Desktop mode for 8.4" devices - Huawei MediaPad M5 Themes, Apps, and Mods

**WARNING**
This is only partially working, there is an orientation/rotation issue that is preventing it being usable - the screen is rendered at 90 degrees and the bottom half is inaccessible. Only install if you are looking to help get it working.
Make sure you have working adb shell access before trying this, as you'll need it to escape desktop mode (pm disable com.huawei.desktop.systemui, then reboot).
Root required
From the attached zip file, push HwPCSystemUI to /system/priv-app and HwPCExplorer to /system/app
Add the following 2 lines to /system/build.prop:
Code:
ro.config.hw_emui_desktop_mode=true
ro.config.hw_emui_pad_pc_mode=true
Reboot tablet.
Edit your quick setting tiles to add the desktop mode tile

Sorry if its offtopic but, do we know is it possible to switch to desktop mode on M5 Lite?

This will be amazing if u managed to run DeX on m5

Any more news on this effort? Really hoping to be able to use the M5 8.4 in Desktop mode. Thanks for all of your work on this!

Is there any more news? Need desktop mode on this tablet, I really need it

Huawei have devloped their own Desktop Mode / Easy Projection.

Any further development on this?

Is there a non-root way to get those pushed to the device? It seems ludicrous that the less-powerful M5 10" gets desktop mode but not the newer M6 8.4". Thanks!

This Thread is outdated!
I will update it soon!
Thanks for your understanding
Hello everybody,
as there is no sub-forum for the new nook simple touch (help to get one),
all information are split on several posts in the nook color forum.
I want to create a central thread which list all the knowledge and work that is already done.
The most solutions are NOT my work!
I will link to the post and add the author,
please thank them for their work.

Screen Refresh
To avoid ghosting you can easily refresh the screen by pressing the n button twice (open and close default launcher).
Hidden back "button"
You can easily go back by swiping in the middle of the topbar from right to left.
(You may need this in stock apps / settings, after getting root you get 2 buttons for menu and back on this area)

I currently use ADW, which seems to work ok. Biggest complaint is I can't see the text on the settings menus...

Hi,
I'm not sure who to send this to in the xda-dev
community, but noticed that you were maintaining
the KB articles for the Nook Touch root. I tried
posting to the touchnooter dev thread, but I don't
have the requisite 10 messages, so I couldn't even
thank them.
I've been able to root my N2E with the
touchnooter root: the most recent 1.6.24. I'm
extremely happy with the results, but am having a
major concern that doesn't appear to be getting
proper coverage in that or other roots. (I initially
tried the noogie root with lesser results).
<Rant On>
IE, adb wireless/wifi access.
Nobody seems to be expounding on the fact that
it's an enormous freaking barn-door-size gaping
hole in the security of the N2E(or doing anything
to eliminate it). You yourself mention it in
passing in your KB article, but only give it a single
line.
Essentially, once these things are rooted, they
are -enormously- vulnerable if they are taken out
into the public, either at a Barnes&Noble store,
or at any other hotspot. All it takes is for a hacker
sitting there at that hotspot with a laptop, scanning
all of the IP's in that subnet for IP's that respond
to the adb port, and they can do a simple
#adb install MyFavBotController.apk
or somesuch thing. If adb pukes on them(IE, it's a
non-rooted Nook), then they just keep scanning.
Unless you're sharp and see the notification tab
popping up, you may never notice it. They can
install any freaking thing they want on your Nook.
Evetually you've got hundreds or thousands of
infected Nooks running bots, or some other fun
little thing(s) implanted on them.
Everybody seems to be incredibly happy about how
easy it makes their experimentation, and all of the
root developers seem to be focused on making sure
that adb wireless is enabled, either in the startup
scripting or even in the uRamdisk as with the
touchnooter root.
Sure, you can install the adbWireless app from the
market, and it will turn off adbWireless, but:
a) when you initially run the adbWireless app, it
doesn't even properly report that the adb wifi
function is on. It reports it as off, even though
it's actually still responding to adb connects.
So now you have to remember to turn it on,
and then back off. That does work(for a little
while).
b) it's not permanent with some roots, like the
touchnooter. I disable adb wifi with the
adbWireless app, it's off, and everything is nice
and safe? if I put my N2E through a power
cycle, guess what. It's been turned right back
on again. That's completely whacked.
1) For one thing, as an older person I may
forget to use adbWireless to keep turning
adb wifi off after power-cycles. Over and
over and over again.
2) Even if you remember, there's a window of
access during power-up that's about 30-60
seconds long before you'll be able to run
adbWireless to shut things down. A hacker
could do a lot of damage to your Nook in
that time.
3) I have heard rumors of Nooks turning
turning themselves back on after being
powered off. So now you could be in a
hotspot, your Nook could turn itself on in
your knapsack without you even knowing,
and the hacker sitting there has all the
time in the world to beat on your poor little
Nook.
It's BONEHEADED. adb Wifi should NOT EVER be
automatically turned on by the bootstrap. NEVER.
If developers of these roots want to make it easy for
the users or other devs using them, then simply
bundle the adbWireless application along with
SuperUser, Yahoo, and the other apk's they've
included in their root distro's.
Let the -users- decide when and where it's safe for
them to use adb Wifi. Devels are NOT doing them a
service by forcing adb Wifi on them, or encouraging
them to use it under dangerous circumstances.
</Rant Off>
Sorry, but I have a rooted Nook that I'd like to take
outside the confines of my home. Unfortunately,
I don't dare to now. So yah, I'm feeling cranky :-(
rev0l. -please- pass this on to any developers
you might have contacts with.
Thank you!

