Switching from ATT to TMobile, questions inside - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello, I'm currently using a Galaxy s9+ on ATT and plan on switching to Tmobile this week. Besides unlocking the phone do I have to do anything else for the phone to take advantage of TMobile? Do I have to flash TMobile firmware or anything like that in order for the phone to work properly and if so how, I've been out of the flashing game for a LONG time .

No you don't have to flash t mobile rom as I know when you put a new sim the phone reboots and sets the phone up for that carrier that's what it does on my s9 but mine the unlocked one so I got wifi calling with t mobile sim card in my phone

T mobile
The screen shots should show up

same boat but need to flash TMB image
okay hear's the deal, i am in the same boat moved to T-Mobile few days back and i have a Vzw branded S9+. i was of the opinion that things would workout great, but my area has poor t-Mobile network and i have been unsuccessfully attempted to flash TMB firmware on this phone. I have tried just about all combinations, and every-time the flash is done it boots back as a brand new Vzw phone and looks for a Vzw sim. I insert the TMB SIM and things work but not WIFI calling. Any leads?

What odin you use??

1.13.1 patched.

Some more details if that helps..
Paid $24 to Sammobil, went through the flashing process and nothing changed. Did this almost 5 times but seems VZW keeps haunting me. Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded the latest firmware RB8 from Aug 2018 for TMB via sammobile flashed the 4 files AP, BT,CP and CSC. Everything went perfect but when it boots back Damn the same old VZW and the OS says u have a non vzw sim. I even flashed the userdata with the other four and separately but no luck. Do we have any success stories and how we dis this correctly? Using Odin 1.13.3 patched version. Tried to downgrade but that failed.

Use 3.13 I believe

Yes sorry typo error, 3.13.1_3B

Not trying to start a new thread with something similar so I'm just gonna post underneath this one. I have an AT&T S9 that is sim unlocked and all but, for the life of me I can't get it to work on Verizon. I've tried changing the bands in the *#*#3696#*#* menu and all I get is, is data. I tried flashing ARG7 unlocked I believe and it still booted with all the AT&T stuff loaded. The build number now shows ARG7 instead of ARG8. I don't know if there's a specific odin / firmware I need to flash in order to be able to get it right. I've been hunting for hours and flashing and I'm at a loss. Thank you guys in advance.

All the carrier stuff is located in the CSC from the flash.
Side note: from what I've read, Verizon locks down the bands and whatnots that stop TMobile stuff from functioning, like WiFi calling.
I've seen people get it working but not the video calls.

There a thread around here that talks about how to get the TMobile services but WiFi calling is all they could get to work. You have to flash the CSC (home partition) from TMobile is what I've heard. I've also heard, you can put in a TMobile Sim and it'll just work. But, I think that might be limited to "factory unlocked" phones.

Read through all the 16 page thread and found very useful comments from you on usage of V3 detonator and Csc changer. I stand confused over just 2 questions;
1. Do I have to root my s9+ which is from vzw
2. It talks about F and FD variant while I have a u variant running snapdragon.
Show me some light .

Can I flash ROMs intended for other note 4 variants?

I'm asking this question because the current build of CM13 for the N910V is underdeveloped at this time and I was wondering if I could flash CM13 for the SM-N910T or the sprint variant without any modem issues, etc.
Do a nandroid using TWRP and try it out. I've been testing different ROMs myself. I don't care for ASOP. Kind of ugly and useless without stock Samsung Apps. But I have tested MIUI, and a few other stock based ROMs found in the international Note 4 forum.

Just backup your EFS, Modem, and Boot partitions for sure. If you get a successful flash, immediately use TWRP to restore those partitions and you should be golden. Might also have to edit build.prop to avoid Play Store issues.

what roms are available to flash?
Hi there,
I find myself in an unusual(i think?) situation in that I have the verizon Note 4 but i live in Ireland. Now while the phone is sim free for the most part, Data does not work here without a verizon plan obviously and it would have to be a roaming plan so I would'nt even think about purchasing one. So i've been waiting for an opportunity to root my N4, now that there is a method I'm just wondering if I would be able to flash a stock Irl/Uk rom to my phone, or another rom that would allow me to have data and spen features. I would like to find out if this is possible before I attempt to root. My phone is on 5.1.1 and is the BPA1 version. Any help much appreciated, thanks.

