Samsung's new AOD - Google Pixel 3 XL Themes, Apps, and Mods

Is it going to be possible to get our always on display to work like Samsung's one for pie. I think that would be a great compromise to not having an LED. The notifications by color is a great idea.

Just got one ui beta on my note 8 and loving the new aod. Itd be nice to have on 3xl

Pixel XL 2 Vs Galaxy S9+

Well I will have my S9+ on Monday (will it dethrone my pixel as my daily?) Will take some effort as this device is fantastic :good:
So with that said if anyone might be interested outwith review videos & looking for the user comparison then I'm in a position to compare the two.
My obvious main focus (pardon the pun) is to test the camera's and see how they compare.
But open to suggestions as to what else you might like to see?
No I'm not going to drop test or set it on fire
I have a feeling that it will be in last place rotation with my 5T, iPhone X and my daily Pixel XL 2, but it may surprise me in terms of we know how great the display is and if it can really be as GREAT as the pixel in the camera department.
Let me know though and I'll be happy to test and compare.
I wouldn't personally give up on the pixel device as it is a better performer overall. Plus instant updates are a great.
Oh I'm not getting rid of my pixel hmm until the pixel 3 is released :silly:

I will never be without a Pixel device now, having stayed away from Stock android since the Nexus 5 (As I was more into skins) at the time, I didn't quite get what all the fuss was about fast forward to the Pixel XL 2 yeah I get it (took me a while) but now I truly get it and love it, just an annoyance that Google are restricting theming with Android P........

Couldn't agree more. I've been running dark themes since my DINC days! Themeing is one of my favorite things about android. Now I fear G may be taking all that away. I sure hope not though! ?
I was so tempted by the S9+ (switching from the Oneplus 5T) that I even preordered it. But after some research (happy to be corrected here if needed) regarding project treble, I was under the impression that the amazing camera features may not be available in an AOSP rom. The build quality of Samsung phones are very good and I was really pleased to hear of its project treble capabilities. But I ended up selling my 5T and getting the Pixel and couldn't be happier
Yeah they might introduce their own brand of theming (but that will suck,) and still be restrictive, I really don't get why white has and must be the standard colour,
This is more annoying when there is a shift to most OEM's using oled displays.
So why is there a refusal by Google to allow us to theme when we and they know that there are significant advantages for the user to use dark themes, battery life & getting rid of EVERYTHING being white which obviously impacts on that.
This is my only real gripe and its obviously just became recent with Android P, maybe they will think twice about that unwanted move.

I was going to cancel my S9+ order but I went ahead hmm more for testing and comparing ok ok & feeding my addiction (there I said it).
You my friend made a very sensible decision as much as the S9+ does pack a punch with Design & Display and offers up some great additions IP68, SD Card Expansion, Fast charging & Wireless, it really covers most area's. But honestly it can't touch the pixel for a device that is just an absolute pleasure to use. I wondered to myself after owning 30+ devices over 4 years, what is it with Stock Android? Like I said I had the Nexus 5.
What it is "Simplicity " not iOS simplicity but that none the less, its smooth like no other, its the little things like notifications replies, to the the whole UI (other than it being white) its the updates, and there is a nice vibe to it, and what about that camera :good:
Yes I am also interested in project treble and seeing if that speeds up updates with Samsung (Not holding my breath) if it doesn't then its my last ever Samsung. No excuses now
Glad like me you love the pixel & at the same time unlike me and saved your money
I'd be interested to see how the S9+ holds up after a few months of use, and how good the Front facing camera is. For me, the curved screen is a no go with Galaxies now, I just cannot get used to them.
S8+ and Note 8 shows significant lag and stutter unless you use the built in optimiser but then because it clears the temp and cache files, that means you have to load back in all your photo thumbnails etc when you load the apps.
With the Selfie camera, as much as people may hate it, it is great for groufies when out with friends and Samsung Front facing cameras almost always suck. Compared to the absolutely amazing pixel 2 front facer, I am unsure that the S9 will compete.
I think the quality of the F2.4 lens will be sharper than the Pixel 2, but I bet any kind of movement will blur again in anything less than optimal light, like most galaxies, which doesn't occur on Pixel.
Look forward to your thoughts and I hope you enjoy the S9+.
It will be interesting to compare, but I'll be waiting on the next Pixel XL 3 badboy! Cheers
Oh I WILL be getting the Pixel 3 XL..... And I will compare that to, although I still believe the pixel XL2 will still kick Samsungs ass in the camera department :good:

Battery life and lag: custom rom?