I love Zeam.
I think that the best way to avoid the wireless adb security hole would be to enable adb over usb and disable adb wireless if it is possible.
I have read on irc someone (maybe JesusFreke) saying that we just have to do something like modifying adb or doing something else (I don't remember very well)
I'm also trying to find out how to adb with usb. In particular I'm looking to get my N2E to connect to my iPhone running MyWi 4.0. I've read that the nookdevs Ad-Hoc_WiFi wpa_supplicant file for the NC will work with the N2E, but I haven't found a way to connect with USB and I'm too scared to try it over wifi in case it goes wrong and I won't be able to connect with adb over wifi to fix it. Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit :
Managed to get ad-hoc wifi working by pushing the fixed wpa_supplicant.adhocfix file to the /system/bin/ folder with adb over wifi.
Then, I switched the wifi off on the N2E and opened terminal emulator and did the following :
Code:
su
adb shell mount -o rw,remount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
mount
cd /system/bin
mv wpa_supplicant wpa_supplicant.old */make backup of original wpa_supplicant file/*
mv wpa_supplicant.adhocfix wpa_supplicant
chmod 755 /system/bin/wpa_supplicant
exit
I am now able to connect to my iPhone's MyWi hotspot.
For security when connecting to a public hotspot, I have installed the ttxapps wifi adb app from the android market and turned off adb over wifi, meaning I can toggle it on only when I wish to connect on my home network.
does anyone have system restore image?

J.Harmon said:
I figured out how to get a full factory "re-image" of my nook touch.
I followed the instructions for the nook color here:
Method two: Set the Boot counter to 8 by typing
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I rooted my nook touch using touchnooter. Loaded up the amazon app store and played around for a while. But I found after I rooted the nook that the nook store didn't work any more. So i wanted to get back to factory state. I then installed the wireless adb app. I logged in to my nook using my linux pc and followed the above directions. After the re-image you have to do a data reset by going in and restoring to factory settings in the nook itself.
As soon as I gave the reboot command it started the re-image as seen in this link:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...2E_Restore.JPG
I'm sending you this message because I'm a "noob" and can't post in the developer forums. So if you wouldn't mind reposting for the others to use.

