Messaging app update to version 5.0.11.8 available - Samsung Galaxy S9 Themes, Apps, and Mods

This appeared as a pushed update in the app itself, going into settings/ about. It adds expandable UI in contacts while in the app, and multiple contacts selection in contact list when in the app also.

noticed the same, without a detailed changelog it's a no go for me.

In Message app, the feature 'filter spam by phrases' is gone. How to get it back?

[Q] Disable contact pictures

hey!
just a short question: is it somehow possible to disable (remove!) the contact pictures that come with facebook-contact-sync?
thanks!
theo
edit: I am using InsertCoin HD-port
If it's just the Facebook ones you don't want, go into the settings of the facebook app and choose to not sync. Or if you don't want them to show at all go into the preferences of the Contact app.
I would like to sync all the facebook-contacts, but I don't want the facebook-contact-pictures coming with syncing "Facebook for HTC Sense".
the normal facebook app is not synchronising at all.
Open up the Contacts app and go through the settings to disable contact icons. To sync fully with Facebook, just go into the app, go into the settings and select sync all. If this doesn't work, go into Accounts and Sync and manually do it from there instead.

YES! thats what I want
but I can't find any "settings-menu" in contacs app ("people").
I am on InsertCoin HD Port - android 2.2.1
in contacts app I have only
-add contact
-view
-delete
-import/export
-search
-more (>blocked callers & linked contacts)
where can I find the option to disable contact icons?
THANKS!
Press the menu button on your Desire and it will bring up a little menu then just select settings. No idea what it's like on InsertCoin but should be still the same. They are there, you just have to find them. But seriously, press menu > settings.
arrr.
I feel like a real noob...I just can't find it :-(
as described above, when I am in my contacts app ("people") and press the menu-button I have only
-add contact
-view
-delete
-import/export
-search
-more (>blocked callers & linked contacts)
THERE IS NO "SETTINGS" option.
if you dont trust me I will upload some screenshots
cant imagine that there is no option like this in my HD-port...maybe I should ask in the Desire HD-forum...
nevertheless..thanks!
Sorry mate. I know what you mean now. Bloody native Android has it so you can get rid of the contact icon but Sense doesn't. I installed Sense earlier and I can't find anything. Guess you could get a 3rd party app and use that but as far as I can tell, it's not going to happen.

[Q] Favorite Contacts list. Can it be changed from large icons to a scroll list?

I'm coming from the OG Droid (Android 2.3). There the favorite contacts list was a simple scrollable list.
In ICS 4.0.2 its a ridiculously oversized mosaic with pictures for each contact. I have too many favorites for that to be practical.
Where is the option to change the list from Icons to a Scroll list? Will I be forced to use a 3rd party app for that?

Oh, it's so, so crap isn't it?
And I have almost no contacts with pictures so it looks even worse. I've un-stared all of my contacts for this reason.
I also made some additional mods to the contacts app linked below:
* Removed contact picture from Recent Calls list - now a simple list
* Removed contact pictures from Frequently Called - now a simply list
Since I now have no favourites I don't have the problem you have with that list and my mod does *not* address that sorry... but it might help a bit.
Indeed I have no need for favourites any more because the Frequently Called and Recent Calls lists are sufficient for me.
I may look into the favourites section at some point but as I say, since I don't use them it's not a priority.

[Q] How to remove default app links on a rooted phone..??

Hello Frnds,
Recently I rooted my phone as I wanted to remove my stock SMS app due to missing functions as described in my previous post and also to remove the stock contact app as there is no provision to add birthday. After rooting, I removed these two apps and some of unwanted apps provided by SE. I installed new phonebook app and Handcent SMS app and I was happy unless I needed to add a new contact to my phonebook. When I click on add new contact , it showed me an error message saying application not found to handle this. When I again reinstalled the removed Contacts app back and click on add new contact from my new phonebook app, it opened the add new contact page of the Contacts app i.e. without Birthday entry. I was so annoyed to see that I landed up on the same path from where I had started.. Can anyone tell me how can I chagne the default link so that I can use the Add Contact funtion of new app Phonebook and not of the Contacts app.
Most of such replacement apps, especially messaging ones, need to work along with the corresponding default one. As far as I know, only GO SMS can work individually, but again, it's not recommended to uninstall such vital system apps because they are deeply integrated in stock ROM.

