"Backlight" scene - is this one actually working ? - Sony Xperia XA2 Questions & Answers

Hi !
I really love to take pictures with my XA2, but I have noticed something quite strange.
When in "Superior Auto" phone detects the "Backlight" scene, shouldn't it trigger the HDR mode automatically ? I think it should, but it does not.
The HDR is working great in manual mode, but I haven't noticed any difference between photo with scene detected as "Backlight" and without any scene detected (just a "normal", non-hdr photo)
Is this just the case with this model, or it's "by design" ?

[Q] Front camera settings is an enigma

Not a disaster but really got me curious.
I looked everywhere. There is always a user guide for the rear camera, never for the front as far as I could find. I just want to know what is that first option in the front camera settings. What does it do? (icon of hand holding phone and an arrow)?
Take a picture with front facing camera, then bring the phone down and it will automatically show the preview of the pic you took, that's If you have it "ON".
On the other hand, if its " OFF", there is no automatic preview.
Hope it helps =)

Save quick settings for camera manual mode?

Has anyone tried to create or save any manual camera mode quick settings? For instance, something that would launch the camera in manual mode with the shutter and ISO locked in for motion photography, and another for low light photography? It seems like 90% of the time that I launch the manual camera, I'm going for one of these 2 things. It'd be convenient if most of the settings were already locked in where I want them to end up! :good:
This makes no sense to me, because the light conditions are not always the same. One setting may work in the scenario you created it, but not for another, even if they are similar. By the way, I have this function on my D7100, but I only find using it when shooting with artificial lights (speedlight).

Does the Pixel 3 have an automatic beauty setting, and if so, can I turn it off?

I have noticed that when I take a selfie, and then click on it to view it, it displays normally for a second, but then auto-blurs the selfie. I don't actually like that- I'd rather see the real image, not a beauty-filtered one. How can I turn off whatever mechanism is doing this?
Are you talking about the blur/bokeh in portrait mode or face retouching? Portrait mode will blue the background while keeping the subject in focus. There is also an icon on the top left corner of the camera that looks like a face with a star on it which adjusts face retouching. Options are off, natural or soft. This is on both camera and portrait mode.
Additionally for photos you've already taken in portrait, when viewing them in the camera roll there are two copies of the image and you can toggle the bokeh/blur on and off.

HDR playback: is it working?

Hi everybody! I'll start by saying that this forum has been really useful in the last few years, so thank you to all users that keep it alive!
I just bought a new Galaxy S20, coming from a S8, and on my old phone, when I watched a HDR video (for example, on Prime Video), the blue light filter would automatically turn off and brightness would go to the max (only while playing). Now, on S20 it is no longer the case. Even if I turn off the blue light filter, brightness can be changed with no issue. That goes beyond the purpose of HDR, which needs brightness to be all the way up. In fact, I believe HDR itself is not working. I checked with my S8 side by side and the difference is pretty clear.
Why is that? Was it the same for S9 and S10, also?
I read somewhere that screen should be set to natural (or that it automatically uses natural when viewing HDR videos), but I see no difference at all. I guess that the brightness not going up is the main cue to see if HDR playback is working or not, and - in my case - it is not. Tried also Netflix, to no avail.
May you help me with this?
Thank you!

Question Does anybody know why the HDR function can never be turned off?

I mean, I'm absolutely confused. People started complaining about this issue back in 2019. Basically, if you turn off the Auto HDR function in the camera settings, take a photo of a lit ceiling lamp for example and then open the photo, you will immediately see the photo being processed (you can see those 4 colored dots circling) and then the highlights will be turned down before your eyes. The same thing happens when enabling Auto HDR. This function is never off and has never been off since at least the S10 series. Why is Samsung ignoring this? I've tested this on five Samsung phones. I've also spoken with their support team in a live video call and shown them the photo being processed before their eyes. They made me go to warranty with the phone but EVERY Samsung phone does this )
