Review
For those following my reviews you will notice that this one (and all other that might be released in the future) is different. Why? I don't want my reviews to be all the same anymore, so i am adopting this new format that is shorter, easier to read and without lots of photos.
Joining the battery phones area, the BLUBOO S3 comes with an huge 8500mAh battery (real capacity, confirmed with my USB Tester) but low/mid-end specsfor the 2018, probably the only real downside about this device.
Something that really impressed me is the amount of accessories provided in the box, absolutely outstanding, and here is a full list of them: 1x Type-C to Micro/Type-C/Lightning USB to charge other devices, 1x Type-C to USB A adapter, 1x Pump Express Charger (up to 12v), 1x USB Type-C Cable, 1x Type-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack adapter, 1x Extra Plastic Screen Protector and 1x Black TPU cover. The most complete set i have ever seen for a smartphone, seriously.
Nothing to complain about its build quality, it is well-made with no imperfections, even though i am not an huge fan of this plastic back case since it makes the device really slippery and doesn't feel nice in the hand. I like the visual effect though, similar to a grill. The weight that BLUBOO declares can be confirmed, 285g based on my scale, not extreme considering the metal chassis.
The FHD+ 18:9 screen is just perfect, pretty bright, with excellent colors and a reasonable refresh rate (not excessive smearing effect can be noticed). Bezels are limited enough, but could have been slimmer.
Something i have to complain about is the software. BLUBOO writes Android 8.1 on the box while the device runs Android 7.0 instead. Sure, i know that the website says Android 7.0 (upgradable via OTA to 8.1 soon), but you can't write false things on the box, instead "7.0 (8.1 via OTA)" would have been better and fair. I hope to not see this happening again.
Anyway, the Android 7.0 Nougat OS (usual Mediatek release) runs decently but its smoothness is limited but the chipset that isn't ideal to handle a FHD+ screen. An Helio P23 or P25 is the minimum for this resolution IMHO.
But, there is something really important to say about this software release: it doesn't come with any malware/virus unlike what happened with all previous BLUBOO devices. Well done BLUBOO for the positive change.
This is the first device, as far as i remember, that comes with a dedicated option to charge other devices. I am not sure if it does allow more than the usual 0.5A USB current, but i doubt it is just a placeholder option. Unfortunately i don't have an USB trigger that can be used together with my tester to show the real current, but if some of you can do this test, please leave here a post.
Confirming what i mentioned before, benchmarks are quite low due to the high-res display, but some of them (those not GPU-intensive) perfectly match other MT6750T devices.
Here you can see all of them: https://imgur.com/a/CeKxs6t
Unfortunately the GPS Antenna is the achilles heel of this device, completely unusable indoors (left), and just decent outdoors (right).
Average 4G signal reception with decent speeds, and the same applies to 3G networks. Unfortunately there is no WiFi AC support, but in WiFi N-mode 5GHz i am able to get the maximum speed from my internet connection.
Camera are slightly over average for a battery phone, with a Samsung 16MP sensor for both sides (back and front), holding the second primate about this camera configuration, never seen before. The back camera is able to shot sufficient photos, as noisy as on all Mediatek Devices coming with this camera sensor, and sometimes, without HDR mode turned on, photos seem to be over-exposed, but the amount of detail is impressive unless the amount of available light decreases. Let's say that it requires just some minor improvements via an OTA update.
Finally, the battery life of the beast. First of all, i need to clarify something about this MT6750T chipset. It is super power-hungry, not power efficient, and on this device it is stressed to the maximum due to the max resolution. What does it mean? It means that even with such a big battery, it is hard to get good results, and the PCMark Battery Test can confirm that, only 18h. The Helio P23, with smalller batteries, is able to exceed that result. Still, it is not a bad result, just don't expect miracles even though the battery capacity is real.
What to say about this device...if BLUBOO (or well, sellers) manages to keep the price low, i think it can be declared as one of the best Mediatek battery phones available on the market, as long as they maintain the promise about this declared Android 8.1 Oreo OTA update.
Recommended to those who don't mind about the weight and thickness about a device.
Device Rating: 8.3
Pros: Decent Battery Life; Solid and sturdy; Excellent Screen
Cons: No Headphone Jack; Outdated and slow Chipset; Disappointing GPS Quality

Who's the first to publish TWRP for this phone? ?
And if someone could add the stock ROM to needrom.com so thus I could install Magic Manager to it ?

Anybody who has found out to mute the booting sound of the phone? It's pretty annoying, especially when the kids are sleeping and you have to turn on your phone.

