Ok so after work last night I decided to have a lil look round, swapped my sim out from my Op5t and started the setup, which even with the China rom after switching language which luckily was the first option was no effort at all.
Instantly picked up my 4G signal with my network which is 3 U K. So I next did the 3 or 4 apks to enable Google functionality (playstore etc).
Already had my laptop out and remember it was prepped for unlocking my redmi note, so I logged in and did the process. Ok so the 720hr wait time appeared, I understand why they did this. However 30days is looooonnnnggg.
Sorry for the essay, the only real reason for this post is to confirm if I can/cannot go from my China rom to Global, not worried about root. I don't mind waiting but if there's a way I'd like to know.
Side note: phone is decent. I'm excited to finally flash the granny out of it.
I will love it when the custom gangs get their hands on a stable rom.

I'm I the same boat as you, running china beta at the moment because without an unlocked bootloader you cannot go to global rom. You will get a bootloop. I have the 128gb blue one, and it is awesome! The battery is awesome, my light will go out every day before my Mi max 3 will go out

If contacts sync is not working you need to go to Settings -> Installed apps -> Google play services framework, enable autostart, click on permissions and allow them all, click also on Battery saver and set it to No restrictions.
Do the same steps for the rest (Google play store, Google services, Google Account Manager, Google Calendar Sync, Google Contacts Sync)

I don't use google contacts, and also didn't want to change the buttons. It seems that was removed from miui a while ago...

Updated Google Now today, and I have a few bugs.
The worst bug: When I tap on the menu key, the menu only quickly flashes.
I cannot get a card back if I accidentally swipe it away.
I cannot remove a stock from the stock card.
The vioce search is not working.
Also, although not a bug, the widget design looks too simplistic, displays minimal info (guess Google wants us to come inside), takes up only 4x3 space as a 4x4 widget. If I shrink it down to 4x3, then it will take 4x2 space, and so on. Drives me nuts.
As their flagship app, I am surprised at the low quality of this major update.
Anyone else care to share their feedback?
Maybe uninstall and re-install? Maybe try a reboot? I'm on rooted bone stock and it works fine.. I think as more cards come up the widget will use more space hence the large 4x4 space required .. Voice search working fine as well as the menu key long press

After you use long press to enter Google now, could you tap on menu again and see what happens? Mine will only flash the menu. Definitely a bug.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. Still the same bugs. I have also seen the same complaints in the play store now.
I finally had to uninstall the update and everything is fine again. Saw a lot of similar complaints on Google play. Can't believe this comes from Google and their flagship app.

Yea.. You're right.. Once in GN the menu is borked..
Yes, my menu button in Google Now is not working either, just to confirm and complain. WTF. Such an obvious mishap. I have not seen other phones complain about it though.
my google now is working as it was before as far as i can tell. I do a long press on the menu button on the 'button' next to the home key or long press on the google search bar to bring me into google now. Then I press the menu key which brings me to settings page
The settings page has the Google Now at the top, then voice, then phone search, then privacy and accounts. Everything works fine running cleanrom 4.0.5
My menu also flashes and then goes away.

The only work around is clicking the weather card in Google now and pressing settings. It doesn't flash then.

Same thing happening on my rooted note 2.
On Google Play it looks like most of the issues with the menu key are from GN2 users, except one report from a S3 Mini user.
The other major complaint is that the weather hourly slider is gone after the update.
And the widget sizing problem is popular too.
I cleared data in app settings menu for Google search and all is well.

There is another thread on xda where someone with the HTC sensation is having the same issue. I have a friend with the international note 2. He said he had the issue first couple tries and then it fixed itself. I tried cleaning data, uninstalling and using a themed Google now apk and nothing works. I'm rooted on clean ROM ace 4.0.5

Same bug here (stock unrooted). Clearing cache/data doesn't help. Visiting the weather card does work around the bug.
After install rom manager not working. Uninstalled and reinstalled now working.

I want to add a hotmail email account?
Also location services not working on map. When I press navigation "waiting for location" appears. It seems to be taking a long time. It works after a few minutes. I went into maps found my location as you said. Anyway to make location work faster.
Also at the top right hand side of my phone the sync arrows are there? What does that mean.
Also I do not see a browser that installed. I thought Chrome would be on the device. Don't see it?

For the browser why won't u just download chrome from the play store? Location works but it is slow. U need to remember miui or any custom ROM for that matter are all work in progress and should not be taken as a perfect working ROM. There should be a tab on the email app that should let u add another email.

What are the two sync arrows at the top of the screen. Can I get rid of this
It was syncing continuously. Went to toggle screen saw syncing turning. Pressed it and auto sync appeared the symbol disappeared from top of screen. Just letting you know in case anyone else has this problem.

Go to settings accounts. Its probably the xioami account syncing your pic,call log,MMS just uncheck those and it should stop.

I have two gallery apps on my computer. One is Google which plays slide shows etc
One is the Miui Gallery Apk. which does not work.
Can I delete the Miui Gallery Apk using root explorer and safely loose anything?

