Is it still worth it to get an HTC 10 in 2019? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I'm currently running an HTC One M8 and it's on its last dying breath. I'm looking for something to replace it in the 200-300$ with and isn't really impressed by the Build quality and design of anything TBH. (the Nokia 7 plus seems like the best option from the new ones so far). so I had the idea of looking for old flagships instead and remembered how much I wanted to have the 10 back when it came out. looking around I'm seeing it being sold anywhere from 150 to 300$ new.
Here's my Question, how is the 10 holding up in 2019, do the specs have any life in them? are the heating and the battery still a problem or not? and if you Do recommend it would it make sense to get a new one or used?
(sorry if this is the wrong place make this post, I looked around and this seemed like the most logical place)

New or used doesn't make much difference, most devices are at least 2 years old and either used or on a shelve in a box. My advice, look for another device with more or better battery capacity. Although i truly love my htc10 which i will continue to use for at least another 6-9 months and maybe longer i would advice now to look for a different device.
A year / a year and a half ago my advice would be very different

Good point, I'm currently looking into the Poco f1 but I'm a bit worried about the build quality since the last Xioami phone I got failed on my quite terribly within the first year. also going from metal to plastic will probably be big downgrade...

You may want to consider the u11 as well, as they sometimes go for 300$ which appears to be in your budget.

If you are worried about build quality of the Poco, check out the Mi8 Lite. It is all glass with aluminum edge. Just picked oneup last week Love it so far, with the exception of having to wait 15 days before the bootloader can be unlocked.

the Average price for one seems to be 375 and the cheapest deal I've found was 325$, will keep it in mind though.

Not a fan of glass backs or No 3.5 jacks. the specs are close to the Nokia 7 plus. which I would probably choose over it due to the mentioned reasons and it being Andriod one.

I was strongly considering the Nokia 7 to tide me over until the U13/Pixel/Oneplus7 get revealed, but then crossed it off my list after reading multiple people having issues with horribly slow fingerprint unlock on the latest software.

I found a decent deal on a U11 for 330 Canadian dollars, which is around 250usd. That's why I was mentioning it.

Im in the exact same situation atm and i just cant find any new phone that i would buy. Sure there are some nice phones but there is always something i really dislike about them. I am on my scratched m8 with dying battery and it continues to just annoy me. I also want to be on the newest android but than there are so many bugs and features like nfc pay just dont work.
I thought about a htc 10 cause i really liked htcs phones (Had the HD2 and the One Mini and loved both aswell as the m8). I think the 10 was the last good phone htc made so i dont like the u11.
Idk maybe the 10 isnt that bad of an idea...

the HTC 10 is only good if you find one with a good battery. I have problems that the battery drowns very fast and random shutdowns when I'm under 40% or so and open the camera.

I upgraded from the M7, you can't go wrong either way. The M7 was the best smart phone I've ever had but I like to have the latest things so I took the plunge for the M8. The two very small gripes with my M7 were the purple tint issue and the battery life. After 8+ months of ownership I was only just getting a day on battery if that on light/moderate usage. The M8s battery life is 40% better than the M7 so that is a huge increase. The purple tint issue has also been fixed. It's not a huge upgrade and if I were tight on money I could EASILY of kept the M7 till 2015. Your choice. This might get locked as it's a phone comparison thread but hey ho.
Thanks for your thoughts.. I agree about the battery. 12 months on I can certainly see the decay.
I hope this doesn't get locked as it is useful to those like me who have the previous model and are debating to upgrading to the next generation.
I understand comparison threads being closed, but this is discussing the same manufacturer and practically the same model, just the upgraded version. Normally flame wars happen between other OEMs like Samsung and HTC.
I imagine this thread would be useful to others who are undecided on wether to splash out of commit for another 2 years on a device that may in the real world seem just the same as the M7
Hope we can keep this discussion going!:fingers-crossed:
i am!