Pending you could add the correct APN for whatever carrier you will be using, you should be fine. I purchased 2 of these devices nearly 2 years ago. I'm on Verizon prepaid and my wife has been on T-Mobile every since.
Funny thing is I didn't have to set her APN manually. The phone did it automatically the day I put her SIM in. Now she doesn't get the full potential of LTE speeds and MMS is a bit kwonky, but it works.

Thanks for the reply,
do you mean add the APN settings after i've rooted? I'm intending to flash the vodafone 5.1.1 IRL Stock Rom if it's possible, I already tried adding the APN settings and it does not work(unrooted) due to bootloader being locked and like i said i would need a verizon roaming plan to be able to use data. So if I get root and flash IRL vodafone stock rom, will I still have an unlocked phone or not? I'm not an expert in this but I would assume the phone would then be locked on the vodafone network yes? Or would it remain unlocked to any network? So just to be clear, what i would like to know is 1. will I be able to flash a stock rom from Vodafone Ireland once i'm rooted 2. If I do manage to flash Vodafone stock rom, will the phone still be unlocked or locked to vodafone? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

Unlocked sim and unlocked bootloader are different. The phone is sim unlocked from the factory and can never be sim relocked (for lack of a better term). So to answer #2, the phone will not be locked to vodafone.
For #1, I seriously doubt you could odin a stock vodafone rom to this phone and even if you could I'd highly discourage it. If the file contained a bootloader, it would lock the bootloader and could potentially brick the phone. I would recommend unlocking the bootloader, flashing TWRP recovery, rooting (or flash a rooted rom), and add your APN's. If the stock rom is blocking you from adding APN's there are hacks to get around it once rooted. I used to use an app called APN Manager that you install as a /system app that would let you change APN's as you wish.

Any Touchwiz rom should support the S Pen. I believe the Paul (5.1.1) rom does. There's a Note 5 rom that should support it. Just stay away from CM13 or any AOSP roms and you should have S Pen support.

Not such an unusual situation hello from Ireland also a proud verizon note 4 user myself. Meteor and Emobile for me. Data works fine. Let me know if ya need any help.
I am also curious about this situation. I got an awesome deal for my 910v; brand new unopened for 280usd. Only problem is T-mobile sim doesn't get service, and it seems people have lost T-mobile service after upgrading to 5.0. So now I'm stuck with my aging S3 and this brilliant phone just sits there. Fingers crossed that johnboy sees some good results T.T

How to Make TMB/TMB/TMB from TMB/TMB/XAA

Hi Guilds,
I just flashed T mobile firmware on S8 plus which was originally unlocked version. Found couple of glitches and I hope someone might had this issue before and can give some insight.
* After flashing full T mobile firmware and full reset from recovery I can see TMB/TMB/XAA. I am not sure why? Is there anyway to make
TMB/TMB/TMB ?
* I can not see VoLTE toggle in phone setting anymore . Anyone else?
Thanks in advance.

I just did the same. I can't see the VoLTE toggle anymore, but according to IMS Settings, it is turned on and activated. There's a thread here on how to verify it.
But where are you seeing TMB/TMB/XAA? I know those are the CSCs, but what app are you using to see them?

Look for the right files, use this formula and you'll be able to change CSC Code to your preferred carrier. For your case you'll change it to TMB from XAA which will change it to fully TMB/TMB/TMB.

Read all from the first step, It is more than just flashing CSC file. The link has steps on how to convert to a carrier of your choice, yours is Unlocked which is XAA, if i got you right you're trying to convert it to fully T-Mobile (TMB) so you can have all TMO's features.
It sounds difficult but if you find the right files, then read and understand what to do it is as easy as 1 2 4.
I've tried this and you CAN'T change the last code. It's stored in the efs file, and it only signifies what the original firmware was. It has no effect on features or updates when you change carrier firmware. To change it, you'd have to root the device.

I flashed....using prince's Odin.....
1. XAA (all 4 files)
2. Booted, setup, then took the June 1st update.
3. Get into download mode again
4. Flashed TMO user data to get video calling and flashed TMO CP to get RCS messaging
(You can do it separately or together)
And I ended up with the screenshot attached.
You won't see the option for Volte but it's on by default. You won't be able to turn it off.

