Can you wirelessly charge with a case on? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Is it possible to put a case on the Pixel 3 XL and still use wireless charging? Will only certain cases work? None?
Thanks.

Probably depends on the case. Even on the Google website it shows one charging on the stand with a case (fabric on). Looking at Spigen's site some of them say clearly they support wireless charging while it's omitted for others...

Depends on the case. The ones that can will say so. For example some of the Spigens can and it says so. Others say nothing about it and they can't.

Yes you definitely can as long as there isn't anything blocking the connection through the case like a magnet. Even externally using a pop sockets you can't wireless charger. So the answer is yes it'll work through mostly anything and any case unless there is an object in between

During the Google presentation they said you can charge even with a case

Good to know. Thanks for the replies.

I have never had an issue wirelessly charging with a case on. With any phone and even using an external wireless charger adapter

Charging and charging well are two different things. As an example my Note 8 took forever to charge with the leather case on and had to be set on the charger just exactly right to charge at all. Case off and you could just toss it on the pad and it worked. Thick leather has been the worst in my experience, TPU seems to have little effect if any over charging sans case. In the latter case those were all lightweight close fitting cases, might be different with the thicker full protection style cases like a defender. Haven't tried any other materials with wireless charging.

I went with the "all around" protection and go the Otterbox Defender case... it unfortunately doesn't work well with the Pixel Stand.. even with the rubber outter shell off it doesn't charge consistantly. It will charge, then stop... I'm getting a Spigen Neo Hybrid which..is supposed to work with Wireless charging.

Most chargers require the case to be <=4mm to charge wirelessly.

I tried the Pixel Stand with my P3XL while the case was on (Otterbox Defender) and have not noticed any issues. Yet...

Does the wireless charging door fit in the otterbox?

Topic

Yes, it does fit. That being said it is a very tight fit, one poster here removed the foam from the back of the Otterbox case, I did not and the case still fit.
I have also purchased the PT defender case from Bestbuy and it fits as well, again a very tight fit.
I was really worried about it charging through the cases, but it does without any issues.
Awesome! Thanks for your response!

There any other good cases that will fit with the wireless charging door?
I have the case/holster combo from Verizon and the wireless charger and battery cover. The case I have does not work with the wireless charger back. It sucks I have to change the back cover everytime I want to charge the phone.

Doubt it. Wouldn't a case on that door affect how well it works?

The wireless charging door seems like a extended battery size? Is their a different case that bestbuy sells besides the PT Platinum? I can't find the defender you are referring too

The charging door is bigger than the stock door, but is still smaller than the extended battery door.
Here is the SKU 2299396 for the platinum Best Buy case.
I had to do my first battery pull since using the BB case and I don't recommend using this case with the wireless battery door. Like I said it was a tight fit putting the case on, out was almost impossible taking the case off!.
The Otterbox Defender is a tight fit, but can be removed fairly easily.
The Best Buy Platinum case is much to difficult to remove to recommend it for use with the wireless charging door.
So the Otterbox's plastic and rubber doesn't affect the wireless charging at all? Any idea what the range on the wireless charger is? Also, what wireless charging system are you using?

When using the Otterbox case I had no issues when charging. I didn't remove the foam, but like I said previously it was a very tight fit.
I have no idea on range of the charger, and i'm using the LG Verizon pad.
my black silicon verizon case fit fine over the wireless charging door, it created some gaps and such around the kickstand, but it worked and charged fine

So are the wireless battery doors and mats interchangeable or do you have to be sure you use the correct brand mat for your door? Just wondering because if the doors/backs are mat specific then I probably won't do it as you won't be able to use the LG Verizon pad with anything other than a phone.

Don't think it's specific to the LG Verizon charger, I just purchased it as I got the wireless battery door free (Aug. Verizon promotion)
Pretty sure that I read here (XDA Forums) that the powermat would work as well, I would search the forums before going and buying the powermat charger.

Powermat won't work as it uses a different charging technology. You can use the energizer QI charging matt though, that will work.

Spigen Slim Armor Case with QI Charging?