Was anybody else able to get to "Restoring Factory Image..." dialog?
It happened to me after 20+ resets, I was just searching for bricked N2E solution and kept on pressing the button... I would like to know how to replicate this again
i tried it with the 8 times boot failure method, it brings up the factroy reset screen, but it does not the reall factory reset, root and some other stuff were still n the nook after this "factory reset" don't know..
and don't tried (or even read) the method from the pm...
too busy at the moment :/
Inspired by rmkenney12 (and rev0l), I updated the uRamdisk file from TouchNooter 1.6.24 so that adb over wi-fi does not run at boot.
Disclaimer: Don't try this unless you know how to restore your nook in case it does not work.
To install the new uRamdisk:
Unzip the attached file somewhere, then...
Code:
adb connect <nook>
adb shell mkdir /cache/boot
adb shell mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /cache/boot
adb push <path>/uRamdisk /cache/boot
adb reboot
Cross your fingers and hope it works.
You will also want to download an app to turn adb on and off. Search market for 'wifi adb'.
P.S. Does anyone know specifically what needs to be changed in the uRamdisk to enable adb over usb?
This guide isn't working for me. It says that after you create a noogie sd card, just pop it in, start the nook and it will mount the 7 partitions....
What 7 partitions? They never show for me. When I start the nook with the card inside it mounts the "boot" partition which is 64.8 out of 74.7 megabytes.
That's it. That's all I see. Inside of this partition are the files that were contained in the noogie image.

[TUTORIAL] Restore Glance on Windows 10 Redstone for Unsupported Devices

Hello all,
I just wanna share a tutorial on how to restore glance screen on Windows 10 Redstone for older devices. I made this tutorial because there are so many people asking how to restore glance functionality after they update their device to Redstone. There are some guides on it but they are really hard to find. There is even an option to enable old glance screen on Gustav's Interop Tools but lot of people don't know how to use it
This tutorial is based on what I always did to restore the glance screen on my Lumia 920. Make sure that your device had glance screen feature when it was on Windows Phone. Otherwise, this trick wouldn't work. Follow this tutorial on your own risk. I'm not responsible for any damage caused to your device.
Part 1: Install Interop Tools & Glance Screen APPX
On your PC, Download the latest version of Interop Tools from https://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-10-mobile/windows-10-mobile-apps-and-games/app-interop-tools-versatile-registry-t3445271 and the attached glancescreen_appx.zip. Put all the APPXs (including dependencies) on your phone storage (e.g. Download folder)
On your phone. go to Settings > Update & security > For developers
Turn on Developer mode, Device Discovery and Device Portal
Open Microsoft Edge, and go to http://127.0.0.1/ to open Device Portal (it is possible to do this using your PC via WiFi but it'll be slower since the APPXs need to be transfered via WiFi)
If there is a certificate error, ignore it and click Continue to this webpage
You might be asked to authenticate. Go to the previous developer settings and click Pair button
On the Device Portal, Click Apps on the left sidebar
Install all Interop Tools dependencies ONE BY ONE. After that, install the main Interop Tools APPX
Install glancescreen.appx
Turn off Device Discovery and Device Portal on the developer settings
Part 2: Restore Missing Glance Files & Registry
Open Interop Tools > This Device. Open sidebar, choose Interop Unlock
Check Restore NDTKSvc and restart your device (on some occasions, the other option can't be turned on until you restart your device)
Open Interop Tools > This Device > Interop Unlock. Check Full Filesystem Access and restart your device once more (some folders can't be seen until you restart the device)
Connect your device to your PC via USB
On your PC, download the attached missing_glance_files.zip and put them on [Your Phone]\Data\SharedData\OEM\Public\ using Windows Explorer
Open Interop Tools and turn off Full Filesystem Access
Open sidebar, choose Tweaks
Scroll down and turn on Enable Old Glance Screen (RS1)
Part 3: Fix Glance Font (Non-WXGA devices only)
Open Settings > System > About. Click More info button and check your device Screen resolution
If it's 768x1280 (WXGA), jump to part 4. Otherwise, open Interop Tools > This Device. Open sidebar, choose Registry Browser
Navigate to HKLM\Software\OEM\Nokia\lpm\FontFile
If your device screen resolution is 480x800 (WVGA), replace lpmFont_WXGA.bin with lpmFont_WVGA.bin. For other resolutions, you might wanna check out the other fonts inside lpmFonts_4.1.12.4 folder in the attached missing_glance_files.zip
Part 4: Update Glance Screen
Open Store. Open sidebar, choose Downloads and updates
Click Check for updates and update Glance Screen
Restart your device

