Thermal Throttling in Games - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Hey all..
Anyone experiencing thermal Throttling while playing games for a long period? I play long hours of pubg and mobile legends on my pixel 3 xl and after 20 mins, the phone crawls to a very low fps (under 30 for sure). Using a mobile phone attachment gamepad with cooling fans eliminates this problem
I live in tropical country, where the weather is around 28-35C. My previous phones, including pixel 2 xl, sometimes experiencing this but not as pronounced.
Is there anyway to ease up on the throttling by flashing custom kernels?

No one?

I usually dont play on mobile games, recently i installed assassin's creeds rebellion, on the phone and it runs smoothly without any cpu throttling

Yes, some custom kernels have different values in where thermal throttling kicks in. I remember there was also a Magisk mod that does the same. If you don't want to go that route you could always opt for playing with voltages and lowering clock speeds (probably not the most ideal solution). If you are hardcore you could take the phone apart and change out the thermal compound that would definitely help. Honestly is there a reason why if you already have a working solution with the gamepad that has fans? Do you have prolonged gaming sessions when you're out and about and don't want to use the attachment? If no I wouldn't bother doing anything I mentioned and just stay as is!

Sold my not pink pixel 3 xl at the same price as I got it lol. Bought one clearly white, same throttling... So it's definitely not a defect.
Problem with the cooling gamepad is that it's too bulky and not convenient to bring everywhere..
So sad.. Pixel 2 xl was definitely better in sustained performance

Sadly it's just how the heat dissipation will be by design. The Pixel 2 has better heat dissipation since the body is made of metal vs glass so it has the advantage there already. Google could rectify this by using better thermal paste or even adding say a graphite cooling pad in there to help heat dispersion. If you're into hardcore mobile gaming and it's your main passion I would say go get the Asus ROG phone. Or stay with what you have and unfortunately just deal with decreased performance until you can sit around with the attachment .

How hot does your OG PRO GET?

I'm trying to figure out if the heat levels I'm getting are the norm...after heavy gaming like, arcane legends I'm usually around 115°F...
Is that excessively high or about the average for gamming???

Does your screen dim when you reach that temperature level?
A little, at around 110°F-115°F it might drop from 100% to about 85 or 90%...

What app are you guys using to get your temps. Does it give core or gpu or battery temperature? Thanks in advance
So I played avengers for about 45 minutes, all I could take of it lol. my temp got up to 94º F in antutu temp monitor and very quickly returned to normal afterwards. The case was slightly warm but not uncomfortable. I have a screen protector but no case atm (in the mail). Not sure how much that will affect temperatures. So 94 is not uncommon after gaming on phones. Quad Core control was disabled in battery settings when I played as well. And the room temp is around 71. I was not charging while playing. I suspect that would raise temps a lot as this phones rapid charge creates heat. What were your conditions while your temp was so high?

------Reply to Your Inquiry-------
Dear Eric,
Thank you for contacting LG Electronics US. I will gladly assist you.
While browsing and gaming your battery life will be drained faster and will need to demand more energy from the device which is usual since a mobile device is not built in with a fan to cool the internal hardware and processor. In these cases you must remove the battery and leave it out for a couple of seconds however these overheating issues will still be concerning you as I stated this will happen when the device needs more energy for certain functions as the ones previously mentioned.
If you do have concerns you are able to send your device in for repair and only pay for shipment. We will inspect the device and repair it free of charge if it is covered by the warranty.
I hope this information is helpful, please do not hesitate to contact us back if you have any other inquiry. I will gladly assist you. Please enjoy the rest of the day and I wish you the best!
Respectfully,
Aimee H.

Does the OnePlus 3 get extremely hot to the touch?

