Voice control Shield with Harmony Remote using Alexa or Google Home or Android phone? - Shield Android TV Accessories

I am looking for the easiest way to add voice control back to the Shield 2017 now that I am using a Harmony hub remote. I would mainly just use it for the voice search feature on apps like YouTube and such. Would something like Alexa or Google Home be the best way, or can it be done from an Android phone? Thanks.

The Android TV Remote android app is one option for sure.

AFTV Remote on Android Phones - For gaming?

So I found the simple way to pair the AFTV remote to my Android phone (holding the Menu button while searching) and now control my Android with the little thing.
I grabbed Crossy Road on Amazon Appstore, and now have it on both my AFTV and phone. Of course, only the AFTV version lets me play with the controller. So the question is this... What app is good to make the AFTV's basic controls work on the screen?
I had the Sixaxis Controller app on my Galaxy S3 long ago, and that proved useful for controlling most non-controller games (Sonic Dash springs to mind). What's good for that with little remotes like the AFTV's then?

[Q] Just got the ATV fire this morning ....

and I have now installed Kodi on there. What it is I would like though is to revamp the homescreen with a few apps I would like, Western Digital MyCloud plus the 'must have app's' . When I connected the box initially the software was updated so I don't know if that means I ruined any possibility of getting the full potential from the device as I read from several sites yesterday that Amazon have included an update that will brick these boxes if they have been rooted. Can these box still be rooted 'SAFELY' when they've been updated?
I installed Western Digital and also another app but I ended up removing both as it seemed I either needed to have a touch screen device or a mouse, is there a way to use your phone for this or the remote for that matter to control apps?
Yes there is an app called remote mouse which works with the FTV (http://www.amazon.com/Remote-Mouse-for-Fire-TV/dp/B00S4MU62I/?tag=aftvn-20). Also, I would suggest using FiredTV launcher so you can have your apps on your (alternative) homescreen. This may not suit if you are an Amazon Prime customer and like to have their content on your homescreen too.
Just for a moment a sense of relief and excitement came over me when you mentioned I could use my phone, then upon following and reading the link it would seem I need an Android phone....alas I have a iPhone 6+, I'm I buggered before Ive even began
I see that there is a Logitech K400r Wireless Touch Keyboard which is meant to work well with the AFTV, but to be fair I want less clutter around me so really want to squeeze every bit of potential from the AFTV and my phone in this particular instant.
I've installed FiredTV Launcher which works well but is there a way to have it so it's the default home screen without having to root the device?

Yes, there's a setting you have to change in FiredTV launcher which enables/disables home button detection. Also, I would suggest using Llama to link an app you don't or won't use on your home screen to launch FiredTV launcher if the "proper" home screen launches. That's what I've done.

That was great m8, I've now got FireTV to launch on bootup using AFTV Launcher Helper which works great for other applications also like Kodi. I haven't worked out how to disable home button detection as yet though.
So are you aware of any app for IOS that will allow to navigation on the amazon tv like a keyboard & mouse? I've got Amazon Fire TV remote on my iPhone but that does not really work with mouse control so there are app which I would like but unable to control correctly.

Practically everything you could want to know about the FireTV can be found at:

Personally I had some inconsistent performance with decoding x264, DTS, and other odd issues (such as connecting to an NFS share via ethernet) with my FireTV; I returned it and purchased an Chromebox instead. and installed OpenELEC on it... it's been on for months, and have only had to reset after updates; -couldn't be happier! If you plan to use this device primarily for Kodi, I would recommend looking into using a Chromebox.

The author just recently released an iOS version of the app with the same name in the App Store. I have it loaded on my iPhone 6 and it works great. You will need to sideload the android server portion on the Fire TV for your iPhone to be able to control the Fire TV.

Indeed. Chromebox/openELEC is the best. Gigabit ethernet, HD audio. I happily use my FTV for Netflix, and Amazon Prime Videos and Music.
you should pick up the FAVI FE02RF-BL Mini 2.4GHz Wireless PC / Tablet Keyboard/Touchpad. It comes with a USB dongle you plug in the AFTV, and it works without having to pair it. Just turn it on, and you're good to go. It has a backlit keyboard, and a working touchpad. It also has a working Home button, and menu button.

Also, there's an app in the app store called FIRE TV for ios. I believe it has a working mouse and keyboard. I'm not positive though. Give it a try.

