Low light - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Real Life Review

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S10+'s camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Low light performance is average I would say, on par or slightly better than previous years Galaxy devices, but far behind the Google Pixel line. Thankfully, the deficiency seems to be all software, not hardware related. Install the gcam port as described on the forum, and suddenly night pictures are brighter and mush more detailed.

Can you give a link to a working version? None of the ones I tried even started...thanks

S10+ Exynos here. Stock camera app is ok, but Gcam port Night Sight works wonders: https://imgur.com/a/53TD7nu

Where did you find gcam for exynos version?

Redmi 5 plus capture better night shots with g cam..

Andrei Frumusanu from Anandtech (one of those very few reviewers who does "in-depth" in reviewing) says after the May update, what S10+ delivers at night is on par with Pixel's night sight. https://www.anandtech.com/show/14511/samsung-galaxy-s10-may-firmware-update-improved-night-mode

Worth checking it out :
https://news.samsung.com/global/seoul-after-sunset-the-galaxy-s10-plus-night-mode-in-pictures

Cannot tell that Night Mode is any better than before I had it with last update with phone on Photo. Can anyone else see a difference???

Well, that's how photography in low light works. The shutter speed is increased sometimes up to 1/8 s, which roughly translates to 8 fps. That ain't smooth.
the rear camera's quite well, but I hate the fix focus on the front camera.
way tooooooooooo much sharpening in Auto mode......I got the Samsung sensor.
Got a stunning shot of the stars with a 10s exposure. All I can say about this camera is wow.
I think the camera in low light (almost without light) works pretty well.
you can look at this, I was amazed ...
postimg.org/image/refmvvrwr/
It's good but it doesn't touch the LG G4/G5 in low-light, especially since max exposure is 10 seconds on this compared to 30 on the LG devices.
Very good in photos, good in videos but only at 30fps (that's normal, physics applies :3)
The only feature I'd love to get is to use for example 4 pixels for each pixel when recording at 1080p, like that, each pixel is 4 times bigger and gets 4 times more light. It also could be useful in photos but the quality loss will be noticeable (but not in videos)
Very good.

The low-light capture capabilities are very nice! I've compared with an iphone x, and it blows it out of the water in dark sceneries. Not bad for an old phone ...

I would not say it blew it out of the water buts it's a shame to see apple using what I believe to be the s7 camera sensor in the new iPhone XS
With the latest Google hdr cam with the right settings it does wonderfully

I prefer the gcam port, but I'll sometimes use the Samsung camera for the long exposure. Here are 2 photos I took with the s7 (edited in photoshop).
Looking good

Outdoor visibility (max brightness)

Rate this thread to express how well you can see the Samsung Galaxy S7's display outdoors. In case you've been playing Minecraft for 18 months straight, you might not known how to get outside anymore. Well, find the door and walk through it. A higher rating indicates that it has very high maximum brightness and thus fantastic outdoor visibility in direct sunlight.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I'm impressed with daylight visibility. 75% brightness is plenty.
My older Samsung Galaxy S5 is much brighter.

Just Excellent, even in full sunlight the screen remains legible. Very impressive compared to other phones I've used.
Any of you with a Note 5 been able to confirm the suggestion by some on YouTube that say the Note 5 is brighter than the S7/Edge?

I tend to find the auto-brightness is too bright in many situations, including outside under the noonday sun.

This is actually a perk that made me reconsider this over the HTC 10. The brightness outside is phenomenal on this device.
Despite the low-ish brightness output I'm pleasantly surprised with this
Superb here in sunny Los Angeles. My secondary is a Note3 with Phronesis Note7 MM port, and the "Outdoor Mode" in the Display settings is just ridiculous bright. I do notice the absence of this feature in stock S7 firmware. Fantastic nonetheless!!!
dreaded pink line down side of screen now becoming annoying

When I'm outdoor in extreme sunlight the phone's brightness goes all the way up and then it enters a mode where colours seems washed out. But only if the light is very strong. Does your S7 behave the same?

In manual mode by lowering the shutter (SS) the Xperia XA2 takes beautiful pictures in dark environments.
However, the HDR mode must be deactivated

DXOmark... come on. We all are serious here. DXOmark clowns have no idea about photography quality.
Miniature tripod does the job well. I always carry one with me in my backpack daily (it very lightweight, so I don't even feel it).
But then, if you want to take beautiful night picture :
- mount the phone on tripod,
- set to manual,
- turn off HDR,
- set exposure to 1 sec (longest time)
... and prepare for a shock. It clearly shows how big sh*t Sony Superior Auto is in low light.
If you use a thrird camera app with a slow shutter speed and lowering the iso, you get good results

Pink supermoon, S20+, 30x, handheld.
Night shots are...adequate. No better than my Note 10, and nowhere near as good as Pixel or iPhone 11. Don't buy this phone expecting phenomenal low light capability. Daytime shots are excellent, though.
Nighttime shots have been superb for me. One of the best out there in dynamic range and exposure although it could be better with colour accuracy.