BluBoo has provided the original stock rom and a S3 customized flash tool for download on their forum.
community.bluboohk.com/forums/topic/instructions-of-bluboo-s3/

Some information about GPS: drove approx. 400 kms today and GPS never lost its track. So it ain't bad. Seen worse GPS antennas among Chinese Android phones.

what android?

hey Sensonic can you help us out with the files you used?
I found a version recently updated on needrom but Im not sure if something is wrong with it. I can unlock and flash it fine and use TWRP but thats where it ends.
needrom.com/download/twrp-3-2-1-for-bluboo-s3/
I get a request for a decryption password I dont have nor ever setup (phone is encrypted from the start in the menu) done the "default_password" ive setup a pin, swipe, etc and none of them will unlock.
I did some googling and people say to wipe the data but the phone just keeps returning to TWRP regardless of what I do.
Ive had to restore it with the original bluboo recovery just to get the phone to boot correctly again.
I must be missing something here.
edit: so I used twrp to update the boot with a magisk patched one then used twrp to overwrite itself with the stock recovery and now it boots fine with root. so kinda round about and I still cant use TWRP but at least it kinda works?

OK, goes like this. BTW, I'm not responsible if you'll brick your device etc.
You need:
-ADB Fastboot or similar
-Mediatek drivers
-SP Flashtool
-Bluboo S3 ROM
-TWRP img file
-patched Magisk Manager boot file
1. Unlock bootloader: Go to developers options and tick "OEM unlock" active.
Open ADB Fastboot (I presume you have MTK drivers already installed)
Connect your phone to your computer. Type "adb reboot-bootloader". The phone will boot itself to bootloader
Type "fastboot oem unlock" and press enter. Then push VOL plus on the phone. The phone will boot twice and ERASE ITSELF TO FACTORY SETTINGS.
2. When the bootloader has been unlocked, go back to developer options and enable USB debug.
Go to http://community.bluboohk.com/forums/topic/instructions-of-bluboo-s3/
Download ROM and SP Flash Tool (if you already don't have it on your computer)
3. Download TWRP img file: needrom.com/download/twrp-3-2-1-for-bluboo-s3/
4. Open SP Flash Tool, select scatter file from the ROM. Rename aforementioned image file to recovery.img and flash only that file to your phone. Now you have TWRP on your phone.
5. Power on your phone put the boot file of the ROM to your phone.
6. Install Magisk Manager APK to your phone. Choose "patched boot file" and point where you've saved the aforementioned boot file. The phone will save patched boot file to Magisk Manager's subfolder.
7. Connect the phone to your computer and save that patched boot file to your computer. Rename it to boot.img and replace the original boot.img file of the aforementioned ROM.
8. Open SP Flash tool, select scatter file again and flash only the aforementioned boot.img file.
Done. You have TWRP and a rooted phone :good:

Is there a reason to use the SP Flash Tool instead of fastboot other than flashing the entire ROM file? Is there anything different that the tool does from "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" that it should be used instead?

fastboot frequently mess up the partition layout on mediatek devices due to a poor implementation. Also, it forces you to unlock the bl, while with sp flash tool you can flash anything you want without unlocking it.

Hi All! Thanks for the info and review.
I have one of these and seem to have run into a couple of issues. Maybe the owners can help me figure things out.
1. I can't seem to get my Sd to work on my phone. I tried to format it on the phone but it gets stuck.
2. It gets hot, very hot when changing and pretty hot when I am using it for more than 5 or 10 mins.
3. For the life of me I can't figure out how to put the phone in silent (no vibration)
Any advice or info is thoroughly appreciated!

i have root my bluboo s3 with supersu entering twrp recovery
after flashing twrp recovery with flash tool i flash the zip with supersu and reboot and that it

go to needrom.com search for bluboo s3.there you will find the zip.

