Returning Defective 3XL - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

My 3XL from Google has the constant static noise during phone calls from the top speaker. Instead of doing an RMA, I've decided to just return to Google and wait things out a bit.
I have been going thru Google support and they came to the conclusion that it was defective. Now they want to charge a restocking fee of $35 to return the phone instead of doing an RMA.
Has anyone else encountered this, and if so what was the final result? Is there verbage somewhere on Google's site about the return policy?

https://support.google.com/store/answer/2411741/
"Restocking fees do not apply when the wireless device is returned because the item was defective when it was initially received by the consumer or because the incorrect item was delivered."

I just RMA'd mine for the same reason but suspect it's a design flaw with poor EMI shielding. The wifi and BT range is far worse than my 5 year old phone but I'd be willing to live with it if the phone calls weren't squealing and ticking. It's only worth $500 imo. Fight the restocking fee. Girl from google admitted they are getting lots of returns for call quality and speaker complaints.

galaxy nexus repair price

I am one of those people who have a crack on my nexus screen.
its not a major crack in the middle of my screen so I am not rushing to get it fixed, but when I contacted a lot of repair shops near me, the price to replace the LCD is seems to range in $300-400.
will this price ever go down? some guy told me it will only go up as time passes..
im not sure if he said that so I'll go fix my phone at his shop
or
if he was being honest...
so the question is
will the price of repair cost for this phone go down eventually? if so, will it ever be around $100-200?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Gonna have to do it yourself for a fraction of the price. It is not worth it to pay $300 for a repair... that's well over 1/2 the price of what a used device goes for. Even like $200 is atrociously high.
The cheapest I have found the replacement screen is $269, so the quotes you are getting sound about right. You could try to buy the screen and do it yourself. If you want to try it, here is a link to the part on Ebay: http://tinyw.in/vXxI. Also, for a complete teardown tutorial go here: http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-Nexus-Teardown/7182/1. Even though that is for the GSM model, it should still help you out because there isn't much difference.
As far as him telling you that it will get more expensive, I don't know. It is possible because because of supply and demand. It's also possible it could get cheaper especially if third party Chinese vendors start making them. You can get a screen & digitizer for an iPhone 3GS for $8 from China. They are not the same quality you would get from OEM's, but they do work. I have bought and fixed many, many broken iPhones and used the aftermarket screens and sold them for profit. The problem is, the Galaxy Nexus is not near as popular as the iPhone, so it's hit or miss whether or not these thrid party vendors will make them. If it was a Galaxy S 2, you could probably find it.
Good luck!
PS. Get the insurance next time. You would have to pay $100 deductible, but you would get a refurbished or brand new phone and usually the next business day after filing the claim.
You should definitely give Samsung a call, you should see the answers I posted in my related thread: [Q] Galaxy Nexus (SCH-i515) Replacement Screen -- Answered and see if my notes there help you. I got my phone repaired for less than $165.00 which seems to be in your $100-$200 range.
Getting it repaired for $270 is INSANE people...you could get a new Galaxy Nexus for $349 from the Play Store right now.
I just cracked my screen (so dumb and I just knew it was cracked fro mthe way it hit the ground completely flat on the screen)...Samsung told me it will cost me $250 not including shipping...others have told me different prices from Samsung which is very disconcerting....I said screw it and ordered the entire LCD/Digitizer display from Ebay for $199 with expedited shipping which came out to $224....I'm pissed about about paying this price but I have a white Galaxy Nexus and want to keep a white one....so I just got fed up and ordered it...the process for doing it yourself doesn't seem too hard...and I already have a screw driver that fits the screws holding the phone together behind the battery door...hopefully all goes well tomorrow.
I actually just got off chat support with a Samsung rep, and they told me that it would be roughly $165 to send it in for replacement. Most everything else hovers around $150-$200, so I figure I'll just send it in to them.
Botched Attempt, WHAT TO look out for

Botched Attempt, WHAT TO look out for
I just bought a new OEM screen digitizer LCD for less than 85. shipped on eBay.
Yeah, I had a crack in the digitizer glass. I bought a used ebay screen for $50 and replaced it myself. Works like a charm.

[Q] What should I do?

