As they title said I tied to find out but am at a loss in trying to find out exactly what is happening when we use the HQ mode in the camera app.
In night scenes it seems to produce a better photo but the shutter speed is the same. One plus have not really said what they have changed since the HD to HQ update so wondered if anyone could let me know ? Is it an extra stop in exposure maybe ?

Thanks for the video but it didn't really answer my question as it was only a comparison.
That video just compared the 2 options of HD (which has slightly changed since they renamed it to HQ) and HDR. It does not explain what kind of post processing happens apart from staying it used a de noise filter. I wonder what "exactly" is happening with exposure, contrast, saturation etc when you use this HQ mode ?
If anyone knows that would be really helpful.

When using HQ in lowlight, it automatically reduces shutter-speed even more compared to the already lower speed in auto-mode.
Lower shutter-speed = lower framerate
1/30s = 30fps
1/10 (mostly when using HQ) = 10 fps
When others say they don't see the lag, it must only mean they did not test this in the same lighting conditions as you did.
It "lags" here too and so does it on every device which will use 1/10 or even lower shutter speed which shows you a real-time preview of what the image will approximately look like when taking the shot.

Finally a sensible answer. Thanks man. I had been asking around and Juan Bagnel said it's probably doing something like a dslr de noise function so what you said makes sense I have only used it indoors with artificial light so probably had no lag but so is what is displayed on the screen if it is leggy is representative of the shutter speed ?
I have heard from a Carl Pei interview that the camera is the reason for the phone having 6gb of ram because it snaps 4 photos at the same time we snap one photo. The phone then automatically chooses the best one photo of those four photos. I reckon that is also a probable answer due to the lag you are experiencing.

No, this is not the answer for the "lag". Why doesn't it lag in good lighting then?
I already gave the correct explanation for this.
As an example: I don't know if you have experience with the OnePlus One. It also started lagging much heavier in lowlightconditions due to the low shutter-speed.
Eventually, Sultan released his modded camera hal which forced the camera to not go below 1/30s on the shutter-speed.
The result was a perfectly fluid viewfinder regardless of the lighting conditions.
I am only talking about the fluidity of the viewfinder here. (Shutter-speed and video-framerate is a whole different story not to be mixed-up here...)
I've seen this interview too,
but I don't agree with him that it takes the best of these 4, instead I think that it somehow combines them into one.
This often results in more blurry pictures, even in good lighting!

As you can already see in the video, all images were taken without HQ or HDR. You can clearly see this when taking a picture and quickly swiping to the gallery.
For an instant, you will see the unprocessed picture which quickly changes as processing is being applied! Sometimes to the worse though :/
This gets more pronounced the more the ISO level goes up on a shot.
I was holding my phone as steady as possible and you can see that the shots which are displayed first look sharp before postprocessing.
So how can this be explained when, as Carl says, "the camera takes the best out of 4 shots"?!?
I first thought that in HQ mode, the camera is doing Dynamic Denoise
Grainy pictures are a thing of the past with Dynamic De-noise, which takes several photos and compares them to reduce noise and improve clarity.

However GSMA review says that the Denoise function gets activated automatically when there is minimum handshake and is not dependent on modes.
A few other things I have noticed.
1) On 3.1.x the noise suppression was very aggressive, almost like a water paint effect. On 3.2.x, the photos are more natural. Still less noise that normal mode.
2) The minimum shutter speed in HQ mode is 1/10 while without HQ it is 1/17
3) RAW is disabled in HDR as well as HQ modes. This makes me think that the HQ (like HDR) is using multiple snaps to filter noise that is Dynamic denoise. If you quickly switch image preview after clicking a pic, you can see the transition from normal to HQ happening. This is definitely not normal noise reduction.

This is exactly what I said in my post right above yours and it even happens when HQ and HDR are disabled.
Check the linked video. I bet this is what you mean.
I hate this behavior, often faces are smoothed out because of this, even in perfect lighting conditions.

A raw file is a photographic negative without any processing applied to it.
So even when the app would generate a raw file in HQ mode,
it would not look any different than the raw file created with HQ disabled.
My best bet is that the app is saving its resources for the HQ postprcessing,
thus completely skipping the raw part intentionally.

When I'm watching any HDR10 content in landscape on the YouTube app, the display brightness goes haywire and continually goes all the way up and down by itself. It only acts like this when viewing full screen. It does this on both vanced YouTube and the regular app but not when playing directly through the YouTube website. I turned auto brightness off and it still does this. Does anyone else experience the same problem? I own the L29 btw

Summary: An intermittent stutter or lag (most notably during fullscreen 4K HDR playback, in my case) which only goes away when you activate certain screen recorder applications like Game Tools or AZ Screen Recorder.

The following two are from myself. My problem is that all 4K HDR content (could extend to other formats also but I need to do more testing) is stuttering or dropping frames. Screen recorder on and boom - it's smooth.