How to Increase Glance Font to Fit Device Screen Like on Windows Phone
The glance font on Windows Phone is bigger than on Windows 10 Mobile so that the text fits the device screen. I actually prefer the smaller font size because that's how the glance screen displayed on the new devices and it looks more elegant. But if you still want to increase the font size, here's the steps...
Open Interop Tools > This Device. Open sidebar, choose Registry Browser
Navigate to HKLM\Software\OEM\Nokia\lpm\FontFile
Replace \Data\SharedData\OEM\Public\lpmFonts_4.1.12.4\ with \Windows\system32\

If glance screen was available on the device while it's on Windows Phone, then it would work. Otherwise, nope, I don't think so
thanks, working on my 920.
On my 1020 worked yeah but after while screen goes crazy and nightmode when time change place to up its fuked. 15014 not worked even soft reset or what ever. 15007 worked while after glance installed.
So last 2 fast updates (15007 and 15014) glance not working anymore what ever you do. Not trying to install anymore glance and phone works ok and im happy.

Does it flicker vertically? I have two Lumia 920, both of them use the same firmware and build. But one of them flickers like hell when showing glance screen and the flicker won't stop until I reboot the device. I read somewhere it's a software problem, someone said that the double tap to unlock option needs to be be turned off (i haven't tried that btw). But I think it has something to do with the hardware since the other 920 worked flawlessly without turning off the double tap to unlock option. Still have no idea why some devices does that...
Btw warning updated, I only tested this on RS1
No nothing vertically just crazy blurred mesh screen and cant do anything. Shutting phone like pushed shutdown putton when screen is blurred and do like normally (fingered down) phone shut down and camera sounds do work but screen is total mesh. Hard reset worked and when booted i didnt even try to put glance stuff on and now work. Nothing to do about doubletab i tested just glance stuff. Ok latest fast build is jamming making calls, not showing maked calls and sendet messages so hell please dont even try it.. Going back to last worked backup (slow build) and wait some

Finally! I thought I'm the only one having trouble deactivating full filesystem access
How to Fix MTP Root Path to Deactivate Full Filesystem Access
If you can't deactivate full filesystem access by just unchecking its checkbox on Interop Tools, I found a way to fix it
Open Interop Tools > This Device. Open sidebar, choose Interop Unlock
Check Full Filesystem Access
Enter C:\Data\Users\Public on MTP Root Path
Click the write button next to MTP Root Path
Uncheck Full Filesystem Access

Broken screen and digitizer, enable cast to chromecast with USB keyboard

Hi guys,
I'm in trouble with my OP3T and would really appreciate your help here.
I dropped the phone to the ground and broke the screen and digitizer
I would like to cast the screen to my chromecast to recover my files and maybe later repurpose the phone as a media player through a displaylink adapter.
I have connected a USB keyboard and mouse and can interact with the phone.
Can someone guide me through the steps (keypresses) to enable the cast to my chromecast?

Just login into your One+ account , demand an RMA, follow the instructions and for around 120 euro you will be all good within 2 weeks with a fully functional phone.
Yeah sure I thought about that but I've been a fool and bought the phone on gearbest, hoping to save a little bit at that time...
As the phone was not bought on the oneplus website, it's a bit tricky for the warranty.
Furthermore, I wasn't aware that it was a model made for the Chinese market so the 4G reception has always been horrible here in Europe.
The local repair shops are asking 160€ or more to replace the screen, it's not worth it especially knowing about the non-existent 4G.
Ok I managed to cast another phone to my chromecast using only the usb keyboard/mouse... but I guess the menu structure is not the same on the OP3T as that doesn't work.
Here is what I have thus far:
- Unlock the phone with fingerprint
- Open the app panel with the mouse (move to the bottom of the screen then drag it up)
- Type "param" > this will filter the list, only the parameters app will remain
- Press TAB twice to highlight the parameters app
- Press ENTER
The next part is tricky but doable:
- Move the cursor at the top right of the screen
- Move the cursor slightly down and left and click on the search icon (you have to fish for it a little bit, but you can hear a "click" once you've succeeded)
- Type "cast"
- Press TAB
- Press ENTER (that brings you to the display menu)
- Go at the bottom (Press the down arrow until you stop hearing click sounds)
- Press ENTER to select the cast menu
- Press TAB to select the chromecast device (only one in my case)
- Press ENTER to start casting
I would be very grateful if someone could try on his OP3T and tell me what differs and what key sequence I should press :good:

