replacement motherboard for G4 came with 'hacked' ROM - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Just something that worries me a lot atm and wanted to ask/alert people about. Probably 'a thing' that everybody knows about (?) in which case .. .well.. carry on, nothing to see here
I ordered a replacement motherboard for my LG G4 (H815) on ebay and the board I got does not seem to have come with the Stock ROM on it although it does appear at first to be stock.
When going through the pre-installed Apps I noticed that there was something odd though : it comes pre-installed with SuperSU (which starts automatically at boot). Even worse : I can't remove that SuperSU either, only Disable it.
When I tried to Unlock the bootloader at LG's website and replace the ROM (something I had done before so I know the procedure) I was told that the IMEI and DeviceID do not match. Replacing the ROM seems to not be an option even though it probably was rooted before to install the current ROM. I haven't tried to flash it with LG Flash yet ... so maybe that'll be the way out.
The more I started thinking about it the more nefarious this seems to me : a replacement motherboard with a locked bootloader that can't be unlocked (the ROM on it is Android 5.1 btw, not 6) which starts a SuperSU service at boot that most people probably wouldn't even notice and which has access to :
- Google Play billing service
- Retrieve running apps
- Run at Startup
- Prevent Phone from sleeping
That service could turn that phone into a zombi and considering that more smartphones than this one are probably in the same state things could get ugly.
What's worse, although I did disable it, there really is no way of really knowing that the smartphone is indeed 'safe'. I'm surely not going to use it for Home Banking atm! But even email or adding a Google account , or using facebook, etc already are things you probably shouldnt do when somebody else may have root on your smartphone..
kind regards,
Benny

Wow that's unfortunate
Maybe try @steadfasterX's SALT utility and see what info it gives you. Also, I assume the IMEI is from the software and not the back of your phone (e.g. the one from your previous motherboard)

hi, Thanks, I'll have a look at Salt Utility. Got the IMEI from the OS, not the sticker. It's actually not just the mobo that I replaced. This G4 is 'lego-ed" togheter from parts sourced all over the place so do not have the original housing I have a second, unlocked G4. This one was supposed to be my backup. Maybe the unlock simply fails because somebody else already unlocked it before - not sure if they could relock it afterwards , maybe they used Salt and didn't unlock...
Thanks for the response.
Edit : Come think of it, maybe the Device ID is not only dependant on the Motherboard but calculated from information gathered from other parts in the system as well like the screen , cameras, sim card reader ... who knows :-/ Might not be able to unlock any LG when any of those unknown parts is replaced.

. As long as you talk about the device ID displayed in fastboot it is coming from your mainboard and can't be changed. if you talk about the Android device ID it's generated by the ROM and that one can be changed easily

Good to know.
The Device ID came from fastboot in this case.

I'd be interested to know whether the IMEI and device model from SALT match the values displayed in the OS

