Dark Theme? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Stock android still doesn't have a dark theme? Found it in the options but doesn't seem to do anything. The dialer and settings still have a white background. We've got OLED panels with true black. Think Google will ever get around to it? Who wants to stare at a bright white light?

Yes same here. Why does Google have the option when it doesn't work lol

Google is rolling out dark theme on a per app basis. They have it for YouTube and Android Messages now. Apparently it's coming to Google Phone soon (Dialer and contacts). Dark theme definitely makes the notch stand out less.

Hope they do the phone and settings soon.

Why isn't the notification bar black to? wouldn't that help also?
yeah. thanks going to work on it now
It is my understanding that with a LCD screen that is back-light (such as your phone, and any LCD screen that I am aware of) black is harder on the battery because it has to block the most light from passing through the film. Therefore, you are having the opposite effect you desire, white would be the most efficient (or some other bright color) as it has to use less energy to darken the screen and can allow more of the back light to shine through. But I don't know everything...
i see...... i will create an all white theme for you guys than
But black looks better! My phone is decked out in black and blue, white would be god-awful to look at (even the stock grey is obnoxious). So, I say, continue on your quest for a black based theme, but instead of calling it energy efficient, just call it black.
Check this article out for some details to the power usage differences between CRT's and LCD's.
its funny... i have an all black background some apps and i turn my brightness all the way down to have it as dark as possible... mind you i have a white g1... haha

Because most people do not find the blinding white background pleasing...also black backgrounds save battery using less display power.

maybe i just have some messed up eyes lol....its easier to turn the brightness down and set a dark wallpaper...without the negative photo look.

Most apps do not display the wallpaper, so things like inverted Hangouts, Gmail, Google Now, Twitter, Facebook are popular sought after apps.

Google Feed - Upcoming Black background

Starting today the "Upcoming" (at least that's what it was called) section of the Google Feed where you get stock prices, upcoming flights, etc now has a black(it's actually black not the dark gray you get in "dark mode") background for each card but still a white background for the main screen.
It looks awful and I don't see a way to turn it off.
Turn off Night Mode and/or dark theme. Just tested it and it changed the cards back to white. Looks like Assistant is getting a dark mode soon...

That sucks. I like the dark theme. I just don't like that it isn't consistent. All dark would be great. All white would be fine. The mix of the black (not even the same color as the right of the dark theme in the OS and other apps) and white looks AWFUL.
I'm sure they'll make the Assistant page look more like the Feed page. I feel like the black on white background is incomplete for sure.

Yeah, I like the dark Feed page. I hope they fix it soon to make it consistent. It's also off that they didn't even pick the same dark color. On the Feed it's a dark gray. On the other page it's black.
New options in the feed to view more or less of some news. Looks interesting. Never used the app, always use it by sliding left so I've full dark theme mode on.
I believe this only shows up if you're on the beta version, so they're still just testing
Not on beta here. As long as dark mode / night mode is on, you get the dark tiles in the Assistant.

Question AMOLED Black theme?

Is there a way to get the settings menu, quick settings, notification panel pure black and not grey? Seems whichever wallpaper I set (even solid black) it's not adhering to it...
Might have to wait until substratum can be used if not!
The irony of their colour scheme was not lost on me. I think they did this for a bit of retro feel so it looks like an LCD panel.
Come on Google, I know your designers are probably just 12 years old, but surely there are still some older people there that remember the light bleed issues of LCD displays of old, and that OLED was sold on being able to produce real blacks.
I just want pure black
Oh well, root will soon be amongst us I'm sure
I'm trying to find a wallpaper that is as black as possible, so the system themes it accordingly. But also one that doesn't have a tint to everything... Any recommendations? I just want notification panel etc to be black if possible but also for buttons ect to be a plain colour without a warm'ish tint to them...especially text, like I want that to be white whereas seems the system is adding a tint?

Question any way to theme instagram so it's more dark than black? rooted.

used to be able to do this a few android versions ago with substratum. there was a theme called aosp dark which was great. I find the stock instagram dark mode hard on the eyes it's so black. i've trawled around looking at current substratum themes but nothing so far. my p6p is rooted.
Check out this post
Substratum + Swift Dark Theme (same colour as other Google apps when using dark mode). See screenshot.
I use this to theme Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Google Files app ... now at least 95% of my apps have the same 'dark' colour and are 'consistent' in terms of UI color.
I have also set debug.hwui.force_dark=true at boot time to turn a few light apps into dark.
Only exception is strava ... white is king for strava.

thank you so much for this! I had given up hope of finding a solution. makes a huge difference.
edit: were you able to get that theme to work for google maps? not working here at the moment. really annoying that the stock dark theme also turns the map dark.
