Pixelated/Jagged Video Issue with Redmi Note 5 Pro (Facebook, Instagram, Twitch) - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi I just got my Redmi Note 5 Pro, everything works fine but one thing that I'm really frustrated with is when I'm watching videos (not photos) on native apps like Facebook, Instagram or Twitch, the video is super pixelated and horrendous even at highest quality chosen. However, when I try to visit these sites on browser (Chrome) and watch the video, everything works fine, the quality is perfect. Here is some sample screenshots that I've taken: https://imgur.com/a/BwyBL3z (notice the pixelated and border of the text, it's actually horrible)
And here is my phone specs (About phone): https://imgur.com/a/vhg2OY1
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this because of MIUI 10 or some problems with my phone?
More information: Youtube and Twitter in-app video seems to work fine, at least visually to my eyes. By the way, please don't tell me it's the internet issue because my internet is great and everything loads at highest quality option. Thanks for reading.

I think its a software issue and it sucks, try uploading something in Instagram (instagram stories) and experience the 3 fps video and the worst quality ever, I dont know why this happens, but I'm thinking of selling my xiaomi redmi note 5 pro, for these tiny but very important problems for me.

For the Instagram:
It is software issue, but not hardware-software problem, its more like software-rom problem, because i used to experience that too, atleast for the Instagram. But..... it was when i use MIUI 10, right after i tried custom rom, (i use PE) the problem is gone, and Instagram is capable to upload at the highest quality too (2k @ 60fps). So the conclusion is that, instagram not fully optimized for MIUI yet, because it has a lot of bugs in it. by the way, if you really wanted to fix that ig problem and dont want to change rom, i can suggest you to try GBinsta (look it up at google search you can find one), i dont know why, using the modded apk seems to work better at MIUI. So good luck, have a nice day :good:

Thanks for the advice. I tried Instagram version 51 and the upload quality is superb, and it sucks that such a great spec'd phone has so tiny annoying problems I even sent bug reports to Xiaomi via e-mail and didn't get a single reply, before this phone I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, and the camera in snapchat was HORRIBLE to say the least. I think android in general has these problems, because when I use my friends iPhone 6S Plus, the picture quality or video quality in every app is superb, and video quality in apps like IG or Facebook is superb too. Literally thinking about switching to iPhone even though I love the freedom of android.
Thanks for your reply.

slightly off topic but i've noticed photos i share in facebook messenger look very jagged , especially screenshots .

[Q] video very grainy Note II

Hey everyone
Has anyone noticed or is it just me, the camera app looks perfect on the screen when its on picture.
If I slide it to video it becomes grainy with a lot of noise.
Its a huge difference between the quality of the two.
The noise is visable in the playback of the video.
I was trying to convert my iphone brother to android and he laughed at how much better his video was.
Any ideas or anyone experianced the same?
anyone or is it just me
I've been having a similar issue with my T-Mobile Note II! For some reason while the camera is running, a photo is displayed, or a video is playing, the screen renders everything kinda grainy. I thought it was my imagination, but when I open up a menu, all the icons and options look different too, they don't look smooth anymore, and the color is off. Kind of like a bad jpeg. It's even more noticeable when I use the pop up player, it effects everything I'm doing on the screen until I close the video.
This only happens while content is being displayed, though. When browsing the gallery or scrolling through my video list everything looks fine, until I open something. What's even weirder is this only happens in Samsung's camera, gallery, and video apps. Using any different media app to display content (I tested Camera Zoom FX, MX Player, File Expert, ect.) doesn't cause this at all. It sounds very software specific. I'm not sure if you've tried using a different video player besides the stock app, but try it and see if it looks the same.
I went to T-Mobile and replaced my phone yesterday, thinking it was just me, but the new one is doing it too -_-. You're the first person on any of the forums who seems to have noticed the same thing, lol. I was beginning to think I was going crazy

Tab S 10.5 YouTube Video Stuttering

Hi guys, I recently bought a galaxy tab s 10.5 and I'm having issues with video playback in the native YouTube app. Basically every 5-10 seconds, I would get a micro stutter, as if the video is slightly jittery. It's definetely not buffering as the video has loaded well ahead already too.
I am using the samsung stock OS so 4.4.2 and I have installed all the latest official updates for both the OS and the Youtube app.
I have also tried a factory reset of the machine, clearing the cache and updates for the Youtube app and reinstalling. I've also tried forced GPU rendering and turning off hardware overlays in developer mode
Does this indicate there's an issue with my hardware ? It does not happen when i stream videos from my PC over wifi or any locally downloaded videos. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hmmm, never had this problem with mine when it was on stock. I usually had this problem when I underclocked my cpus and all that or when I am using to many appps.
The only thing I can suggest is use another app (viral popup https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Mata.YTplayer ) or take it back to be safe.

