Android Q double-tap-to-wake ambient display gone? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I upgraded to Android Q DP1 yesterday through OTA and noticed the double-tap-to-check-phone feature now always displays the full lockscreen including wallpaper. Same thing for lift-to-check-phone. In Pie, it used to show ambient display first when double tapped. I have the Always On Display disabled. Is this a bug?

Yes, the "Double-tap to check phone" and "Lift to check phone" options are still there, and when enabled those actions still wake the screen, but the wake behaviour has changed, which is what I'm wondering about. When woken, it now shows the full lock screen rather than the ambient display (black background and dark theme) that used to show up in Pie.

Ohhh...ok I know what you mean now. Personally, I like it the way it is now in Q.

It's down to personal preference for sure. I wish they would've made that wake behaviour configurable if it's not a bug.

I wish the same too even in full 10 release they didn't change this behaviour
It's better to wake the ambient display than to wale the whole phone in case you need to check nots.
:good:

Hey all!
I am glad too see somebody else also noticed it. I absolutely adore the clean design and funcionality of Pixel's AOD, but the changed funcionality of double-tap to wake (from waking AOD to waking the whole screen) annoys me. I even rolled back from Q beta to Pie hoping they would not implement this change in stable release. Now in order to see AOD you need to have it on constantly, which actually drains some 1% battery per hour (that actually makes it some 15-20 over a working day's period and is actually quite substantial.), also during the night. I also don't stare at the phone all the time to need AOD all that time - a gentle tap to peek the time, weather and notifications is just enough - I see some of you would agree.
Is there any way we can appeal to Google similar to OnePlus's feedback section?

Hey, has it also become iOS like?
I hate whole iOS lock screen turning on. What a shame

I spent time factory resetting my phone thinking that the missing ambient display settings were a bug, I never thought Google would remove that functionality. The language under the "Lock Screen Settings" sounds similar, but they don't do the same thing since now it just wakes the entire screen. Real bummer that Google keeps removing features.

Yeah, it seem they went almost full iOS on this And it was so good: tap twice - AOD shows, tap twice again on that AOD - the lock screen shows. Why Google, why! At least give us an option to schedule when the AOD can be turned off automatically (like at some hours at night).
And to think I bought the Pixel just a week ago to finally taste the stock Android. It is good, no doubt here (and the phone size and general style is very refreshing from thos behemoths I used from Sammy, OP or Huawei), but OnePlus seems much more thoughtful and practicality-oriented. And what is the more important the pledges from the OnePlus community actually work quite often which I don't expect with Google somehow.

I'm fine with it. Not a big deal.

[REQ] N9 lockscreen mod

Hey guys!
I recently sent my Nexus in for repairs, and borrowed a Nokia N9 from a friend to use meanwhile. Now I've got my Nexus back, and there's one thing in particular that I miss about the N9 - the clock and notifications on the locked screen.
If you haven't used or seen an N9 in action, this feature is really, really useful - and something I think could be ported to (at least) the GNex.. See attached images
When the user locks the screen, usually on other phones it just goes plain black. On the N9 however (because of the AMOLED screen) the screen is mainly black but with the clock still visible! It also shows small icons to alert the user of new messages and such. To avoid burn ins, the N9 changes the position of the clock and notification icons randomly. It also uses the proximity sensor to "know" when it's in a pocket, and then turns of the screen completely.
So devs, can this be done?

wouldn't this create burn in on the screen? Are you serious that the n9 screen never turns off fully?