Has anyone tried QI charging through the Spigen Slim Armor case? I got an aftermarket back cover with the Qi sticker on my VZW G3 but I'm concerned that the case's non TPU back will interfere with wireless charging. According to the QI spec it should be okay but who knows.
Anyone have success setting up wireless charging through the Spigen Slim Armor case? If so, what charger did you use?
I read a post that someone said it's working but on slow charge. I'm waiting for my charger to show up then I can confirm.
Just received my charger. It does indeed charge but I did get the "Charging Slowly" message. Doesn't seem much slower than plugging it in though. Just a matter of minutes and it's already gone up two percentage points. So I feel an overnight charge will be plenty to charge a dead battery, which was my main concern.
I bought this charger...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Qi-Wireless...l_Phone_PDA_Chargers&var=&hash=item486b124eff
I'm wondering if brand of charger will make a difference in output or signal strength to the phone. I have it plugged into a 5-port Anker 40W USB charger hub.
Going to test to see if it charges with the screen on as well.
So even though I got the slow charging message it looks like it's charging about 10% every 20 minutes or so.
Seems good to me! That's with my Spigen Slim Armor case installed and screen off.
Tried it with the SLIM ARMOR and the original Charger WCD-100 from LG
Not working at all.
I think the case is much to thick to connect.
Try a different charger. Mine works great.

Ive got a "slim armour " case from dhgate and a itian charger aand it works fine without and slow charging problems ?
I order today itian a6. When i try i will tell here how it is. I use slimpack case.
I posted this yesterday in the VZW Accessories thread, but figured it may help some folks here as well.
Figured I'd post my Qi setup in my car for anyone else looking for a similar solution.
I'm using these products:
iOttie Qi Car Mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
OEM Qi compatible back cover: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Spigen Slim Armor Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16875934268
Wireless charging works perfectly in the car, and that is with the Slim Armor case on. The mount is well made and has a great design. It's a bit pricey (though currently on sale for under $40) but I'm very satisfied given the quality and functionality. I was a bit wary buying the back cover from a generic merchant in China, but it shipped relatively quickly (about 2 weeks) and works perfectly, NFC included. Hope this helps someone.

Will wireless charging work with Otterbox Defender case?

Has anyone ever had experience with Samsung smartphones charging wirelessly through Defender's thicker casing?
I always had to find the sweet spot with my Note 7 and much thinner cases on last year's Samsung fast wireless charger in order for it to work.
Did you email and ask them?
NM, I wrote them and asked them.
When I get a response, I'll post it.
I'm not getting this case.

I think hearing back from Otterbox would possibly be a more prudent answer.
Unless Otterbox has included some type of conductive feature in the layers between.........
I am trying to be optimistic.
Hopefully the $20 cost difference is indicative of more coils since charging speed is same between Samsung's 2016 vs 2017 models
I heard back from Otterbox:
Thank you for your e-mail. Good news, I do show that it does work with wireless charging. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Have a great day!

If worked with my S7 defender case as Well as my lifeproof case. I got my s8+ defender in last week, it feels thinner than my s7 defender. I'll have to test when it gets here, when it ships.

I know it works with the strada case, not sure about the defender. Look up if the S7 defender case could wirelessly charge, that should give you a hint.

Considering I asked Otterbox specifically about the Defender case AND posted their positive response that wireless charging WILL work with this case, not sure what the mystery or hoping is if the company themselves confirmed it will work.

Wireless charging works with ALL Otterbox cases.
Considering BIG companies like SAMSUNG never misconstrue the facts to sell more products............
Hint. Hint.
NOTE 7 battery fiasco.
Why would a smaller company like Otterbox?

big companies like samsung can ride out the fallout financially... smaller companies like otterbox probably don't want to have to pay for all the returns and the PR backlash.

there was 1 case that was rated to work with wireless charging (I Think it was otterbox) that i saw while looking at the youtube reviews, and yes it did work wih wireless charging, after picking it up and putting it down like 3-4x because it was such a weak connection that it was really hard to get it just right.
I didnt see your comment earlier, but I'd still beware of that, the defender case is thicker than usual.
FYI, S8+ Defender case WILL NOT work in upright position with the wireless charger. I've tried two of them and neither worked. Works fine laying flat, but once it it put in the upright position it will start charging for about 5 seconds and stop. Take off the rubber outer case and it works fine. Seems like there's too much padding at the bottom