Thanks, yep the youtube videos would stutter even when i freshly restarted the tablet so nothing else really is running in the background. I have tried the viral popup app except it seems to play at a really low quality setting, ,ie 1080p is not available ?
Is there anything I can test to see if its a possible hardware issue ? I ran the Antutu benchmark and got 37k which seems in line for what's expect from this tablet. Does this help rule anything out ? Thanks.
Check processes, there's probably something in the background.

I dont think so. When you play games does it lag too? Ex real racing 3 etc? Because if it cant play youtube without the micro lag, that may affect other apps. I dont get any lag while I was on stock.
If any other apps lag while playing (not on loading screens) then it may be an issue. I never had any micro lag on mine so it may vary on how you see it. Of course we have custom roms that are way smoother (CM12) but I am unsure if your issue is hardware related or the way you see it. Hope this helps!
I got youtube stuttering too for months on my TabS ST800, I tried every tricks in dev options, nothing ever changed .
But one day i tried the CARDBOARD view in the YouTube app options and then return to normal 2D view.... motion became butter smooth up to 1440p60, for any video! If closing youtube app and restarting it, it is stuttering again, until opening again the cardboard view.
Here is a test video I used to validate stutter-free playback :

Good luck.

You, sir, are awesome!!! I had this problem for the last couple of months on my Tab Pro 10.1, tried everything to eliminate it. Going back to Stock or GraveD rom was slightly better but not really smooth either. I was beginning to lose my sanity switching back and forth between CM11, CM12.1 and stock-rom, trying different developer-options but was not completely satisfied in the end. This cardboard-step is a temporary fix i can definitely live with. But I'm surprised that not many people seem to be effected by this stuttering or they simply don't mind at all. Hope that google is going to fix this shortcoming in the near future but meanwhile...Thanks a ton mister :good:!

I was so happy too I spent a night watching again many videos I love ! I'm glad I could share that little joy !
To answer your question, it is a shame that people are suffering from the belief that "online" videos on computer, tablets or phone *must* somewhat stutter. Well ... even trans-galactic communications in Star Wars/Trek and other sci-fi movies are depicted with stutter and even analog (!) video sync and lines issues (in 2150!!). Stutter and other digital disorders have been imprinted in the modern culture because not much effort was given to understand (and implement) that we human are analog creatures requiring a natural constant flow of sound and light, not a "best effort" variable low frame sample rate due to "unavoidable" system interrupts between storage, cpu, gpu and screen. Remarkably, Apple hardware/software was always close to perfection due to their close collaboration with the computer graphics industry for tv and movies..
It is indeed so much enjoyable when colors, contrast, motion of a clean picture hit the brain which then do not have to interpolate, filter dynamically and overcome an unpleasant stressfull and therefore tiring "motion picture"
So far only Sony with its X1 graphical processor in TVs is IMO able to achieve a minimum of digital artefacts while interpolating and displaying moving pictures. HD was a attempt to increase resolution (but we lost many qualities that the oldest of us enjoyed with CRT tubes). UHD must bring "better pixels" back with constant higher frame rate, higher pixel resolution and higher color resolution and dynamic range.
I hope to say bye bye soon to "flicks" = flickering judderish stuttering color-ish moving pictures.

Video - bad quality, faces blurred. What's the problem?

I just noticed a huge problem with 1080p video from my Mi Max 3 (original rom 6/128). Faces are totally blurred and flattened, huge quality problems. It looks the same in the phone itself then playing back. Why??? I don't want to root it but still have to shoot 1080p30 with image stabilization. Are there alternatives for stock camera app that can do that and don't crap out like that?
This is the link to example video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/e7gSKxykBVtXL5pW9
That is strange, have you tried video elsewhere
All videos from yesterday are like this. I didn't try anything else. It was cold but not too cold. I don't see anything in the settings that could have resulted in this... Why are those blobs there instead of faces? Weird... Older videos seem fine, however there was a recent firmware update...
Photos from the same day at the same time are also like this! But other photos are fine... I'm starting to think it was some kind of condensation on the glass or temperature affecting sensor or something like that, although it wasn't that cold, maybe -8C. Other person shooting on iphone got fine photos and videos. Weird...

