Call Screening in UK? Is there a way to get it working? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I got my Pixel 3 XL today - UK release day - and I am sure like many other was disappointed to see call screening restricted to the US.
It doesn’t make any sense as we speak the same language and I am prepared to change the settings to get it to work.
So I changed the language to US, I changed my Google account location - but nothing still no call screening option.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

It's a server side feature, has nothing to do with settings. From what I have read- it will be coming to the UK eventually.

So one of the main features I bought the phone for is restricted to the US which they didn't even make clear to us. nice.

I wonder if there are some GDPR issues. Google is monitoring the call, transmitting it to this servers...it warns you the call is being recorded.
Still, they should have been clear on availability.

Nothing is transmitted to their servers, it's all done locally on the device. I imagine the feature will roll out to us in an update, like the night mode on the camera.
Very disappointed to see both features not present in the UK from day one, considering they're two main selling points of the phone. Pisser.

They made it perfectly clear, announced at the keynote: https://youtu.be/EsoQGTA1SxY
Posted on their blog on 10/9:
First, starting out in English in the U.S., Pixel 3’s on-device AI helps you screen phone calls and avoid spam calls. Imagine you’re at dinner with family or in a meeting at work and a call from an unknown caller comes in.

Welp, I must be both death and blind. Apologies for my idiocy there. Thanks.

It is an on phone feature so surely there must be a string or something like with night sight to enable it... maybe someone can make a modded phone app?
I really want to use this rather than wait an inderterminate period of time for it to be released in the UK.
Interestingly I put a Project Fi SIM in my Pixel 3XL and the call screen option appeared but then when I want to try it it was gone... even with a Fi SIM and a US phone number....

Someone in Reddit claims to have activated it in India (on a rooted 2xl)...
So hopefully only a matter of time. (I'm waiting for it in Aus)
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

I was also really disappointed as they had never mentioned this in their marketing messages. Then I found this https://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/whatistps.html
Apparently, this is a legitimate solution for filtering nuisance calls.
No point in waiting until Google make this available in the UK.

I'm in the U.S. but I got it working on my P2XL, including transcripts about a month ago using this mod , but this requires root. Then I bought a P3XL and was irritated that transcripts hadn't rolled out officially even though I had been using them on the P2XL for quite a while. So I opened up the .xml file in the P3XL and the same flags were there. I only changed 2 flags to true and boom, transcripts were working. This is very easy to do and easily reversible (especially when you save a copy of the original xml file). When reading the mod OP, note there are locale based flags to avoid the U.S. location check and I think it's worth a shot if you are rooted. Give it a go and report back if it is working for you. Here are the strings I am referring to:
Code:
<boolean name="__data_rollout__SpeakEasy.OverrideUSLocaleCheckRollout__launched__" value="false" />
<boolean name="G__speak_easy_bypass_locale_check" value="false" />

Follow the below post and it works irrespective of where you are. (It needs root though)

And you believe them? Google cannot be trusted. I assumed everyone knew this by now.
Call screening is an awful feature and if you use it to filter spam or robocalls in the UK you will end up getting even more as answering a robo call will simply tell the spammers that you are active and they will bombard you.

Wow. CS is the best thing ever, and I very much enjoy using it. It works very well on non-spam calls as well when you just cannot take the call or it's a reminder from your doctor, pharmacy, etc. Google already screens out the majority of spam calls (they are marked spam) and makes it easy to block these and any other repeat callers. Yeah, it's still whack a mole but now you don't even need to pick up the phone. As for the UK users, you can try the mod if rooted. Otherwise know it will be there "soon".

New Pixel 3 XL just received...am I missing something?

I received my P3XL recently and forgot about the call screening feature. However, when I get calls, I don't have the call screening button. I've updated the Phone app to v.24 already. I read there wasn't anything I needed to disable/enable. Can someone provide some clarification? I've gone through the whole phone and can't find anything related to call screening. Much thanks!

I'm in the states. I'm in Atlanta. Using T-Mobile.
**Edit**
So I just downloaded the Assistant app and now within the settings of the phone app, call screen setting shows up.. I though it was suppose to work right of the box? Is it because I did a device transfer from my iPhone -> P3XL?

That only works if your carrier supports RCS. That has nothing to do with Google.

