The rules are so users aren't siphoned off to some other site. Any discussion can happen here. This is the development forum.
I've seen people promote their Facebook page or YouTube channel, and it's just a ploy to make money.
You can have closed group testing off site, but don't promote those links publicly. Like, "hey, that other place is where the cool stuff if happening."
I really don't trust anything that's not on XDA, related to my phone. If it's real, it's going to be here.

yep, and that's the "classic" opensource , opendevelopment approach - that should also make sure that everyone benefits and before ran-into issues are documented and fixed
thus others don't have to figure fixes out again (re-inventing the wheel) so it can be focused on new/different issues - otherwise we'll end up at grsecurity-type development (behind closed doors).
Nothing against grsecurity - it's great, but I hate it e.g. when folks take your work and release stuff based on it (e.g. kernels) but don't release the changes back so that you can improve upon that,
which in actuality is a requirement by the GPL

[Q] Why did "The Ultimate Droid" ROM thread get shut down!

Why was this thread closed?

Usually when a mod closes it they always have the last post and have some sort of explanation as to why it is closed.

It looks like they were looking for a reason to shut him down out of some spite.
Secondly you don't have to post a smart ass comment. I understand you're shielded behind your monitor and keyboard but that doesn't mean you have to act like a jerk.
There are plenty of ROM threads with members posting stuff they shouldn't have posted. They could have simply edited the offenders post or did a temporary ban. Anyone else care to chime in?

I didn't know the thread got closed but I think its appropriate to do so.
Leaving past drama in the past I still think its wrong for someone to post a link/thread on XDA that intends to direct traffic away from XDA, requiring registration on another website in order to enjoy the author's work. If DD wanted to be part of the XDA community then he should post and, to some degree, support his work ON XDA.
I don't care wether or not his thread was shut down. I just thought the whole thing was a little shady - some guy comes out of nowhere to offer this amazing thing that this other guy has, but you can only have it if you come into the alley with him because he can't show you in the light.
That thread was hijacked with bickering back and fourth anyway.

So what... the Rom rocked.
Just register at his forum, that's what I did. I have been running the rom since day one and it is the best rom I think I have ever used. There are a few bugs here but I use it everyday and love it. Google search "the ultimate droid evo" and it's the first link.
I didn't see anyone actually answer your question.. the second time the thread was closed was because the rom contains swype.

Are you freaking kidding me! I just went to the development section and the thread is gone. This is getting really stupid.

It was shut down the first time because it linked another sign up site to download it. Second time because it included warez. Third time, may have been due to warez(ex fancy widgets) or maybe even because of the $2 monthly fee for nighties. Hell it may have just been to all the crying the tread seem to bring.

Here is where the thread was.. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849986 which now the link redirects you to the "Forum & Marketplace Rules". It was stated in the subject line that the thread was not in compliance with #8

So let me get this right... because the OP posted "If you like this ROM and would like to help further developmentLEASE DO NOT FEED THE DEVELOPER! A donation link can be found HERE" outside of his/her signature this caused the thread to get locked and it's not even the OP's rom??? Not sure I understand how #8 even applies to the thread since the rom wasn't the OP's and he was trying to stay in compliance with rule #12
12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails then you may contact a moderator with clear evidence that the work was created by you.

Which means nearly EVERY developer here is direct violation of rule #6 ("Do not post warez") of the site unless someone has posted a copy of the authorization from HTC to redistribute their software. Yes, I use custom ported roms like most of xda, and I fully support advancing development of the mobile platform. My lack of understanding is not over this, but over nitpicking "some" developers and using rules when it fits ones specific agenda. Whatever agenda that might be. I am not here to start a war with admins or mods, but to get a more clear understanding of intent. It seems not only unclear to myself but to others as well. Thanks John

a list for telegram roms

let's all come together and make a combined list of all the roms available for our device via telegram since it gets hard to find em sometimes.
we can make it with like a nice format in the main op thread here which I can update
we can have the name of the rom and if it's not against the rules of xda a link to the group as well
lemme know what you guys think
https://treskmod.ru/
^ or AOSiP (if you guys didn't see, AOSiP got support for F2FS)
Treskmod is not being updated for 7T as far as Telegram group states.
Other roms that are available are
Aosip
MSM Xtended
Omni Rom
Paranoid Android says they are going to release a build soon in the next days...but that is being since past 2 months...

@umair shaikh THREAD CLOSED!
We grant developers the privilege to provide links to their social media including Telegram in the OP of their own development threads. These conditions obviously don't apply to your thread. I realise that you haven't posted any Telegram link yet; however, this thread more or less calls for it. You assumed correctly it would be against the rules.
XDA Forum Rules again (excerpt):

You can bump your unanswered question once every 24 hours
Duplicate threads and posts will be removed
Always post in an existing thread if a topic already exists, before creating a new thread.