Debranded Desire won't connect to mobile operator

I bought a HTC Desire branded to Orange UK trough eBay when i was working there last month. The First thing i did was to debrand it using the 1.15.405.2 that i found on MoDaCa, and i bought a unlock key on eBay. This solution worked pretty well until the OTA update showed up, the i got the known WiFi issue. That was no biggie either, just installed the RUU of the 1.21.405.2 and the new Radio, and everything seemed to be perfect again
BUT THEN, two days ago, my phone suddenly lost it's connection to the my mobile operator . I tried to swap my sim card with another sim card, and the result was that my HTC Desire wouldn't get connection while my sim card worked well in the other phone. I also browsed trough my menus to try to find something that might be wrong, but no luck. If i tried to connect to my mobile operator manually, i got a message saying something like "SIM-card doesn't allow connection to this network".
Yesterday morning, i called HTC to try to find out if this might be a hw or sw malfunction, and he advertised me to do a factory settings restore and felt pretty confident that it only was the sw letting me down. I did as he suggested and boom, it worked...for about 5-6 hours, then it came back. As if that wasn't annoying enough, a factory settings restore didn't do the trick this time, and neither did a reflash with the goldcard. I even formated my mSD to be sure there wasn't any kind of virus on it.
So please, if anyone in here got a tip regarding sw, let me know. I'm helpless without my dear phone...
Hmmm this is my biggest concern... I'm just about to buy an ebay Orange Desire and flash it with a stock ROM and unlock it.... kinda worrying as I'm no Linux man really...
im not sure if its the same thing but i have lost conection to t mobile on my desire twice now. first time was fixed by re entering the apn. this time no change. the differance is mine is un branded. i also cant do mms any more.
Unbranded and debranded, same ****, isn't it? Niter means branded...
Seems like i'm not the only one with this problem: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/5...nt-re-connect/page__view__findpost__p__405655
Lots of Vodafone users in that forum has similar issues, but most of them seems to have a workaround by turn off the back on, or go by airplane mode to get signal back, tat doesn't work for me. I tried to flash my phone once more, but still no luck.
I'm considering a root operation and install android 2.2 aka froyo, but i'm not even sure if that is possible since i got the bootloader version 0.80...
ive just got mine working again by resting the apns to default.
mms still not working though. i hope its not a voda problem i just paid off t mobile a years contract to join voda due to terrible reception and crap tech support.
what is that, and how do you do it? I would guess that a reset to factory default and/or a complete reflash would take care of such, whatever it is...
Yep I was about to ask the same thing! what is it and how do you turn it on/off?
go to settings - wirless & networks - mobile networks - access point names - then press the menu key and hit reset to default.
hope this helps you
That did the same thing as a "reset to factory defaults", but still doesn't work
I've an unbranded unlocked desire on 3 UK with original firmware and mine does drop out occasionally but always comes back perhaps its a desire quirk !

Suppose so, but unlike you and many others, mine doesn't come back I was hoping for a fix for this issue, but i'm afraid were talking about hw malfunction, let's hope i'm wrong...
Little update, just followed this guide, but that didn't change anything. As far as i know, i now got some kind of rooted version of HBOOT 0.75 and fw.ver. 1.15.405.4, dunno about radio version. But it also says that i'm not able to install a custom rom with this rooted version, but i might be able to completely root it now and then install a custom rom?
Yet another update, i did install the 2.2 Froyo following this guide, and unlike the HTC roms, this one indicates that i do have full/optimal connection to my mobile operator, but it still won't let me call, just replies with 'Mobile network not available'.
I kinda courages me to scream out loud ****!!! Yes, i mean it...
Feedback would be nice
Just a thought, may i be that the guy i bought the phone from could have reported it as stolen with the intention of getting an insurance fee? And as a result of that, my phone have been closed by the operator? Don't even know if they mind doing such across the border. So the question would be: Is there any way to find out if my phone has been remotely closed?
Call your carrier.... they will be able to tell you if the phone is connecting to the nextwork correctly... ask them if not... why not?
I second that suggestion, try calling your carrier. Also I have found that switching the internet on directly through settings rather than using the widgets solved my connection problem.

Yep, i got contact with the seller from eBay, and he is very helpful, so he will do what he can while i will call my carrier first thing in the morning. Seems like there might be a glitch here, but i'll keep you updated on my progress.
argh, it seems like i wont get anywhere with my phone. I'm considering trying to change the IMEI, i know it's illegal, but i paid £360 for this device, and atm it's useless to me. If i only knew how tho change the imei, not exactly easy information to obtain, not even with google...

So have you found out why your having problems?
ah, sorry, thought i already told u guys, lol. Well, for some reason the phone is IMEI locked. The seller says that he did call to lock a sim card when he lost his iphone, and it might be related since it's the sim that was suppose to be in my phone. however, i think he either claimed the phone stolen to commit insurance fraud, or it's simply stolen. Another thing i came across was that the operator might blacklist the phone if it's unlocked without their blessing, don't really know if they can do that.
Either way, the only way for me to make this phone work is to convince the police that it's not stolen (i need a recite for that which he won't provide me), or to change the imei code with my "awesome" hacking skills...