On Monday the cheap case I had gotten for my Gnex broke. I wasn't too worried since I have a 2100mah battery on its way, and I was going to have to buy a new case anyways. As fate would have it, the day I decide to leave my apartment with a naked phone is the day I drop said phone in the parking lot. The phone still works 100%, but the screen is cracked. I went to my local Sprint repair store and they told me they could repair the device, but it might be a while (as log as 2-3 months) before they could find a replacement screen. This of course would be covered by my "Total Equipment Protection" insurance plan that I have through Sprint. My other option is to drop $100 for a deductible and get a replacement unit. Unfortunately for me, it's the end of the month and I got a few other important bills that I need to take care of before I can go dropping a chunk of change like that on a replacement phone.
What I am wondering is this: If I went ahead and paid the $100 for the replacement phone, do you think I would be able to turn around and sell the damaged unit to someone so they can use it for parts or whatever, and I could offset the cost of replacing the phone? I've never faced this problem before, so I just want to see what my options are. If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, or ideas they would like to share, I would be more than happy to hear them.
I'm attaching a pic of the phone in it's current state. I don't know how well you can see the damage done to the screen, though.
That is unfortunate. If you look for a digitizer online you can find a tear down and fix it yourself, if you are comfortable doing that. If you do pay $100 for a refurb, wont you have to turn your old phone in?
As far as I know, you do not have to turn the old phone in. I think they want you to, so they can of course tear it down and sell it for parts or repair it and sell it as a refurbished unit. I'm not entirely sure though if you are required to hand over the damaged unit that is being replaced.
Unfortunately they will ask for your broken phone. UNLESS, you play it smart and say it got stolen.(you will have to make a police report, as they will ask for the report)
It's either you play the game of Cops & robbers and you let them win by keeping your phone & using it for a refurbished item. Or you win, and beat them at their own game by...Paying the $100 for a "new" refurbish nexus that they stole back from a customer like your self & keep your current phone.
With time, fix it yourself...
Then possibly sell, gift (girlfriend), keep for a long time (antique), or just have the privilege of carrying two Nexus!

[INFO][REPAIR] Dropped S4, cracked the inside LED

Update 1:
Did not get a chance to mail it due to family reasons but did mail it on last monday. Currently, the Samsung Online Service Status Checker Message window shows the following:
*06/14/2013//09:48:13//000*******//Telephone//ASC*
6/14/2013 8:47 AM-Jesus Esq****: Accessory: BATTERY

6/14/2013 8:47 AM-Jesus Esq*****: The unit has been received. Pack Condition: Fair Packaging (Box & Cushion)
The other changes: Expected Completion Date: 06/21/2013.
As mentioned, will update with whatever changes (major) happen to this repair for information to anyone who faces the same.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Initial Post: So, the Awesome S4 without a case, slipped out of my hand mid call, and landed on the bottom left corner and cracked the inside LCD/LED.
The Gorilla Glass is not cracked, only the front top bezel lining (metal) is dinged. The phone works flawlessly, with the calls, the internet and push services including the vibrating and everything fully functional.
The phone turned on but the display is bleeding, which I think is strange as this is supposed to be a AMOLED display. (I could be wrong and if so, I apologize)
Anyways, I searched online and found a way to fix it at home, but it required a lot of tinkering with things (the removing of the Gorilla Glass and the LED part, as the remaining was a piece of cake) that I was not comfortable doing.
Found a couple threads about cracked front glass and Sammy stating they will charge over $300 for fixing it.
Being skeptical, I still called Sammy, as I am hating using the spare iPhone sitting around my house (it takes a micro sim).
Was directly connected to the closest Service Center in Dallas, TX. Talked to this amazing lady who told me, that it could be anywhere from $25 - $200 to fix it. The price was awesome. I am willing to pay $200 as it is affordable, considering I paid over 600 for the phone.
Hopefully, none of you awesome folks have to go through this, but just in case, I created this thread to give you an exact number (cost wise).
Will keep you posted.

I would go with Sammy fixing it. The LCD Digitizer combo (youre easiest approach) is going for approx 229 on ebay. Didn't see one lower than that.
Plus, if Sammy fixes it, youre warranty is still in good standing. I seriously don't think 200 is bad for complete repair fee including parts and labor. thats really cheap actually.