Well, to be honest it probably would create burn ins if the screen were on 24/7.. But Nokia has (seemingly) thought about this! (And I have failed to mention it in the 1st post )

This is what I'm looking for! It works pretty good, although it cannot turn of the software buttons in ICS.. But an update to the app could fix that

Well, using the stock clock on ICS, you can set the phone into a very dim low power mode (as you mentioned). I am pretty sure the clock periodically moves around the screen to avoid burning too. It also hides the softkeys. You just need to tap the screen when it's displaying the clock overlay and it'll dim down.
I doubt it'd be viable for carrying around in your pocket due to the fact that your phone is obviously not locked in this state and it hides the notification bar so you don't have any visual feedback for notifications (besides LED flashing?). :/

Yes, the ICS standard alarm clock offers similar functionality.
As I wrote a few posts up, the N9 always displays the clock and notifications when not in a pocket (or when the proximity sensor is not blocked). But, if you take the phone and put it in your pocket it will completely turn off the screen - it would be a waste of battery to do otherwise.
Regarding the notification bar, the N9 also has icons on the lockscreen as any Android has in the notification bar - it's only showing a small SMS bubble under the clock if you have a unread text etc. etc. You wouldn't loose any functionality with a mod like this, only gain moar
Look at the attached pic in the first post to see what I mean

Yeah I get you, I'd also like this mod, I am quite often finding myself turning the phone on to get the time/see notifications so something like this would be schweet.
Would be an awesome mod. Gonna follow this thread n see where it goes

Thinking this needs to be seen again I'd love this so much, and I'll help out if I can.
NoLED is a nice software. It must be updated to hide the soft buttons as I can see now
My only concern is the battery consumption because the Android OS is not going to deep sleep mode if the screen is on which means the phone is always awake
Any ideas
This mod would be sweet. I had an old Nokia n95 and like that the clock was always displayed with the screen off.

Any ideas on how to accomplish it? Being able to double tap the screen to unlock is really a luxury I would miss

that's a feature of noled and the most efficient way to unlock the phone. especially if you have noled show a clock at all times as well as with notifications. did cut my battery life by about 15-20% but with some tweaking of settings i got it down to only 7-10% which was acceptable for the added ease of use.

2 XL Always on display clock position issue

Hello guys!
I think found an issue on my 'Always on display'.
Normally the position of the clock is close to the central middle, but this morning i found my time has been moved to the up for a distance, so i notice this clock just doesn't look right
i don't know what I've done and i didn't find any setting option.
Did you activate screen saver?
It move the clock around

Thanks for your reply!
My screen saver is active and it has a default option 'while docked'.
Should i turn off them?
it has nothing to do with the screensaver. the movement is normal and prevents burn-in. i'm surprised nobody has said this already.

There is a separate clock with the screen saver that moves it all over the screen.
The normal clock on the ambient display is always in the same spot, just has pixels alternate on and off to lower the chance of burn in.

The screensaver clock hops to a random place every minute. The always-on display clock, as far as I remember, moves one pixel at a time, bouncing around the screen (?).

LiveDisplay or Color Calibration

Cyanogenmod has a feature called LiveDisplay which automatically adjusts LCD color temperature according to time of day. Has anyone gotten this to work on the builds provided by Transi1? I'm in love with this old tablet after installing crdroid and am interested in figuring out how to get live display or color calibration working. I get some flickering and temporary display corruption when i try to adjust color calibration in the same display menu as LiveDisplay.
It Iooks like support may have been added in a pacman ROM a few years back, I wonder if that change was ever incorporated into Transi1's builds

In my experience, do not use this feature on the Kindle 8.9. If I would make a guess, I'd say the tablet doesn't support this feature and on any of the 4 or 5 ROMs I have tried, will either severely pixilate the screen, or throw the tablet into reboot. I was having a lot of trouble figuring out what was causing the issues until I turned the options off. I only figured it out because after the event happened, usually on first boot of the newly installed ROM, a notice would appear in status bar asking if I want to configure LiveDisplay. This option could very well damage the device if enabled.

I have done some experimenting with this feature. The 8.9 doesn't have the ability to adapt the display. So turn that off. Set the live display mode to 'night only'. Surprisingly this works pretty well.

Lift to wake up gesture. Not working right!!

#Android10
When i lift my pixel 3xl, the Ambient display just lasts for less than a second and the lock screen shows up.
Anyone with the same issue.
Please help.
It's the new changes they made on Android 10, probably for pixel 4 with face unlock features.

Yes its there ****ty ne implementation and i hate it, ambient display only works when set to always on, the other settings like double tap to wake and tilt to wake just shows the lock screen, and notifications show up minus the wallpaper unless you tilt or tap, this is googles idea of new features, mess with the old ones and call it a new feature, remove stock android features because they are better than ours.