Summary: An intermittent stutter or lag (most notably during fullscreen 4K HDR playback, in my case) which only goes away when you activate certain screen recorder applications like Game Tools or AZ Screen Recorder.
Below is a list of posts that highlight this problem that I and a few others are experiencing. The common denominator here is the use of a screen recorder, which removes any present stutter or lag.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/lag-stutter-overall-choppy-t3914381
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/btwfbl/anyone_experiencing_stuttering_or_frame_drops_on/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b79cw3/is_snapdragon_really_that_much_worse_than_exynos/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b4nftn/snapdragon_s10_laggy_on_4k_youtube_playback/ (video evidence of problem)
The following two are from myself. My problem is that all 4K HDR content (could extend to other formats also but I need to do more testing) is stuttering or dropping frames. Screen recorder on and boom - it's smooth.
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/ch172q/snapdragon_owners_does_this_type_of_video_play/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/sm-g9750-video-playback-throttled-t3950757
The lag returns as soon as you deactivate screen recording, which suggests that this is either a bug with the CPU or GPU not being optimized or boosting its frequencies properly, leading to these stutters.
I've put Snapdragon in the title as these posts all appear to be from Snapdragon owners, whether it's the US or HK variant. I don't recall ever having this issue as a last generation S9 Exynos owner. If you are an S10/+/e Exynos owner and encountering this issue, you could still try using your phone normally, with a screen recorder active and then without, to see if there is any performance gain (as crazy as it sounds, it might actually make a difference).
Below is a test I'm using to demonstrate my problem. It involves installing apps (namely YouTube Vanced and either one of two screen recorders I've tested it with), so it's not the most convenient. If I find a better method, I will update the post accordingly.
You will need YouTube Vanced. I'm suggesting Vanced because the original YouTube app doesn't let you view at 4K resolution.
Firstly, open Vanced and tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Now open Game Launcher, tap the three dots in the upper right > Add apps and add YouTube Vanced to the list. We're doing this for the screen recording function which I'll mention later.
Note: if you don't have Game Launcher or Game Tools, you can try AZ Screen Recorder as an alternative. Nice Shot does not work.
Once that's done, here's a 4K 60fps clip for you to try. It should be easier to perceive any hiccups with the higher frame rate. Please set the resolution to 2160p (tap the three dots in the upper right) and watch in fullscreen / landscape orientation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ
Panning shots work best. For reference, see points 0:19, 0:46, 1:48, 2:14, 2:42, 3:04, 4:11 and 4:41 in the video. Does it look like it's stuttering or dropping frames intermittently?.
Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar (you need the navigation bar enabled to use the recording function) and tap on Game Tools, which is the leftmost button. Tap Record.
While the screen is recording, are the stutters now gone? To my eyes, the video plays back perfectly while the recorder is active.

Well if you have a better solution then I'm all ears? I left a similar post in the Q&A section and didn't receive a single reply. So I thought I'd post it here instead since it's more active.
We're still in the "Guides, News, & Discussion" forum, right? And technically this could even be a guide since I posted a solution, no matter how useless it may be
What resolution are playing those videos at?
I played the Peru 4k 60 @1080P one on youtube and it was great. Then played the same on Vance 1440 @60fps and it was same smoothness.

[email protected] is where I experience constant stutter. You will need to override resolution checks in Vanced to watch at that resolution: Tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Don't forget to try it with the screen recorder on please, to compare if playback is smoother.
Just realized you're on Exynos, so the issue might not pertain to you, though there's a chance I might be wrong in that regard. Thanks for testing though - more feedback is always welcome :good:

Lizard brain saw the GB flag and assumed you were an Exynos owner - my mistake! So you debloated your phone huh? Is something like Nice Shot or AZ Screen Recorder an option?
Here's a link for anyone wanting to download and test locally:

or
http://www.mediafire.com/file/dzndenwhk6ddboc/COSTA_RICA_IN_4K_60fps_HDR_%28ULTRA_HD%29.mp4/file
You will also need a screen recorder of some sort though, that's the most important step. Here's a few:

https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsung-electronics-co-ltd/nice-shot/

update: Nice Shot doesn't work for this test.
Appreciate anyone else willing to try, of your own volition of course. Doing this purely to raise awareness on the issue and gather feedback.
I just tested this using the supplied download links for the actual video and AZ screen recorder.
In all honesty I couldn't see any difference between the video running with or without the screen recorder recording it. They both looked smooth. I was using the default video player to watch the downloaded video.

