Very disappointed with audio. What are my options - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hey guys.
I have a Pixel 2 XL and have had it for about 6 months now.
Overall I am pretty disappointed with the audio out of the phone. I am using my Ultimate Ears TF10 through a Dragonfly Black and it sounds much worse than just the TF10s through my iPhone 6s (not using the dragonfly)
I can see a few options here and seeking some feedback.
1. Root the phone (I have read on here some custom ROMs will give better gains over USB C.
2. Get a pair of Bluetooth headphones (I don't really want to do this since I already have a good set of IEMs. Also are there any restrictions with Bluetooth such as compression etc.
3. Sell the phone and go get an LG v30 with its quad DAC.
Overall I'm pretty happy with the phone but the audio is very disappointing and I spend a few hours commuting today so it's a real let down.
Let me know what everyone thinks
Thanks guys

Root using Magisk and install the following modules.
Viper4Android FX Materialized
Ainur Sauron
Audio Compatibility Patch
Audio Modification Library
Those four modules should improve the sound quality.

I am surprised you are having such a bad expierience.
The USB only audio (no headset jack) advantage is that you can use better DAC/Amps than on a regular smartphone.
My measurements of the various ones out there all show pretty decent specs (with some exceptions).
The stock Google dongle is excellent (it's a custom Realtec chip), I am testing the new one this weekend. Sure, using my gain control app will get you a bit cleaner tracing but whether that's audible or not, hard to say.
Apt X bluetooth with the Mee BT adapter is also very good.
I wonder if perhaps your transducer(s) in the headphone/IEM aren't working properly. That happened to me a couple of years ago with my SE846 and it drove me nuts until I figured it out.
Another thing to check: What source are you listening to? Your own rips (and what player), Spotify, G music etc? Let me know and we can go from there, as the problems vary between each one. Do you use the on board equalizer or any equalizer? If so what gains, bands?

I just tested the new dongle and re evaluated the USB audio in Pie - the implementation is substantially better and the gains are now properly optimized.
So, I don't think your issue is a Dac dongle problem, unless it is defective.

Thanks for the help so far guys.
Source is Spotify 320 kbps.
I don't think it's the headphones as it sounds fine when I plug back into my iPhone.
I might do some more testing this afternoon when I get home as my wife has the same phone.
I also have a pair of MEE X7 Bluetooth earphones and I am more impressed with these via Bluetooth (yes they are boomy but I can tell that the Bluetooth dac isn't being restricted)
I'll fill in once I have tested on my wife's phone tonight

I don't exactly advertise it. ?

I'm running those same audio mods and have no complaints with sound... Are you sure you have everything enabled in magisk property? Is V4A showing "processing =yes" when you are playing music?

My P2XL is not rooted and on Pie.
The only thing I've really missed, so far, is Dolby Atmos.
Since it's not available for Pie, I've been holding off rooting.
While searching for an audio booster, I found this app. Believe it, or not, it sounds almost as good as Dolby Atmos. I'm still tweaking it.

Terrible Audio Playback

Have any of you experienced terrible audio quality (Tinny sound-sorta like the treble is too high) and a very slight hiss when listening to music on the headphones? Ordered 2 phones from AT and T and both of them have the same issue. I am still debating whether this is an issue or is just the way the phone is.
I had a Tmobile G2 previously and the audio quality when listening to Pandora and other internet radio apps was simply awesome. This is especially disturbing to me as I am absolutely thrilled with the phone in other aspects. Based on your responses I will decide if I want to return the phone to get a replacement or simply get the HTC One X.
FYI I have the AT and T Samsung Galaxy S3 with stock ROM from AT and T.

Thanks Gberg. I tried the equalizer app, didnt do too much to alleviate the issue. I will be trying a friends phone to see if it has the same issue to decide.
I checked a friends S3 and found pretty much the same results. It is very much possible the audio playback sound quality is not as good as some of the other phones.
Will be trying a more expensive headset.
Also, Can anyone let me know if rooting the phone and installing a custom rom would make any difference to the sound quality?

Yes...other roms can help/hurt audio as they replace/tweak audio libraries. Cyanogen Mod includes a DSP app. Another thing i have done that helps a lot is to install awesome beats. check the apps and themes forum for installation instructions...of course you must have root.
Hope this helps. Oh BTW..i'm using the Bose MIE2's. While i'm not a huge Bose fan generally....I have found them to be quite satisfactory with equalization.
Try equalizing with DSPManager I know it comes with Gapps on jelly bean it features bass boost and like I said before equalizer that may help or it could just be the device/defected.