Same as me. I had a play with one at the O2 store today. Gotta say... its the finest looking mobile phone I've ever seen. Gun metal grey is defo the best. I'm thinking of getting one from Three tomorrow on PAYG. £459!
but I have an M7 and its in perfect condition and will have Sense 6 soon making almost the same as the M8. Is it really worth spending the money???
Have a DE on order. Loved the M7. Best phone I have ever had. Can't wait for the phone to arrive.
Yes that's exactly my predicament.. £470 for.... Looks.. which you can't see when your holding it.. a depth sensor.. and that's it really... Isn't it?
And Sense 6 coming soon.. well already here really, had it on yesterday for a while, but not officially out yet.
But.. I do want one. That's a lot of nice things I could get for my motorbike though lol.
I have T-Mobile JUMP, so I'll be trading in my M7 for the M8.
As of right now, I have another $300 to go before my M7 is paid off. On ebay, a used M7 goes for around $250.. and then you minus some shipping and ebay fees.
Definitely not worth it for me to just stick with the M7.

How exactly does JUMP work? I'm eligible for it now as well but obviously haven't used it before. Do you ever get to have both phones at the same time so you can transfer information, or do you literally go in the store with one phone and come out with the other?

You have to backup everything because you will never have both phones at the same time. You literally bring the old phone to the store, they inspect it for screen and water damage, they set up the new phone for you (they'll set up your GMail and sync the two for you) and then you walk out.
And yes, as soon as T-Mobile gets it in store, I'm using my JUMP for it. There's no reason not to since if I don't like it I can just use my second JUMP credit to trade it for something else (which I will consider doing when the 805 devices roll out).

That makes sense. What if you do the process online? I'm wondering if they would send you the device then you could take your current device to the store to trade it in.

It's not just the mah that matters. You have the more efficient SoC, better optimizations... Stuff like that.

Not sure if its actually 40% (could you link to source?) but I've definitely read that the M8 gets better battery life than the M7 from several reviews.
Well, i will get mine soon. Thanks to all SkyDragon user via donation! Max, butterfly, hox and m7 users.
I couldn't keep my hox, should sell it to get m7... But this time its different, i keep m7 and will get m8.
Why? Mostly for cooking reasons. All my team has m7 and today 6 of them has also m8.
The rest will jump soon too, we are like 40 hahaha.
I love design, sense 6, well.. All.
Doesn't mean m7 is old, i still very happy with it. But also want to taste new m8. Im curious about dot case and sense 6.
About battery, m7 got good battery, screen, best devs and roms. And soon m8.
Btw,i will release our first SkyDragon rom soon, if someone wants to join my team to be tester, or has code skilz or theming skilz, just pm.
Well done HTC, again best phone of the year! No doubt.
Have to state that. If i should keep my m7 only, im Happy too as we are getting Sense 6 soon, also dot cover
Literally just upgraded from the M7 two hours ago. Wow. Seriously just wow. I just tried out the camera, the effects are really cool. It is super mega smooth. The new SoC is very power efficient and fast. Definitely feels better too. Also glad to be rid of the purple camera tint.

Did no-one buy this phone or is it too new?
If its the former we need to get a PSA going about how great the phone is so people buy more, if its the latter I suppose we should just wait...
I think it's just because it's relatively new. It only went on sale this week in my country. But hey, if you want to spice things up, go ahead and post something!

Oh the pressure!
It's new and in the US here its only available on one carrier and most people are waiting on the M9 flagship phone. We also don't have s-off so we cant do any fun mods really. Honestly it's a M8 in plastic with water proofing and different cameras so its nothing groundbreaking. I wouldnt expect much out of this fourm

Yes, it's almost M8, so it would be pretty easy to port some M8 ROMs to the EYE, GPE ROM for example. I would do that if I had any tutorials. But I haven't found any.
Im waiting also on some custom rom,but nobody take care till now about this device.I will try to ask Venom team cos they make the best custom roms.

I wouldnt say it's easy by any means especially since most HTC Devs on this site do not own the device and with the different cameras come different drivers it makes things harder.

