Pixel 2XL Randomly Not Receiving Texts From Some Contacts - Hit and Miss - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So recently I've had an issue with SMS/MMS on my 2XL, it seems some messages are just not getting through to my phone. About 2 months back I had an issue where about 90% of the time I would go to text one specific contact (wife), the messages app (stock app) would crash or hang for an incredibly long period of time. This persisted for a few weeks of many clear cache/revert to old version of app/etc. Finally I just backed up the SMS, cleared all the messages, and then restored them and that seemed to have fixed the problem.
Now, I am missing text messages (per verbal conversation) from a couple of contacts (mom, wife, best friend). It seems 90% of them are coming in but then randomly a few won't make it, which I only discover because the conversation doesn't make sense or I never get a reply and then when we speak in person or on the phone they say "no, I responded immediately, you didn't get the message". The only thing these 3 contacts have in common is that they are probably the most common people I text by far, and the thread of messages is quite long at this point. I also don't know if I am missing messages from other contacts or groups because the whole I don't know what I don't know thing. I also now am getting a few random crashes of the messaging app each day, again it seems when texting my wife.
Anyone else experience this? It's pretty frustrating - figuring it may be a time for a total factory reset and start over but if this is a known issue with a known fix, I would love to avoid the hassle of setting the phone up again.

before factory reset
force stop
delete all data
uninstall all updates
reinstall the app.
I had the same issue but it turned out to be carrier related.

Thanks for the response, was it the same issue with just random messages here and there not making it, but most coming through? Which carrier? I am on AT&T so I will reach out to them as well.

Jerky messages screen

Is it just me, or is the SMS screen a bit jerky and slow? I do have a 1000+ messages in there, but I can't imagine why it would make the scrolling so poor.

Actually it's almost 3 years worth of messages (transferred it from phone to phone).
Anyone else experiencing similar issues?
I had to factory reset my phone because of this a couple of days back. My contacts went blank and I could barely load the messages.
I can confirm this. Scrolling through sms is laggy and not very responsive. Even in threads with only less than 10 messages. So annoying...
Mines always been like that :-( grown to put up with it

doesn't froyo fix this?
If you let your message count get that high, then you're bound to encounter speed loss with the app. Try clearing your messages? Unless you need to know what happened 3 years ago?

Technically no. They should have dealt with performance issues with a high volume of text messages. I work within software development, and something like this would most certainly raise a red flag.
Hey sorry to raise a thread from the dead.
My Messages app now runs extremely slowly - can take 5-10 seconds to load an SMS thread and sometimes lags when i'm typing a reply.
Sounds like other people have experienced similar issues. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? It's almost certainly down to having a large number of messages in the thread (over 3,500 from this one contact for reasons i won't go into!) but surely with a modern smartphone it should be able to handle lots of text messages! My iPhone with 2 years worth of messages had no such issues.
One other issue - for no reason whatsoever it somtimes jumps me back up to the very top of the thread of texts meaning i either have to spend ages scrolling down or back up and reload it go get it to show the most recent ones. Anyone else experienced this?
I dont have any issues with lag etc but i second the jump-to-top issue.. its happening once a day for sure and im sooo sick of it! Anyone knows anything?

So just as an update on my woes - my phone on Friday randomly wiped every single one of my text messages. I reset the phone but nothing came back.
Great.
On the plus side, messages is now running very fast. But seriously, a smartphone that can't handle lots of text messages (which are surely microscopic in file size) is just pathetic.
A person who can't be bothered to store extra messages seperatly is pathetic. There are apps to store/back up messages and if you are constantly referencing 2 year old messages you need help.
Just my opinion though.
I realise your comments aren't targeted at me but perhaps rather than just insulting someone's choices you could actually be helpeful and tell them the names of the apps you talk of.
Not even going to bother addressing the insular comments.
Search "SMS backup" on the market. There are lots and lots of apps. "Backup to gmail" is one I saw that looks good. I personally don't news or use any backup solution for SMS.

Too many SMS now messages won't work!