Lol this phone has produced some of the best low light pictures from professional reviewers of any phone on the market. At worst it's about even with comparable phones. Anyone saying the camera is "way behind" others is just bad at taking pictures.

i totally agree with you
This night mode is a complete joke. I am coming from Hauwei P30 Pro and Pixel before that and Samsung before that. I take many star photos/night photos. Since I got the S20 Ultra I had to take manual photos at night because it does SUCH an awful job on auto/night mode. I got a year old GoPro 8 today and decided to compare them and it's really sad for a phone as expensive as the S20 Ultra
S20 Ultra Wide - https://photos.app.goo.gl/cLT7xBR9hHW83Z4s9
S20 Main Lens - https://photos.app.goo.gl/AHxWz9GiXSPSFpPR9
GoPro 8 - https://photos.app.goo.gl/agbbm6AtdYoHSQC5A
I tried to put them in the same position. The only difference is about 20 seconds to swap out the phones.

GCAM with aux lens working [No Root]

Today i found a thread here on xda claiming that a developer named Wichaya has a gcam port in which all the lens work completely fine.
I went ahead and downloaded the latest version and loaded the respective config file. Everything works perfectly in the port. I'll share the link for everyone to try and test it.

Installed on my OP7T and everything seems to work correctly. But does anyone know which "AWB in HDR+ Enchanced" setting is best? It gives me 3 options (Pixel 3, Pixel 2, & IMX586).
I don't really notice a difference between the 3 options.

Our phone doesn't have any dedicated macro lens, instead it uses ultra wide lens for taking macro photos when using OnePlus camera app I think,, though I'm not 100% sure about it. 7T has 48MP wide (main rear cam), 12MP 2x telephoto and 16MP ultra wide. That's why a specific 'macro' button isn't there in the Gcam screen on 7T, like it shown on that XDA thread which I think that phone has a dedicated macro lens.

I clicked 3 photos in 3 different AWB settings and i can say that Pixel 2 AWB has the warmest color rendition whileas Pixel 3 AWB has somewhat lowered down warmth. The IMX586 AWB has the closest to real life color rendition. You can test it in greenery and blue skies, where the difference is clearly visible
Can someone help me understand the 3 buttons that's appear on the botton left hand side after loading the XML configs. I am interested in the first two actually. One with the SUN icon and the second with the finger pointing.

This makes sense, considering that's what sensor the 7T uses.
I could be wrong. I honestly do rarely claim to know what I'm talking about
However, seeing that it's apparently still being used in newer models of OnePlus as well as numerous other manufacturers and models (262 in total, counting the 7T) according to this kimovil.com page, I wouldn't be surprised if before too long we start to see improved versions of the algorithms used in this camera on other (arguably better) models find their ways to the 7T.
Edit:
Check out GSMArena's camera compare tool between the 7T, the Asus ROG Phone 2 and the Nubia Magic 3. All three use the same sensor. Since the sensor's the same, it begs the question: Is the hardware between the sensor and the OS any different, or is the improvement of photo entirely in firmware?
I wouldn't mind having photos like that ROG 2 come out of my 7T! Look at any fine detail area, but I like comparing the "Series 2013" on the five-dollar bill of the "good light" sample. I gotta say though... I didn't look at the "low light" sample before, but our 7T (stock) does better in low light than the other two I chose for comparison. Maybe there's something to be said for it -- especially considering night-time photography is a thing I want to play with...

Yes, there is a lot of difference in the algorithms of every smartphone vendor. Despite all of them having the same hardware, the details, color, white balance etc. all come out to be different. Like everybody wants to have GCam because of the Image Signal Processing it provides, which is way better than any other manufacturer.
Any idea how to enable 10 bit recording in bt 2020?
It works but slow motion recording crashes the app. It also takes time to switch between the cameras. Any solutions for these issues?
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is what I have been waiting for since getting this phone. Wow what a difference this makes. My only question is how can I adjust the sharpness of the front selfie camera? Like all Gcam apps the selfie camera is way too strong and the sharpness needs to be toned down but I cant find any of the settings to do this.
Any possibility of getting full resolution with Gcam mod, it is giving only 12MP in rear camera
I've been using this mod for quite a while but couldn't figure out a way to get the DNG (RAW files) working well with any editing apps ??*
Using newest Wichaya 3.1.1 and it is fantastic. Very accurate pictures, (too accurate, if you have an ugly face like moi. The night shot is slightly slower than stock, but works well. Also, the macro actually zooms closer than stock by a good margin! Use the wide angle lens and just zoom in!
Do the aux lenses work with the new Android 11 beta?