If your version of TWRP has USB-OTG enabled, then you can boot into recovery and use your mouse to take a full backup.
TWRP also enables MTP and you can retrieve the backup to your laptop.

Except I can't really use the mouse to create a backup in TWRP as I don't see the screen
I did recover some files with using ADB while in recovery mode, but I didn't manage to do a full backup.
And that won't help me in re-purposing the phone to play prime video and local media files through a displaylink adapter

For a full backup, you can create an openrecoveryscript which is recognized by TWRP and upon boot into recovery, TWRP will automatically make a backup as specified in the script and you can pull that over MTP.

It's cheaper than that. To be more precise it costs 88 EUR. Just sent mine last week
I still would like to reuse the phone as a media center.

[MOD]No notch ? Welcome to the immersive mode ! Remove the notification bar

Hi,
Our Xiaomi MI 9T is splendid with its great AMOLED full screen without any notch or hole.
However, the web browsers like Chrome (and others apps) doesn't propose the possibility in the settings to remove the notification bar and to get a true immersive full screen mode.
No problem, adb is there!
No need to root the smartphone.
EDIT: I have tested "Immersive Manager Application" from Google Play Store and it's perfect. Very simple and it works even when you reboot your phone.
No more need to type adb commands below except at least few adb commands to grant the Secure Settings permission to the app. This is well explained by the application when you launch it the first time.
I let the adb commands below for information in case we had some "purists" who prefer adb than an immersive app.
1/ Enable the Developper mode
Go to Parameters/ About the phone
Click many times (at least 10) on the MIUI Version to activate the Developper mode
2/ Enable USB Debugging
Go to Parameters/... Others parameters/Developper options
Click on USB debugging
Click on Install via USB => You will have to connect to your MI account
Click on USB debugging (security parameters)
3/ Launch adb on your PC
Get adb.exe on the net (very easy)
Put it in a folder of your PC (for instance C:/adb)
Connect your smartphone to the PC
Launch a DOS command window
Go to the adb folder => cd /adb
To check if your smartphone is ready, type:
Code:
adb devices
If it's the first time, there will be a popup on your smartphone to authorize the adb commands
Then, normally your device will appear after typing "adb devices"
4/ Get the list of applications installed on your smartphone
Code:
adb shell pm list packages
Retrieve the name of the application(s) you want to remove the notification bar.
5a/ For instance, hide the notification bar only for Chrome and Google Photos
Code:
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.status=com.android.chrome,com.google.android.apps.photos
Note: Each time you enter this command, you cancel the previous one. You need to type only one command with all the apps you want to remove the notification bar (names of app are separated by a comma ,).
5b/ For instance, if you want to hide the notification bar for all the applications
Code:
adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.status=*
6/ If you want to cancel this setting and put back the notification bar
Code:
adb shell settings put global policy_control null*
Enjoy your brillant full screen mainly when you are in dark mode.
:good:
Pls the screen..

Do you have root permissions? If the asnwer is "yes" you can do this:
Install terminal emulator from google play store. Open it and writte "su"
now writte this:
settings put global policy_control immersive.status=*
Tachan! you have immensive mode active. Only save the command in a note app. Always you reboot your phone the only thing you have to do is open terminal, su and paste your command.
A lot more easy and fast than do it with adb. the only "problem" is you need root.
If someone knows how to add an exception, please say so.
How do you show it on lock screen? Any ideas?

Enable USB debugging (security settings) under developer options.
I used SystemUI Tuner as it allows for blacklisting apps (sucha as whatsapp) that don´t manage full screen well.