Ok gotcha. But I see Telegram links posted here all the time. No biggie

Question [CLOSED] Why there aren’t listed all available roms ?

I’ve noticed that on XDA there aren’t roms like CorvusRom, DerpFest, CherishOS,..
Especially CorvusRom, which seems to be really good

The decision is up to the developers.

XDA & Telegram

I'm creating this thread, but if any Senior Mods or Admins feel it would best be discussed in [All XDA Members] Feedback/Recommendations for XDA thread (I was unsure as that thread is more for suggestions & feedback, I don't know if criticism falls in the spirit of the thread) or some other more appropriate spot, please move these posts there.
Because there isn't any dedicated unlocked thread regarding the rules, policy, stance, and instances on this site (XDA) concerning (Telegram primarily; WhatsApp was mentioned once) external links that may or may not require registration to download files or public/private "channels" or how devs (there and here) deal with the policy, I am moving discussions made from THIS THREAD to a thread here devoted to the topic so it is on-topic here (rather than off-topic there) and anyone can feel free to discuss it further in a dedicated space for it.
Also, in the spirit/theme of the thread, I will also post some related materials to re-establish with an excerpt from Forum Rule 11 and the link to XDA's current rules, policy, & stance on Telegram directly below:

Yeah. If you read the policy, we allow one TG link for developers in the OP, with the condition that support and updates must be provided in the XDA thread. There's been a few developers that try to keep everything on TG, and that's the point where we consider it to be self promotion under Rule 5:
Links to an external source are only allowed if relevant to the topic in hand. A description must be included, no copy & pasting from the original source.
Self-promotion is forbidden, this includes blogs, social media and video channels etc. Random links will be removed.

Members "can link relevant information" from TG as the links (to public channels) can be opened in browser as a 'preview' (eg with /s/ inserted before the channel name).
However they "CANNOT give TG links as file sources regardless" as files cannot be downloaded without registering an account.

I think it was Oswald I discussed this with previously...
Seems you can download without Telegram "by joining a Telegram group called Files Web Downloader" or similar:
https://techlizar.com/how-to-download-telegram-files-without-telegram/
but "you’ll need to join the group and forward the downloadable link" before "they will convert the link as a fast downloadable link", but that's no good due to need to register...
Apparently a Telegram bot called GetPublicLinkBot might work per link above. "You can use it to download any large files without Telegram... This bot will generate a direct download link for any file you send it" but it didn't work in my test:

So it seems that despite the rule update and the fact that many here use Telegram to communicate or to peruse forums, we still cannot link even main Magisk test forks from principal Magisk Devs like @vvb2060's Alpha (with no GitHub published releases) or other apps etc published (for root hiding etc) there...
-------An aside: @ipdev recently made me aware of the "official XDA-Developers Telegram chat hub"... ("Here you will find links to all official XDA Telegram chat groups. The XDA-Developers Telegram chats are run by members of XDA Management with help from various trusted community members.")
https://t.me/xdadevelopershub
I couldn't find rules there against posting or linking files and many have been posted... So I wonder if an acceptable workaround for regular XDA members would be to post such files in the XDA TG General Discussion channel, then reply to that post with a reference to the app/mod like "The Alpha build is 13mb" and link that post (not a download source itself; only a source of 'pertinent information' ) from an XDA forum response to a member asking about such releases(?)...
As a for-instance, I ran early versions of Shamiko and posted on XDA about this new hiding module's development long before @nullptr gave it a public GitHub home, but I couldn't post a source for release files when members asked for it as it was only available on TG for some time...
Now (since the extinction of MagiskHide) Shamiko is a staple module for XDA Magisk users too, but it would still be taboo here if it hadn't been for @nullptr's (and @canyie's?) initiative, because of XDA policy... PW
The Telegram discussion doesn't really belong here, we (used to?) have a thread about Telegram and XDA, I'm currently trying to find it

The problem xda had was a few Devs were using XDA to promote their telegram groups and not contributing to xda at all. Several of these Devs were then selling their work on telegram. All though the xda rules are far from ideal, this is what they were trying to stop

OMG, I thought you have successfully finished the thesis on this topic, but apparently it's still on the table

Exactly. This is largely a non profit site, and the only revenue we get is from traffic on this site...so anything that directs users elsewhere is bad. That's also why we discourage self promotion, etc. The idea is that XDA and the content shared herein should be available to the general public for anyone to get useful information...not a platform to promote oneself, one's website, social media, etc.
@pndwal trying to compete with @Oswald Boelcke for the Wall of Text!
@karandpr is it still true that only channels allow free download of files, but groups require using a TG account? Or is it both?

Correct.
There is also the security perspective.
We had previous instances when some malicious actor passed malware onto devices from a telegram group.
That resulted in device bricks. Furthermore, malicious actors also cheated members of their money via crypto.
It's a reasonable line we have drawn .