Considering picking up the new fire TV. have a few specific questions.

Is there any way to replace the home launcher entirely? Like say if i want to use HAL Launcher or something? I would like to be able to fully customize the home screen.
Google apps possible at all? (Google play store for apps for example)
Dualshock 4 support via bluetooth? (like will it pair and work lag free without root?)
How integrated is the voice search? anything more than jsut the home screen and default amazon apps that can take advantage of the voice remote?
Obviously the device isnt officially out yet, but is anyone currently working on or planning on working on root for the new fire tv? would any of my questions be solved via root?
If rooted, is it easy to block fire tv updates?
Finally, what are the chances of custom ROMs? Would I be able to load stock android tv on the fire tv?
I know alot of the questions are nearly impossible to tell at this point, but if you cant answer for the new fire tv, what are the chances of any of them on the current old fire tv? thanks.

I would say to forget about rooting and custom ROMs. It might happen (again) but unlikely. Go check out the sub thread.
The Voice search is pretty much useless for anything other than Amazon services. I never use it. Others might. Do you want to ask your TV what the weather is like outside and get a generic report? If so, go for it.
You can replace the home screen with the FireStarter launcher which makes it easier to get to sideloaded apps, or just bind the Home Button to two other actions (double and single click). Launching Kodi is the obvious choice.
Firestarter currently has problems with OS 5, but these are likely to be resolved within a few weeks. It works fine now, but you have to toggle a setting switch (ADB) every time you cold boot. It's no big deal if you're savvy, but not the sort of issue you'd want to lump on your folks.

how to tv.youtube.com app into shield ?

i just brought this thing just for youtube tv and i cant seem to find the app to watch tv ... any way get this to work before i return it ?
basically, i want it to work like it was a tablet so i can use the remote to switch over the channels
If the app is not available in the Play Store of Android TV then you can download it from:
http://www.apkmirror.com/?post_type=app_release&searchtype=apk&s=youtube+tv
sideload it and install it. You must enable Unknown Sources.
There are many videos that shows you how to do that and install sideloaded apps.
However, once done it could or not work properly, the service and app are very new.

Doesn't work right
The app runs in portrait mode, and only accepts the left/right directional keys. This means you can't actually watch any channels or recordings.

Control firestick with Siri Shortcuts?

anyone know if firestick supports some kind of external control protocol? I stumbled on a Siri shortcut that allows me to control my tcl tv with siri and I’m wondering if I can do the same with the firestick, if firestick apps can do it then there has to be a listening port.
You can do a lot through ADB
Android Debug Bridge (adb) | Android Studio | Android Developers
Find out about the Android Debug Bridge, a versatile command-line tool that lets you communicate with a device.
developer.android.com
And a number of things through Alexa.
I'm not sure about Siri communicating directly with the FireTV.

I thought of adb but I’m not sure that can work with the shortcuts app. Siri doesn’t communicate directly with the firestick, a shortcut has to be created in the shortcut app like a script, then all I have to say is “hey Siri [name of shortcut]” for it to run.
Also firestick apps don’t use adb so I’m pretty sure there’s a listening port for button presses just don’t know what it is or what the key press command is or if that’s how it even works.
Here’s the ECP link for tcl TVs https://developer.roku.com/en-ca/docs/developer-program/debugging/external-control-api.md
here’s an example of a shortcut for my tcl tv to change hdmi port below.
You can launch any FireTV/Android app with an ADB command remotely. Using this along with something like HomeAssistant and Alexa integration you can pretty much voice control any function you can imagine. HomeAssistant also has at least 2 homekit integrations, so something similar might be possible with Siri. But this would be a lot more involved than installing an app.
I'm not familiar with iOS and Siri. I imagine TCL made an app for voice control, that runs on the TV, that can communicate with Siri. I doubt Amazon made something like that for FireTV since Siri is in competition with Alexa. But maybe there is a third party app?

No tcl just has a listening port for key presses & other things, But it doesn’t listen for Siri voice commands.
iOS has a shortcuts app that allows you to create shortcuts through scripting & those shortcuts (scripts) Can be activated with Siri by saying the name of the shortcut, so it works like this
“Hey Siri Xbox” -> activates the shortcut (a script named “Xbox”) which is scripted to send commands to the tv through a listening port.
So what I need to know is what ports / commands do firestick apps use for its button presses, then I can create a script (shortcut) to be used with Siri.