Your device was originally the US Unlocked version?
I'm calling BS. I've tried every method for switching carrier and flashing the carrier firmware. You CAN NOT change the last CSC code to TMB. If you started with a US unlocked version, it will always read XAA. Everything I've read states you need root to change the last characters to XAA, as they are stored in the EFS file and cannot be changed.

No. I bought TMO S8+ from my local TMO store. I flash the unlock firmware to remove all the bloat. But I wanted the RCs and I wanted the native video calling. So after nearly two weeks (night and day) a flashing different combinations, I finally got everything to work, I have all T-Mobile features working.

Ok, that explains it. Then yes, your last CSC code will be TMB no matter what you flash. If you switch to VZW, it would read VZW/VZW/TMB. You probably didn't notice it with the unlocked firmware, because the unlocked firmware actually doesn't show any CSC in the About Screen.

You're absolutely right. U Firmware doesn't show it. I just reflashed the XAA firmware. I didn't really care for video calling or RCS. But I do care about better battery management which the XAA does better than the TMO firmware.

I don't understand the question
So on my T-Mobile s8+ it shows TMB/XAA/TMB, how can I get it back to TMB/TMB/TMB?
So I discovered that when I put my metro sim card in my S8+ the CSC turns from TMB/TMB/TMB to TMB/XAA/TMB, how can I get it to stay all T-Mobile, this is what is causing me to not be able to use Wi-Fi calling etc.

How can i remove the international calling +1 from all incoming calls?

I have verizon s8+ on AT&T
Everything works good but for some reason all my incoming calls have +1 in front of it and makes it look like an international call.
I cant call it right back from the call log or send a text message either because it has the number stated as INTL call.
I already went into settings, then removed assisted dialing but I still keep getting this issue
Anyone have an idea how to fix this ?
Also is it possible to install the AT&T firmware on the verizon version without bricking the phone ?
TIA

On the thread you linked I saw/ready many post with issues so I decided to just use odin and Flash the stock AT&T files.
Once everything flashed it booted up fine but the Verizon firmware remained. All Verizon apps etc.
Any other way to get AT&T firmware on this phone ?

XT1922-7 Boost to Retail, is it possible?

Hi,
I have a XT1922-7 Boost version, it has been SIM unlocked by Sprint. Now, I no longer use Sprint.
I want to use the phone with T-Mobile or Verizon but there are a lot of bloatware & Sprint-custom settings which is very annoying . Right now, at least on T-mobile, it won't answer call on 4G/VoLTE, it drop to 3G on every call.
What is the best thing I can do? I suppose I can flash my phone to Retail?
I know my phone is Jeter. I might need to unlock my bootloader, flash TWRP, backup the existing Boost G6Play to a microsd card, but I do not seems to see any guide to go to retail, nor I see any Jeter rom to Retail.
Any advice? Thanks

You can flash RETUS and it'll work. I've done it. Hell, I've even flashed the RETBR Aljeter firmware and that works too. I just can't get data without a gsm sim card. The bootloader and gpt.bin won't flash, but it shouldn't matter anyways. Just skip them.
Edit: RETUS Firmware.

Nice. Retail firmware is for 32 GB device though isn't it? It still ran?
Looks like USC is the only one that got a pie full firmware... Weird

Yep, retail is for 32gb. I just grabbed the USC Pie firmware a little bit ago. I think that I can turn it into a flashable ROM. I'm trying to figure how to work the modems though. USC will be missing bands, so I'm just going to DD the partitions I need for Sprint/Boost/Virgin from the soak test. I think that'll make it work.

It might work.
I can't believe the retail firmware flashed. That's crazy.

I'd really like to know if it works for anyone else because I've never heard of it myself. Another thing that might also be related is, my phone came with a clear silicone case that had some numbers and MAN-S printed on it. I think it stands for manufacturer sample.

Mine definitely didn't come with a clear case. Odd indéed. I ordered mine from virgin Mobiles website.
Maybe you got a review unit?

I'm think that's highly probable. There was an issue where a bunch people got Boost models inside generic white boxes, instead of Virgin in proper packaging.