Agreed. But, as I forgot to mention, I am a bit skeptical with the cost. I am sure they will let me know. That is why I created this thread for anyone who might need info.
I am just SOL to have to pay for it. But at least on the bright side, I will not have to use this stupid iPhone or change sim to regular and go back to the rooted Sensation.
I was planning on rooting the S4 but I dropped it before I got home and well....lol.
Agreed. The cheapest I was able to find that included the tools (screwdrivers and such) was for $233 shipped. But the process of removing and screen and glass was just a little gruesome.

If you buy the digitizer and LCD preglued, repairing it yourself is a sinch. I have done it already and its easy. But, repairing just one, ha good luck xD major PITA.
If they quoted you on a price, then thats what they have to stick with. I mean, the issue is clear, a cracked LCD screen. So they know right away what is needed to fix it, how long to fix it, etc so i would throw a fit if they try to jack up the price or something.

I still thought it was hard. I have done several repairs with Laptops and Camera's. But this was a little out of my league.....only the screen part. Rest seemed normal.
Here are the links I checked before braving to call the all mighty sammy.

Don't forget, sammy buys these products in massive bulk ammounts. So their price is going to be cheaper. Not to mention, they will prolly just replace the LCD and not the digitizer since they have the right tools to make separation and rejoining processes very easy.
Repairing S4
After dropping my TMO S4 (got one of those TMO D3 cases like a nub) and shattering the glass I decided to hit up the DIY and buy the glass to repair it. Coming from someone that works repairing motherboards this is by far one of the hardest things I have tried to do without the proper tools.
I ended up cracking the side of my display barely noticeable but it bugged the hell out of me. So bought the whole screen/digitizer/glass combo for 229.** from Ebay. Much easier process, tear down guide will help you remove the back casing and boards to connect the screen correctly after warming up the glue with a conventional hair dryer. I recommend getting an Otter box Defender case to save you all some headaches in the future.
I have an extra glass I can ship any of you for $20 that I will not be using (bought it thinking I would repeat the process for another unfortunate soul).
Either pay the $150 to get the unit replaced with the Warranty or replace the screen assy. completely if you do not have the proper tools to heat up the glue holding Digitizer/screen/glass together.

Thanks for the insight. I already have a S4 on ATT, wife got too impressed with mine and gave up her iPhone 5 for one. Planning on buying 2 more as soon as I get mine back. Sending it off tomorrow and will update with the progress.
I broke my Note 2 screen and had it repaired by Samsung for $178 including 2 day shipping both ways.
If you have modified it (rooted, ROMs, etc.) make sure you return it to stock before you send it or they will note it and it will be out of warranty from that point.

Gaww, thanks for the info. Since my Nexus One days, I am very aware of what you said. Thankfully, I was planning on rooting the S4 after I got home, but dropped it before I could. lol.
So I guess it was just luck.
Good to know that it was under $200 for repair. At least I am saving some money (kind of). Thanks.
So, from initial mailing and samsung receiving it on 6/14, I just got the phone back today: 6/21.
I am plesantly surprised with the quality of the work. They did fix the screen and such but also replaced the bezel and frame on the phone that was dented. The total charge for fixing it: $200.00
Hope no one have to go through it, especially the ones that do not have insurance. But just in case if anyone needs to, hope this forum Helps.
Admin, you can close this thread as answered.
I just bought a squaretrade.com warranty for $94 with a $99 deductible......glad I did!
For a $630 phone a $200 warranty is not a a huge amount, yeah squaretrade doesn't cover theft or loss but they cover everything else.
T-Mobile wanted $8 a month plus $175 deductible: So that turns out to be $192 for 2 years and $175 deductible for a total of $367.
Not trying to plug squaretrade, but **** its worth it.
No its not $8 dollars a month Insurance is now $12 a month.

Wow that is ridiculous. What a rip-off so for $288 + $175 = $463, why not just buy a new phone....lol
Glad I went through square trade.
Thanks for this post.
Due to a mind-numbingly mistake, I shattered my glass. Screen was fine. Found this thread and called Samsung.
The only thing that piqued my interest was that the agent said the phone would be reflashed. Uhoh.

Ear speaker distortion.