[Q] Disconnected because service is unavailable

Hoping someone can provide some direction. First and foremost I am not a HTC savvy so although there are a few threads here about the same issue none of them relate to me as I have not rooted the phone nor flashed to custom ROMs or anything to that nature. I am simple user of the phone... Now.. to the topic.. so I bought this phone for my brother in law last year as a birthday present, and at the time I had a working phone so I didnt put my mind too much to it.. but I did liked the phone very much. Two months ago, I decided to purchase one of these, so I bougtht an HTC ONE X Phone S720e Android 32GB 8MP 3G WiFi GPS Bluetooth Unlocked White. I don´t recall what versión of Android it carried at the time but looking at the specs it should had come with Android 4.0.3. After loading it up, transfering my files on to it and loading some basic apps, whatsapp, email, Skype... it off coursed asked for a software update two times which I went ahead and did. The last one it installed added Android 4.2.2 and HTC Sense 5. It was working fine, layout changed considerably... now after doing another of the updates to applications and software, specifically the transfer files update it suddenly quit recognizing data services completely. I though it might be something with the micro sim, so I tried testing a couple of others, it didnt make a difference so I decided to back up my contacts and information I had on the phone and did a Factory reset. It wipped it clean but issue remains the sames, it is unable to even recognize the sim card is missing and when I go into settings I see the message Disconnected because service is unavailable.
Reading online, saw a few folks stating that this situation was related to software updates.. so I was wondering if I could get some help on how to get this fixed. Not sure what to do, downgrade to 4.0.3 or how could I get it resolved so appreciate some direction here.
If you go to settings - about - phone identity, does it still shows the imei ? Seen many people here having their imei gone from their phone and becomes an iPod since we can't write it back. Tho you are on stock, so better send it for repair.

It shows up as unknown actually... is this a software related issue then? Im concerned about the other phone going through the same situation... should no updates be installed to it then? That makes it fairly useless and might prefer to send it back and try to get a refund instead.

[Q] LG G3 McaFee issues big time

Hi everyone
This is my first post here and a sad one at present.
i restored my G3 back to stock last night and all seemed to go well but now my phone says McaFee mobile security your device is locked and is asking for a pin to unlock it.
i don't have this pin and i don't have a clue how to get it, i purchased the phone as a used mobile and it was all good until i did the root back to stock because lollipop was causing some serious lag issues.
can anyone please help me with a way around this if possible
big thanks in advance
Contact the person who sold you the phone. He entered the PIN. McAfee thinks the phone is stolen now.
You can try flashing stock firmware (kdz) file with CSE flash. It could help

Thanks for the reply
I contacted the seller and it seems the phone is infact 3rd hand if not more and basically he does not have the pin
i did the firmware flash and thats why I'm in the pickle now as the phone knows its been factory reset and MacaFee kicks in for security, the sellers not interested as he sold me the phone working which it was but lollipop was just killing the phone when i updated it and after trying to get back to kitkat I'm in brick land
If anyone else has a suggestion or can help then please do get in touch if possible
Thank you
In fact the previous owner set up an account here: McAffee Mobile Security.
Contact someone there and explain your situation.
I will contact McAfee for sure and see if they can help me but I do believe the answer I will receive will be can't help and I come to this conclusion through general security measure because I'm pretty sure anyone could steel a phone and call them up asking for the unlock code but let's see what they say.
If anyone has had this happen and have found a way around the issue please do send me a private message if you don't wish to publish it as I am stuck big time at present
Cheers
I have just got off the phone with McAfee customer support here in the UK and well to be blunt I'm up that creek without a paddle
Nothing they can do for me because even though the software licence is valid and I have the original owners email address that confirms this because I don't have a prof of purchase for the phone like a receipt or mobile number for the original owner they can not help me I'm anyway
All they said I can do is to keep emailing the owner with this email address and hope for a reply and if I get one enter the pin and it will unlock
So people be very careful if you don't have the pin for your phone as it looks like I have just lost £240 and now have a brick to look at
Again if any of you wonderfully cleaver people know of a fix please do help me out if possible
Thanks
Joe

have you tried any diff roms or cyanogen mod? maybe a diff software wont have the mcafee on like cyanogen mod
No I haven't tried to put any other software on because I can no longer access download mode as the McAfee has a kill switch and won't let me do anything from what I can see.
All I can do it switch on my device I can't even get into setting properly because the McAfee block kicks in to quickly and I've tried probably 20 odd times
If anyone can explain a way for me to flash another operating system onto my handset please get in touch as I will try anything rather than have a dead phone and e out of pocket
Cheers

