Do i need to format data from twrp before flashing magisk in miui ? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

I'm on 9.5.13 stable and i'm waiting for unlocking my bootloader, i heared that miui by default encrypt the phone, and after flashing magisk to get root, it will not boot unless i do format data from twrp to decrypt it, it that true or i'm missing something ?
I'm just want to get root on current build 9.5.13 to get some mods and enable camera2api without loosing all stock camera features.
Thanks in advance

Not true!
What your confusing things with, is when you flash TWRP, you need to flash lazyflasher to allow the device to boot. Or use a TWRP that includes a script to do so.
You can run the device encrypted if you want, but formatting data will let it run decrypted if magisk is flashed before booting rom.
Unlocking your bootloader will wipe data, so backup beforehand!

I am new to Custom ROM installer. I had unlocked refmi note 5 pro using miui tool and flashed twrp recovery. But I could nt flash lazyflasher through twrp.
Now my mobile works fine in miui 10 . But I couldn't root it. I need to flash resurrection remix ROM .
Please help me

@sathishob you don't need root to flash a custom rom. Check the rom thread you want to flash for instructions and further assistance.

@corkiejpThank you for the support corkiejp... Successfully i flashed a custom ROM (Resurrection remix 7 ) but I couldn't use the banking apps and camera doesn't open . I tried to solve it without root. But I couldn't . So I installed magisik now everything works fine . ( I couldn't install magisik easily. It took several times to success. Most probably it says error 1 . Installed magisik uninstall then every thing went smoothly.)
Installing Aosp extended ROM I fixed camera issue and by flashing magisik banking apps are working
Thanks a lot for your valuable reply...

Hello guys
I had unlocked my whyred and flashed twrp recovery by fastboot. First time it went smoothly . after reboot phone went to stock mi recovery . I searched and found that to resolve this i have to install lazyflasher zip file . so i tried to flash that file through twrp. I could nt flash that file because it showed some error message . some how i tried two or more times to flash it with some other lazyflasher files . It did nothing . Then i installed twrp image file from twrp recovery suddenly issue was solved . properly phone booted on twrp recovery .
Then i tried to flash magisik but i couldnt flash it because it says error 1 as a reason . I tried some more ways to flash it but i can't find any solution . from the help of corkiejp i flashed the resurrection remix 7 successfully without flashing magisik. But my camera was not worked and banking apps are not worked .
So i flashed the aosp extended pie rom and the camera worked fine . but i could nt use banking apps. I searched for a way and landed on flashing magisik manager . again the error 1 prevented me to flash magisik . I flashed magisik uninstall zip and everything went smoothly.
Now my phone was properly rooted and working fine.
But my question is if until now i could nt flash lazy flashers prooerlybon my phone . is this make any harm to my phone ? Please help me
Thanks in advance ...

Rooting went fine Flashing rom almost bricked me due to directions??

I instslled magisk apk and then booted twrp .img in fastboot as directed and flashed magisk zip from twrp as said too . I Rebooted and was rooted fine . Downloaded Resurrection rom and the guide said to only wipe in twrp flash rom then flash twrp zip again and reboot/profit . The rom splash screen just sat there spitting out little purple pink splatters and never booted so I rebooted into twrp and flashed the twrp zip to make twrp permanent and ended up losing my stock backup from the boot.img twrp and my internal storage . Had taken all night to find the right tool kit to flash firmware back .
What went wrong ? How do you flash rom on this phone I'm no noob but I'm not risking it again .
After you boot twrp and flash magisk are you supposed to flash twrp.zip then make your backups and flash roms? I wasn't sure if it was a long bootup or not gonna boot ever

I see a couple possible problems with your steps. The biggest is not being prepared. Not a shot at you but a fact that comes with a new device. The easiest route at this point would be to list out what exactly you want to have as a finished project. I'm assuming rooted RR with installed TWRP? I ask because if you want to have TWRP installed you should also use a condom kernel that has the touch drivers. I'm not sure if RR had them by default it not. Anyway, confirm what you want and I'm sure one of us will get you pointed in the right direction. You won't find most of us using a tool kit, so you will learn the "right" way... Lol

What?
I never flashed a custom ROM on this device, but it should be fairly easy. Turn off security settings on stock ROM, flash permanent twrp. Wipe system, dalvik/ cache and data and install RR. Boot and wait a few minutes, it sometimes takes some time. I don't know how the gapps situation is, so you might need to flash gapps. Also make sure to make a backup since you will wipe all data. Should be fairly easy of you followed the steps correctly