I can confirm that my regular Sim is also not getting it as well. I know RCS is supposed to be available on TMobile either now or soon, so I just can't wait until it's fully implemented. I'm sick of iMessage being the only decent first party messaging service ??
No RCS on pixel phones with T mobile. TMO only supports Samsung devices and I believe one LG phone.
Very few US carriers support Universal RCS and it's usually just a few devices if it is available. The carriers publicly state their support of Universal RCS, but clearly there is little to no motivation to switch. Right now texting uses the carrier's propriety technology and they don't want to give up that control. I doubt Universal RCS will ever reach the masses even though it is clearly a better user experience.
In a timely development, it's being reported that Google will be taking control of rsc rollout by giving uses a choice to opt into a Google service. Not in the US to start, but we will see where it goes.

I just saw some articles referring to that... I really do hope that they deliver on their word and it isn't another failed attempt like Allo was

How to set up on Verizon.

Hey guys. I'm on Verizon and currently am on my Essential Phone and just bought a 7T and was wondering how to go about switching it. Back when the 6T came out I know you had to call Verizon and tell them to switch it to a CDMA-less device and do some other things but wasn't sure if it got a little more streamlined with the 7T. I did read one article from a website that just says I need to switch the SIM and then go into My Verizon, log in and activate. Is that accurate? Anyone with experience in this? Thanks in advance.
I've switched 3 lines to OP 7Ts. All that I did was log into my Verizon, find the switch device option, type in IMEI and it automatically added CDMA less, advanced calling....and I just followed the directions given in the screen....all 3 work great!

Thanks! That's all I needed to know!
I ran into my own slew of issues getting my phone activated on verzion (t-mobile oneplus 7t, already carrier unlocked).
Here's my experience.
I went into the verizon store and they could not activate my phone based on its IMEI. That said, they took the sim from my pixel and popped it in and phone calls worked no issue. I could also send text, but could not receive them.
It took a few calls, but I eventually had to get to tier 2 tech support where they manually had to key in my device info so it could be activated on Verizon (wasn't in their device database). It was showing up as unknown device before then in their system and in the my verizon app. They said it would take 24-48 hours before it would be in the data base. About 24 hours later, I checked the My Verizon app and found it was now listed as a OnePlus 7T UNL and showed the device image.
After doing that, I had to call into support again and ask them to add Feature #83856 be added to the line (I had done this before on two other calls by requesting CDMA-Less be added, that didn't work as the techs had no clue what I was talking about and wanted to pawn me off onto One Plus support). Just ask for the feature number as they can look it up and add it to your line fairly easily. The moment they added that feature to my account, my texts started pouring in.
Hope this is helpful if you run into any similar issues that I did. I love this phone so far, hopefully they will streamline this setup in the future as I made multiple trips to verizon and called into support at least a dozen times before figuring out the best way to approach this. Expect tier 1 support to have no idea what you actually need 90% of the time and keep pushing for a T2 escalation if your device shows up as unknown in their system.
I've also read that if the device shows up in the system and you're having issues, getting a new sim may correct without having to worry about having features added/removed from the line as it should auto provision the features (according to T2 tech) when activating a new sim on a 1+ phone that is already in their system.

Coverage has been great, I haven't run into any issues honestly vs having a cdma compatible phone previously (pixel 3 xl). Data speeds have been just as good. I did flash my firmware to the international version to get quicker updates and remove the T-mobile apps and tweaks.
One thing I didn't tell them the whole time I was adding my phone to their system was that this was a T-Mobile OnePlus 7t. I just told them it was an unlocked OnePlus 7t I purchased online. This was before I flashed the international software, so nothing on their end flags you as having the T-Mobile version unless you tell them. Not sure if they would deny you or use that as a reason to send you on the way otherwise.

Do you think this is still possible. I bought a hd1907 T-Mobile and it's on way, had the store give me the IMEI so I could activate before it got here. Website says incompatible. Messaged them and they said the same thing. Should I just wait and put in my sim then go from there?
So is it possible to use Verizon on the HD1905 dual sim phone just the same as the T mobile model? I actually switched 2 of my lines to AT&T just to be able to own this phone. No texting was the deal breaker for me.
BTW, is anyone getting wifi calling with verizon?

VZW allows wifi calling on Verizon branded 8's, but won't activate wifi calling on the 7 series. The claim is that the 7's could be a network security hazard because they never went through Verizon's testing.
This is Verizon's decision, not OP's.

Thanks, but I would not want an unlock-able VZW branded phone. But thanks for the info. :highfive:
I don't even have Visual Voicemail on my HD1900. I will be switching to the Pixel 5 or the S21 because this and the no wifi calling.
I made the wifi calling sacrifice for a dual sim phone. OTOH, I can always use Google voice for wifi calling if needed.