If i can not get around this fix i will defo take it to a shop as you mentioned and try my luck.
but i have some news
i have managed to get into the phone and it allows me to gain access without lock down but no sim installed yet.
i followed the steps from an earlier thread on how to get to buddy lock code and gain access to Macafee software but i do not see or can not figure out how to enter a buddy number as suggested in the last part of the solution
anyone know how to enter a buddy number please
cheers
Bump up just for those who might have missed this thread
Anyone know how I add buddy number please
Cheers
open the apk. on top , on the right there are like three dots. settings, scroll down to find device-buddy list.
under settings you can also see subscription info. there you can find the email of the person who set up the apk.

SM-N975X??

A friend of mine gived to me a SM-N975X Note 10+ model. It looks like a demo unit model unable to read a sim and call.
I'd like flash a stock rom with Odin but I can't find a "SM-N975X" rom. Only "Combination file" that I dont know wath it is.
Some hints?
Thx a lot
Looks like that's a demo unit and nothing more then just a demo unit.
Searching the forum found the following thread that contains info which will answer your question.

You can unlock it with a password , if it's from a best buy store
I mean to unlock the demo retailer stuff that keeps cycling , and you would be able to use it normally , without the sim.
Step 1
From your Home Screen touch the “Apps” icon – it’s in the bottom-right corner.
Step 2
Scroll through your apps and find “Samsung Retail Mode” app ….. not be confused with the “RetailMode” app. Open up Samsung Retail Mode.
Step 3
Touch “Configuration settings”
Step 4
Enter the password: blue
and touch OK
To consider: maybe this phone wont be able to charge to 100% , it's top is 70%
Let us know if this worked for you !
Zappomax - Are you asking how to disable the store demo mode or how to make it so the phone can use a sim card and access the cell network.
Your original post made it sound like you wanted to use it on the cell network, but in hindsight you may have been asking about something else.

What I'd like to do is using all the usual cell phone features like a stock phone (especially sim calls).
I heard about "combination file" rom but I don't know exactly if it is useful in this case
Unfortunately, no, it will be of no use, the demo units in any case are not capable to do what you want, it is not just a firmware thing, it is a phisical restriction what prevents them from being used as regular phones, no way to circumvent it, that's it, to finish this, that these demo units end in the hands of people is an irregular ocvurence, as all these units are intended to return to Samsung once their life cycle ends, they are nit intended to be sold in any case, so...

Adding a little more info the combination file requires a token in order to be flashed/used. This token is not free and costs a pretty hefty sum (per posts here on the forum).
Without this token (or "authorization for use" if this term fits better) you will not be able to use the firmware.

Nubia 5G refusing pattern lock and company cannot provide support as I am in the USA

I decided to set a new pattern lock for my Redmagic 5G last Saturday night and when I woke up the following morning I can't seem to remember the new pattern (Alcohol was a factor).
I have hard reset the phone but the pattern did not go away. I contacted the company and provided them with pictures, IMEI number and receipt for the phone and they simply said that they cannot provide technical support for me because I am in a country where they have been embargoed by (U.S.A.).

Not sure if you were able to solve your problem...but it seems like there are certain software you can download for windows to help open phones when you have lost or forgotten your pins or patterns. stuff like 4ukey on android. may be worth a shot to look into. I've never personally tried any myself but sounds like you might have to try something in that area to help you out. hope you find something.

Hi,
Thanks. I did try the 4ukey, it does not work. They basically have created a UI that just gives you the hard reset steps that I already knew and had done. It is not some magical trick to rid the phone of FRP LOCK. I honestly think they are a rip off.
