressive RAM management, I don't think debloating has a noticeable effect. I disable any unused apps to get rid of visual clutter, I don't go beyond that. YMMV

Yup, there was a time when debloating helped.

Just curious--what visual clutter do you mean? In the apps drawer?
You also get bothered with update messages for apps that you don't use. Much better to turn them off.
Better to rid yourself of them. Some of them use data in the background even when you have never opened them, all of them burn bandwidth updating, some will send unwanted notifications, some have various reporting you might not want going on, some will light off location burning battery.
The old saying is if you don't use it, lose it. It still applies.
I like to remove system apps that I don't use like email or attn and other stuff... package disabler pro is a good app but paid... you can connect your phone to a pc and use debloater that can be found here in xda
Thanks for all the replies! But can someone please post a list of what they feel is good to be disabled?

Agreed although I recalled mine when I get it back would be nice to know what is safe for the note 7 as most auto de bloater apps disable stuff that you don't want disabled. Would be good to have a proper list of all known safe bloatware and small description of each.

You have a couple of things running that are known battery pigs, i.e. Chrome, Whatsapp, Fit. Also check if your phone ever goes to deep sleep. Your Camera application as well sucked loads. If you used it a lot, it will dramatically reduce SOT.
If I was you, I'd try to freeze non relevant apps which run in background. Check the following links:
- Disable bloatware 1
- Disable bloatware 2
- Disable bloatware 3
In order to know how to use ADB, have a look at this video. You'll require to install ADB drivers, use the ones suggested in the comments below the description of the video.
In addition, try using Greenify (paid version if possible), it will allow you to force doze for several apps as well (have a look at the attached screenshot).
In short, my recommendations are:
- Get rid of almost every non essential app from Xiaomi (which basically means keeping only their gallery and file manager). Make sure you follow he recommendations given, otherwise you'll get an expesive paperweight
- Talking about weight, avoid heavy apps such as Facebook (use Facebook Lite instead), Twitter (Twitter Lite), Instagram (as you may have guessed, Instagram Lite), etc.; or even use their respective websites
- Use a different browser instead of Chrome (unless you want to deal with ads, RAM consumption and random stuttering). I'd encourage you to use Samsung Internet combined with AdBlock extension. You'll not regret it.
- For essential apps like calendar, clock, etc., use Google's ones.
- Make sure GPS is turned off (hold your finger on its toggle and make sure "Location access" is switched off, otherwise you'll keep running it in background and therefore wasting battery).
I guess I'm not forgetting anything. If you have more doubts, let me know
Disclaimer: I'm not responsible for what happens, make sure you're sure about what you're about to do prior to doing anything, it might have terrible consequences if this process is wrongly done (I'm talking by experience)

Can argue about some if them, for example I'd leave MI Account on. But this is the best list, IMO. Delete, freeze, or if not sure then at least restrict background usage (disable Auto-Start and use Greenify or similar).

Agreed, in fact it is mandatory keeping it if want to use themes. So happens with gallery (unless you want the screenshots capability broken). It mostly depends on what you need, and then act in consequence.

How do I get good battery life

Hi guys,
So around 1 month ago now, I got myself hands on a Note10+ (N975F)
I have been noticing screen off time drain, it is around 1.8% for me. I have tried using greenify, optimizing the settings, battery saving mode etc.
It hasn't really been working for me. Screen off time is really important for me, even more than screen on time.
So i wanted to know, how could I maximize the battery life of my Note10+? Is there like a custom rom you could recommend, like Lineage or dr ketan?
Knox is already tripped bcz of the previous owner, so that is no problem. Or a other custom rom or just with rooting something.
If you know anything, I would appreciate it if you could tell me,
Kind regards,
Crewz
First, you can select apps that you dont require to be always running, to be dormant, look for this option in settings, also you can install galaxy labs, there is a similar option there also, I disabled several apps via CCSWE, that have the undesirable behavior of being always running and accesing internet, such as facebook, chrome, youtube, operator apps, etc, also, with CCSWE you can deprive apps of certain undesired services that eat batt, this a process that takes some time, as you use the device, you can obseve and decide what to disable, to uninstall, or control via ccswe, I have my note 10+ since Sept 6 2019 and the battery lasts thru the whole day, I get some 7 hrs SOT on normal std use, when I play intensive games,, that is another diferent thing

Hey thank you for taking the time to help me. I have tried what you said, I went into settings and I went through my apps and selected those that don't need to run in the background. Decide if you want to root it, if so you'll have many more options and tools to work with.
Otherwise get PD MDM to block apks from running at boot and disable them.
Use Samsung Device Manager and set to Optimized in main window. Toggle on fast charging but don't enable any other off the top 3 dot menu. You can then disable that app too. 3rd party power management apps including Samsung's can screw it up. Cloud apps, Goggle Backup Transport/Backup Framework are big offenders on my stock 10+
Disable Google, Samsung and any carrier feedback.
To hell with Bixby except Bixby Vision/Vision Framework which are needed by the cam for full functionality.
Play with it.

Don't disable Bixby Framework either.
The feedback options are buried in settings, you'll run into them.
I'm not rooted so I don't spend much time looking at what I could do. You do have real time cpu/power usage capabilities with it for weeding out the hogs... for one thing.