The lag returns as soon as you deactivate screen recording, which suggests that this is either a bug with the CPU or GPU not being optimized or boosting its frequencies properly, leading to these stutters.
I've put Snapdragon in the title as these posts all appear to be from Snapdragon owners, whether it's the US or HK variant. I don't recall ever having this issue as a last generation S9 Exynos owner. If you are an S10/+/e Exynos owner and encountering this issue, you could still try using your phone normally, with a screen recorder active and then without, to see if there is any performance gain (as crazy as it sounds, it might actually make a difference).
Below is a test I'm using to demonstrate my problem. It involves installing apps (namely YouTube Vanced and either one of two screen recorders I've tested it with), so it's not the most convenient. If I find a better method, I will update the post accordingly.
You will need YouTube Vanced. I'm suggesting Vanced because the original YouTube app doesn't let you view at 4K resolution.
Firstly, open Vanced and tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Now open Game Launcher, tap the three dots in the upper right > Add apps and add YouTube Vanced to the list. We're doing this for the screen recording function which I'll mention later.
Note: if you don't have Game Launcher or Game Tools, you can try AZ Screen Recorder as an alternative. Nice Shot does not work.
Once that's done, here's a 4K 60fps clip for you to try. It should be easier to perceive any hiccups with the higher frame rate. Please set the resolution to 2160p (tap the three dots in the upper right) and watch in fullscreen / landscape orientation:

Panning shots work best. For reference, see points 0:19, 0:46, 1:48, 2:14, 2:42, 3:04, 4:11 and 4:41 in the video. Does it look like it's stuttering or dropping frames intermittently?.
Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar (you need the navigation bar enabled to use the recording function) and tap on Game Tools, which is the leftmost button. Tap Record.
While the screen is recording, are the stutters now gone? To my eyes, the video plays back perfectly while the recorder is active.

What resolution are playing those videos at?
I played the Peru 4k 60 @1080P one on youtube and it was great. Then played the same on Vance 1440 @60fps and it was same smoothness.

I just tested this using the supplied download links for the actual video and AZ screen recorder.
In all honesty I couldn't see any difference between the video running with or without the screen recorder recording it. They both looked smooth. I was using the default video player to watch the downloaded video.

That looks like the Samsung video player, but no matter since the problem persists across other players too. MX Player in HW decoding seems to be the worst performing one for me.
Did you watch in landscape fullscreened? I keep forgetting to add that detail. If it was the same regardless, then I guess that removes the US Snapdragon from the equation. But thanks for taking the time to test, much appreciated :good: People probably think I'm bullshitting but once I find a concrete way to show what I'm experiencing, I will update this thread.

No offense but your premise is flawed at best. All you have done is made a subjective claim backed up by no legitimate measurable evidence..
Having people install screen recorders and play videos is not 'testing' anything..

That's been tried by someone already but the thing with these cross-comparisons is that they aren't conclusive enough for some people. For me it's crystal clear because I already know what to look for.

The most obvious thing is that the scrolling is laggy on the HK model, but if you look closely, the video is stuttering too (look at the zooming out shot at the beginning). Exynos is completely smooth.
Stuttering video is a big no-no for me, really should not be happening on a phone of this spec.

Okay fair enough my test isn't the most thought out, but if you have any better suggestions on how to demonstrate the problem, you're more than welcome to provide them.
Stats for nerds doesn't show dropped frames, so it's likely that any FPS monitoring software would be useless too.
No it's not a subjective claim because if you read through the post and links in full, you would see a number of people confirming the problem. Doesn't matter how few, it's still an issue that shouldn't be ignored.

Not the scrolling specifically because that's related to the problem. For me the scrolling is laggy AND the video stutters. Are you sure the video is completely smooth? It might seem so but on mine there are frame drops present - even if it's very minor, there should be none at all.
It's best to compare with another capable device side-by-side with your own eyes, as no video recording will be able to demonstrate this clearly enough. There's also a chance that some people aren't sensitive enough to stutters and might not even be able to perceive them (I'm not saying you are, this could genuinely not be happening on your device).
And even if the video doesn't appear to be stuttering to you, shouldn't the laggy scrolling be enough cause for concern? A last gen phone is running smoother and that's not acceptable. Don't settle for mediocrity guys.
edit: before anyone questions the absence of screen recording in that video, the person who uploaded it has another post on reddit where he mentions it fixing the problem.

Watching it at 1440p on native YouTube app it seems the scrolling is smooth. But on Vanced @2140 not so smooth scrolling. Probably the Vanced app or cpu etc binning on the snapdragon.

