Display PWM frequency? - Samsung Galaxy A50 Questions & Answers

So im thinking if i should pick up A50 as my new phone but i'm worried about possible eyestrain because of AMOLED, are there any tests which show how good\bad the A50 screen flickering is?

[Q] Screen Flicker?

Hello all... Is it just me or does anyone else notice a slight screen flicker when not looking directly at the screen? I notice it most when outside, and it is not perceptible when looking directly at the screen... but when I look away my peripheral vision picks it up. Almost like a PWM. Am I alone?

I sometimes see it as well, out of my peripheral vision. It is most obvious when the screen is dim, like when in a darker room with auto turned on. I remember reading some threads about PWM over on the Samsung Galaxy thread that said that this might happen.
Note 2, Note 3, and probably many other AMOLED phones including Note 4 use PWM to dim the display. There should be no PWM at full brightness though.
I think you can use the app Screen Filter for dimming and put the display at full brightness and you shouldn't have PWM that way.

Couple of questions regarding this solution.
1. How accurate are the colors when using this utility? Is it just a filter that is applied to the screen, or does it actually darken the pixels?
2. Does having the brightness set to full impact the battery life when using this app? I mean as PWM is meant to save battery, it must have some impact. Just wondering how much.
I think I remember seeing that even at 100% brightness, there is still some PWM, though not nearly as much as when the brightness is lower.
Thanks.

I noticed it today, I thought it was a problem until I read the comments, yes exactly when I look away or just look at home button I notice screen "flashing" only on cull brightness and light colors, I wanted to bring to service Centre, so is this a problem or not ?

Ghosting problem?

I don't know if it's roms (I'm on OOS4.1.1)related but, is anyone experiancing ghosting problems with oneplus 3? Btw it only happens with black colors. They just blur when I scroll.

This is normal for all amoled panels that exist, that ghosting happens when the pixels need to turn on after they were completely off (when the screen displays black). This tends to happen most at low brightness when a pixel is going from the off state to a dark color like grey or dark blue. Happens with my Galaxy S3, S4, S5, S6 and S7 and my OP3. Other phones with amoled panels do the exact same thing and OLED TVs do it too. It's perfectly normal

Thanks for the information. Have we overcome this problem in s8. I mean after 5 generations of display panels, Samsung ought to have fixed it.

Its just the way how amoled currently works. I would say don't look at it and enjoy your phone!

A50 screen issue: red and green is too vibrant and looks fake

Hey guys I noticed that the A50 screen has this weird thing with its red and green colour , it is too bright and saturated which makes objects with these colours look fake, I have tried changing the display settings but it doesn't help that much. Also , the white colour on this screen has this yellow tinge to it, I have been comparing this screen phone to cheaper lcd panels and found that the colours on the LCD panels are more accurate , I also compared it to other phones with oled screens and got the same results . Do you guys have this issue or is it just a hardware issue with my phone
Welcome to the world of amoled adaptive display.
So are you saying this is normal for Samsung amoled screens? Because I don't see the issue in other brands of oled
You can change screen mode to basic in setting menu

Just go and check in the Samsung store if the other a50 are the same. No one will be able to help you if you don't send a picture of the display or anything.

I also had very vibrant colors but now I am using basic profile and all is good.
Users on average prefer the "fake" HDR feeling of the colors(over saturation). that's why samsung keeps that as the default mode

But if I change to the other 3 colour profiles other than adaptive display , the screen will have an even more noticeable yellowish tint

S20( /+/Ultra) OLED - bad uniformity, too bright dark grays, green tint

Hi,
over in the ultra section, there is a thread about bad OLED uniformity and a green tint, which is really badly visible in dark environments e.g. in the dark grays used in many applications:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20-ultra/help/green-tint-dark-background-low-t4065621
The attached picture of my display was made by zooming into the (uniform) 5% gray picture in a dark room with 25% brightness using an S10+. It is rather horrible and badly visible in normal usage.
Is anybody here expierencing the same issue? Please feel free to head over there, also, if it is not an Ultra.
Thanks and best regards,
Corwin
I have this problem too. I'm on my second S20+ now and it has problems too. I'll return both. It sucks.
That is really unfortunate. Thinking about trying another S20+ - but I think we should probably wait for later batches. I am also hoping for software optimizations, as it is better at 60Hz - but usually, nothing can be done about it.
How do you test for this ?
Sent from my SM-G986U using Tapatalk
For me, I did not need to test for it, as I noticed it right away the first time using it in a dark environment.
In this post is a 5% gray picture which can be used and instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=82017239&postcount=17
I also had a bad uneven grey on my 512GB Ultra. Swapped for the S20+ and it's basically perfect. Good luck on the OLED lottery.
Mine does not have this problem. Is related to where the phone is marked for distribution? I'm on a US/Verizon handset.
Mine is also a US version. On ATT. Its just an OLED panel thing. Samsung used to have this issue a lot back in the S6 through S8. From S9 and Note 7 and on screens were great. I think with the new 120HZ screens the uniformity issues came back.

I think so too. S8 was really bad. S9 and S10 were great. S20 is bad again.

Exactly. Gotta be the 120hz thing.
If anyone has a really bad grey screenor not uniform. Return and reorder. Samsung customer care won't understand the issue so might as well just order a new one and hope you get a better one like I did.

Too bad my second one is still bad. Now I return both and order a Snapdragon model.
Oof. Good luck. Mines Snapdragon. Oh and Snapdragon is the better variant now anyway.

should I be worried if my whole screen is green when showing this 5% picture in dark room? upper part of the screen seems to be slightly brighter green - it is my first samsung and I cannot find anywhere how ''good'' oled 5% should look like...
My opinion: Of you need the picture to see it and do not notice it or if it does not bug you, you are fine. If the display is uniform, whatever it is like, I think it is ok.

It's one of those things where once you see it, you cannot unsee it.

Absolutely!
I have the same issue, S20+ 5G Exynos
So how do you test this again? Using a dark grey picture with the brightness set to 5%?
ETA: NM, I read that wrong. I downloaded the image and tried it at 25% brightness. I'm not seeing the same thing? Is it meant to be dramatic to be able to notice if it's a bad panel? I'm seeing a normal display?
On number 5 I can say that it is finally bearable. It was manufactured on the second of march. I did not check with the rest. I only opened them, handled them delicately and checked them. All were terrible.

screen yellow tint on left side and blue shadow following scroll

At low brightness states between 5% and 15% , I notice
a yellow tint on the lift side of the phone, especially on grey background, but It's better seen in a dark room, like when I'm scrolling at night.
can you guys tell if it's a software or hardware problem.
I can't ignore that odd uniformity in colours.
There is also a blue shadow following my scroll down in the same conditions of lightinig and brightness.
Here's a link showing the problem
Here are some pics, I wish they are clear enough
that's called smear. it happens on all good amoled screen. it's even exist on 90Hz display ex: op7t. but it hard to notice it because of 90Hz refresh rate.

It doesn't sound comforting when you say "good amoled screen" It means the technology is basically crap
Does it exist on Galaxy S20?

i have j7 pro, a71 and op7t.
j7 pro has less contrast than a71 and op7t. and j7 pro doesn't have noticeable smear as a71 and op7t does.
this is a refference where i get those information https://amp.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS9/comments/9brauw/black_smear_test/
as stated in link above, every pixel in amoled is on and off. when you're using black theme and low brightness and trying to scroll.as fast as possible. the led at certain location need to be turn and off as soon as possible. it makes smear noticable.