Question 12 "Stable" Issues Thread

Besides the general low quality of this piece of software, here are some specific pains:
1. SafetyNet test fails (no root) - WTF? Can't use any of my work applications because of that.
2. Status bar notification icons don't appear (except for Gmail, for some reason)
3. About device shows there's an update available but I can't update because I'm not the "owner" of the device (there is only 1 user configured, no multiple users) - screenshot attached.
Please share your experience and whether or not you're seeing the same issues (or more).
Thanks!
Another botched update from oneplus scams
Well, it's a good thing I decided that the OP9P would be my last OP smartphone. I'm gona stick with Pixel phone from now on. Finally release A12 and no phone or data works. Really OP???
- Phone stuck in 60hz like 99% of the time.
- Keyboard doesn't have this convenient padding anymore. (On botttom to make typing easier.)
- [Launcher] Can't search apps with a single up swipe anymore, will have to find some hacky solution again. Usually I put a KISS launcher shortcut on other phones. But why ruin it when they had it ....
- [Launcher] Folders open on the middle of screen. Makes no sensse.
- [Launcher] The whole launcher experience is just way worse.
- Battery Management is a mess, now there are other options per app. The previous settings were reset.
- Rooting with Canary Magsik can soft brick. Managed to fix it but it took me a while and I consider myself a veteran.
Honestly, tons of great features are missing. I wish they would just give us a lean AOSP instead like the ASUS Android and call it a day. This feels like a botched, budget Android on a cheap Chinese phone.
App drawers can only display 4 icons per row. Anyone knows how to change it to 5 per row or more?
it is no longer possible to film and in 21:9... or I am blind.

That's not actually a bug, that's feature. Go to notification settings for particular app and you can set to show notification icon on status bar. Disabled by default for all apss (I think it should be enabled by default), except Gmail, Dialer and a few others.
Bug I found:
- font size issues. I want to set small fonts and dpi. But some apps, like default camera app, power menu, google feeds when swipe etc has still default large font, experience is terrible
- custom dpi set in developer settings will be reverted after reboot. If you set smaller dpi in phone settings, it will be applied a few seconds after boot, phone starts with default dpi
- AOD does not work, even if enabled, screen will turn off when inactive
I installed via built in ota from Oxygen 11 Global, I got update to ColorOS 12
Just got my first 1+ yesterday and was really impressed with the OOS 11 experience.
All day long. All the magic has gone after the update.
In addition to what was already said, the AOD is flickering terribly.
Perhaps it is caused by the pwm of low frequency.
Lol, I paid 1000 euros for this phone because the software was supposed to be good...
Oh yeah, the CLOCK. What is WRONG with that CLOCK!? LMAO.
I mean look at this ABOMINATION.
WHO DRAWS A CLOCK LIKE THAT? SATAN?!?!??!
Like wtf lol.
I have a new problem. I listen to music while walking with my wireless headphones. The phone is in my pocket. Unknown reason causes the phone to crash.
I feel it's going to be complicated.... At least I have 5G working.
Why would they remove the seconds on the clock feature. This update is horrible all around

I'm not even going to upgrade A12, I deleted the 4gig update I got from Oxygen Updater. Oneplus just shoot them self in the foot and will not recover from this. I'll be suprise if they sell 1k Oneplus 10 phone next month.

They didn't. This is only when setting an alarm in the clock app.
Camera goes bananas when zoomed beyond 10x.. See attached
Any custom DPI set in developer options is completely lost after reboot.
Reported by me multiple times and was also seen in previous phones/Android versions.

Did you select "High" refresh rate in settings? Mine is at 120hz the vast majority of the time.
I have issues with screen brightness not adjusting to low-light conditions. When setting my phone on my dash mount I have to manually adjust the screen brightness down or go blind, even in dark mode. Worked fine with Oxygen OS 11. Fairly disappointed with the overall quality of this update, and I usually love getting the shiny new OS version update.
