USB OTG - lackluster speeds? - Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Questions & Answers

I want to use my Mi Mix 2 (MIUI 9.6.1.0 Global) with a hub to transfer files (pictures) between two external storages. The transfer rates are ok-ish, but I was hoping for more. Maybe someone here knows if it can be sped up?
I want to be able to back up pictures from a SDXC card (SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 128GB) to an SSD (Crucial BX300 480GB) in the field, using my phone to move the files. The hub I got is this one: click here, and even though it's a rather cheap construction it works as advertised.
When I connect the hub to my PC (USB Type C 3.1) I get cross transfer speeds of around 85 MB/s, which is pretty much the maximum read speed of the SD card.
Connected to the Mix 2 (USB Type C 2.0) the set up only averages around 14 MB/s, which isn't bad, but less then I expected, since USB 2.0 should have transfer speeds of up to 35 MB/s. The Problem is, that moving 128 GB at that speed takes 2.5 hours, which a) is too long, and b) is super hard on the Mix 2's battery, which probably wouldn't even hold that long.
Now my first question is: Why oh why does this otherwise wonderful 2017 flagship device only have USB 2.0?!
And the second one is: Who knows a solution other than buying a Samsung with USB 3.1?

USB Card Reader

Hi,
Is there any usb2 flash card reader out there that is fast?
I just bouth a sandisk MobileMate SD, a very convenient little thing, but it doesn't seem to be very fast, transferring 5b takes 30 sec roughly.
Are all readers the same, or can I buy someting with some performance?
I understand there is a limit to the SD card type you use, but c'mon, 200kb/s ???
I've got one of those 6-in-one FDD size USB2 ones in my machine, and it's pretty quick. I'd imagine most USB2 ones are going to be about the same speed. Sounds like you're getting low-speed USB rates of about 1.5Mb/s
is your USB port is ver 2
even your flash reader is ver 2
but your pc usb port is not
will not be fast
correct me if I m wrong

USB copy speed is extremely slow

USB copy speed I'm getting is max 3.2mb/s, and goes as low as 1.5, is this normal? I imagine I should be getting a lot better speeds over USB 2.0 and my SD card is a new Sandisk class 6 micro sd card.

Use the mirco SD adapter provided with Ur purchase of mirco SD card.. wire is just slow... adapter have direct contact with the hard drive.. so u would get faster transfer rate

I'm getting 8-9mb/s reading from sd to hard drive, writing from hd to sd is much slower at 2.5 - 3mb/s. This is using the original HTC usb cable.
Mmm try with wifi, there are some usuful app for this
USB is a mystic hardware somethimes have mysterious problem :s
inviato da HTC Desire Z
I have slow speed with usb too but only with Windows. If i use linux i get extreme speed over 15 Mb/s. I don't know if Windows has any restrictions...
Yeah I would just try either Bluetooth, a microsd adapter, or Wi-Fi instead.
Adapter is usually the fastest as the reader can interface almost directly with the hardware. Over USB you have several factors to consider, the speed of the port, as well as the speed of the phone (i.e.: what Mhz is it running at... and is the phone busy with something), and the speed of the internal microSD reader and so forth.
Plugging the card into the reader would be the fastest, however not very useful if you gota turn off your phone just to get the card out.
I've never tried the Wifi app route as for me the USB route has been fast enough, but can take a couple minutes to transfer say my CWM backups from the card to the computer.

Kingston OTG USB Flash Drive Review

This is a review of the Kingston DTDUO 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive.
I've been using a USB OTG adaptor and a normal USB drive for a while now but it was a clunky solution and had an unreliable connection. It's easy to bump and then corrupt a file mid transfer, which was also painfully slow. This flash drive is my solution to not having a micro SD slot in my phone and wanting a simple bit of storage that I can use everywhere. I anticipate travelling with it and using it as my main USB drive simply because of the ability to move things between my phone and computers so easily. It's very small and hangs off my key ring; the device has a small metal loop for this purpose but there was no string loop included. The dimensions are 27.5 x 16.5 x 8.5 mm at its largest points. The colour of the flip cover is smokey grey with a brown hue.
I found this drive at the local tech store for $25 AUD. It comes in sizes from 8GB - 64GB, and there is a USB 3.0 version also available. The build quality is decent, though the micro USB plug looks somewhat fragile (you can see a gap in the photos). Considering the notoriety of micro USB this worries me a little bit. When plugged into my phone it sits well and feels safe. It is small and easy to ignore, but this will also depend on where the micro USB port is on your phone. For my OnePlus One it sits happily at the bottom. When the device is unplugged from your phone the smokey cover protects the micro USB side. The way the device's cover flips up is a bit awkward, if you have the flat side of your micro USB port on your phone on the bottom of your phone then the little cover will face down into the surface your phone is sitting on. The way the OnePlus One port is oriented the cover stands up in the air (as you can see in DSC_5423). You could easily remove the cover, possibly without damaging anything, but this would leave the micro USB port exposed, so I probably wouldn't advise it unless it was really inconvenient.

All considered, I'm pretty happy with this little USB drive. It's very convenient and the speeds are adequate. I look forward to USB 3.0 C type devices, with a better connector and faster transfers.