Hi all,
Having looked around I don't see anyone with the same issue as mine with regards to SMS.
I just got a new Nexus 2 days ago, and got the 4.0.4 update by doing the clear cache thing. All good.
I installed SMSBackup+ and started to restore all my text messages. Now I have about 21,000. Honestly I have no idea how I have that many, its possible some are dupes or something, I really don't know. But basically I left it to restore them overnight and woke up this morning with all my messages restored. Lovely.
But now, I tried to send a text to someone and it just froze. I quit to the home screen, went to go back to the message app but it just sits with a black screen doing nothing.
I presume its got something to do with it trying to load all the messages for the first time or something like that but I'm a bit gutted that it can't handle it. My old Galaxy S could handle them all with ease.
Is this a known issue on the GNex or am I asking too much with the volume of SMSs??
I'm a bit gutted if I've bought this brand new state of the art phone and it can't handle what my two year old SGS could!
It might have been the case that a couple of messages were corrupt. Try clearing the sms data and restoring again but only blocks at a time. If that doesn't work the messaging app might have an issue since your now running ics.
This could be an issue that hasn't been explored as your not the average user. I for 1 limit my messages at 200 a contact.

Thanks RT, but its so slow/congested it won't let me delete them either! I tried by going into the message app and choosing delete threads.
It loads every time I reboot the phone but if I do anything on it at all, it just shows me a black screen.
On first load I can see all the messages, but if I go into one of them, even one that is only 2 threads long, it just freezes on me.
Any idea how I can delete the SMS data without going through the message app?
Or am I staring down the barrel at a factory reset? (this isn't the end of the world as I only got the phone yesterday and haven't really installed anything yet)
Right then,
So instead of trying to do something with the stock message app to delete the sms messages, I downloaded delete old messages app and ran that before loading up the stock message software.
I think the next time I restore them I will try and put the 200 cap on them like my SGS did (I thought this was a limitation of the phone not an actual setting that I could adjust! I presume I'll find it in the stock SMS settings somewhere?)
Thanks for the help RT.
I've had that issue since froyo. anytime I restore thousands of texts, the messaging app just hangs. On the rare occasion it'll come to life but for the most part unusable. only solution seems to be to restore a small portion of your texts or have a blank slate

Quit being so popular. Too many SMS.
I made a second label in my GMail I call SMS Backup and every few weeks I'll change my backed-up messages from SMS to the Backup label so when/if I wipe and restore, it doesn't pull in all my messages. If I need anything, I can easily search for it.

To delete your messages / settings go into the sms app under Settings-Apps and clear all your data.
Yes you find the sms limit setting in the general setting within the sms app.

[Q] Why is Hangouts seriously lagging?

Since day 1 there have been occasional problems with my Hangouts messaging (not SMS enabled)...sometimes it takes 7-10 minutes before a message comes through. Its weird because its not all the time...maybe every few days or so. My wife is even getting mad at me because she thinks I'm ignoring her. I flashed a new ROM hoping the problem would go away, but the problem continues whether stock or non. Only hangouts seems to be affected...everything else with the phone seems fine. I am about to start looking at 3rd party apps, but I prefer to stick with google since it integrates well into gmail and keeps chat history tied to google acct. Anyone else having this problem? It took me a while before I even noticed it was a problem tho...mostly thanks to the wife.
I don't use Hangouts, so I'm not sure of it's a common issue. That being said, have you tried the stock Messages app? It works flawlessly for me...

Use hangouts a ton with both family and business both on my phone and in chrome browsers on desktops. No real lag except when I am using the browser and then move to the phone, but as soon as it sees me using the phone it is the same. Don't use it for SMS.
Forgot to mention this only started happening with my Gnote3. I have been using Hangouts exclusively for a long time and ALWAYS worked flawlessly with my other Androids. I've never seen a problem until I bought the Gnote3.
I tried using that but the lag was unbearable.

I am suffering from the same issues & I don't want to use a separate app for sms. I live having it all in one app. Also, I only have this problem on tw roms.

