DP3 UX Operation/Visual Differences - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So far I've noticed the following. Note this list doesn't include obvious things like "the recent menu now has a clear all". Also I have put this here because I suspect some of the topics will be "where did x go"? Moderators, feel free to move this to the discussion forum if you want.
1. Unfortunately Google has severely toned down or else removed many of the navigation-related animations that were present in DP2. I loved them...
2. The color mode preview image in settings is now a hummingbird instead of simply a drab background.
3. The AOD now has the At A Glance weather image tacked onto the date portion. This includes color, as my display currently has a yellow sun mark.
4. Using gesture navigation, it is now much easier to actually call up the recent list: it kind of pops in place now, aided by haptic feedback that some on Reddit are already complaining about.
5. The "separation icon" that replaced the mini arrow above the homescreen's docked apps is now gone entirely.
6. Haptic feedback overall feels much stronger than before.
7. Some language-translation things have been fixed, yet new ones have appeared. For reference I have my phone set to Japanese and the "Support" tab in Settings is now listed in English whereas before the title was in Japanese, and the gesture navigation setting is now titled in Japanese whereas before it was in English.
8. The OS version is now listed as 9, instead of P.
9. The Sharing menu setting now includes a tab of "previously paired" devices.
10. The home screen now requires manual setting to allow rotation when auto-rotate isn't enabled.
11. The native scaling seems to have been adjusted (or broken) as the navigation bar-based clock seems to either be smaller than before, or else glitch between large and smaller.

Anyone know how to get rid of this? The squashed notification when the quick settings is fully expanded?

I don't want to clear it. I want to interact with it. Sometimes it's hard to reach a notification so I use a gesture to expand the quick settings tile further so I can hit reply or Mark as read.

So you want full quick settings expansion AND full notifications at the same time? Has it ever been like that? I can't recall.

It's been there forewer if you didn't update Google app . . .
Since most of the users did, it dissapeared. For me it was there for the whole Beta 1 stage, earlier I didn't pay attention to it.
Now Playing now works consistentlly, when you double tap on the song, it takes you to Asistant directly with more info displayed.

New note 7 Update notification system changed

Anyway to switch back to the old notifications appearance? I don't like the new notifications pull down with the app icons, looks too bulky and in your face and quite child like, the first iteration of the note 7 (pre-update) looked alot more slick and professional. Just wondered if anybody noticed this and if their is anything we can do about it.
Looks like we're stuck with it.

Ah. Our update in Canada was considerably smaller. No gimping of old devices to 60% either.

Why Tmobile only? Odd no...
Although my VZ still has the old style full setting menu.
Are you guys also getting the awful grouping of notifications? If you have more than one notification for the same app, they are clumped together now and you can't see what they are until you tap to expand them. Totally defeats the whole "at a glance" notification concept.

Mine was like this from day 1. Wtf
Yes, so annoying and no option to choose between individual and grouped notification...
Omg, Samsung keeps finding ways to make this worse, like if the new green battery icon was not enough, now they get even further away from Google guidelines by ditching the cards style notifications? Guess I'll switch to the Pixel XL or OP3. Note 7 had everything to be the king and for the first time I was enjoying the Samsung UI with Grace UX, no more however...

I'm in the US and didn't get an update to change notification panel at all. I got the green battery symbol (which I kinda like) but that's it. Everything else looks normal

Unfortunately, I have T-mobile and the update changed the notifications to this garbage. My friend is on att and his update only changed the battery icon. I could find no way to disable the grouping. :/

I don't mind this for Tapatalk and Twitter because they are so "noisy" with updates, but I definitely don't like it for the launcher, where it is grouping charging, weather and other things,I want to see all launcher notifications independently.
P.s here in Australia, the unbranded N7 got this particular update 1 week after launch, then of course we all got the 60% update a couple of days ago..

Working fine. I don't use it often but didn't realize it only does one line of text and needs adjustment in it's highlighting. Even though the "t" at the end doesn't look highlighted, it was copied.

Yeah, for some reason I go to long press to select something and nothing happens, then if I let go, it just opens the app that I am long pressing on.
There is a setting in the Pixel Launcher that I found for it. Pixel settings - Suggestions - Overview selection. This was/is toggled on and it still is not working. I tried to toggle it off and back on again, no luck.
Very strange. I toggled it off and on and the option works for both. The obvious restarting your phone doesn't do anything?