Sound quality / chip

Hey guys,
maybe some of u can help me.
Im interested in the sound/audio/music quality of the OP3 in compination with headphones.
I know the quality of a Samsung S2 and S4 (both not with Wolfson chip) and i know the S3 and S5 have a variety with a Wolfson chip (never heared them).
Many people say they can hear a different between them.
Maybe some of you know the difference between them and the OP3? Or can compare?
I think about buying a OP3 and i'm really interested in the sound quality with headphones.
Thanks for any answeres and sry for my english
My OnePlus 3 arrived today and I think the quality with headphones is good. Can't hear any difference between my old Nexus 5 and the OP3 both sound good

I believe the audio solution is the same as for all SD820 processors. Built-in 24bit 96khz support. Nothing out of the ordinary and not high-end but good enough for Spotify Premium and stored Flacs etc.
For Premium Audio you are better off adding an outboard DAC such as from Audioquest (Dragonfly) or Meridian Explorer. Built-in ad-hoc sound processors are almost always a compromise.
A few manufacturer, LG and HTC spring to mind, have better, separate built in DAC's and amplifiers which may suit you better if you don't want to shell out for separate ones.
Having said all this, I use an S7Edge (Exynos version) which, like the Snapdragon uses propriatory decoding and I am happy with it for music on the move. (I also use a full Cyrus home system and Grado Headphones for indoor listening to give some perspective).
The headphone quality w/ Bose QC25 is good and a LOT better than the 6P (stock) in my opinion. It still doesn't beat the iPhone 6s+ in loudness and overall sound quality using Spotify or Apple Music. For most people it's good enough and for others Viper should help a ton but for audiophiles and stock out of the box, it's not going to cut it.

I read that in order to install Viper one has to:
"Setup your Device
For Samsung devices,
1. Try install V4A as user app instead of system app if the latter failed doesn’t work.
2. Use Normal Mode and select V4A FX in Settings>Sound>Music Effects.
3. If don’t work, use another player rather than Samsung stock Music player.
——————–
1. ROOT your device.
2. Install busybox if doesn’t come with root.
3. Modify build.prop (Thanks [email protected])
a. Open up /system/build.prop in text editor using any file explorer with root access.
b. Change the line (If you can’t find these lines, skip this step.)
– “Ipa.decode=true” to “lpa.decode=false”
– “tunnel.decode=true” to “tunnel.decode=false”
– “lpa.use-stagefright=true” to “lpa.use-stagefright=false”"
do you know of any other good app to improve the audio quality of the op3 not needing to the root trick?
I find op3 audio rather flat.
Thanks
Could somebody please check if the google play music app offers you the equalizer option in its settings menu? My LG G4 does not and it is one of the (many) things I hate about it

Viper is by far ur best bet. Using it myself and it improved the sound a lot. Everything else would just be an equalizer since ab adequate driver can't be installed without root.

it does indeed! Only way right now I can stand the poor audio quality... Hopefully V4A will work soon on OP3...
I bet some here confuse "audio quality" with "loud" or/and "much bass *LOL*
The audio quality on this device (headphone jack) IS very good, period.
If you want louder signal (and ruin your ears) or more bass (for your lame nts-nts-nts music), install V4A or something like that...

Agree, limitations are hardware based and no player will improve that. For audiophiles ... use an outboard dac/headphone amplifier.

Make the OnePlus 3 apt-x compatible

Hello !
I have a good apt-x pair of headphones and an apt-x compatible phone for the time being. I thought about buying the OP3(T) but I'd like not to loose this funtionality.
That's why I thougt I could buy an apt-x transmitter and plug it to the jack, in order to have apt-x !
What if i also buy an external DAC and plug the transmitter to it ? Would it work, does it make sense?
So overall, do you think it is a good option to do like that ? Do you have something better ? Or do you think that what I am saying is completely dumb ?
Thanks !
Does apt-x make such a difference that it is worth the effort?

Imo it doesn't if all you do is audio listening. But then again, I reverted back to wired cause even aptx still sucks.
On the other hand, latency response is noticeably better, so in those quite rare instances where I want to watch a movie (from tv mostly) via bt, aptx helps. I mean, without aptx, same content would be unwatchable due to audio lag.

Ah okay, never thought about the latency of bt cause whenever i watch a movie over external speakers i just use aux since the speakers are right next to the tv.
Eventually, I'm working on an apt-x support for a while without success... A lot of phones provide apt-x functionality without hw support.. It's a sw solution, but I didn't find the method to load the closed source codec like BlueZ. If I found working libraries from other phone, I'll let you know...
I swapped from my Xperia Z2 (with apt-x) to my Oneplus 3 and the only device I have that was capable of receiving apt-x Bluetooth audio is my car receiver. I noticed no difference.
Maybe car audio is a poor test because, despite my custom in-car setup with high quality receiver, amp and speakers, the car is very noisy, so some differences are lost to exhuast/wind/tyre/road noise.

Well, to be honest, if you have a great pair of headphones (not necessarily ultra high end, just mid-high headphones) that are compatible, you can hear the difference, it's a question of details imo. And low latency is definitely the first thing you notice. But no matter for music obviously. Is it a deal breaker? Well, I'm asking myself, I might reconsider the Apt-x necessity.