Everywhere I looked they said that the OnePlus 3 has the least thermal throttling and best sustained performance of any phone out there. But nobody discussed why exactly it did not throttle while other phones did. Everyone simply said "Oh they must have very good thermal management or something". Then I saw a video comparing the temperatures of the ZTE axon 7 and the OnePlus 3 (google "Zte axon 7 vs OnePlus 3 antutu thermal throttling"), it turns out the reason the OnePlus 3 doesn't throttle isn't some magical thermal dissipation and management, it's solely because they raised the temperature at which the phone would throttle to beyond comfortable zones. In the video with just a few iterations of Antutu CPU test, the OnePlus 3 metal skin's temperature reached a scorching 47 degrees Celcius. Google shows that holding anything metal at 50 degrees Celcius for more than a brief moment can cause tissue damage (1st degree burns). And this phone was just shy of that temperature during Antutu's benchmarks when only the CPU was running, so can you imagine what temperatures it would reach when you're playing a highly graphical game where both CPU and GPU are being taxed at the same time? Why does nobody talk about this?

No actually Hearthstone is not a demanding game at all, not even remotely. In fact an iphone 4 could run it without busting a sweat. And many games can actually be more stressful than a benchmark because you would be running both CPU and GPU at the same time and would likely be running the GPU at 100%. Most GPU benchmarks run the GPU at 100% too but without using the CPU at the same time.
A non issue imo

I can't figure out why the hell that idiot in the video used real racing as a benchmark. Do these people even know what a GPU or CPU is?
Anyway, that video is not reliable, especially since the OnePlus 3 uses a 1080p display and has to push far less pixels than those other phones, that game does not tax the phone's hardware in any way shape or form.
The CPU starts throttling at 75°C like pretty much any other phone out there... This thing just dissipates heat better than any other Android phone out there which is why the chassis heats up a bit more. Don't worry it doesn't get that hot at all

The fact that there's a lot of us out here using the phone, but as far as I've seen zero reports of people getting burnt by hot phones, in. Y experience it stays way cooler to the touch than either of my last two phones (Xperia z2 and Samsung s3).

Moving from Galaxy S7

So my Galaxy S7 is water damaged, and I need a phone to last for me for approximately another year. Would moving to the Nexus 5X be a good choice? It would save me some money if I get this instead of the OnePlus 3, which doesn't have warranty as it is sold third party only.

I've never used an S7, but you'll likely notice a drop in both. Depending on what you do, you'll definItely notice a difference in performance when this phone heats up. If you play games often, you'll notice it. If you live in a warm climate, you'll notice it. The CPU throttles aggressively after a certain temperature or below about 20% battery charge. I still think it's a solid phone, especially with the software and dev community. I just know it has limits and they can be deal breakers.

I notice the thermal throttling every time I go outside (checking with EXKM) however I only travel and use Google Maps when the weather is the warmest each day. I'm not doing much else in high heat since I work indoors. If I worked outdoors, I'd probably hate this phone lol The phone runs fine when you don't expose it to too much heat.

Ha, I'd say go for it but measure your expectations. SOT hovers around 2-4 hours for most people, I'd say average. Throttling is an issue but one you can tweak somewhat through guides. Speaker volume is weak but can be tweaked if you install a custom kernel. My complaints are: speaker volume, throttling, and desire for a larger battery. I just web browse, text, surf XDA, and use Google Maps. It's a plastic phone which doesn't bother me, but it may bother you coming from a metal phone. It's a solid phone overall. Plus, we get updates quickly.

Plastic doesn't really bother me, build quality comes dead last to me in a list of priorities, as I always put my phone in a case anyway. Battery life is what concerns me the most, and the fact that it uses USB C instead of micro further adds insult to injury. The update speed does tempt me though...

Question Bad overheating on 4g gaming

Google Tensor SoC And Pixel 6 Benchmarks Show Google’s Intentions For Building Its Own SoC
Senior Analyst, Mobility & VR, Anshel Sag, dives deeper as Google claimed that nobody in the market was creating chips that satisfied Google’s needs for AI performance, so they created their own and I’ve had an opportunity to test the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro’s tensor SoC.
www.forbes.com
"As you can sort of tell from the graph, the Pixel 6 Pro throttled its GPU performance by over 50% at 58.3% while the Pixel 6 throttled at a more moderate 45%. The other Snapdragon 888 devices throttled anywhere from 24 to 36%. However, the Pixel 5 only throttled by 0.7% and the Redmagic 6S Pro with its active cooling only throttled an equally impressive 1%. To me, this means that Google’s GPU performance, while initially impressive, does have issues with longer term use and isn’t really viable for anything other than limited bursty GPU workloads. This means that gaming performance on the Pixel 6 Pro is worse than most of the flagship phones and the Pixel 6 is roughly on par."