Thank you! It worked, but as stated above, it reset after phone restart.
Maybe running a tasker command at boot might fix it ?
Edit: Use the Immersive Manager app (thank me later!)

No, it's not necessary to unlock the bootloader.
You have just to activate the developper mode as I indicate it.

Yes, it's true. Each time you reboot the phone, you should loose the setting.
And good point, thank you Ramsyst, I didn't check on Google Play Store the myriad of immersive mode applications!!
I have tested "Immersive Manager Application" and it's perfect. Very simple and it works even when you reboot your phone. :good::good:
I had previously created a task with Tasker and AutoTools (paid version) to change the immersive mode with the "Custom Setting" feature. But knowing that there are many apps (free and paid version) doing that better than AutoTools, it's not usefull to describe how I did it.

With Tasker you already have an option to make all apps you want to go immersive! There is no need to use any other command or app.
I believe everybody in the world should buy tasker
Is the best Android app. It may looks hard in the begining, but your imagination is the limit to do whatever you want.

You're right. I had never tested the split screen function. The notification bar is not hidden on split screen mode even when immersive mode is activated. The result is a bit weird as there is a mix of notification bar and app on the top of the screen.
"Google search" indicates that you are not the first one to face this issue... but apparently no solution has been found so far.
If somebody can help.

That is is interesting !! - 2 problems I encountered are
1.Tasker toasts are working only with in Tasker context - I mean if open the tasker and a do a flash message ,it flashes the message- But when on a normal working (Tasker is in background) - no toast message appears.
2.Even if I enable all of the permission, when Tasker tries to switch on the WIfi with in Tasker context as window popes out asking Tasker want to switch on Wifi - Allow or Prohibit -
If Tasker is in background, this window can't appear and nothing happens.
Finally ,I went to Developer options,Disabled the permission monitoring(last option) s- that this started working
Can you please confirm on these 2 points?
Confirm that! I had exactly the same problem with wifi on/wifi off and had to disable permission monitoring to get it working. It was the same for the initial adb permission command you need to get Tasker up and running. Unfortunately, at the moment I haven't got the chance to look into it but from version 5.9.2 Tasker has the new adb wifi commands which give it almost root like power. Perhaps one of these would be able to overcome the permission monitoring problem so that we can keep it active. Try it if you can, I would be very interested to hear if you managed to get that working.

Sorry I didn't get some part of your message _"It was the same for the initial adb permission command you need to get Tasker up and running" - Can you pl elaborate?
" Try it if you can..." - it means the ADB wifi commands ?I couldn't locate any permission disabling commands with adb wifi.
One good news is that I tried out Tasker in Android 10- COlor OS 7 and I see that Toast functionality is working in that

Good news that Tasker works well in Color OS 7 which will get around March it seems. Regarding the initial ADB permission, I meant the message you get when you first install Tasker on a non-rooted device. In that case you need to execute a specific permission command via ADB to get Tasker up and running correctly.
What I meant with "Try if you can..." is that If you have the opportunity you may want to check if perhaps one of the new ADB wifi commands would be capable of setting wifi on and off despite permission monitor being active instead of disabled as we're doing now. Hope that will work so we can keep permission monitor active.
Guess ,it is more of Color OS issue , with the battery saved enabled,Tasker is missing the Alarm - I did a simple experiment of logging of BAttery level to a file in every 10 minutes.
If I look at the file now ,either the logging is not continuous or stopped after sleeping for one or hour or so !!! -- But this is not the case with MIUI - It's sharp on time with battery saver or not.
More importantly one thing I noticed is that when battery saver is on ,you can't lock the application in memory - Flip side , with battery saver on ,if I invoke recents and clear the memory ,evrything will be wiped and even when battery saver is off,the applications which you want to be in memory in normal condition will not be there!!!
Bluetooth problems with Android 10:
With my Realme X2 and Realme Ui 1.0 (Android 10) i can not start Bluetooth because my smartphone always asks with an popup for an permission ("Tasker needs the following permission: set Bluetooth on/off"). My desktop links give me the error code "action bluetooth failed".
How can i disable this popup asking for an permission? Or can i made tasker to click on yes itself?