I have already had to replace one pixel XL because of the ear speaker was so badly distorted that I could not hear well. Now on my replacement it happening again. I have had it for 3 months now. The only thing that has changed recent was the May security update but I'm not sure that would mess with the ear speaker.
Has anyone ever had this issue with the ear speaker. I have seen plenty of issues with the bottom speaker breaking up but not the ear piece. I really don't want to go threw the replacement process again
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
I have a similar issue of slight distortion from earpiece and Bluetooth too.
It's noticeable especially coming from iPhone 7 and Samsung s8 that have high quality earpiece.
I bought mine few days ago second hand so I don't know if earpiece was like this from the start or broke down after an update.
I suppose we should wait till next update and see if it gets fixed

You and I are in exactly the same boat. I replaced mine this spring with a terrible ear speaker and I just went through the replacement process again. Waiting on my replacement to arrive. I'm really surprised that we aren't seeing more about this issue online since both of us have had this happen twice so far. It's got me a little concerned about what will happen when the 1 year warranty runs out...

Based on how Google treated their Nexus 6P customers after the one year warranty ran out my guess is they will tell you you're screwed --especially if it turns out to be a widespread issue. The speakers on the Pixel XL are actually pretty terrible when they are working properly. The only thing I can suggest to the poster who is reluctant to RMA his phone again is to try a factory reset first. It's possible the audio drivers got corrupted at some point and that a factory reset would fix the problem.

Yeah I'm worried about the after 1 year. And my 2nd replacement they just sent me has a bad GPS chip in it. I can't get any GPS location. I complied enough and asked to be compensated for receiving a defective device. Google offered me a refund for my original purchase price if I return the phone. I'm on the fence about what to do. I don't want to be stuck with a device I can't hear on after 1 year and really like this phone. I may just return it and hold it for the pixel 2 while trying to use a old device

That sounds like a good idea, actually because Google likely won't help you once the warranty expires. Given the recent history of problems with the Google devices going back to the last two Nexus models if you do buy a Pixel 2 you should seriously consider springing for the two year extended warranty. Your Pixel is no longer worth the original purchase price and will be worth much less still after the Pixel 2 comes out. If Google will refund your full purchase price just months before the Pixel 2 comes out that sounds like a too good to pass up deal to me.
I've had my Pixel phone for 3 months and I'm getting the distortion on the speaker. It's so bad I can barely hear people on the other end talking. My service provider is saying to bring it in for repair and it will be covered but I'm worried since I keep hearing of the same problem.

Question Galaxy Z Fold 3 - Dimple / bend near top left corner.

So I just received my #Samsung Z Fold 3 about a week back. And absolutely love it. I coming from the Note line of phones. 90% of my phones have been Galaxy Note devices.
Anyway, just yesterday, the Z Fold 3 was updating, when I suddenly noticed what seemed to be a dimple/bend near the top left corner of the screen. Seemed a bit strange. The screen was clean and it has not been dropped or any damage taken place. I noticed it when the screen was off. The dimple does not affect what you are viewing on the screen. It seems to be on the area between the screen protector edge and the frame of the phone. See attached pictures. Video below but somehow sound is not coming through.
Called #Z Fold 3 "Pro Support" and was on the phone for over 45 minutes. Told them that this is not an software or hardware issue. Not sure what it is. Not sure if this will expand or in any manner cause the damage to the screen. End Result, no help. I requested that since the phone is so new, can they not just replace it with another unit? First they wanted to factory reset the unit. I asked how is that going to help when I can see the dimple/bend when the screen is off? "Pro Support"!!! Finally their answer, just return it and get another one. I told them, I preordered it which gave me a lot of store credit and not to mention great deal on my trade in, which I would I would no longer get, if I returned the device. Frustrating, how #Samsung Customer Support works. Don't think that these people understand at times. This is despite sending them the pictures and videos and them agreeing with the defect they see. Someone from #Samsung should really evaluate this. They ask me to call Sales Department. How is that supposed to help!!!
If there is someone from #Samsung, please help. Don't want to return the whole order.
It's delaminating... sealant failure.
Is what it looks like to me...
Likely it will continue to propagate.
llooks like you got a returned unit
My Bluetooth stopped working and they gave me two options.
Cancel and return everything. Which meant for me losing pre order gifts, extra trade in value, and order again.
or
let them repair it. I choose the latter. It took them two weeks in total to fix it. They replaced the main and sub board.
Samsung itself doesn’t replace.

Not for your benefit. Too late.
The other question for you is if it fails again, what will Samsung do?
I saw Canon replace a $6G pro cam with a new one after hardware lockup issues after their 1st repair attempt failed. They didn't even blink... they just made it right.
You paid big bucks for a brand new device, it should not need hardware repairs out of the box.
Unacceptable.