Biggest Flash drive?

I have the Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 and I would like to know if a 256g flash drive will work? I watch movies and TV shows on the go, 64g is not enough (the Simpsons season 1 - 25 needs about 100g) I don't have a computer anymore just my tablet. I bought the seagate wireless plus 1tb and I couldn't get it to work, don't want to order a 256g flash drive and have same trouble. Any help would be great
Sorry no I am not rooted and due to the fact that I use my Samsung allshare cast hub daily and root items can't use the hub
Anyone?
Don't you mean SD card.? Some people say the highest you can go is 64 or 128gb
128 GB is the highest you can go

He probably means OTG cable with a hard drive. Simple drives tend to work the larger drives need more power to work via USB.

There is an available of cable that's a "y".....one leg is the USB and the other is another female micro USB for your charging cable. Can't remember where on ebay I got mine but it does work for my external hard drives with my GS5
128gb sd card is not big enough so I thought k would try a 256gb OTG flash drive. Has anyone tested?

This question left me extremely curious, so I have just purchased an OTG cable which will arrive in a few days. I will test out a few different EXT HDD sizes and post what the maximum my OTG will allow.
I do however forsee an increase in the discharge of the battery for larger storage devices, but we shall see.
Can't wait to see what u find
I'm gonna buy a sandisk ultra 64gb microUSB otg and I was looking for a bigger one but this must be the biggest one they have, can't wait to test it out. What I'll do is if my shows or movies won't fit I'm gonna have to erase the ones I've seen then try to make them fit. I suggest you get a 128gb micro SD card plus a big sized flash drive then you should be okay.

So I bought an OTG cable off ebay, and it arrived. I didn't change the format of any of my external drives as I don't have the space to store anything currently anywhere else. The tablet registers there is a drive connected however it can't mount the storage device due to an unknown format. The externals I tried were 2 portables (1x 500Gb usb2.0 and 1x 1Tb usb 3.0) and 2 desktops (1x 1.5Tb and 1x 1Tb both usb 2.0). Over the next few days I will attempt to reformat the 500 Gb and 1Tb portables, and the 1Tb desktop and see if that produces any results. Due to work constraints this may take a few days, so thank you for patience. Results will be posted as soon as possible. Current format of all the externals is default NTFS.
Another Option
There's another option in which would require multiple devices unfortunately due to the limited storage. Its a product I currently use myself called "Toshiba Duo 2 in 1.
http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/...flash-drive-toduo64grd?searchTerm=Toshina Duo
Unfortunately I am still working on my other drives. There's is a lot of moving data around (limited to USB 2.0 speeds), so please keep posted on my other externals.

[Q] Recommended External Storage?

I'm curious what external storage devices folks are using with their Fire TVs to avoid the low-memory warnings. Are you using large hard drives, or little thumb drives? If the latter, is 32GB enough?
Here's a link to something I was considering using for external storage: A tiny, low-profile USB 3 flash drive with 32GB of storage:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Ultra...Z43-032G-G46/dp/B00LLER2CS/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
IMHO without root you can not use any external media since USB mounting is not supported out-of-the-box.

I use a 32GB USB3 Stick which (on USB3) write about 60mb/s and reads about 80mb/s. I never testet it on USB2. In direct comparation of two firetvs running asphalt8 one from emmc one from USB the USB firetv is about a second later in the game which
is IMHO totaly fine.
How do you mount it? My non-rootable aTV does not recognize storage devices on USB.

Your device must be rooted.
Ah, OK so nothing new. Thought I´ve missed something.
I'm using an older Western Digital My Passport 320gb and mounted my internal data to it. I connected it to a small powered hub and also have a wireless mouse/keyboard dongle and wireless game controller connected to the hub. It works wonderfully. Only a slight delay compared to having data still on the FTV itself.
Your performance will always be limited to the transfer speeds of whatever external storage you're using. So it's not as easy as saying use HDD over USB Flash or vice versa. You can use either, just be sure that what you use has good transfer rates.

Exactly. I first tried a flash drive I had laying around. It turned my FTV into a slow crawl.

Good to know, as I'd read that USB sticks would offer lousy performance.

An excellent point. I did find a thumb drive, the Kingston Digital HyperX 3.0 Data Traveler, with what appears to be good transfer rates: 225MB/s read and 135MB/s write.
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digi...99462&sr=8-2&keywords=Kingston+HyperX+MAX+3.0
For around the same price, I could get this Toshiba Canvio portable drive, which would hold over ten times as much data, but I can't seem to pin down the exact read/write times. The stats say up to 480 Mb/s transfer rate, which does sound pretty good to me.

Another question I have is whether using a USB 3 drive would even matter since the Fire TV is only USB 2?

Most USB3 stick have faster controller and faster memory then the old USB2.0 versions. It is hard to find a fast USB2.0 Stick so you may be better of buying a USB3 stick and use it on the USB2.0 port of the aftv. (Which not mean that there are no slow USB3.0 sticks)
I can also recomment the sandisk extrem 32GB USB3.0 stick its even faster then the one in my tests but that should not matter on the USB2.0 port of the firetv.