Yeah I thought the same thing but for the moment in my option, due to the fact that it is an At&t exculsive it will take some time before people outside this carrier obtains it. Unless, you are like me and decided to purchase it unlocked; which is not a bad idea if you ask me. Additionally, since this phone is new and HTC has promised that it will be supporting devices like the M8,Desire EYE and new devices with updates and fixes for the next 2 years I personally will not be bothered with rooting my device. Besides, we are soon due to get Android 5.0 directly from the source so why not wait and enjoy the direct updates from HTC because after 2.5 years we will be on our own.
After 2 years, which I would most likely still have it in excellent order will then decide to root it and add a custom rom on it.
But dont worry, you are not alone in buying this phone. It is an amazing device that in more cases than one is much better,on the same spec stage and cheaper than the M8.
I recently received my desire eye. I won it on HTC elevate though. Awesome program. But I see that it isn't a very popular option. Since I'm on Verizon mine will be used mostly as a WiFi device. I can day that once lollipop gets here you will really like it. Dttw works perfectly

Yes this is an absolutely amazing phone, I had a Moto X, then tried WinMo with the Nokia 930 and then went to thi, its the best phone ive ever owned, brilliant performance, great battery life, awesome connectivity, the only downside could be its physical size, not a problem for a big guy like myself but if you have small hands and small pockets you wont find this phone easy to use.

Going to buy LG G4, Need some guidance.

My opinion would be to buy a G3 or Moto X Pure, if you're looking for something on the cheaper end. G4 is a mess.
If extra cash isn't an issue I'd say wait and check out the HTC 10 tomorrow. The Huawei Mate 8 looks sweet, too, if you can find one.
A lot of boot loop issues with early production models. It may not be the case with later production models, but these boot loop issues take 5-8 months to show. If you are buying brand new, make sure you have at least a 12 month warranty.

I had am M9 for less than a week. It's a beautiful phone that functioned fine but it got hot fast. I had GPS on for maybe five minutes and the phone got hot enough for me to feel it on my leg through my jeans. Very warm. If you can handle that, it's a nice phone.

If I may throw my hat in the ring, I have a G4 and am quite dissatisfied. I am getting a Nexus for my next phone and I suggest you take a good look at them as well.
G4 is a beautiful device it does as commands and is loyal. I bought mine recently and it looks elegant with brown leather. Yes it had hardware failure with 505 and i did get mine keeping that in mind. I own a 512 EU H model. Rooted. Works as a charm. Still optimus has its moments but
Thank god it isnt touchwiz. The camera is jewel and it paints magnificently on the patriot class 10 64gb i reserved for it. Other than that its your call.

Another vote for the nexus 6p from me. A big amoled screen with front facing speaker running the latest android is a perfect combination. It may be expensive outside the US but if u already consider the m9, the 6p won't be much of a stretch in term of budget. No sdcard and removable battery are nexus' only downsides

I was excited because I finally got a phone that wasn't trash and was expecting to get the ROMs and Kernels etc. that a flagship usually has and was lucky enough to get with lesser phones like the original LG Volt. I was quickly screwed by LG. A spectacular phone ruined by hardware problems and a locked bootloader. I won't have these problems with a Nexus, plus the price is better and it has support for GSM and CDMA networks. I can go to and from any carrier I choose while not having to wait 9 months for them to push OTAs or load my phone with trash. It is for all intents and purposes, my dream phone. The only thing missing is external storage, which may change with the next one. If you don't care about root and what not, buy a Samsung. The hardware and software are superb, unless you don't like TouchWiz of course. I don't mind OEM skins, so it doesn't bother me but some hate it. If you don't want a sammy, I would also recommend HTC flagships, they are praised by everyone I know who owns one.