Galaxy labs, Battery Tracker is useful.
See if Google Backup Transport or Framework are the culprits. If already package blocked clear their data and the data on Goggle Play Services ie gms.
It can be hard to ferret out as many apks simply are thrown together under Android Services.
Worse some Google apps falsely show under Transport etc even when its blocked. That why you clear the data of gms.
Use the factory load of Samsung Device Manager to globally clean caches. Reboots seldom help.
Turn off location, bt and wifi if not using.
Do not let Playstore run or Samsung updates unless your using them.
When running clean its ide current with screen on is typically in the 100-200 ma range. A few lower and higher. If you're getting a lot of spikes 400 ma and above at idle something is using a lot of the cpu resources...

So I installed Galaxy Labs and Battery Tracker.
I noticed that Google Foto's was on top with 7.1%.
Followed was whatsapp with 6.3%
And google play service was 3.78%
I haven't seen Google Backup Transport in the list.
Would there be like a way to turn off location automaticly when I am not using it, for example that it would only turn on for google maps or something?
Thanks for your time!

If you leave locations on it's a whore to a lot of apps including Google. Looks like you found your prime suspects.

Question A greenify app for OPO Android 13

Hello everyone and a happy new year to all!!
I run a business with my phone and used greenify to close all background apps (ig, fb, Twitter etc) from opening up and distracting from business text and email notifications popping up. And also saving battery.
But obviously I learned the greenify isn't being updated for a while and it's a nightmare to easily close certain apps I need closed. I still use it but it takes like 10 mins to close apps that I have chosen to be hibernated.
Is there an app for android 12 that I can use that actually works and closes my background apps in 10 seconds?
I wholeheartedly appreciate any answers!
Thank you all and please stay safe.

I use Ice Box to freeze and defrost apps when I'm not using them.
Thank you for your reply, I'm assuming that you're rooted?
And also when I do greenify all the apps (which takes forever) you know how when you want to share something, you hit "share" and Android opens up all the suggested apps to share with, that causes all the apps to wake up, does that happen with your method?

Hi, servicly is a good alternative for greenify, but for this to be operational android phone must be rooted..
Thank you, I was not trying to go the rooting route, I used to root and install nightlies like a mad man years ago. But now I'm out of the game. Just one question with that. Do you lose Ota updates rooting? Thank you very much.

No, freezing the app disables it until you launch it again. The other suggestion of Servicely may fit your needs better. Both require root.

You still get OTA updates when rooted, just have to do an extra step after installing to keep root. Install OTA but don't reboot yet, then install magisk to inactive slot, then reboot.
Oh I see, if I root then get the Ota it'll disable root and will have to root again. Got it.
But are you 100 percent sure that "share suggestions" don't open up all the apps? Because greenify froze my apps too but like I said before the "search suggestions" would reopen them.
And also does servicely and the other apps freeze quickly? Unlike greenify now that takes like 5 seconds each app to force close. Was so used to greenify it was so easy.
I really do appreciate your help and patience
For my part, i use a battery monitor app called BatteryGuru which has an option for doze configuration which puts apps in hibernation and your device in deep sleep same as the shortcut for sleep in greenify.
Hey, thanks. Do i need root?
Try Naptime.

BatteryGuru needs a set of permissions achieved with adb commands. There's how to guide in app.
Both icebox and brevent are good to go, neither requires root, you need to do adb or wireless debug though, easy to use and I also recommend Shizuku which helps a lot for non root but high previliege actions
Hello, and thank you again. But it seems like these apps are for doze. I'm more looking for an app that "force stops" apps. Preferably like a batch force stop like greenify did.
I want to pick and choose which apps I want running and which I don't.
Thank you and happy new year

Icebox works great with root. Never tried it without. It completely disables target apps like they aren't even installed on your phone. They don't show up in the share menu. The free version tackles 10 apps max. For more, you need the full version.
What @terlynn4 said about rooted OTA is correct, with the qualification that you will need to download the full OTA (4gb+), not incremental.
I'll definitely dabble again in rooting if needed be. Had so much fun with it since the first Android. But then just got older and busier and stopped sadly.
Now with this new oxygen colorOS crap it's a nightmare.
Does anyone know why greenify technically DOES work but takes so darn long to go thru its cycle on Android 12? Or is it just our OS that's like that?

Greenify was sold to some Chinese entity, and they haven't kept up with Android development.

It was definitely all good until Android 12. Now even the other apps that were like greenify do the same thing and take forever to cycle thru the apps and force stops them. I wonder why
Maybe because android 12 already "optimizes" apps and has a background app check that shows which app are running since when. Maybe not an expert here.I
know this is off-topic but If anyone is interested in a good close to stock android 12 source custom rom, i highly suggest StagOs 12. It spoofs a pixel 5 so you get all pixel 5 features. I like it very much.
I went on background check and there's only 2 apps there with a date that says March.
Dumb question guys/gals like I said since I haven't rooted in a looooong time.. If I root will it erase my phone? And if so what app do I use to make the best backup so I can keep my apps and data associated with it before I root. Love you all for the help.