Many actually useful google apps are not compatible with this phone and google play store displays message in settings device not certified.
For example google pay app is incompatible.
Battery is also fake, no way it has 8500mAh capacity, it burns in minutes

After you root your phone you can install supersu from playstore and you ready.
You can also root it with the installation of twrp.
RECOVERY:http://www.needrom.com/mobile/recovery-twrp-2-7-1-0-kk-for-thl-5000/
Download from playstore and use MobileUncle to flash recovery, place .img file into root of your memory.
you have to have the twrp-2-7-1-0-kk-for-thl-5000 recovery.img file of your phone before you flash it put them in your sd card
Instruction :-
1 first root your phone
2 install mobile uncle tool.apk
3 open mobile uncle tool
4 select flash recovery then select the twrp-2-7-1-0-kk-for-thl-5000 recovery
5 then reboot your done with flashing recovery
Another way to install the twrp is with the flashtool, download it from needrom also download the factory rom from needrom, run the flash tool program locate the scatter file in the factory rom then go to recovery and locate the twrp file uncheck all the files except the recovery file ,then change to download only and press download, this procedure must be done without the phone connected, after you press the download button switch off your phone then keep pressing the red reset button behind the first sim slot insert the usb cable and then release the reset button the procedure should start if the procedure don’t start it means that you’re missing the preloaded drivers of mtk.
With this way you can also installed a factory rom.
Tips:Xposed Framework and Gravity box after the latest update v3.4.0 are working perfect.
For Titanium Backup and Mobileuncle to make it work, change the supersu, install this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.superuser
if you want you can download the zip file and install it from twrp.
Factory roms:
http://www.needrom.com/download/thl-5000-16p128-mt6592t/
The latest version v1.0.8 can be update only from flash tool, fixed status bar lag, very fast more free ram,and wifi show connected but no internet access fixed.

Great device
HHow about battery life and screen on time?
Yes excellent device, I have received the phone yesterday and I was trying to root it and installed the recovery so I don't have screenshots of the battery yet, one is thing is that the phone was at 4% the previous day and it last about 2 hours of 3/4 of use before it shut down.

Thank you for this post, I'm considering this for my next phone and I was wandering about rom customization. The original rom is good?
I don't know this brand, I'm wondering if it is compatible with cyanogenmod or miui, do you know?

Compatible with MIUI, it is easily ported throughout all mtk6592 devices. Not cyanogenmod though
It seems that the major drawback for development is mediatek not releasing the source codes, but they seem to be trying to change, they opened the mediatek labs to give support to developers. Don't know how this will work though... I hope they finally release the source codes soon.
Edit: I've seen a video stating this phone has an amprius battery, it's a company that is supposed to be making major breakthroughs in battery development... anyone knows how to confirm this?

This phone has a 4.35v 5000mAh 19.00Wh Silicon Anode Lithium-polymer (Li-po) Battery.
Amprius (Brand) is Lithium-ion (Li-ion) .... (Google it) ... http://www.amprius.com/
I'm leaving mine alone until the warranty runs out....Might root it though.
I'm just put in 'Next Launcher Pro' and using that rather than the MiUi.
The original rom is actual pure android with some themes,if you install the xposed framework and gravity box you can edit the rom as cyanogenmod, about miui sure, cyanogenmod i do not think so.

My first concern was the GPS - so I rooted one of them, installed MT GPS EPO Fix, FasterGPS & GPS Status.
GPS seems to zero in after 2 seconds. I'd like to note that when "sensor filtering" was set to "none" in GPS Status, it would see the satellites but not acquire a fix. With any other option it's ok.
(I didn't test the performances before applying these mods - I'll try it with the other phone later)

This is a collection thread of the Fastboot ROMs files for Mi1/1S/2/2S/2A/3/Pad.
Fastboot is one way to flash ROMs to your phone, it's safer than flashing in Recovery mode. Different phones enter Fastboot mode differently, e.g. for Xiaomi devices, you should turn off your phone, and hold the Volume+ & the Power button at the same time. You could find the way for you device using Google. When flashing ROMs in fastboot mode, you should connect your phone to the computer via USB cable.
The files are arranged reverse from the latest ROM version, please pay attention when downloading.
You could use Ctrl + F to quickly find the ROM version you're looking for.

got it!
I just received mine this mourning still testing it.
Looks great, seems fast and performing... was searching a safe way to root it, though. Any help?
Quick review and questions
Thanks ghost45 for starting this thread.
My ZP920 arrived yesterday.
It seems pretty quick, but antutu froze during the 3d graphics test and the final score was only 32000 ??
Battery life seems very poor at present, down to 1% after 24 hours, although about an hour of that was on wifi, my old ThL W8 would do better. I've noticed that when I switch off and connect charger the screen immediately shows 27% charge, not the 1% before switch off. Anybody any clues ? faulty battery ?
Does anybody know which usb drivers are required and (ideally) a solid method for rooting the mtk6752 ?
I'm looking forward to progressing with this phone and hoping it is as good (well much better than) my old faithful - but slow - W8.