Ya, I think I'm going to return them. I've gotten in contact with them on social media and they say all their cases have been tested and it DOES work wirelessly when laid flat. I think they just didn't test this particular scenario. Sad, because otherwise I really like this case.
I just tried my defender with the Samsung wireless charger stand and mine worked standing up.
I have defender on S8+ and charges fine on my spigen upright charger. Now when it comes to my iottie wireless car charger/mount it's hit or miss. The home charger has 3 coils and is stationary but the iottie has one and lots of vibration from car.
Anyone know of a good QI kit that would fit between the polycarbonate and TPU of the otterbox so my car charger would also work. Or would attaching a QI receiver to my s8+ damage the phone since it already has QI built in?
Here's my experience with it. I do have the 8+ and a defender case. Without the case I can just plop my phone anywhere in the upright (samsung dual coil) wireless pad and it will start charging. With the case on I have to search a little for the sweet spot. Hope that helps.

Otterbox Defender and Galaxy Buds using Powershare

Can someone please try using the Otterbox Defender case using Wireless Powershare with the Galaxy Buds and please tell me if it works. I have the Defender already but waiting on my Galaxy Buds..
Thank you!
I'd imagine if the defender can wireless charge, then the buds should work also
I have a case that is significantly thinner than the otterbox. My Gear S3 frontier wouldn't charge. Took my case off and it works.
Just because a wireless charge can reach through a case doesn't mean the output on the 10+ is as strong.
Thanks for the replies...
I traded in my Defender for the Defender Pro because the back seems flatter and I was able to charge my Galaxy S9+ (that has a Otherbox that I took off to test) and it was able to wireless Powershare.. I'm guessing the buds might work too.. I'll find out when the buds come in..

I found it interesting that my bare s10+ can charge a iPhone x in Pelican Voyager case which has a gap in between 2 devices.
I also can charge the GalaxyBud with Otterbox Defender but without the rubber outsole.

It should work since both, the S10 and Digiflavor, use the Qi standard.
It won't charge anything with the Defender. That's what I'm currently using and it won't charge my watch or my galaxy buds. It barely wirelessly charges itself with my Duo charger. Sometimes it charges other times a toast notification pops up telling me to take the case off

Case compatibility with wireless charging?

I'm partial to my current phone's case, Spigen Tough Armor, with its kickstand and all, and they have a version for the Pixel 5. However, I'm worried its thickness might cause issues with wireless charging. It's not as bulky as some Otterboxes and such but it's been a while since I've had wireless charging so I'm not up with the state of things. How finnicky is wireless charging these days? Yes still, or not so much?
Wireless charging doesn't work through metal, afaik. Other than that, google it and let us know the results.
They claim it works with wireless charging. It did with my 3XL, so I ordered it for the 5.
The Pixel 5 specs are 4mm charging distance.

As long as you don't use a metal case it will work but it will be less efficient with the case. Wireless charging is already very inefficient (and therefore bad for battery life) as it is.

I'm wondering if it really is a cutout in the back or if the charging coil is just on the outside of the phone but under the "bio-resin" coating. There would still have to be some small cutout to get a cable through but it would help structurally integrity by not needing as big of a hole.
I'm very curious to see a tear down video.

A cover up !
______
I use both the Unicorn Beetle and the Kezi-Home and if I had to choose it would be the latter simply because I really don't like the front cover on the former and can be 'damaged' or worn if removed often. They are both outstanding and the kickstand on the Beetle is perfection to my mind and only wish I could fit them inside one another . I don't experience any wireless charging issues with either case on, though is perhaps due to the 25,000MA bank I use.
As long as the case isn't metal, it shouldn't cause a problem with wireless charging. There -may- be a slight drop in power transfer (longer charging times) if the case is particularly thick, as wireless charging is designed with the intent for the phone to be in direct contact with the charging pad, but it shouldn't be a significant problem.
