Can't change ringtone from default to any mp3/ogg/wma/wav file... - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

Hi folks,
I'm having my Zenfone 5Z update (ZS620KL) for 2 weeks now, and I just can't find a way to select any other ringtone/notification tone than the default ones....
When entering Sound settings and trying to select a non-standard one (via the "+" (plus) sign in the upper-right corner), I'm always getting the notification, saying "Can't add non-standard ringtone".
This happens regardless of the ringtone format (mp3, ogg, wma, wav)...
I have tried to copy my ringtones and notification sounds into the following paths:
INTERNAL STORAGE\storage\emulated\0\media\audio\ringtones
INTERNAL STORAGE\storage\emulated\0\media\audio\notifications
OR
INTERNAL STORAGE\storage\emulated\0\Ringtones
INTERNAL STORAGE\storage\emulated\0\Notifications
Nothing is working The files are being seen by the system sound picker, but when choosing particular file, it is just notifying as mentioned above.
Can you guys confirm, that you have the same issue? Does anyone know any solution for this? This is so annoying....
Today, a new FOTA was installed on my device (WW_90.11.37.95_20180727), but nothing changed - still the same issue.
Thanks in advance for any help.
updated model - thanks drpmch. I have Zenfone 5z ZS620KL

Hi Wan932
Thanks for the answer.
When I'm choosing either: built in file manager OR TOTAL CMD manager OR ES file explorer OR any other file manager, it is constantly providing me the "Can't add non-standard ringtone" notification...
I thought, that maybe I need to place those somewhere....
If my phone would be rooted, I guess, it would fall into root\system\media\ringtones.... But mine is not rooted.
Any other suggestion please?

Use the built-in file manager
Hi I've been using this for a week now, so the first thing was to change the ringtone. I simply used the accompanied file manager to change it.
Step 1
Open the file manager and browse to your music file.
Step 2
Long press on the file, then press the three dot menu on the top right corner. A new fly out menu appear. Choose set system sound
Step 3
Replace the sound you want to change

Hey apad,
This worked..... but:
- it only replaces the default SIM1 ringtone AND default system sound
- still, can't change it for SIM2 or different sound for SMS, email, calendar event or apply custom ringtone for a specific contact (which I'm after the most)....
Any other ideas please?

Adding a new ringtone

I just received my new 32GB sdcard, yippeeee!
So I created a folder on the sdcard, so the path is now :
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones and I have a file called SYNTH.MP3
When I goto :
Settings / Personalize / Default Ringtone - I can't see a ringtone named SYNTH.
Am i doing something wrong ? I found several guides online which tell me exactly the above. I even rebooted the phone to see if that would somehow re-read the phone.
2 minutes later i went back into the same path of settings I can now see the new ringtone. strange but it works, that's the main thing.
Settings > sound and display > phone ringtone
I guess the media sync have updated the library in the meantime :/

Custom Ringtones setting ???

guys, i have few MP3 & few OGG files which i was using them as ringtones on my previous phone.
in SGS2, i dont know how i can set custom ringtones.... i saw some OGG files in system/media/audio/ringtone folder through root explorer.
i tried copying OGG files into that folder, it allowed me. but when i went to settings/sounds/ringtone.... there it doesnt show up the newly added file...
what should i do ? is it possible to use custom ringtone on SGS2 ? if yes, how & in what format the SGS2 recognises music files....
pls let me know.... i am waiting
Hmmm think the fastest way on a clean phone would be to just play the song in the media player and then "menu > set as > phone ringtone"
Think you can also set then using kies.
Mind you I've only used mp3's so not sure if this also goes for OGG files.
hope it's somewhat usefull
Copy Ringtones to folder System/Media/ringtones . I use super manager .
Format .ogg .
Exit reboot phone .
Go to setting sounds phone ringtone scroll down and then back up for ringtone select new ringtone .
Tested working 1100 21/05/11

You can actually put them in any partition, even on the memory card, you don't have to root so long as you put them in the correct folder:
Ringtones
/media/audio/ringtones/
Alarms
/media/audio/alarms/
Notifications
/media/audio/notifications/
I believe that any audio format that the phone can support may be used
thanks guys, i played the file & in the options i set it as ringtone. that played the trick. after choosing that mp3/ogg file as default ringtone, it showed up in sound/phone ringtone setting.... till then it was not so...
thanks for you help...
it would have been better to search for list of music files from default ringtone settings....i wish.... its okay....

You don't even need the media/audio/ folders.
My sd card just has the last folder name, and any files in there show up in the relevant selection menus.

[Q] how to add a new sound for the notification and SMS

I tried to add some new sounds for notification but I failed the ROM RCMiX v2.2 no with "root explorer" as I've worked at some other ROMs. Does not allow me to system> media> audio> notificaton any necessary audio.
whether there is any other way to set your own tone for SMS as the primary?
Hi there
You can try to create "media\audio\notifications" folder structure on your sd card, and put your notifications there.
It might also be useful to use "SDrescan" app to rescan your sd card for new media files.
Later you should be able to find your sounds in notification select dialog...
Worked for me on CM7.1
I managed to "Root explorer" sound copied to the system / audio / notifikation so I took the market application called "mount / system (rw / ro)" new tone but does not appear in the list to select a message tone. I will try to reboot it might appear?
thanks for the advice I hope that at least some of this work.
Did the rebooting help?
Try to follow my previous post this should be a simple and working solution.

Install any file explorer and save the custom ringtone in your sd card. Then goto changing your ringtone option, and there, you should be prompted to use File Manager or Android System, choose File Manager, browse to your custom ringtone and choose it. Done.

How to add ringtone?

Hi,
How to add a custom ringtone/ sound (mp3/ ogg format) to "Default notification ringtone" & "New mail" ringtones section under "Settings -> Sound & notification" of the Zenfone 2.
I can see my custom added ringtone under "Phone ringtone" but unfortunately its not in the "Default notification ringtone" & "New mail" ringtones section.

Go to "file manager " -> media (folder) -> audio (folder) -> ringtone(folder). Inside this folder paste your mp3 files you want as ringtones. Come out off the app and then go to settings, sounds & notifications, select ringtone, there you should see your mp3 file added along with the built-in list. If not there, better do a restart you device. Delete the files if you do not want in the list. I don't know the maximum no. Of files that could be added.
Its simple just put the required ringtones in the "ringtones" folder of the internal storage and notification sounds in "notifications" folder of the internal storage and by internal storage i mean phone storage not external sd card
Can't paste mp3 files.

I'm a newbie. I created mp3 ringtones and transferred them to the phone. I cut files and could not paste them in ringtones folder. What do I need to do? Do I need to root the phone? Please be detailed in your description since I am still learning how to do this.
Dear Clifbandit,
Connect your tab to any windows xp / 7 /8 pc or laptop. If any pop up comes in your tab, like MTP etc, select MTPwhich says Media Transfer Protocol. In your computer, open my computer, there you should see your tab as a new drive or folder or as a media player icon. Open it, create folder inside the "Internal Memory ' as in previous post, paste. Then disconnect simply, rest is as above any posts.
And finally, I like very much your name.

It worked!
For some reason I was having problems earlier. I rebooted the phone and this time I was able to copy and paste just as you advised. Now my phone is rockin' out with Slash playing when it rings! Thanks so much for your help.

nope, that folder isnt even in my zenfone2
incase anyone was wondering why they cant also change there message tone using the same method
create notifications folder inside internal storage>media
then you can change your text and email tones the same way you can with your custom ringtones. [settings>sound and notifications] dont ask me why this folder wasnt included standard. its real half assed phone in many ways