Its just the app man. Nothing you can do, especially in busy rooms its terrible
Hangouts stopped working altogether for me. I had to switch back to Google Voice just to get texts.
Hangouts is goofy, sometimes it won't notify of new messages when they're received, sometimes it doesn't receive them at all and sometimes its delayed. I'll be talking to my girlfriend via hangouts on my PC via a wired connection and sometimes the message will come in on my phone at the same time, 30 seconds later a few minutes later, or not at all until I refresh the conversation.

If I am actively chatting with someone on my PC responses don't show actively on my phone unless I look for them. If I stop responding on the PC, the phone starts to announce new messages. It think this is a feature.

I thought that too, but it seems to do it whenever it likes. Prime example: I've been chatting with my girlfriend on my phone and the screen is off, I have gmail open in Chrome but it's not the active tab. She sends me a message and both my phone and my pc notify me of a new message at the same time.

Problems with Messages in Official Pie

On the official 9.0 stock release, and over the past few days I've started having issues with Android Messages randomly coming up with force close messages. It also will randomly not send messages and give me the "retry" error, and not download other MMS messages until I go in and hit the download button.
I haven't flashed anything new or changed any APN settings. I also have tried clearing Data & Cache for Android Messages and that didn't fix it either.
Anyone else having issues, or have any ideas on how to fix this?

I would try doing a data factory reset. Hopefully that fixes your issue...
Did you do an OTA update to Pie by chance from Oreo?
I have been having the same issue. It will "freeze" up and the messages sent out are delayed. Everything seems to work still but the app lags up and gives me the Force Close message.

I have also been seeing these messages. The most common and annoying for me is that messages don't send right away at times. And almost seems like you have to wait inside Messages until the text is fully sent before leaving or you aren't guaranteed it will go thru. Most concerning is that you won't really be notified that a text didn't go thru until you go back to that particular thread in Messages. I have also experienced the App Not Responding - Wait, Force Close, etc...which I honestly had never seen before in Messages until the PIE update (I did a Full Factory Flash while saving data). The text messages not being sent has bitten me twice on time sensitive messages I was trying to send and which I assumed went through.
I have been having this issue for months, pre-Pie. Upon downloading Pie (OTA) and the Messages issue not being fixed, I tried Textra. I stopped getting the error in Messages, but Textra then worked its way up to 17GB of hard drive storage and was consistently the largest battery hog on my phone (shouldn't be more than 3-4GB based on what it required before installing Textra) so Textra had to go. I would love to know if anyone figures out how to get Messages working normally again.
I also am having all of these problems with Android Pie on my Pixel XL on Verizon. Seems like whenever I exit out of the messages app when I send a message, it ends up not sending. Could that be because of the new battery optimization feature where more apps are being "shut off" in the background more than they used to? And has anyone had luck fixing this issue by doing a factory reset?

Why not just use a different messaging app? I use Pulse, have been for a year now. It stores not only your SMS but MMS automatically, and like Google's messaging app has an extension to work with your browser on your PC.
Problem still exists
Exact same issue here. I was wondering if it was the operating system or Verizon.

Android Messages duplicate texts bug

I don't know if this is Pixel 2 specific, but it keeps happening on my Pixel 2 XL, and I can't find anything online about it happening to anyone else. If this is better off in another forum, let me know.
When I'm using messages.android.com] along with the Messages app for texting, it will sometimes (once or twice a day) send duplicate messages, but delayed by a few minutes or hours, and not always just the previous message I sent. It's very inconsistent and I can't find a pattern to it. It's been happening to me for at least a month.
I've tried:
* different laptops and browsers
* clearing storage to force the app to have a fresh start
* settings -> messages for web -> sign out of all computers
Example: this morning I sent a few texts from my phone, then a little later I logged on to messages.android.com, and it resent one of my texts from last night.
The only thing I notice is that it's always to a group chat, it never happens with just a single person.
Any suggestions or ideas would be great, thanks in advance.

Nothing concrete. I upgraded to version 4 a couple of days ago and it hasn't happened yet. I stress 'yet' because it seems to be pretty spotty on when it happens and what triggers it.
Did you get this resolved?

I disabled automatic resending in chat features and it seems to have resolved it for me. It's only been a day, so time will tell.