Hi, update,
Antutu v5.5 works well gives score 41450! (v5.6 still hangs at 3D graphics test ?? bug? also it doesn't list 64bit/32bit cpu test?)
Camera on mine works brilliantly for stills and video - skype video is best ever.
Battery life getting better after a couple of recharge cycles, now getting nearly 4 days mostly on standby.
Has anybody tried the Ghost45 rooting method yet ??
If I root manually (by su binary adb push from linux host etc) will this still void warranty and block future ota updates (i.e. to Lollipop)?

My Update :good:
- yes the camera, overall is pretty good, excellent with decent lighting
-battery life is getting better every day (i'm at the 5th recharge cycle): after a full working day with medium usage, i'm still at 71%
-i found a post on zopomobileshop forum explaining how to root the device with the alert:
Remember after received the right root is not possible to apply the update of new firmwares.
Still havent tried yet, was hoping to get Lollipop on it.

Hi,
I interested this phone, but i don't know what's about battery life. How many ours can you use the smartphone (time on screen in battery setting) in normal usage (wifi, 3G, games etc.)? Thank you in advance.
Could someone please run androbench and post the first 4 results. And if you run the benchmark several times, does performance drop significantly?
Thanks

My Chuwi Hi9 Air shipped this morning, expected delivery 12th May with free shipping.
Still b/o for me ?
Well, my order from 4/15 still on b/o as of today. Hoping for any cell connectivity since the band 4 "disappeared" from earlier announcements! I travel a lot so should be good in row.
Currently running row ROM on nvidia shield tablet but battery life has become terrible in the last few updates. At least it gets hspa+ in USA and LTE elsewhere on the planet. And the big + was never had to wait on ATT to bless an update!
Going to use this Chuwi to replace a pipo m6 pro w/custom rom Itravel with.
Let us know all about it as soon as you get it!
Edit: Now they say shipping 5/15.....maybe I should get interest on the cash I gave them 4/15.....???
Will hold tight. I have time to cancel if the first hands on reviews are terrible!

Hi! I just started looking into Chuwi products. I'm anxious to hear your review of the Hi9! I also would like to know why did you choose the Hi9 and not the Hi10?
Thank you!

Hi, I’m still running some benchmarks, I will post a review soon.
One important point to note, this is the Chuwi Hi9 Air not Hi9. Big difference!

Well, if I should ever receive mine I am glad to see they may update a few things! Ordered 4/15 still not shipped. Thanks much for your unboxing on YT. Hopefully the updates won't disable any wifi or cellular bands!

You say in the video that there will be no custom rom flashing due to A-Only, how does that correspond with the fact that A-only system.imgs are available?

And is the Android Security Patch updated in the new OTA?

I checked, all the bands are still there! The LTE is apparently up to cat 6.

Kingrow K1 eInk (8.1, MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763))

Just learned about GIS. Still using a Galaxy S4 w/Lineage, but am a huge fan of eink everything and impulse pre-ordered this new black and white phone from new and unknown Chinese vendor. Alleged to ship in August.
Assumed I was just going to use it off line as an ebook reader (to replace my kobo mini), but GIS has given me hope that there is a chance for a (relatively) safe/unbloated life for this device beyond that.
I’m sure there will be some eink optimization in the official ROM, but am less concerned about that than I am mysterious Chinese software.
Would love to hear anyone’s thoughts. I am more than happy to contribute to the cost of a Getting a test device in capable hands if necessary.
As a privacy enthusiast would also appreciate thoughts on hardware security on random Chinese phone as well. This is the first time I’ve ever gone out on such a limb.
Kingrow K1 Specs
5.17-inch E Ink Carta display (1280 x 720 with 283 ppi).
Frontlight.
2.0GHz MediaTek Helio P23 (MT6763) octa-core processor.
16GB of storage space.
2GB of RAM.
MicroSD card slot with support up to 64GB.
3100 mAh battery.
8MP rear camera with LED flash and auto-focus.
Android 8.1 Oreo operating system.
Dual SIM.
USB-C port.
Dual speakers.
138 x 72 x 8.5mm.
Thanks in advance.
Just realized one particular hardware issue may be the front light (since screen is not backlit like an LCD) and the controls may not be identical to backlight controls. I hope it treats the screen brightness identically and that it won’t be an issue.
Bump. For this type of preocessor I’ve only seen one example of getting stock android running relatively easily, anybody have any insight on what I can expect in the attempt?
I waited with backing this project on Indiegogo, because of the lack of GMS. I hope that could be fixed through another rom. But I doubt there will be a big developer crowd for this device. Nevertheless its nice to see it here on XDA. Followed!
Hi, I just got my Kingrow K1 in the mail today. I've always wanted an e-ink smartphone for longer battery life + less distraction, so I'm pretty excited about this. Unfortunately, the preinstalled software looks rather clunky and, as you mention, it might include random Chinese bloat/spyware. I'm hoping somebody can root this thing and we can get a developer scene going for it.
Some of the work done for Barnes & Noble Nook devices might be relevant, as those are also e-ink devices running Android.
For future reference, here's a list of everything installed on the stock ROM. I'm still trying to sort out what it all is, I think all the MTK* stuff are alternatives to missing Google packages provided by MediaTek.