Hi,
Put a pre-order for the pixel 3 just to cancel it two days before its release in France due to the multiple bugs that I have been seeing.
Now, I turn myself to the s9 and I would like to know if battery and performance wise, after all the possible mods in this forum, would you still buy it again and are you happy with it?
I didnt hear about another android phone under 70mm width coming out in the next few months. I'm even considering the iPhone xs as this point but I would like to avoid it...
Cheers

Well Battery Life is good on My S9+ Exynos. It gets me though a full day with somedays with 15-25% remaining the next morning. Then I plug it in Just after I wake up and while my breakfast is over, like in 1hrs 30mins, My S9+ gets to a 100% and I feel ready to start my day!
Performance is also good. Never got any lags, even with heavy gaming and stuff. And its been like 6 months and everything seems to be silky smooth.
Mods and Custom ROMs- Mods and enough. Gcam port with great devs working on porting Google camera is present.
Custom ROMs and enough. But here's the thing, AOSP development for Android Pie seems to have slowed down a bit recently. there is no AOSP pie ROM for s9/note 9 nor any unofficial ones. Samsung Pie beta seems to be launching soon so you would anyways not miss on anything big. And Samsung's TouchWiz has become better now and is not a burden to bear on the S9. You also have custom ROMs based on TouchWiz with regular updates and great dev support!
I would choose a S9 ,or a Note 9 now since it is at the same exact price that I had paid to get my S9+, over a Pixel 3. Here's the reason. S9 has got great hardware and build quality. And amongst the few good features the Pixel 3 has is the camera (mostly just the camera) and the Pixel 3 camera app will ofc eventually get ported to the S9 so there's not much reason why anyone should choose a Pixel 3 over the S9. As for iPhone XS max, its a bit of a different story. Its bigger with more screen estate, has a better processor (7nm vs 10nm on S9) and has iOS 12 and all the greatness Apple has to offer. But do check its pricing. You can get the S9 at nearly Half the price of the XS Max (At some places) and you dont loose much either. Infact the S9 is better in some aspects than the XS. Like The Display is the best on any smartphone, you have a Finger print scanner along with Face and Iris scan.
Hope this helps you in making your decision!
I agree with the post above, there's just a bit of a correction for roms:
There are Pie roms ( in sGSI and GSI formats), and they work fine in most cases. The only thing is thst the HwComposer goes bananas so we have to increase the GPU freq to remove the UI lag ( it's done by default on the Alex PE Pie sGSI ) .
I came from the Oneplus 6 and besides the "crippled" Pie-based custom rom development, the S9+ is better.
As for the Pixel 3, the OP6 is a better choice if you are desperate for custom roms.
And for battery life - I use the Swift Black Substratum theme and I easily get through the day with my S9+.

Anyone coming from the oneplus 7pro? What are your thoughts missing anything?

Just checking anyone coming from oneplus 7 pro. Are you missing anything and what are your thoughts with regards to the performance of the phone and in hand feel?
There are a couple of things that I notice/miss from my OP 7 Pro, screen smoothness I definitely notice, the other is I occasionally get a stutter (I am using lawnchair v2 beta so this could be the reason). With that aside I have not even turned on my OP since I received my Note 10+.

? So why have you not turned on the oneplus ?
I had a OnePlus 7 Pro and a S10+, the OnePlus sat on my desk most of this time I owned it, sold it last week. While the OnePlus was smooth the in-hand feel absolutely killed the phone for me. I have large hands and that phone always felt like it was about to fall.
It's just not as nice in the hand as the S10+ or the Note 10+ even through the Note 10+ has a bigger screen.
This is coming from somebody who's owned almost every OnePlus phone made and the last Samsung I own was the Note 4.
Other than the 90hz display and the ever-so-slightly higher overall performance, I have only tinkered with the OP7Pro to try out the open Android Q beta.
While I don't think the Note10+ 5G is leaps and bounds beyond the OP7Pro, I prefer the slightly wider screen, additional Knox features, always on display, fast(ish) wireless charging, Dex over USB in Windows 10 and of course the 5G radio when I'm in Atlanta to play with stupidly fast speed tests lol.
Am missing mostly root and the ability to use themes for all apps like Gmail etc. It's a right pain looking at that white screen and there aren't any options to them all apps without root I assume?