V30 Quad DAC Root Bybass fix

Ive been playing about with this phone now and making a rom and in my expericance so far and from somthing @ChazzMatt said that I realized something was not quite right and it happened after i flashed a new 10c kdz and did the normal thing twrp + Magisk + Viper that i found the Quad DAC to not be switching on. Volume at 50 is nowhere near what i should be with it on compared to off. Ive found something in the build prop but im not sure if its just a coincence or this is actually doing something but 2 things might be the cause of the DAC not switching on.
1. Persist.audio.dmb_hifidac = true
2.Persist.audio.hifi_dac = off
Ive found that playing with these options and rebooting causes the DAC to switch on again. Maybe someone else can confirm exactly which of these keeps it working.
In custom CM/LOS ROMs with the 2016 ZTE Axon 7, which also has a quad DAC, devs could not use the quad DAC for audio processing. They had to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon audio processor -- as ZTE would not release proprietary source code for their award-winning quad DAC.
I believe stock based custom ROMs still had access -- as those were just debloated, tweaked ZTE firmware.
(Last time I checked was a few months ago, so if devs overcame that hurdle, then good for them. I only know the situation last time I looked.)
I do not know about the LG V20 custom ROMs, either stock-based or CM/LOS. LG V20 of course also has quad DAC. I've not researched. Maybe someone coming from V20 can tell us, either a dev or a user?
It's just the quad DAC on this phone is one of the main selling points, so you want to make sure it's being used if possible... Your ROM is stock based, but LG does have limits in place. For instance, it checks for impedance. And there's things you don't want to break.

Can confirm. After last twrp session updating to magisk 15 killed the quaddac.
Setting the values as follows and rebooting brought it back.
persist.audio.dmb_hifidac
true
persist.audio.hifi_dac
ON

Ok that's strange as I had it working on different settings.
Having just replaced my v30 twice. USB port broke on 1st phone then a vertical line was on the 2nd one I got. I'm now on my 3rd phone with your settings but nothing happened till I switched on viper master power and rebooted. There's some weird impedance thing going on with it.

Yeah it's strange. Everything worked last time with old magisk (I had to go back to stock and reflash twrp after updating to magisk 15 got me a bootloop)
It seems odd that rooting changes such things in build.prop
I woke up this morning and plugged my phone into my speakers and then later in my headphones I noticed the dac not coming on despite not rebooting since the last time it worked. So I actually switched off the dac and kept plugging in the headphones until I noticed a difference in the sound and then the dac just came on. No reboot needed again.

It's very strange. I noticed a short lag in sound when I tried to switch on/off dac and settings. As if it was about to change something but very delayed. Seemed like something was trying to do something but got stuck and never turned on settings or dac.
That was before I changed build.prop. After that all worked well. Like said before.
Could be that when i played around little more it would have switched on without changing build.prop. But did not have time to test because i was commuting.

What headphones do you have? I think it is to do with this. I just bought the Sennheiser HD630VB's which are only 23ohms. I also have the Momentum 2.0 over ears and the HD650s but ive only tried with the 630s and i suspect it needs 50ohms to really switch on DAC which in turn having Viper on would cause the checker to trick itself into thinking im running a higher impedance set of headphones so i need the dac on.

so i've looked into it. my HP have 32 and 16 Ohm impedance.
they trigger the dac on when i connect them (after i changed the build.prop. it never stopped working for me again)
judging from this thread connecting higher impedance HP will trigger higher power output modes, but the dac is always on in the same way
If somebody was thinking battery test on youtube video streaming, i did that and got 8h 2min sot. Full brightness and volume.

Don't use that then. Instead use this:
Whiskeyomega's V30 Sound Mods
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/themes/whiskeyomegas-v30-sound-mods-t3757115
What LG has done as made a bad job of the mixer_paths_tavil.xml which includes references a ES9018 which was never put in the phone or any phone AFAIK.
But what I have just noticed is if you are using a set of low impedance headphones, It goes through to the low power sound device chip but keeps the HIFI DAC switch working so the EQ can still work. Unless you make it think you are running a different type of headset which it calls "Advanced" which is high impedance then it runs to the decent DAC and there are no problems.
I have also noticed in all the mixer_paths_tavil.xml from around the world markets that there are differences in settings which should be the same. Which is what could account for some people saying Low Impedance still runs through the same decent DAC and some people saying it doesnt. Either way mixer_paths_tavil.xml is a maze of old and incorrect information.
So with that in mind. I'd Like to share the results of my work with more always coming.

Nope, no lightning ports here. Bluetooth or USB-C
I would not recommend any AAC only headphones to Android. Only Apple music can use AAC codec. Also there is no value for money at all. For same or less money you have much better headphones with Aptx codec and can enjoy much better sound quality (eg via Tidal HiFi)

From what I've read you can't do it on Android but if you connect them to an iOS device you can change the settings and they will work on android as well.
I bought a pair of Airpods specifically for my Pixel 2xl and have had zero problems with them. I do have an iPad that I used to set up gestures and I use AssistantTrigger to add a gesture for launching Assistant, which works quite well. You may be able to set the gesture commands from that app now, even without an iPhone/iPad. From all the reviews and real world useage I saw, they were just the best quality and bang for my buck. I use them every day and like I mentioned before, have had no problems with them.
Edit: after looking at the AssistantTrigger app, I was wrong, I don't think you can set up the commands from the app.