That looks like the Samsung video player, but no matter since the problem persists across other players too. MX Player in HW decoding seems to be the worst performing one for me.
Did you watch in landscape fullscreened? I keep forgetting to add that detail. If it was the same regardless, then I guess that removes the US Snapdragon from the equation. But thanks for taking the time to test, much appreciated :good: People probably think I'm bullshitting but once I find a concrete way to show what I'm experiencing, I will update this thread.
So far I've only had confirmation of this problem from two (yes, only two but it's still something!) other people, and they also happen to be owners of the HK S10+ variant like myself. If there are any other HK owners out there, I could really do with your feedback on this too!

Yes , I watched it in landscape mode, even compared the first few scenes where the camera pans etc with screen recorder on and off, couldn't tell the difference.
Maybe you could film the issue with a camera for us to see ?

Mx player with hardware decoding is no problem, smooth as butter. Snapdragon U1.
What does YouTube report with nerd stats turned on for the dropped frames line?
No offense but your premise is flawed at best. All you have done is made a subjective claim backed up by no legitimate measurable evidence..
Having people install screen recorders and play videos is not 'testing' anything..
Best of luck

That's been tried by someone already but the thing with these cross-comparisons is that they aren't conclusive enough for some people. For me it's crystal clear because I already know what to look for.
Here, this link was in the OP: https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b4nftn/snapdragon_s10_laggy_on_4k_youtube_playback/
One on the left is HK S10+, Exynos S9+ on the right. Make sure it's in [email protected] so it's as clear as possible.
The most obvious thing is that the scrolling is laggy on the HK model, but if you look closely, the video is stuttering too (look at the zooming out shot at the beginning). Exynos is completely smooth.
Stuttering video is a big no-no for me, really should not be happening on a phone of this spec.

Okay fair enough my test isn't the most thought out, but if you have any better suggestions on how to demonstrate the problem, you're more than welcome to provide them.
Stats for nerds doesn't show dropped frames, so it's likely that any FPS monitoring software would be useless too.
No it's not a subjective claim because if you read through the post and links in full, you would see a number of people confirming the problem. Doesn't matter how few, it's still an issue that shouldn't be ignored.
And one of the links has evidence in the form of video comparison: https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b4nftn/snapdragon_s10_laggy_on_4k_youtube_playback/ please watch it @ 1080p60 on something larger than a phone screen.
The one thing I should've probably clarified is that I'm on the HK S10+, but those links indicate that US variants have a similar issue too. If yours doesn't have it, then cool, you're good to go :good:

Stuttering video is a big no-no for me, really should not be happening on a phone of this spec.

So now we're talking about the scrolling when the video is played minimized like the reddit video? Yes mines like the same laggy. But the video itself full screen is ok.

Not the scrolling specifically because that's related to the problem. For me the scrolling is laggy AND the video stutters. Are you sure the video is completely smooth? It might seem so but on mine there are frame drops present - even if it's very minor, there should be none at all.
It's best to compare with another capable device side-by-side with your own eyes, as no video recording will be able to demonstrate this clearly enough. There's also a chance that some people aren't sensitive enough to stutters and might not even be able to perceive them (I'm not saying you are, this could genuinely not be happening on your device).
And even if the video doesn't appear to be stuttering to you, shouldn't the laggy scrolling be enough cause for concern? A last gen phone is running smoother and that's not acceptable. Don't settle for mediocrity guys.
edit: before anyone questions the absence of screen recording in that video, the person who uploaded it has another post on reddit where he mentions it fixing the problem.

Watching it at 1440p on native YouTube app it seems the scrolling is smooth. But on Vanced @2140 not so smooth scrolling. Probably the Vanced app or cpu etc binning on the snapdragon.

I don't think it's the app or hardware because once I turn on the screen recorder, playback is perfect (landscape). I'm no expert on this but a logical guess means there's a frequency boost while the recorder is active, removing the stutters.
If I could find a less ****ty workaround that does the same, I would be okay with it, but there isn't
No lag here. My phone has been flawless. SD

Question Bad quality when taking a photo in instagram

Hi! i dont know if is my phone that is broken or me, i dont know. When you open the instagram camera, the quality is ok, but when you do a photo, it loses a lot of quality, like if it wad blurry. Can someone help me?
The real reason Snapchat photos taken on Android phones look terrible
Android phones often have similar or better cameras than iPhones. But on Snapchat, it’s not even close. Here's why.

It says snapchat but it's actually true for instagram and whatsapp as well

try update Instagram to latest version
I don't know exactly why that happens.. maybe it's a compatibility issue.
But the solution to that is: you have to take the pictures with your standard camera app, then upload it to Instagram. This way you will preserve your picture quality. ♥

idk if its new to you but taking pictures from third party apps (whatsapp, office, facebook etc...) always end up crappier than the camera app
Its actually because these apps compress image thats why, No worry.