Yeah, when I bought my S10+, Snapdragon version, I was a little weary about buying a non rootable phone but with all the customization you can do on them nowadays there's really no reason to root anymore.
Hmmm... Can't decide between Hex and Synergy. Anyone recommend one over the other for theming?
I miss the 90hz screen refresh rate and phone size was perfect for me on the oneplus 7 pro. After a few days i got use to the note 10 again but i had the exynos/snapdragon variant. I recommend getting the snap version its faster then the exynos but of course you dont have the root options

I recommend Hex. Couldn't never get Synergy to work properly.
Only thing I miss is the screen smoothness. I have exynos version of note10+ 5g. Sucks to be in Europe. But unlike s10 exynos this updated one feels a lot faster. Oneplus still very slightly faster at opening apps but not as significantly as it was when compared to S10.
In overall I do enjoy note I just wish it had slightly rounded corners.

Have tried synergy but having some issues and not sure if these are related to the app or our note 10. For the life of me I can't seem to theme both the status bar and apps. I can only either theme the status bar notifications shade and not the apps or the apps and not the status bar, no matter what I do! Any suggestions as this is what I want to theme
I miss the completely full screen experience of the 7 Pro (i.e. no camera cut out meaning I could stretch videos as much as I wanted).
I slightly miss 90Hz refresh, although I still maintain this is a bit of a gimmick feature until frame rates make it more worthwhile.
I don't miss the weight of the 7 Pro.
I don't miss the complete lack of firmware updates for the 5G "flagship" variant
I don't miss a camera that couldn't focus properly
I don't miss having to plug my phone into a cable every night because OnePlus "don't believe" in wireless charging
I don't miss being scared anytime the phone was near water (a sink etc.) because OnePlus think IP ratings are "unnecessary"
I don't miss phantom screen touches and random OS crashes making me reboot the phone almost daily

Note 10 plus vs oneplus 7 pro

Hi guys.
I have an op 7 Pro since June and I'm thinking about to switch to note 10 plus.
Does it worth the move?
Anyone who have both devices?
Before oneplus 7 pro I had s10 plus and p30 pro.
Thank you
May the power of Oneplus 7 Pro be with you
I don' know if you want to start a controversy about which device is worse or better, or anything, but then, The S pen is the fundamental reason why the note series exists, the s pen is the core of the of it, so I always answer this question by asking another, how much interest do you have on using the s pen? And, moreover, anyone thinking about a note series device should first get know about all its capabilities, in this way, you will find your answer, if for any reason you find that the spen is not that atractive for you, or consider it as just a gimmick, then a note series device most definitively is not for you, as there are some other devices that offer similar performance , to put it simple,
note series=S pen

I'm still with 7 pro. I tried note 10 plus and no 90hz is no buy for me..
Night and day difference in response, fluidity etc

I had the 7 pro. I liked that the phone was rootable, the fingerprint reader was way faster than on the note. It felt a little bit faster.
The reason i switched to the note was the pen and that it has wireless charging. Also that the auto brightness on the 7 pro was crap and annoying. To me the refresh rate wasnt that big of a deal or noticeable.
If you need the pen and wireless charging then its worth the trade. Small features make a good experience.
I had the 7 Pro. It was a great phone. I just wanted to go back to a Note. The wireless charging was one plus for the Note. It plays better with my Samsung Watch. The dual sims in the 7 Pro was a big advantage to me. The deal I got for the Note 10+ and the high resale of the 7
Pro made me switch.
Just made the switch myself. Had the pro for about 6 months, great phone, at first I noticed the difference in screen refresh rate, but a week in and I don't notice it anymore.
I much prefer the physical esthetics of the 10+ over the rounder pro. A square screen for me just feels way more natural.
I like the increase in battery life so far. It isn't huge but big enough that I get a full day now vs getting to evening time and needing to top up.
That said the charging time of the pro is much faster for me. I could get 50 percent in 20 minutes or less.
The auto brightness of the pro was still a big issue for me at times. It got real annoying.
Overall I am happy with the switch. Still have my pro, not sure if I'll sell it or keep it as an extra. It's a fantastic phone.
The only change I wish the note had was the higher refresh rate. I don't necessarily miss it, but this phone with say a 120hz refresh for me would literally be perfect.

Smart select with spen is very underrated feature.
I like fully featured phones and enjoy my note.

Two weeks in now, and I don't miss my 7 Pro at all. I was worried that the software would be my issue, but after switching the bloated carrier firmware for the unbranded version I have has zero complaints. Working like a dream for me!