Expectations can really be everything. If having complete control over the phone is the top priority, getting a Nexus is the obvious solution. Especially if you want other features like GSM/CDMA compatibility. And the quick updates are great of course.
I suppose I have the benefit of lower expectations - well, mainly in regards to the lack of an unlocked bootloader and the potential for bootloop issues (or the need for a warranty). For me, expandable storage is a must. As is having a great camera (and all the phones mentioned seemingly do). I also like the replaceable battery - as it has the potential to add long-term life to the phone. OEM skins aren't the worst thing, though TouchWiz isn't my favorite. Obviously, I would love complete control of the phone, or at least the ability to completely remove and bloatware I don't want, but most of the time I am happy enough using a launcher like Nova.
The Nexus is a little big for me as well. I'm coming from a 5" screen, so even the 5.5" on the G4 is a little big - and likely would be too big if not for the relatively small size of the phone otherwise. When I was at Best Buy recently, the S7 was definitely the best device to hold in my hand. Looks great, works great, but cost too much for me right now. Also, while this may not be a factor for everyone, the Gear VR did not meet my expectations - and certainly gave me concerns about impact on my eyes and/or brain, as well as doubtful how long the battery would last using it
In the end, ordering a G4 (with a US warranty) + case, screen protector and tax was less than $350. Sure, I won't be able to root it (at least right now), and I will always be cautious about the bootloop occurring, but that seems like a great deal for less than half the price of the S7, and $200+ less than a Nexus.

Good luck. I hope you like it.

Should I buy?

I'm thinking about getting the m9. I stretched a SGS2 all the way until Lollipop, and I've been running a hand-me-down moto g 2014 for a few a months. I normally use AOSP ROMs.
I'm looking for something with good performance in everyday tasks (no gaming or anything). I'm tired of all the lag.
It's been surprisingly hard to find a phone that will take an SD card without being a giant phablet. My top two considerations were Moto X Pure (too big) and a SGS5 (specs a little outdated). But I've been unsure.
I've never had an HTC product. Can anyone give me a reason not to go for m9? Any other suggestions? Everybody talks about Nexus...if only it took SD.
get the htc 10. it's still expensive if you don''t buy used, but doesn't matter since it's really one of the best phones outta there

I looked at an HTC 10 at the t-mobile store today. Wow! When I'm looking for a phone in a couple of years, it'll be at the top of my list! But right now it's too expensive for me. But it definitely outshines the others in 2016. I love the return of the capacitative buttons.
Going purely on specs (and price range), the M9 is my best option right now. I'll probably buy one this week.

LG G6 or HTC 10

Can't decide between the two.
Love HTC for Viper Rom and rooting
G6 seems like a great phone but no root for the dual sim version.
Both around £320
DJ. I'm in the same position so can def help you. I bought the G6 over the HTC simply because the G6 looked good and I thought the thing would eventually get unlocked and we'd have all kinds of custom rooms, etc but nothing just lots of crickets. The phone looks good but without root and roms it gets boring very fast.
I'm in the process of getting the HTC plus cash for the G6 . The HTC has great support and endless roms, trust me go for the HTC.
Let us know what you do !!
Cheers, LL
Also the screen size may be an issue, the HTC screen is bit small but looks mind-blowing.
Sorry but why get the HTC 10? The u11 will be getting viper. Getting the 10 makes no sense.
Besides cost [emoji6]

The 10 is just much better than the U11 for some of us. Audio jack with amazing sound, full metal body, and manageable smaller size.
And no need to squeeze it

So long as as money isnt' a problem there is only one logical choice, otherwise why not just get an M9? Or an M8?
The increment in speed alone is reason enough to get it, plus the new feature set if thats your thing, form factor is subjective so each to their own, but on raw specs and what it can give there is only one clear winner.
Nothing wrong with the HTC 10 it's a great phone, i'm selling mine shortly myself though, 1+5

I do not agree. The 10 is a much superior device than the M8 and M9, or HTC Hero :silly:
The U11 doesn't bring anything worth ditching the 10 in my opinion, it's even a downgrade in some aspects. But to each his own, as you say...

Phone size is a big factor for some people, camera performance too. But if customization is all you want then you already know the answer.

