Buying Samsung Galaxy S9+ instead of Xiaomi Mi 9? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

Hello!
In few days I would like to buy a new phone. Right now, in my country, there are massive price drops of SGS9+/ Note 9 prices. So SGS9+ costs 536€ and Note 9 699€.
As You might know, Mi 9 costs about 466€ (6/128 variant). The thing is, that Mi 9 is almost unpossible to get from official distribution. There are only few pieces avalaible for sale every week.
In my opinion Mi 9 only advantages are newest Snapdragon 855, and better look (personal opinion), and under display fingerprint scanner. Camera without OIS is a little bit worrying.
My biggest concerns about SGS9+/Note 9, is Exynos which in benchmarks is slightly slower than Snap 845. But on the other hand I think that camera would be better, and despite being released over year ago (SGS9+), it still can show off with the new technologies.
If Samsung, then question is SGS9+ or Note 9? Note 9 has larger battery, stylus (sounds like a good idea, but in practice can't say how often I would use it) and a little bit telephoto camera. Would You say that it is worth to pay more?
I would like to hear your opinions regarding Samsung devices, and maybe even some of You has comparision to Mi 9
I will be grateful for any recommendations.
Thanks!

Go for the phone with the newer snapdragon
[emoji3436]I Willl Scarfice For Those That I Love [emoji3434]

It depends on your usage, if you want a phone with stereo speakers, headphone jack and SD card slot, with higher screen resolution and higher front facing video resolution, and if you care about a more secure iris/face unlock and more reliable physical fingerprint scanner, go for the S9+/Note 9 (depends if you need an S pen). Otherwise go for the Xiaomi Mi 9. Personally, I prefer Samsung's software though. But since you can pay 699€, I recommend you to pay a few more and get the S10e, or wait for the S10 price to drop, it will be much better than the Mi 9...

I'd prefer Samsung, they have a better track record, especially on the security and spyware department.

Since you don't have access to the Galaxy so plus with the snapdragon variant that equals to worst camera and battery (I mean on snapdragon you are gonna be able to use the GCam mods with great alogirthm for Better photos, you can use the wide lens camera, better portait pictures etc! And the battery in my experience of the s9 (not the s9+ is just fine I am able t get 2:30hrs of sot time per charge in full HD )

Which MI to get?

Hey everyone, I'm debating upgrading to xiaomi from my note 4. I could need some help deciding.
I don't really care which snapdragon it is. Both the 820 and 821 are a massive upgrade from my note and that's doing everything fine.
I'd like something smaller, but have no problem with 5,7" if there are benefits to it.
I'd like the opportunity for some kind of stockish rom. I don't flash daily anymore and am very familiar with miui since the original htc desire days. So miui is fine, but having the opportunity to go for lineage or aosp if i feel that way would be great.
So basically:
mi5s, mi5 or mi5s plus?
The mi5 64GB comes in at 277€
The mi5s 64GB is 307€
The mi5s Plus 64GB is 357€
Edit: I might also throw the Note 2 into the discussion. It's 200€ more expensive, but the bigger battery and the epic looks really are attractive.
My open questions: there is basically no development for the mi5s atm. Is there something to be expected? Is the mi5 still competitive or is it slowly eol? And for all options: Is the Ram upgrade to 4/6GB worth the price tag or is 3/4GB fine for you?
Any input to help me decide is greatly appreciated:good:
Mi5 has better camera for video (thanks to OIS) than Mi5s, otherwise they are very similar. Mi5 is longer out and thus has more chances for a custom rom. It does look like there will be some CM support (or whatever it is now called) for the Mi5s, there is one build here in the forum.
No idea about the 5s Plus.
Memory management is hard to say, but Android loves to have ram, so in general it's better to have more than less. Then again, this really depends on the ROM too.

If the screen doesn't bother you, I would buy the mi5.
: Better camera
Cm support
Deeper development here in XDA
PS: I have the mi5s plus 6gb 128 and I'm stuck in MIUI that I don't like very much. I going to continue to use my axon 7 until he has cm support

Mi5 doesn't have better camera than mi5s!
The mi5 has OIS but apart of that nothing else is better. The MI5s camera makes much better photos.
In fact it's so fast that I almost never have to make a photo twice, I very rarely get a blurry picture.
I would get mi5s 64GB. The materials are much better.
CM is still WIP but when Xiaomi releases the kernel sources it will be a much better phone.
With the recent Stable Global rom it goes like butter, didn't notice any problems.
By the way, the MI5 is 257$, the 64GB mi5s is 288$ and the 128GB is 348$