Hey guys,
I just made the switch yesterday. Had the 7 pro for 2 weeks and since I am super sensitive about the display quality and brightness I decided to get the Note 10 plus. I have been a Sammy user for a long time now but I honestly feel Samsung is still ****ty with their software. For example on OnePlus I really liked how simply you could change the icon shape, change the notification bar settings icons to the custom color you want, even apply any other themes from the play store. You must be now thinking it all can be done in Samsung too but not really to the precision of OnePlus and definitely not so convenient. The FP scanner is really slow on Samsung. And one more major thing I was disappointed with is how they have taken out the different display color settings now on OneUI 2.0. I mean there are only 2 modes now. Earlier they had Basic and a Photo mode which would bring the saturation down, but now no way to do that. And finally the 90hz. Like someone mentioned here, I really didn't think it was a big deal after a weeks usage but after getting back to Note I can feel the difference again. But nevertheless I am happy with the display on Note 10 plus and I think I am going to keep it for sometime. Also few things that I didn't like on OnePlus like the rear camera quality, the overall weight and of course the display except for 90hz were the main reason I made the switch. I can't say I am completely happy yet but hopefully I will be.

Question I really like my Pixel 6 Pro

I've had my 6 Pro since December. I installed the December patch before it got pulled. I'm coming from a OnePlus 7 Pro that I loved.
The camera is amazing. The screen is great. I really like the call screening feature (which only arrived for me after the January update).
The finger print sensor is milliseconds slower than my OnePlus 7 Pro and is about the same accuracy.
My screen hasn't randomly cracked yet.
Android Auto is random at best (about the same as it was on my OnePlus 7 Pro and my Galaxy S8+ before that) which leads me to believe that Android Auto is not the most reliable but it's not a problem with the phone hardware.
I thought that the cutout would bother me more than it does. I notice it once in a while and I cringe when I see it compared to my OnePlus 7 Pro but even OnePlus doesn't offer a display without obstruction anymore so not many choices there.
Pixel gestures kind of suck. I wish I could go back to using the swipe up from the bottom that I had on my OnePlus 7 Pro but, again, even OnePlus uses the new gestures so there's not much a dude can do about it.
That being said over all I really really like the Pixel 6 Pro. There's some things I guess I don't like about Android and trends in the mobile phone manufacturing industry that I don't love but that's different than the phone.
I think most people will love their Pixel 6 and won't have any issues at all.
I love my P6 pro as well. Although I really hate to say it, the fingerprint on the back of the device like my old P3xl would make this phone flawless for me. But I still love my phone.
love the device so much i took a big financial hit to get rid of my Z fold 3 for one - samsung wont be seeing me for a long time

Same. The Pixel 3xl was the best phone ever, and the fingerprint sensor was the best thing about it! They should go back to that model, using through the screen is clunky and causes fingerprints.

I use Android Auto every day and I haven't had a problem. Every few years I sometimes run into consistent problems with Android Auto and replacing the cable I'm using (with another high-quality USB 3.x cable) always fixes the issue.

I avoided gestures until I got the Pixel 6 Pro. I finally resigned myself and mostly haven't minded it. If you want to continue avoiding using the navbar but want a workaround for swiping up from the bottom, Nova Launcher might give you close to what you want.
If you want to use the navigation bar then Nova Launcher should be able to be configured to completely do what you want with the swipe up from the bottom gesture.
It's fair if you don't want to use a custom launcher, though. I've sworn by Nova for the last 10+ years IIRC. Every time I give something else a try, I go back, and I don't bother trying anything else anymore.
Having used Samsung and OnePlus devices, I love the swipe up to go back feature. It results in far fewer accidental back presses than the default Google ones. For me, it was worth rooting and installing Fluid Navigation Gestures to get that feature on the Pixel 6 Pro.
Yeah, despite it's flaws, the p6pro is a great phone imo.
I got the 256gb model and bought a 30w pixel charger for it. Rooted it the 1st day I got it.
But the Bluetooth cuts out upon connection with my Sony bt headphones.
I'm on a13 DP2 and it's brilliant. Can't use viper tho
I love my p6pro too.
The only real complaint I have is battery life and photo quality. My pixel 2XL had better quality photos that weren't overly processed and were sharper.
Battery life is meh; I feel it drains too quickly and gets overly hot from just web browsing and texting.
I'd like to see more customization within the OS, since Samsung has an array of customization options Google refuses to provide. I don't mind using custom roms for that purpose, but they can be buggy and often break features from stock.

The Pixel 6 looks great. I'd get the Samsung 22,because I've hade Notes in the past, but their privacy policies are really creepy.