Thanks for ur reply.. But as u must know that there is not provision to add birthdate in the stock contacts app and even if I add some other app from market which has provision to add birthday and click on add new contact, it again opens the same stock contacts app's add contact page...

That last part is the third-party app's issue.
See, there are three elements in a Contacts app: the dialer, the contact list and the contact viewer.
Some apps include only the first two, thus when you open a contact, stock app (and more specifically InfiniteView) appears.
As for birthdays, if you sync your contacts with Facebook inside Xperia, you'll get them.
Or you could add a note to each contact with their birthday.

Is it possible to do these things on the Galaxy Nexus?

I'm a new GNex owner, and having used other Android overlays such as HTC's Sense, I was wondering if it's possible (if there are any mods possibly?) to do:
- Link Facebook status updates with contacts
- Link Facebook pictures with contacts
If the two above are not possible:
- When setting a 256x256 picture that is good quality as a contact picture, is there a way to have it remain good quality? Every picture I assign contacts looks like crap and pixelated
Adding on:
- Is it possible to create folders in the app drawer?
- Is it possible to change the color of a new message in the text messaging application? When you get a new text it's white instead of light grey, and it's hardly noticeable which conversation is the new one.. is there a way to set the new conversation (in the message inbox overview) to say a light blue that matches the rest of the UI? Or even have a notification beside the message (where it displays all the messages) to let you know which one if the new message?
Thanks.

**I believe there is an app called hacksync or haxsync (not sure on the spelling) that lets you link up contact pics through facebook. having never used it I can't tell you if it is in the store or here on XDA. I would do a search and I'm sure you'll find it.

**Unfortunately this is a problem on Google's end. The servers they use to store contact information on have very low picture resolution. like 96x96 low. Solution: in the account settings, turn off sync google pics or use hacksync

**Neither one of these options are possible unless your rooted. even then I haven't seen a mod for adding folders to the app drawer. It could be out there but I doubt it. There are mods for changing the apperance of the stock msg app but you are limited to whatever the themer wants it to look. (I actually feel the same way about the calender ut so far I haven't seen a good replacement theme for it yet). however, if you want full control to customize your SMS the way you want, you can either download GO SMS or Handcent SMS from the store. Both offer full customization for all aspects of the application.
I hope this helps

Not to my knowledge. Definitely not in stock.

Alternate SMS apps can surely configure colors.
Thanks for the responses.
I downloaded HaxSync and it's awesome! The pictures are good quality and it shows recent activity from my contacts.
I'm going to try an alternative messaging application. If I have two messaging applications open though at the same time (does the stock messaging app run as a background process all the time?), will it slow my phone down?

It will run, and is required to fetch the messages. It won't slow anything down.
Go launcher EX allows you to make folders in the app drawer i believe.
I havent used it for a while but its a really good replacement launcher and has tons of features.
You might like that.

It'll be fine mate, just remember to turn off the notifications in the stock messaging app.

Not at all. Just disable notifications in the stock app and you're good to go with the replacement.
I'm on stock yakju 4.04 and yes, I'm able to create a folder and drag it to my app tray.

And how exactly do you do that?

Changing the "recent contacts" messaging app when sharing.

There is a REALLY cool feature I'd like to be able to utilize where the G4 pulls up your most recent contacts when you start to share something.
*see attached image* (names and numbers have been edited out for privacy reasons)
Only problem is, that even though my default messaging app is Next SMS if I select one of these recent contacts at the top. It still opens up "messaging" to send the message. Which actually is very limiting because it doesn't like not being default with MMS's.
Is there an easy way to change that behavior?
Thanks,
Gilligan
