Should I get android P, should go for custom ROM or OxygenOS? - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I wanted to ask some questions...
1. Should I go for android P? What are the main features that would make me switch to it?
2. Should I go for LineageOS or OxygenOS? Again, what are the differences? Which one is better for battery? How strict is OOS for Xposed?
3. I saw some not-official Xposed's, are they working?

What do you mean how 'strict' is OOS for Xposed?
I haven't really needed to use Xposed for awhile. It was just so I could use YT with no ads/background playback. Now I use YT vanced. A lot of other features previously only available with Xposed are now either built-in or available as a Magisk module.
Also I'm not even sure if Xposed framework has been released for Pie...
As far as which rom to use, if you get replies here theyll be mostly split. Some swear OOS is better, some like the extra features you can get from AOSP or other custom ROMs.
Ive been using AOSP Derpfest for awhile now. It's fast, stable, decent battery and has enough extras built-in. Haven't used Lineage since it was CynanogenMod so I can't comment on that.

Forcus on stable, you should use OOS Pie
If you need extra feature, I such guest use AOSP. I personal is DU fan alongtime.
But you can try Code Name Phoenix or Omni Treskmod

OOS pie if you want a daily driver. While there are a number of decent custom roms out for pie (several of which are generally considered superior to LOS), they all have their own quirks and issues. Either way, if xposed is a must, you can use magisk to install edxposed, an unofficial pie port of xposed which remains controversial.

Use like oos or aosip. Both very stable.

Stock Oreo.
OOS Pie 9.0.4 introduces a lot more lag and scrolling jitter than OOS Oreo.
If you don't mind that, use Pie.
Can't comment on custom ROMs, but you're risking stability, camera performance and reliability if you use custom ROMs.

I can second omni treskmod it is totally smooth unlike stock pie rom and the battery is good too.

No lag here, Pie runs perfect.

I can say MSM xtended and Blissrom are very very stable. Everything works. Battery is very good and performance is top. Of course OOS should be even stabler but I personally prefer some custom rom features.

Android 9 & Custom ROMs

Hi,
I don't want to get into a debate about which custom ROM is the best. (The one you pick is likely the best for you right?) What I do want to get a handle on is people's experience with custom ROMs and Android Pie.
Is there a custom ROM that has done a better job at integrating the features of Pie after moving on from Oreo, and that currently is at an acceptable useful level?
There are a few out there currently, and they seem to have been working for a bit, but is it worth it to flash a daily driver to a Pie based ROM at this stage, or wait for awhile?
Thanks for your help,
Clay

Pie roms are mostly very stable now, pixel experience and havoc, both of which I tried worked perfectly for me, no problem. You should just try it

Yah There are so many roms out there but i will suggest you to go With Pixel Experience
i have switched many roms from last 2 months But whenever i switch I have never get the smoothness that i get from PE
Latest version of PE (https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/development/rom-pixel-experience-t3830197) has almost no more bugs and it uses Android 9: PixelExperience_whyred-9.0-20181119-0216-OFFICIAL.zip
It's updated to recent security patches and works great.
Definitely usable for daily uses!
I'm using AOSP Extended Pie. So far, so good. It hasn't blown up my daily driver yet, so <fingers crossed>.

Yes it's working very smooth, I didn't notice any glitches
I'm using LineageOS 15.1 as daily driver. Yesterday I tried AOSPExtended Rom 6.0 and Havoc-OS. In my opinion AOSPExtended runs great but I didn't find an privacy manager like LineageOS. As second I tested Havoc-OS. Havoc-OS has implemented privacy manager. But In the Pixel Launcher in Havoc-OS I didn't find a option to deactivate the Google search bar.
But both ROMs looks very great.
OT: For my personal use, I don't want GoogleServices and PixelLauncher. F-Droid and Yalp store is enough for me. For my tests with Havoc-OS, of course, I replaced the Pixel Launcher with another Launcher from F-Droid.
Revolution OS Pie is very smooth and stable and has an awesome battery life
MCaosp best custom ROM Android Pie so far I have tested. Well-balanced. 120k on antutu and lots of drums.

What is the most stable GSI for this phone?

I'm not a huge fan of MIUI, so I would like to try some GSIs. Is there a GSI that's stable for daily use and with no bugs?
I've found that by now most of them are if you add the two manual vendor fixes required for Bluetooth and brightness.
The one downside though is that you lose VoLTE access and that MTP is broken if you're coming from a Oreo-based MIUI build.
Phh-treble AOSP is a base for almost all available gsi roms. Since PHH is the leanest purest AOSP of all, my guass would be that any derivative adds some bugs. BTW, phh 108 has December security patch, that matters in some cases (see a list of known critical issues disovered and fixed recently)
Pixel dust or havoc are better than phh

So pixel dust, this rom dont have a ton of features...... both have less than miui. But these romes are not stable, i had problems with some apps on every gsi.... I dont recommend them. Better stay on miui and wait for normal custom rom for our max 3.