I flashed the US Cellular pie update on my 1922-7 (which I had on Sprint and after my time with them was up they unlocked the SIM slot). It works no problem.
I used it with t-mobile for a week and everything seemed to work fine with it. It also works fine on ATT as well.
Right now it's got a t-mobile sim running Descendant Treble ROM - A only ARM GSI. Works like dream. I never tried VoLTE before I switched from T-Mobile and ATT doesn't offer it in my area.

Same here. I tried it a little while ago. I just can't update my profile or PRL on it, but LTE did work.

Update your device to PIE, unlock your bootloader, flash the newest TWRP build that works with PIE, download the A Only ARM build, unzip it, you should have a system img. Boot to fastboot, fastboot flash system system.img, boot to TWRP, flash this https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/universal-dm-verity-forceencrypt-t3817389. Boot the rom one time. Then boot back to TWRP and flash pico gapps for Pie. You'll have to get your device certified with google to get google apps to work.

Flash whatever version of Pie is out for your model. Your Model should be XT1922-? where the ? is a number. For example mine is XT1922-7. The retail US version is XT1922-9 etc
There should be a Pie update for whatever model you have. Flash the correct model and you should be good.

Tried to flash G988W firmware onto my G988U1 phone. SIM card not recognized

I live in Canada. I purchased an S20 Ultra off a seller on Canadian best buy (open box). I assumed it'd be a Canadian variant, but it was an unlocked US version (U1 firmware). OK whatever, but it meant my Samsung Pay doesn't work, along with a few other calling features.
I downloaded the patched Odin, downloaded the G988W firmware (with XAC CSC) with Frija, added the appropriate files to Odin (used Home CSC), and flashed it. The flashing itself went fine, but when I went to re-insert my SIM...nothing. It didn't even error out and say "No SIM Detected", I just had no coverage, and in SIM manager, both slots were empty.
Freaked out, and eventually flashed back to G988U1/XAA and thank Christ it works now. But my question is...why?
I dug though this forum before doing it to try and anticipate any issues. Followed the instructions to the letter, nowhere said this would be an issue. Couldn't even find any relevant support questions for this issue on this model. Not sure if it's a new development, but I absolutely don't want to risk messing my phone up further if I reattempt.
Bonus question: My CSC info is: XAA/XAA,XAA/SPR. Does that mean that it was originally a Sprint model phone, someone's flashed the firmware to an unbranded version, then sold it off as New (Open Box)?
You can't just flash a firmware from a different phone. The hardware is different, so the way to communicate with it is different. You're lucky it even booted, I wouldn't have expected that even. You're simply stuck with the original firmware and CSC list. Or, maybe you could try with custom ROMS but I wouldn't be so sure about it. Either way, you'll have to use a ROM/firmware that is built for your phone (G988U1).

Huh I thought the actual hardware between U1 and W was the same? They're both Snapdragons. Besides I've seen other posts of people doing the same (tbh, they were going from W to U1, but still)

Oh but you CAN.
U, U1, and W have all been cross-flashable ever since Samsung first introduced universal hardware, starting with the S8

Probably. Very common for online sellers to do.
The key probably lies in what the CSC shows as after flashing W firmware. If it stays as XAA, changing the CSC manually to a Canadian one could possibly make it work

I thought so too, lol
Any thoughts on why my flash caused the SIM issue? Did I maybe just install the wrong version? I don't think I did, I used Frija
Some further research led me to the subject of accidentally mucking up the modem firmware which I might have done

I Just did exactly the same and got a tmobile variant but want the W preferably the samsung factory rom not a carrier one. Which guide did you follow? I found this for the 21 Ultra and expect the steps to be similar https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-samsung-unlocked-bloatfree-firmware.4224423/
What calling features don't work in Canada? I have a W variant, live in Canada, and want an U1 to get esim working. I am also looking for a guide to follow to flash my phone.

Samsung Pay doesn't work - that's a big one for me, it's a pain in the **** losing that. Will only accept US ZIP codes when setting up.
Caller ID doesn't work
That extra info you get when texting (like seen/read stuff) doesn't work in the native Samsung text app, you have to use google messages (yeah, no)
I'm sure there's other stuff but those are the main ones