No. I even tried toggling off, rebooting. Toggling on, rebooting....no luck.
Unless someone else has any other ideas, I will probably factory reset to see if that fixes it, which I am sure it will. DP4 is around the corner though, so I may just wait.
Yeah might as well wait for DP4 first at least.

Disable Notch?

Just curious if any of you think they will allow us to black out the status bar next to the notch to make it "go" away. Hopefully this will be an option within the software.

pretty sure someone will make an app for that sooner or later.
Probably but then you have a device with 2013 sized top and bottom bezels.
The design is a total joke, google should be embarrassed to release this monstrosity in 2018

I agree. It's a joke and the design team should in fact all be fired. Whoever approved this version has no idea how to sell phones. This is why they don't.
Having said that, I still bought the XL [emoji53]

That option to hide notch is already available in developer Settings. There are some screenshot on reddit
So you hide the notch which increases the bezel look. What actual screesize do you end up with...
So yeah, they apparently are going to put the option in but instead of leaving the notification icons there they are just shrinking the entire screen:

Just to show how Google's design team has no clue. [emoji2357]

The developer options method has different options for disabling the notch. Apparently one of the settings allows you to do this: https://i.imgur.com/OKnedgo.jpg and https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9mwfoh/via_mkbhd_vid_what_pixel_3_xl_looks_like_with/
So my guess is that once it's officially implemented, it'll look like what you see above

It's already built into P in developer options.
If they made it so you could half hide the notch (like, so the notch is halfway not showing, instead of fully hidden), I think I'd be using that for sure. I think the phone would look WAY better with half that notch. If that's not an option, I really hope some devs will make it so.

The developer option is (hopefully) not the full implementation. The developer option just blacks out the notch.
This is the current implementation using the developer options:

Its more like that the rest of the screen would have "burn in" effect and not the notch. But that shouldnt be noticeable because the display does not show static pictures/elements like the status bar (clock, icons, ...).
Why would you risk a problem with screen burnin anymore than any other phone, just because you've hidden a notch?
The feature in developer settings is most likely not done. Because, no, Google aren't "that clueless". People love to hate on everything they can, while ignoring absolutely everything that Google designs which has a brilliant design. Stop cherry picking the things that you hate, and look at the big picture. Google does know design. When this feature is pushed out of developer settings (which is NOT to be viewed as "made available to public; most people don't even know this exists. XDA and Reddit are absolutely not the norm), I would expect the clock and icons to be on top of the hidden notch, not below it.

** SOLVED ** PIXEL 2 XL Apps and AR Stickers Not Working

Got the latest update 1st December 2018
AR Stickers work but cant record when active
Can take pictures but thats it?
Followed a few tuts on YT but ppl are using menu sliding from left my texts are at bottom
ie. Camera Video More
When choosing more it shows Playground
For me to access the Stickers
Also most of my apps when clicking them on home screen or appd drawer go to
Google Play and gives option to uninstall or Open ???
Why doing this and not opening straight away?
They've rebranded stickers to Playground. It's an add-on to the camera so that's why it's not listed in the app drawer.

But apk you gave same version as mine and tried that still wont record video

And you're DEFINITELY holding the shutter button correct? See how it's red in my screenshot.

Just got the phone (new)
Have seen other forums and ppl having same issues
Not sure if its software updates rolling out in different places or not
All I know is once I switched my phone on
I had 2 software updates to do
Didn't have AR Stickers
Had to download AR Core then I had to get playground
What I am running
Running the same build.

I am confused then
Have you or do you need any options enabled to use this feature (first pixel user)
So this is new to me with AR Stuff

Didn't have to enable anything. I noticed the video button was missing compared to the previous app so I figured long pressing did recording. Have you tried clearing app data? How about make sure all app permissions are on? If that makes a difference.

Yeah tried that
Have gave feedback on app as well as google feedback on the issue
As it seems to be a problem with some users
Might not matter at all because I don't see a possible connection but try changing to the pill home button (gesture navigation). That's the only thing I can see visually different from mine.

*** SOLVED **
Issue is in Developer Options
Issue is in Developer Options
Animation Duration Scale, adjust that solved the issue
Can now record as it wasn't turned up enough
Cheers guys
Nice you figured it out. What setting did you have it on that didn't work?

When you access Developer Options in Settings (advanced)
Scroll Down to Drawing
Then turn Animator Duration Scale up as I had mine Off
This Solved the issue