I don't think it's the app or hardware because once I turn on the screen recorder, playback is perfect (landscape). I'm no expert on this but a logical guess means there's a frequency boost while the recorder is active, removing the stutters.
If I could find a less ****ty workaround that does the same, I would be okay with it, but there isn't

So one thing that I understood from the launch live is that google has collabbed with Snapchat to bring full implementation of HDR within the app.
My biggest doubt is.. will it also fully integrate with all the other social network apps or not? I mean apps like TikTok, Instagram and most of all, Whatsapp..
What makes an android phone so bad for socials is that they totally cripple camera performance once you use a third party camera app. On the other end iPhone's do it perfectly. If only the Pixel filled this gap, it would be a no brainer choosing Android over iOS..!
I currently have a Pixel 3 XL and every time I use the camera to take photos in Whatsapp or videos in tiktok, its utterly ugly, it looks like the pic was taken from a Galaxy s4.
I'm still not so sure if we even have "true" HDR10 (or better, like Dolby Vision on Iphone 13Max) on the Pixel. Did anyone actually try to look at picture/videofootage at a HDR capable monitor/TV and did HDR kick in?
As far as I know, it's all some fake-ass SDR vivid-algorithm BS.

I guess we/you'd have to transfer footage of your phone (video/photos) to a HDR capable device (like an LG CX or something like that) and see if HDR kicks in. It's also possible to detect this with Windows tools like MediaInfo. If the video is recorded with HDR it will have a color space of BT. 2020 also know as REC.2020.
Even though it's kinda tricky to determine if it really is shot in 10bit. There is a differenec between color depth and color space, meaning a video can be shot in 8bit and can still output a HDR signal, even though it lacks all basic features that HDR should offer. This whole HDR story is a joke at this point, it's basically broken in Windows, the whole industry is split in several factions (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision...), there is almost no cross-compatibility and then you can't even trust the output of a file, as explained earlier.
It sucks, and it sucks hard. I - for example - tried to get Mass Effect: Andromeda working with Windows 11 (Dolby Vision) and stopped after about 9 hours of troubleshooting because of Black Screen problems, rainbow color issues, crashs, forced restarts because the Windows UI crashed/became invisible...
HDR is just a mess. It only works well if you put a streaming device directly into an HDR capable Television and use Apps like Disney+, Netflix, HBO MAX or something like that.
It's a shame, because footage shot in true HDR look simply stunning.

i'm getting ColorSpace YUV with video and pictures, even when using Open Camera with HDR enabled.
I haven't had any issues in Windows with my second Monitor that has HDR capabilities....but there are times when I turn it off because it doesn't look the best in some games.

I was really satisfied with tablet until I started to watch DV and HDR movies (netflix, hbomax, plex). Searching internet and I could not find nothing to get rid of "ultra" black dark scenes in videos.
Is there any app that would change gamma of video or something like that?
I'm so disappointed that I'm looking which tablet should I buy and sell this one ... wrote to Xiaomi via email and via system bug report and no solution, it seems they really don't care for us - users of this tablet ...

I am using kodi + netflix plugin to force SDR streams
It takes some effort to set up and you lose some of netflix functionality (like downloads)
I think there's also similar plugins for other services (disney+, HBOmax, etc) but I have not personally tried them
It's a shame because xiaomi keeps marketing this device as Dolby Vision capable but we have to look for workarounds to disable this "feature"
Hopefully they will fix it if we provide enough reports, and now that the device got released in India it's expected to get more attention because it's a big market for Xiaomi

I'm also looking for this from weeks but no luck. We have to wait if Xiomi will fix this via update or we have to accept and start using as it is.
For the new tablet, you won't get any tablet in this price range which can beat mi tab 5 performance (except DV and HDR issue) if you want to wait then check realme tab having 870 processor and same specifications as mi pad 5.
Maybe new lenovo, but cost more

Go to Advanced tools -> Video toolbox and add apps to video toolbox. Now when you open any added app, you will see a pill at top left corner. Drag it and select different styles of scenes. One of those styles disables HDR.

That's not true at all. There's not a single option that disables HDR, they only apply filters to the apps you chose. HDR is on a system level and it cannot be disabled at this moment.
Toolbox might help if you chose the "Outside" style, but still crap with black/dark content.

I agree. It doesn't solve the issue entirely but atleast I can see the picture a little better in bright environment.
Xiaomi should definitely address this.

It works effectively in Chinese rom. I really like chinese rom better than global.
What ips has to do with HDR? There are ips tv with hdr.

People are saying this is an ips panel, display does not have enough brightness, etc.
Companies have been doing HDR on cheap displays for years
The ultimate goal of HDR is having better details in dark scenes.
You can still achieve this even if the display is ips or have average brightness, but you get the side effect of somewhat duller colors
But what I see on the Mi Pad 5 is definitely some kind of a software bug or miscalibration, because it does the exact opposite of HDR, it destroys scene details bright or dark
You can throw all the brightness in the world on this and it's not going to fix it

the problem is because the price, if you xiaomi change it with an amoled screen it will easily be 100$ more. your best bet is just sell your tab 5 now and buy a lenovo p11 pro with weaker processor but better screen.
and problems all the way, read their forums, it doesn't look good.

It is a SW issue. DV and HDR is fine with just player and mpv-android. It just doesn't work on streaming platforms.
It's also weird that people point out it's only 500 nits. Many laptop displays, ipads, imacs etc have "only" 500 nits too and they do HDR and DV fine (by fine I mean no black crush issues). So xiaomi just needs to fix it asap.