When I open Google search I get message location services not on. I turned everyone of the location services I can find. My maps are working.
Everything seems to be working. Except that annoying message? I tried putting the network apk. System apps. I got message skip or cancel. I choose skip. Then I tried again and choose overwrite that failed?
Anyone else not getting the offline NAV and Search for downloaded map areas? It's supposed to be functional but it is not on my M9 (stock, S-On).

It's not in 'Your Places' anymore. It's 3 line items down from there in
'Offline Areas'.
Choose that and use the blue + Add button on lower right to add areas.
If not there or doesn't work, choose Maps in Apps and clear Data.
If that doesn't work, go back to that place and uninstall updates.
Then go back to Play Store and get Maps update. Hope this works good
for you.

Yeah...that's what I was thinking. Did all of that..no "offline areas" in the menu still....just the same old your places use of offline maps. From the reviews I'm not the only one...frustrating...

Do you by any chance have any Google apps disabled in Apps? That's the only other thing
I can think of since uninstall of updates and reinstall failed for you.

LMAO! Tell me about it! Though I like this phone..not in love with it like I was my M8 (which I still have S-OFF, unlocked, rooted). Providing the java cards still work...first thing I do with my M10 in March (benefits of being on the NJ state contract and eligible to upgrade every 10 months..well that and $50/month for unlimited everything) is send it out to be S-OFF'd then transfer everything from my M9 over and be rid of this phone.

Since March is awhile away, you could send it to Dottat
for quick S-0ff, then install the Fluent rom that was released
2 or 3 days ago. Changes the phone hugely for the good.....

And just like that out of the blue...viola! I now have "Offline Areas" in my sldie out menu on maps...SO WEIRD!!!
Was there a slow rolling out Play Services update recently that may have been needed to activate that feature within the new maps? I just don't get it...lol
I want to root my pixel 2xl but I did not find any good reasons for it. I want Xposed so bad but it doesn't support 8.0 yet, other then that I don't know what good apps for it. I have nexus 4 a few years ago but I move to iPhone for 2 years and just back to Pixel 2xl. It is a very good phone, much better and friendly.

Well do yourself a favor and unlock the bootloader now which will wipe your data from the phone. This is now a two step process you can read about in the "unlock and root" guides. This will save you from having to wipe your phone later when you find a good reason to root. I run very few root apps, but ad blocking is top of the list. I also use Titanium Backup regularly. Root has been very stable lately, and there are several modules available from within Magisk that maybe you should read up on. Welcome back to the Community. :good:

How about just because? LOL. The majority of users that root, are the people who like to tinker and are tech-savvy. I use for ad blocker, Greenify, titanium backup (because it's the best), occasionally modifying system settings, etc...I look at it as almost having administrative rights on MY system. Who would use a Windows PC as a standard user?

and download the one for substratum at the top of the OP.
I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.suphi.swipenavigation for navigation. Not quite iPhone X style but it works
Most of the mods don't work as they are for the Galaxy S8 but the nav bar height does

Wow ive always used apps to make it just vanish but when i scroll up the nav always come up and it was so annoying. awesome. Can i ask whats your setup like?

Yeah, I had that issue and didn't like it. Enabling full immersive mode within Settings is another option to disable the nav bar but it breaks squeeze for assistant functionality. Editing the build.prop essentially just tells the system that the phone has built in hardware nav keys.
Then you can use an app like the one I mentioned in my above post to have pop out navigation functionality.
I've attached a few screenshots of my setup. Essentially, the nav bar doesn't exist on the home screen or in any apps until I swipe up from the bottom of the screen or wipe left from the right edge of the screen to pop the nav keys out. This setup has worked flawlessly for me since I got the phone nearly 2 months ago. I love it.
Awesome thanks. Yeah that's how I made mine. Simple just the 3 buttons. I didn't even realize that active edge still worked! But wow am I loving the full screen. These pie controls are amazing.

I used to use the Nav Fed app, now I just bookmarked their sign in page (placed a shortcut on the home screen) and work via the browser. I use Nav Fed almost daily!

I actually quit using it when I figured out I could do everything I needed online (bookmark) without the app.
It wan't a 'root' issue with me, per se.
Was removing apps to cut down on background batt drain, free up some storage space, etc.

Oh ok. I see. You should use Greenify with the Magisk add-on. Works amazingly well!

Fails for me as well China version. No error message and it doesn't actually crash which means it's coded to do it.
I've been trying to wrestle with this problem exclusively for the last couple of days.
I think our common experience is we all can get past the loading screen. The progress bar does not fill at all, and the app crashes immediately.
By default, the Huawei App Gallery's location is set to China. When I decided, finally, to log in my device the location switched to my country (Philippines). I decided to give ML another go and for the first time, the progress bar filled to about 75% before crashing again. Progress?
Meanwhile, I've been bombarding the support team via e-mail and FB with feedback from this experience.
The struggle continues... Hoping for a solution soon.