What I' did to flash the rom was separate from rooting procedures . The phone been unlocked for months.
I did both separate times
I fastboot booted twrp.img then I installed magisk zip. I did not permanent flash twrp zip after . I only flashed the perm twrp zip after I wiped and flsahed the RR Rom . So another words I was on twrp temp boot only when I flashed the rom then I flashed twrp zip per the rom Dev instructions . But I can't make sense why you have to flash twrp after you flash a rom install .
I'm assuming it goes like this
Install latest magisk apk.
Fastboot boot twrp .img
Then perm flash twrp .zip
Then flash magisk .zip
Reboot into the O.S and check for root
Reboot into (permanent Twrp) swipe to allow modifications .
wipe stock rom with the swipe only method??
Install Rom of choice and reboot !
Or is it install Rom /flash twrp.zip for a second time then reboot

I want to flash a rom but I'm not understanding how the pixel 2 xl works with twrp vs other devices .
If I reboot without first flashing a kernel then maybe that's the dilemma?
I just don't get why you need to flash permanent twrp .zip after you install Rom If you already had twrp permanent installed to begin with .
I' went over what I did in this thread and what I'm guessing I did wrong. So do I need special kernel for each and every rom listed . I never had to flash a kernel to get a rom to boot on any device and I've been flashing for years with T-Mobile phones on Galaxy devices and unlocked Google based phones.

I don't get why you would need to flash magisk before.
0. Make Backups and turn off security settings. Also make sure you're on the newest OTA
1. Boot into TWRP
2. Do a factory reset in Wipe settings.
3. Flash ROM
4. Flash TWRP of you want, not required but recommended
5. Reboot and set it up
6. Install magisk Manager and reboot to TWRP
7. Flash magisk and reboot
That's it.

Hey let me ask you something, I just got the Pixel 2 XL but I always do a lot of research. Something I wasn't prepared for is the touch issue in TWRP. It works fine when initially installed, works fine sometimes after a reboot, but always ends up not working because touch isnt working. You're saying I can install a custom kernel and that should be fixed? I've always rocked Elemental or Franco's but am on rooted stock and since I've never stayed stock before I'm not even sure if I can flash another kernel without changing ROMs. If I can, or even if I have to change ROMs, you're saying that most custom kernels have the touch in TWRP working?

All the custom kernels fix the twrp touch issue. You can flash them anytime you want on stock rom via twrp. Just disable screen lock(just initially for safety) boot into twrp, flash your kernel then magisk, reboot and done

How to update OTA updated on rooted Phone

My phone is rooted with magisk and i have twrp recovery..
I am getting latest miui OTA update i want to update my phone but I don't wanna lose my all data is there any way to update miui without losing data on rooted phone ....
What i have?
1. Rooted
2.TWRP RECOVERY
What i don't want to lose?
1. My current Data
2. Magisk root...
Thanks...
Create backup, flash FULL OTA (not incremental) and flash magisk, wipe caches (recommended) and reboot.
If you'd like OTA support you can switch to supporting recovery like redwolf. Read the forums.
If i do what you have mentioned above , so there is no issue of a data loss ?? Or i have to use another recovery?
Hi,
firstly I am sorry for reviving an old thread, but I could not find any answer to this question. Also I am a new member and this is my first post (sorry, if I make any mistakes).
So how do I update my MIUI in the correct way and easily without any dataloss? A step-by-step guide would be very nice.
I have MIUI Global 10.3.2.0 Stable and want to update to MIUI Global 11.0.3.0 Stable.
"Normally" (before my device was rooted) I would directly update via system-update, but I am kind of scared since my phone is rooted now. It is the first time I have rooted my device, so I am new to this topic. I have used Redwolf to root my RN5P, but without flashing it as my recovery (just "fastboot boot redwolf.img", the normal TWRP did not work, since it always asked for password), also I have Magisk 20.1 (Stable) and cam2api installed.
Hope someone can help me. Thanks ahead.

Yes you lost magisk root... Just flash after, like as you did before
I am waiting since two weeks. Please someone answer/help me. Thanks.
- Get the recovery ROM from https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/how-to/received-9-5-17-ota-update-t3813192
- fastboot into custom recovery, if not already permanently installed
- flash the ROM
- re-install Magisk through recovery
- re-install camera2api
Other possibility, since you have only rooted your device, but haven't installed any custom recovery
- use the builtin update from MIUI
- fastboot any custom recovery
- re-install Magisk
- re-install camera2api
Neither way any data will be lost, nor will any app be de-installed

Thank you for your reply. But in both ways I have to install custom recovery. That is not what I want (else I would have done it earlier in the frist place when I have rooted my phone). I want to keep the original MIUI recovery and "everything original/stock as possible" (that's the reason I stick to MIUI and do not use any custom rom).

