Principle
TOF (Time of Flight) transmitter emits continuous special light pulse to the target object and receives the return light pulse as below diagram shows. By measuring the flight time, it calculates the distance between the camera and target object, an image with depth information is finally obtained.
Usage
a. Camera focus based on the environment when shooting with rear camera.
b. Enable more accurate background blurring for shadow DOF
c. Outline the body shape and optimize it
d. Identify human movement for motion sensing games
Effective Distance
As far as 5 meters, and may vary as per the backgrounds. And 2.5 meters for motion sensing games specially.

As the phone is still quite new and fresh, I expect more functions to follow in software updates. Right now the only uses are what you listed, and a 3D panorama image. I'm sure more is to follow. I don't agree with the Xiaomi people claiming it to be a gimmick, I'm sure more companies will come with models exactly with the same function.
As for the calorie counting, there are tons of websites and apps that make money off calorie counters and calculating how many calories you've consumed every day. People actually pay a lot of money for these. So, I also strongly disagree with XDA editors and others with calling it useless and something you won't be using after "honey moon" period with the phone is over. The calorie counting option is probably one of the biggest selling points.

Self portrait camera

Hi guys.
Just curious: what is the state of WP7 self portrait camera? I believe my developer's Samsung Taylor have one. Not 100% sure but it looks like a small camera, not just a light detector.
Tried to use it via Microsoft.Phone.Media.Extended:
videoCamera = new VideoCamera(CameraSource.SelfPortraitCamera);
videoCamera.Initialized += new EventHandler(videoCamera_Initialized);
cameraVisualizer.SetSource(videoCamera);
but getting exception:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException was unhandled
Message=There are no more files.
ErrorCode=-2147024878
StackTrace:
at Microsoft.Phone.Camera.<>c__DisplayClass1.<SetVideoSessionHandle>b__0()
Seems like lack of driver support (I think exception trying to tell us about lack of handles, not a files).
Anybody have any info?
this thread should be in the windows phone development section, not general.
as for front facing camera support, no final phones have it. there was rumour that the taylor did have it (which is what you could be noticing) but my guess is that interop exception means that the drivers haven't been written in, and therefore the API hasn't either. so what you're trying isn't really worth it.
from what i've read, the API for "video" isn't operational yet, only still images.

Agree with you about lack of driver/API support but that stuff (on the left) really looks like camera (sorry, macro from not too good):

yep, that would be a camera. but as i said, because all the final devices (taylor is a developer phone) don't have cameras, you can assume the APIs don't work at present (at the API level or the driver level). But aye, keep what you had in mind (perhaps sudo code it in the app in comments), and then when it does become available it will only take you a few hours or dev and testing, and done.

Nice,
when it's ready ?
Did anybody care to read the article or is at least capable of understanding the meaning of "concept"? These are just pictures. The designer is currently looking for developers for this concept.
I don't like it - I think it doesn't fit into WP7.
I was at a conference at Microsoft's HQ where they talked about Windows 8 and Metro.
They took an old fashioned RSS reader and slowly 'converted' it to Metro, as they explain every step. From what I understand, In WP7:
You display on the main area only whats needed - otherwise there's the [...] area for settings and configurations (called the App Bar).
Element design is kept to a minimum - jagged edges are too much, also, the borders around the icons are too much.
The circular elements don't fit well into a squared environment.
It's really nice designed. Shame I can't help, need to learn new technologies I am at .net aspx jquery ajax
This will depend on the OEM pretty much and what the Radio version / Firmware allow the camera to do.
for me its to much on the screen, if the first picture should represent it in use??? the screws are to much and to big. i know it should be like on an DSLR but its to much, it has nothing with metro to do.
I see RETRO here
BTW I could buy as appears in the Market

[Q] Focusing Issues?