I don’t waste my time thinking about things that may could occur. I still have warranty. Also I have an extra 6 months of warranty on the repairs. I’m protected by law, after the third repair attempt I can even get my money back.

You paid big bucks for a brand new device, it should not need hardware repairs out of the box.
Unacceptable.

I agree but what should I have done instead? Make a scene? Those are just the rules. Samsung is not your friend. They want just our money and do the bare minimum that’s forced upon them.

Canon is a trusted partner; Samsung and Android are not.
Trust is earned.
There are numerous reasons why I gave that advise. In your case it's irrelevant but not for others who just had one fail!
Over the years I've returned more than one Samsung device.
Samsung has always run hot and cold with incredibly horrible tech support.
You paid big bucks for a new device. Not for one that self destructs due to poor QC, design and/or assembly. Get it?
Actions have consequences... but only if you hold them accountable.
Mind you I wuv my N10+, I have 2 of them now.
Running on P and Q but not R, ever.
My wrath at Samsung and Android is a laser sharp focus on their continued fubars, not successes. In the last year there have been many, which is why I choose to bypass both this year and in 2022. Zero regrets.
OP, if you have an Asurion repair center (formerly UBreakIFix) near you, you could always take it to them have them look at it. They are the official repair center for Samsung and who does all their warranty repairs and service.

I have had a different experience. Since the S4 I owned every S and Note device and only my S8 had a dead pixel and now my Fold 3 had Bluetooth issues. Other then that every device was fine and never broke while I owned it.
Used the Note 7 for a year had it rooted and restrictions disabled had no issue with it.
Samsungs QC is not bad.

Some people just don't like Samsung and want you to dislike it as well. I've owned nearly every Samsung flagship since the S7 Edge. Including all the Notes (not the Note 7), and the ZF2 and ZF3. Oh, and I literally own every single version of the wireless buds they've ever produced. And two of their Tab S tablets. Samsung customer service is clunky, but they've never not taken care of an issue for me immediately and without question. I've made two warranty claims through all those devices. And I've owned several of each device, because I can never decide on a color.
From what I've heard, they use multiple protective layers and perhaps there is an air bubble between them. Regardless,, I'd seek a replacement.

It's actually a delamination or adhesive failure. It wasn't present when first purchased.
Most likely cause is improper surface/adhesive preparation or curing. This should not happen.
If not an isolated incident it indicates a larger design and/or production problem. Time will tell.
Samsung's we'll repair it rather replace it response is unsettling for a brand new flagship phone. It's not the customer's fault.
At this point it's now a reconditioned phone, thanks Samsung. How much much should that knock off the price?
Yet Samsung lets the customer suck up their failure. Yeah...
That's not how to make things right.
Personally I would have ripped into them like a chainsaw if they tried that with me... a stone cold pleasure.
There are too many stories about bad Samsung service here on this site alone. Cover yourself when dealing with them. Take detailed pictures before/as boxing , double box and fully insure anything of value you ship to them.

Yes, I'd demand a brand new phone. There is absolutely no excuse for them not to replace a $1700+ device with a brand new one.

Don't mind me asking. Did your fingernail accidentally poke the part of the screen when you are removing case?
I don't know how close your issue is to mine but I had an air bubble along crease and a few days later it got bigger and put pressure on the crease until the crease has a thick solid black line from top to bottom and the right side of inner screen no longer worked.
I managed to get it fixed through warranty by going to a samsung service center but not before the phone rep and store rep try to make it seem like I was responsible for the issue. They ended up repairing it in 3 hours but they did a professional job. I thought the phone was a replacement. Had stickers everywhere like when you first buy it. Would have preferred a replacement so I could avoid waiting but that's what Samsung care plus is for with the $250 deductible.
P.S, if you have care plus and you have an issue that is covered through warranty, don't tell them you have care plus or they'll try to get you to do it through them and they always charge that $250 deductible. Warranty repairs are free

That's not encouraging... a lamination failure.
It sounds like one of those self adhesive screen protectors that I hate. However one of those cost around $50 to buy and have applied.
Samsung's deductible of $250 more than covers the part and labor. That's not a good deal.
I'm not impressed with Samsung for they way they are fielding this expensive device.
It's doomed to fail at the fold, just a question of time. Samsung knows this all too well.