I really struggle to find the perfect overall android phone, I realllly don't wanna move to an iPhone but there a solid solid phone, hopefully Google can fix these issues, I really wanna like this phone.
Google will probably fix the throttling issues by lowering coreclocks all together, but in the end Tensor is probably just not good enough in terms of efficiency/temps to satisfy a hardcore/gaming user.
I'm afraid the P6 comes as close to the perfect overall android phone as it can get, even though it still lacks in some departments. There might be some alternatives in terms of pure gaming performance, but they will lack in other departments, meaning overall they will (aswell) not satisfy.

Question Oneplus 11 overheating / poor gaming performance

Just got my Oneplus 11 CPH2451 on the A09 build and I'm seemingly running into quite a bit of overheating on the device. Wondering if anyone else is running into the same issue.
From all accounts and various reviews this phone is suppose to run fairly cool especially with the 8 Gen 2 chipsets. But it heats up just booting up (cpu hitting 70+ degrees) and will feel pretty warm to the touch.
Gaming wise, running Brawlstars, which shouldn't be a graphic intensive game, for prolongs periods of time (15 mins+) will cause the cpu to hit 80+ degrees and battery to 40+ with the phone getting visibly hot and starting to thermal throttle. Even before that kicks in, game will frequently experience bouts of fps drops from 100+ to 60 and this is with forced 120Hz turned on.
I've tried resetting the phone and going back to A06 build and still experience the same overheating problem. Tried various geekbench and wildlife benchmark and it is getting comparative scores as other reviews so the phone should be peforming up to par.
All this is coming from an OP8T with the nameless rom which runs the game super smooth and does not heat up crazily like the OP11. This makes it all the more frustrating as the newer phone with the newer chipset seems to perform worse across the board. In many ways it seems like OOS13 is just poorly optimized and a better kernel and OS will fix the problem.
Also tried the same game on S23U (same 8 Gen 2 chipset) and it ran as cool as a cucumber.
A quick google search does not net much overheating issues on the OP11 so I'm wondering if this is specific to my device.
Anyone suggestions as to how to alleviate the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Well it sounds like you have a defective vapor chamber with temps that high unless your ambient is quite high too so see if you can file a warranty claim.

Vapor chambers can be defective straight from the factory. Just ask AMD 7900XTX owners dealing with the issue on their new $1K+ video cards.

80° cpu and 40° battery temp when you play
But let's ask how warm it is in your area (ask them because, for example, many people from India complain but do not take into account that it is sometimes 38-40c° warm in India, which means that the battery and cell phone in general are already very warm and thus much earlier the thermal engine throttles because there is not much air left)

This is in LA, so around 50-70 F or 10-20C. CPU runs at fairly okay temperature around 30-40C for normal day to day use (texting, redditing...). It's just a stark contrast from my OP8T or S23U since I pretty much don't notice those phones heating up but with OP11 I can consistently feel it gets warm.
My experience has been that this phone stays cool all the time no matter what I am doing.. Even Genshin maxed out.

Thanks for sharing! I was able to get my hands on a second OP11, ran brawlstars on it and the phone heats up almost exactly the same way with similar temperature measurements. Maybe the game is just poorly optimized on OOS13.
Also tried transferring apps and data over and CPU hit over 70+ degrees as well. Looks like the temps im seeing is normal unless somehow I got my hands on back to back defective units.

The best solution i can give u is to buy a peltier cooler i.e Oneplus 18W freezing point, Oneplus 11 has a very good passive cooling and with a good peltier you wont have such issues

thanks for the solution but dont think i do enough serious gaming on the phone to warrant a cooler. Just a bit disappointed and surprised at the overheating and throttling despite oneplus touting it having one of the better cooling systems out there. Since it happened on both OP11 I got my hands on, I'm going to attribute this to more of a software than hardware issue as other phones with same chipsets don't seem to have overheating problems.