Read it properly.. In the second method its written that we should fastboot any recovery not flash(install) it.. I hope your problem is solved now:good:
My question is i have orange fox recovery installed. How do I install ota ? Is just flashing the full rom zip enough? I want to preserve data.
@Mura1 you should only fastboot into any custom recovery. This you must have done in the past to root your device. It's the same way.
@Anymeofyou yes this should work. It's the same way I upgrade the device. Afterwards I flash the custom recovery and magisk as well, but that may be only a precausion. In the past I had to fastboot TWRP and flash TWRP once again within TWRP to have it installed. OrangeFox should keep the custom cevoery after an update, but since its only a few seconds to flash OF once again, it doesn't hurt me.
Till now no loss of data recognized.
Ah, thank you @Anymeofyou, know I got it and big thanks to @Tischbein in the first place . Sorry, for having to reading it multiple times (my bad).
I have updated now successfully. Have a nice day.

Unable to encrypt after root

Hi everyone.
I had a issue and i really want help
I had unlock the OEM,and after installing the twrp and format data (to remove the forced encrypt), i had flash the Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt zip file.
Okay, after that i have restarted the device and configure as my away to use, after that, booted on recovery again and flashed the magisk.
But i wanna encrypt my device, and when i go to configs->security and encrypt area, says that my device its not encrypted. Okay, i followed the steps and when i gonna try to encrypt the device, the process start and... some seconds after, the phone just restart and nothing has done.
The onlys changes that i have made on system is: root and flashed a splash.img(without that stupid warning of unlocked bootloader)
I really want to encrypt my device, so, if i get stolen, the thief wont get my user data.
Can anyone help me?
Flash the stock rom and and don't flash the encryption disabler next time. You don't need to install TWRP to flash Magisk either, you can just boot it and then flash Magisk. Also you don't even need TWRP, you can just follow the guide in the forum to install Magisk by booting the magisk patched boot.img for your version of the stock ROM and then install Magisk manually via Magisk Manager.
TL;DR : Flash stock ROM and do the same things except flashing dm-verity-disabler, you don't need that for Magisk or TWRP.

Sir, i really need twrp now, its there any way i can enable encrypt after rooting the device? (to sure that, if gets stolen, the data need to be wipped out or the password must be given on twrp)
Same issue, i tried to encrypt on security menu, reboot and nothing was done.

Better, without TWRP, i can flash other zips via magisk/stock recovery?

I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, do you want to have TWRP + stock encryption?
If so you can just boot TWRP and flash the TWRP installer package (.zip) inside TWRP to do that. And you don't need to change anything, currently I have TWRP installed and encryption enabled on my Stock ROM.
But if you're trying to get TWRP's own encryption, sadly that doesn't work.
You can also use TWRP without flashing/installing it, just go to the directory TWRP is stored in, open a command line, connect your phone and boot it with this command :
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
then flash whatever you'd like.
DO NOT lock your bootloader after you flash something on TWRP, this will most probably brick the device.

I want to stick with the stock rom rooted, with the twrp installed and the user data encrypted
So i can flash things through TWRP even i have encrypt enabled?

dont worry about bootloader, i will keep unlocked
It's perfectly fine to have TWRP and/or Magisk and encryption using stock ROM.
Flash stock ROM (erase user data)
Install TWRP
install Magisk
Don't flash the encryption Disabler. As its name implies, it disables the automatic encryption of the userdata partition.

Phone always boots into recovery after tying to install TWRP - Please help

Hi there,
I tried to install TWRP as described in this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/development/official-twrp-daisy-t3855396
However now that its finished it wont boot anymore in my normal system, instead always trwp shows up :/
Before I had installed stock rom and was rooted
I installed TWRP with version twrp-installer-daisy-3.2.3-0
Any advice how I fix that (without loosing data) ?
Im very thankful for any hint.

Encyption unsuccessful

I have a big problem with the phone, when I tried to change the system to lineageos from stock (oxygenos), I got an error. So I tried to install oxygenos from the zip archive I downloaded from the oneplus forum. The installation was successful but the phone looped over. Before the changes, I did a full system backup, but the twrp was replaced with stock recovery and I can not install twrp from the fastboot level. When I want to start the phone, I only have the ENCYPTION UNSUCCESSFUL message.

You might have to clear the internal storage , not sure though .
You might try flashing the twrp from bootloader. And clear internal storage and flash OOS again from scratch
however i would prefer to keep the phone content i have many important files there. I tried to install twrp but after restarting I still have stock recovery. I tried some applications listed on the forum but to no avail.

Why don't you try Msm tool or unbrick tool .
But those to wipe the phone though.
When you change from encryption device to decryption device , you have to clean flash .
So I suspect this might be an encryption issue, so might clean storage .
Don't know . Wait for someone else for an input .
So there is no way to save the data? I remind you that I have a system backup on my phone.

I think you need to flash the no Verity zip after you flash twrp to stop the stock recovery from reinstating itself after you reboot. Then you should be able to just boot into twrp and restore your backup.