I've managed to get the device into fastboot mode. I'd like to flash a custom recovery like TWRP, but I don't know which one is compatible with this device. Any suggestions?

No, I don't have the stock firmware. If you can point me to some instructions, I'm happy to try to extract a copy of it and post it here.
Kingrow K1 doesn't let me log in to google services
Hi,
I'm not a developer, sorry for my lack of knowledgle, however I'm desparate to find a sollution, maybe you can help me here.
I've bought the Kingrow K1 only to find there's no way of signing in to google accounts, contacts, callendar etc. $%^&*()!~
I hope it's just a question of installing and configuring the missing pieces.
Can you please help me out?
Tom
Maybe flashing Gapps like on AOSP? ?
You could try flashing a gapps package like https://opengapps.org/ but I don't know if it will work without root.

Without TWRP
We even have no stock firmware. I see it's a first step to acquire it.

Hello, I've worked on a MT6763 device before. You may be in luck because MTK devices have built-in flash mode you can access. This would mean you can dump partitions provided you locate their offsets (if you can get hands on a scatter file, that would help a lot). The flash mode also allows you to bypass any locked bootloader (though, you don't seem to face such issue, but nice to know it's possible) restrictions. You may also be able to dd the blocks and create a stock firmware dump for backup. A good chance TWRP can be ported without kernel sources by using a very similar device's port as a base and dropping your current recovery image's kernel and fstab values in it.
I do not own this device myself, but I am interested in any findings regarding this topic. Good luck.
EDIT:

Can you tell me how your /dev/block structure looks like, (use ls). If you navigate deep enough, you will see "by-name" folder, you can then dd the "boot" partition as a boot.img file.
EDIT2:
Actually, I suggest just dd'ing your system partition to your PC. You can also flash GSIs using fastboot. By dd'ing your system partition, you essentially make a fallback in case the image fails.

Thanks for you answer @Cernodile. I'm the guy Ti He who posted in the FB group.
I'm currently trying to port a TWRP to our device. First I did a full read with Miracle Box, so in case something goes wrong I can restore my device. I used a TWRP from Cubot King Kong 3 because it has the same SoC and GPU. I unpacked my stock recovery and the Cubot recovery and replaced files like recovery.img-kernel
recovery.img-kernel_offset
ramdisk/prop.default
ramdisk/init files
ramdisk/ueventd.rc
ramdisk/ect/recovery.fstab
I flashed the repacked recovery through fastboot and booted into TWRP. I assume that TWRP would have been booted, because I can do adb devices and see my phone in recovery. But the display only shows some black lines, so there must be something wrong. Do you have any idea where to look at? See attached the log from /cache/recovery/.
Regards - Timo

That seems already quite promising! It seems like your device is trying to render some TWRP elements, perhaps you have wrong resolution set as suggested by "framebuffer: 3 (344 x 725)". What would assist me here greatly would be .prop files from stock and your TWRP port such as default.prop.
I also attached the Scatter file from my device on my last post.
See below the prop files from stock and port (Cubot King Row 3).
(I also tried with port TWRP from Umidigi One Max but with the same result)

First inconsistencies I see:
This is in your stock, but not port.
Code:
ro.product.cpu.abi=arm64-v8a
ro.product.cpu.abilist=arm64-v8a,armeabi-v7a,armeabi
ro.product.cpu.abilist32=armeabi-v7a,armeabi
ro.product.cpu.abilist64=arm64-v8a
dalvik.vm.isa.arm64.variant=cortex-a53
dalvik.vm.isa.arm64.features=default
dalvik.vm.isa.arm.variant=cortex-a53
Although, I don't think that is the cause. I'd keep looking for a device that has e ink patches for TWRP, you can use that as base, rebuild the similar device's TWRP and then do same port method.