So, is anyone else having focusing issues when you get nice and close?
I've moved over from a Nexus S, which could get reasonably close to objects when taking photos and still manage to focus on them... but I'm finding the auto-focus on the One X simply refuses to latch onto the things I point it at.
Is it just me, a software issue, or can the camera on this thing not get that close?
A couple examples below. Red = where I touched, green = where it focused.
The remains of my SIM to micro-sim conversion.

My colleague's horrible banana (simultaneously less and more gross than you're expecting, but sfw)
Ugh, I'm not allowed to post outside links. Hopefully those images worked.
Edit: Score, they worked!
I have the same problem with mine. I can't get the camera to focus on close objects, even when setting it on macro mode.
I hope it's only a software bug that can be fixed.
JP.
Macro mode?
Hmm. Maybe I should look for that.
Yeah, I'm hoping it's something that gets sorted out in 1.28... whenever that comes out. Soon, please.
Me as well... Tried it today with no luck... It refuses to focus when I get really close... Tried turning on Macro "close up" mode and it still didn't focus...
I also just gave it a shot, no good. I'm going to be really sad if this is not a software issue
I've seen a ton of macro close-ups on the web shot with the x, look in the best pictures thread...there a bunch of nice macros...I agree though, the field of focus is rather small and inconsistent in some...others look fine. hopefully it does get worked out for all.
it should be due to the limitation of the F/2.0 lens

Are you saying the limitations with close-up shots is because of the F/2.0 lens?

NEVO smart notification watch and activity tracker

I usually write detailed reviews about products I have tested and verified, instead of those I read about or seen in crowdfunding campaigns. As a matter of fact, I'm very skeptical about such campaigns because 2014 has been a big disappointment with a number of projects I have been looking forward to (some with smart devices promised back in 2013). It's a first time I'm bring something like this up, and in no way am I associated or involved with this particular project. Just after reading all the discussions on XDA about MI fitness tracker and some other basic bracelet type fitness trackers, when I saw this particular watch - I was so impressed that I wanted to share with you about it.

The project is NEVO watch with a smart functionality and activity tracker: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/nevo-the-first-minimalist-connected-watch
What's really cool about it - it looks like a regular high quality fashion watch with a minimalistic approach of a led dial which tracks your progress toward the daily goal set within an app. It also provides notifications in a form of a vibration whenever you get a call or email/txt, etc. But the coolest part, the watch mechanism runs off a regular battery which should last at least 5 years, while smart functionality of the watch is powered off another battery which should last you at least 6 months. Both batteries are common type and easy to replace.
I see so many people with these ugly plastic wrist bands that have only one functionality of an activity tracker. Now, you can have a classy looking watch with activity tracker already built in. And from what I understand, this is not a vaporware but a product which has been already designed and tested, at least prototype of it, including software as well. Either way, I'm not preaching or saying it's a must have product, but rather would like to share with you about it since I personally find it to be fascinating!

If You Love Reading, You'll Want to Know About Eye Comfort Mode

Reading lovers stand out wherever they go. Their refined conversation style and graceful presence are a combination of natural simplicity and their subtle nature. They are a wonderful sight that you just can't miss. E-books give reading lovers like you greater choice and let you read wherever you go.
However, I am concerned that even though your Nova has an eye comfort mode, you don't know about it, and harmful blue light radiation has been damaging your precious eyes for a long time.
I'm worried about how you stay pretty while being immersed in books, so I have a suggestion for you today: when you read or browse for a long time you should turn on your phone's eye comfort mode. It not only reduces blue light radiation, but also prevents eye fatigue. Let me teach you how to set it up.
Touch Settings > Display > Eye comfort and turn on Eye comfort.

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
After you turn on eye comfort mode, your phone will adjust the brightness of the backlight and the color temperature automatically and filter the screen's blue light to protect your eyes. It is normal for the display to appear slightly yellow when eye comfort mode is turned on.
Slide the status bar down to open the notification panel, and touch Eye protection to turn eye comfort mode on and off more easily.
Gentle reminder: To improve your visual experience, it is not recommended that you turn on Eye protection when you take photos, watch videos, and browse through pictures.