Lol no not if you already own a 10 no, that wouldn't imho be worth the leap, however the OP hasn't got a 10 has he?
Not sure if your first sentence is legit or not so i'll answer it anyway then put a silly face on just incase it wasn't.
I'm not saying that the 10 is in anyway the same or on par with the 8 9 or the awesome hero
But why say the 10 is better than the 11 for some of us? When given the choice it clearly is not, not in anyway, besides size perhaps ? Nothing else. :silly::silly::silly::silly::silly:

Actually the real question is why would you suggest a phone that wasn't even under consideration by the OP? We don't know why those are the only phones that are to be chosen between, and to suggest something that is almost double the price mentioned, that it "makes no sense" to not go with the 11, makes, well, no sense really.

It makes sense to me. Buying a last gen phone does not. LG G6 perhaps but development will be lacklustre, I suggested it because it DOES make sense and it is what I would do, either that or the one plus five which I've just bought about two hours ago.
Do what you will op you have my two cents.
Now I must be gone because the mediocrity of this thread and it's responses hath caused me to obtain Forrest Whittaker eye and I fear it may be permanent should I remain.. eth.
Good luck to you on your last gen quest, I hope it is fruitful....eth [emoji106]
Leaves room.

I would get the One Plus 5 if I were in your position. Love the 10 won't get rid of it until it breaks or I get bored of it.

I got my HTC 10 2months ago. LG G6 was the other phone I was considering. Eventually I picked the HTC, because I wanted a compact device with capacitive buttons and fingerprint scanner on the front. So it's mainly due to the usability concerns. Also the $200 price gap between the HTC and LG (DS version with DAC which I was considering) mattered.
I don't think that the speed difference would be noticeable in the daily use. The HTC's camera is on pair. LG has double back lens, but HTC has rear OIS which is nice.
I am happy with my choose. The only thing that is making me wonder is that it's getting a little to hot a little too fast (can get to 37* C during nornal use, just by browsing the web with Opera). My old Samsung Note 3 wasn't getting as hot. Other than that I have no complains.

Not a fan of the all glass body on the U11, and I expect the constant polling of the side sensors will affect battery drain. Also, If the sensors get out of whack they could be triggered by simply putting the phone in your pocket i.e. too sensitive. The HTC 10 is a well made phone. Build quality is excellent. Keeping my 10 as a backup phone, and getting a US unlocked, dual sim, 1+5.

Two phone numbers on the same phone is pretty cool.
I have a HTC-10 which I purchased second hand for a family member, it has been rooted and I installed LineageOS on it, apart from that I haven't used it all that much but compared to my Nexus 6P my initial thoughts are
Pros:
HTC-10 feels a little faster
Memory card slot
Cons:
Too small (personal preference I guess but I welcome the extra screen real-estate)
Not all stock features are supported in custom ROMs (for example slow motion video)
the speakers aren't as loud as the 6P,
The home button seems to have a slight delay between pressing and registering
The fingerprint sensor is in a terrible spot
I was looking at a LG G6 but the lack of community support means it's not an option for me.
I couldn't recommend either of them really... I'd find it hard pressed to recommend any phone at the moment (I am particular)

Have the 1+5 in my hand, got it today, don't know what all the bad reviews are about, it's a beast.
Selling my HTC 10 now Cheap I want rid of it.
U11 feels too plastic for me compared to the 10, my 10 on Leedroid is very fast, never had an issue, great sound, good camera etc. Going to look at LG V30 when it comes out, 10 will take some beating. I've dropped it 4 times and still looks awesome
I wouldn't buy the u11.
It's too big for me. and that is a big factor. Sure, I'd get used to it, but I want to use the device with 1 hand. The 10 I can still do this, the u11, I wouldn't. Also, a lot of wasted space that I hate. Samsung is winning in that perspective.
I don't like the plastic nor the missing headphone jack, either. I want these things, like the IR blaster, I miss that.
If I was to break my htc 10 tmw, and I do have enough $$ to get the u11 outright, I'd still buy a used 10 off swappa.
Also.. Verizon.. Doesn't have full support, is my understanding, which for that $$, I want.. and need.
my worthless .2 cents, lol