Just so far I'd say :silly:! When you start getting random pesky ads, your first action would be to search for a custom ROM! (BTW, I'm on a Redmi 7, and am waiting for custom ROMs)!
This is one is very good (AOSiP)

I am considering buying the phone. However, MIUI is out of question.
Does the rom that you mentioned have bugs on Mi Max 3?

Simple current ROM

What would be the best ROM to use that is as close to stock as possible but running android 7.1 or 8.1 etc.
I don't want or need any mods or custom features, just simple stable with maybe root.

The best, most current is LineageOS and here is yesterday's 20181208 build available. LOS provides a native root solution which you activate in the developer options. If you are concerned with privacy and battery drain, then either do not install the Gapps spyware at all, or install LineageOS for microG with great FOSS alternatives.
Please read more on the microG and on The NO GAPPS Initiative websites.
:good:
Currently using Lineage 14.1 microg (7.1.2). Not having google services really make the tablet excel in battery life. Currently getting 9+hours sot with youtube watching/reddit/twitter

Any OREO non-OxygenOS-based ROM supporting Oneplus Camera?

Hi, does anyone know if there is any OREO 8.1 ROM that would support / could run OxygenOS stock camera?
The ROM should also fulfill these requirements:
non-OxygenOS based
still maintained, that is no EOL/Discontinued and so on
I have used Resurrection Remix [6.2.1][UNOFFICIAL] by @8224Freak which had this functionality. However, the ROM was lately discontinued, and I was contemplating changing the ROM anyway since there were some Bluetooth issues in last updates.
As far as I know, I cannot just download OxygenOS Camera app from APKMirror, install it to any custom ROM and expect it work.
I would prefer OREO-based ROM since I prefer stability over fancy new features, and since there is no official Pie ROM yet, I guess the Pie ROMs are not as stable as OREO.
Thanks a lot for your tips.
Just a tip, as I don't really know of any rom as per your wish,
Give a try to havoc OS which is pie based. Quit stable and smooth except few display glitches & sensitive long press .
This ROM provides link to download OP camera, which I have never used. I am happy with GCAM
OK, thanks for the tip. It seems that your suggestion is in accord what I have found until now. I could not find any other ROM except for the Havoc OS you have mentioned. I am also satisfied with GCAM except for 60fps videos - the videos often do not have 60fps (sometimes they drop just to 21-22fps). It seems that best and the most stable results I always had with original OxygenOS camera - the videos made by this camera were always very smooth - no stuttering or dropping frames whatsover.

looking for a good non-google custom rom.

hi everyone,
I have recently bought a mi max 3. Miui is far from my favourite however, and i am looking for a good non-google custom rom. There are so many choices for roms that i find it difficult to decide, and trying every single one seems a tedious task that is hardly worthwile. I have a week to decide, as xiaomi made me wait to unlock the bootloader. Obvious sidenote: I intend to root the device as well.
The custom rom i am looking for should support the following features (in order of importance)
- works without Gapps
- strong encryption (password different from lockscreen)
- decent battery performance (longer lasting battery has preference)
- fast and smooth (the more lightweight the better)
- gesture support (should be standard anyway (the screen is huge, i can't be bothered to reach for the navbar )
- due to rollback protection, it needs to be at least android pie/ android 10(?) - is it worth waiting for android 10 custom rom releases?
I know many of these requirements can be met by using apps as well, but if it is included or easier with the custom rom it certainly has my preference.
I am currently looking at:
- lineage OS (has been my driver for the past years)
- AEX
- Syberia OS
- evolution X
- havoc OS
- resurrection remix
additions are more than welcome
note: i assume TWRP recovery and Magisk for root are still decent options. if not, please let me know

Don't worry about Anti Rollback because it's only for miui first.
Arb lvl need to be the same to rollback on miui but never go to an older one. But since a while on miui we're still on lvl 5.. but on custom ROM it's useless.
For root as always.
Unlock bootloader
Flash orange fox (only recovery supporting encryption)
Flash magisk
Reboot
And if I were you I'll try crdroid or aosip. On my side I'm the actual maintainer of aosio derpfest and stay on it since months. RR is a bit heavy and Cerberus is very clean if you want less. For those I build or builded... For the others Evolution x and havoc are very featured. And aex is lighter than oreo version if you already tried it in past.
You got others ROMs for that consider to join my channel @Nitrogencloud on telegram. Gismobe post more there than xda.
For nogapps just don't flash any gapps. Most of the ROM are provided without any

Thanks for the reply.
I got an error trying to check arb on my device, but if it does not matter for custom roms that's peachy af.
Q1: I remember encrypting my previous phone which had TWRP on it, that seemed to work fine. Did not know about orange fox previously, will look into that. How is Orange fox different from regular TWRP (specifically with encryption)?
Q2: In terms of built-in app permission control, how do cerberus, AEX, crdroid and aosip compare?
Q3: and (last question, promise) with regards to updates, I noticed aosip derpfest does not support ota updates, and crdroid seems to support ota. my previous experience with dirty flashing updates, is best summarized as: "chugging down coffee at midnight trying to unbrick my phone". Not looking forward to that -again, so i prefer the possibility of OTA updates. what would you recommend?
Thanks for your quick reply, appreciate it.