According to this first hand account, you are SOL. Get the HD1905 and you will be able to use Verizon.

I use the 1905 on verizon, however Google Messages is completely broke.
* No RCS messaging
* Previous iphone users cant SMS me (even with proper deregistration/new convos)
* Messages app cant insert pictures from Google Photos library
* Message app inserts weirdly formatted images sometimes, like converting a jpg to an mpeg4 which cant be opened

I am using 2 VZW sims, and Google Messages works just fine on both. No problem with inserting sending or receiving photos from Google Photos or any other source.
I guess most nonVZW phones cant do RCS, exept for the pixel, AFAIK.
I am not sure about, if people with iPhones can text me?
Maybe you have a setting or permission problem.

Question [HELP] Call Screening Setup Issues

I'm having issues getting past the "Download a language update to finish setting up Call Screen", been trying for the last 48 hours.
Clicking it returns "The update isn't ready yet, wait a few minutes and try again"
Phone: Pixel 6 Pro
Google Phone Version: 72.0.406921769-publicbeta-pixel2021
Service provider: EE
Country: UK
The odd part is, using the Public Beta version on my Pixel 5, I set up Call Screening without any issue, downloaded, followed prompts and done.
I've had a look at a few threads referencing Call Screening and I've checked the following...
GBoard Language: English (UK)
System Language: English (UK)
Google Assistant Language: English (UK)
Google Account Language: English (UK)
I've tried deleting cache and storage for the Phone app multiple times yet still fails with the above error.
I've tried doing it on WiFi and on 4G, end result is the same.
Any ideas I'd appreciate...
is there a public beta on the Pixel 6 Pro? Where is that from?

Just enrol into the Beta via Play Store and that's the version you get. (On Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro)
Default version is 72.0.406921769-pixel2021
Public Beta version is 72.0.406921769-publicbeta-pixel2021
I don't think there's any difference between these two versions, it's just that I was enrolled into the Beta on my Pixel 5 and it carried across.
Thanks - i was on Beta on Pixel 5. assumed it would have rolled that over .... assume nothing
My issue is still open for anyone new to the thread. Hoping someone can help.
Have the same issue on Pixel 6 Pro in Ireland. Pixel 2XL worked fine before moving to 6.
I don't even see the option for Call Screening - Pixel 6 Pro, UK, ID Mobile.
Forgive my ignorance, but is this related to the automatic call screening or just manual call screening - or all of the above? According to this article Google rolls out Call Screen to seven more countries — but there's a catch:
Google Pixel owners in more countries can now filter out robocalls, albeit manually.

I spoke to them and confirmed it was and they told me what to troubleshoot and if it didn't work then to wait 48 hours.
Works fine for me in the UK but I has to set all my languages to English UK and then clear cache and storage on contacts then reboot and it worked after that.
Call Screen option has been updated recently to this now. The 'Voice' option appears but still fails to download the language pack when I click it.
When I receive a call the "Call Screen" option appears but clicking it doesn't do much, doesn't transcribe what they say and the Accept/Decline call buttons don't work at all.
Does anyone have any idea on how to complete the setup so the feature works correctly?
I am experiencing exactly the same problem as you... did you find a solution for this?

As of a few days ago it was magically configured.
My suggestion to you would be not to reset the app/cache, be in the beta and just leave it.
After 1 to 2 weeks it should configure. It takes time... I don't know why, but it took me a while.

Question Disable call waiting?

Everywhere shows it under more settings but I don't see a more settings.
Can it be done via command?
I don't want call waiting, hate it!
On mine (factory unlocked P6P on AT&T), it's at the Phone app's Settings / Calls / Additional settings / Call waiting.
But if you don't have that option there, I apologize, I don't have any other information.
That's the issue, Additional settings is missing!
Mine is factory unlocked version on VZW esim.
If that doesn't help, I know this is for AT&T, but I found this when doing some Googling - might be still worth a try.
The most helpful Verizon-specific information I found was this, however as one of the answers points out, the main answer is no longer valid - at least it wasn't in 2019 unless they reinstated the old solution, so still worth taking a look in your account as the answer says.
Verizon's FAQ only has:
Yes, you can disable it temporarily by pressing *70 before calling a number.

which is a bad half-solution.
Edit: Here's a possible better Verizon answer, but it sounds like you'd have to call them to turn it off - or back on if you ever wanted, and no idea if this applies to all phones as the person had an iPhone.
With verizon it's included in your plan. You maybe can disable it in your plan but not the phone itself i don't think.