I'm with @dabyd64.
Mi5s has better construction than Mi5 (Aluminum vs Ceramic).
Mi5s is a little heavier (around 15g) and around 1mm bigger at 3 axis (difficult to tell a diference side by side).
Mi5s and Google Pixel have the same camera sensor, one of best as today.
Mi5s take better photos and regarding video Mi5s have EIS (at 1080) that is working better than Mi5 with OIS.
It could be better if Xiaomi invest on image processing algoritm like google did on pixel mobile.
Right now, Mi5 has better comunity support because was released first, more users, and kernel sources already released by Xiaomi.
I doubt Mi5s will have better support than Mi5, but i'm pretty sure we get the major roms.
Mi5 has infrared and could work as a remote control, this is the unique feature loss on Mi5s.
For me, Mi5s all the way. I would avoid Mi5s plus, if you really want a proper dual camera implementation -> Huawei P9.
We have to understand that a dual camera solution is all about image processing. For me, Xiaomi implementation was a failure.
If you need 5.5" screen size i would go for oneplus 3t.
Mi Note 2 has an oled 5.7" curved screen with te same 1080 resolution, so lower pixel density.
I really hate curved screens, and it's a pain to protect those devices.
It has a bigger battery, but generally bigger screen more consume, on the other hand oled consume less than lcd, you have to analyse sot.
200€ more relatively to 300€ it's significative, i would say put 200€ aside for a new one later on.
Not OP, but I would like to say thanks to @BPSoft and the other people who answered this question, as I'm in the same boat right now. Want to upgrade from my Mi4, and considering Mi5 and Mi5s. But the price is too close.
Do you think it is worth waiting for Mi5s price to drop a little bit more before buying? I am not very keen on using it with MIUI8 (jury's out for future MIUI 9), so I would be waiting for a custom ROM (CM, AOSP, ...). What do you think?
Custom, somewhat stable, ROM could be a way off for the Mi 5s, as the kernel source hasn't been released yet. At least there is a global rom now for the Mi 5s, but I'm not sure if that can be bought preinstalled. Not a big thing, but maybe waiting one more week (until CES is over) might mean a tiny bit lower prices.
Mi5s is at its lowest price ever, though (about 265€ for me). So many decisions... but I think i'll go for it.
Even if not preinstalled you can always unlock bootloader and install the global ROM, corect?
This is correct. Actually, if you run the official China build, you can simply download the Recovery Rom to the phone, open the Updater app, select the rom and it will flash it. No unlock needed. Works also with some, but not all, "shop roms" (globalized non official builds).
I want to thank everyone who gave their opinions. It's much appreciated.
So, if its xiaomi, mi5s it's going to be.
Currently the axon 7 is an option too. But, i'm debating squeezing some life out of the note 4 and waiting for those sd835 phones to hit the market. Might be mid year, that those come. And sure enough xiaomi will have a new mi with this SoC. Then, either it's cheap enough or the mi5s will get even cheaper... decisions, decisions.

For a 5.5" screen size, i prefer Oneplus 3T, huge support here at XDA, 6GB Ram, SD821 instead of SD820, 64/128GB internal space, but without sd card support.
See here for a comparison:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8416&idPhone2=8067&idPhone3=7260
Regarding photo quality:

As you can see 20Mpx says nothing about picture quality :cyclops:

I'm more optimistic, i expect "Mi6" release at March, like it was with Mi5. SD835 is expected. If i could, i would wait!

So it depends if you want OIS or faster capture. For my opinion cm development to mi5s Will take some time, soon we will have the mi6, so that's always the same thing , when we have some development there's another upgraded device that came out. We'll stay stock whit MIUI .

What I really liked is the screen / size ratio, I think it's one of the 'smaller' phones which still has really good specs, decent screen and of course dual sim.

Confused between Mi 5 & Mi5s

Dear All,
I need to buy a new phone & getting confused between Mi 5 & Mi 5s
Please suggest which one is better over all.
Mi 5 3/32 or Mi 5s 3/64 GB
Price difference is only 30$
Thank in Advance
Mi5s is a upgraded version from the Mi5 with a better build quality, bit faster processor and a better camera. So in my opinion it is really worth those 30 dollar with current custom ROMs making great use of these plus points.

...And with really sh*tty fingerprint reader. You get better fingerprint reader on xiaomi redmi 3s.
With my phone it's working perfectly (always has btw), and so is with anyone using the latest firmware as far as I know.

MI5s ultrasonic fingerprint reader was advertised as very accurate and fast and you could unlock phone with wet or dirty fingerprint, but in real life that's not true. From the beginning speed and accuracy wasn't so great and few months ago my fingerprint reader just stopped working.
Google is full of links like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/5glh5l/xiaomi_mi_5s_fingerprint_sensor_the_worst_i_have/
I regret i didn't buy xiaomi mi5 or oneplus 3.
Which were firmware problems. Those were fixed recently.
/EDIT: To be fair I think for most people the Xiaomi A1 is a better choice. Excellent build quality, Android One, much better battery life, more network bands and a nice low price of 180 euro's at the moment. Unless you game a lot, you probably won't feel the difference in speed all that much.
Example (other shops have roughly same prices):

Or if you want better battery life you can go with Xiaomi redmi note 4 or Xiaomi redmi 5 plus, but they don't have band support like A1 and stock Android. If you don't game too much, everything with Snapdragon 625 or similar would be good enough for everyday usage and battery friendly. Also you can consider buying Huawei honor 9 lite or Huawei honor 7x.
Buy MI5s for its camera. FP is okay don't worry not as fast as others but if that is your main point I have to laugh.
Well, the build quality of Mi 5 is a bit worse.
I strongly recommend to buy Mi 5s instead of Mi 5. It's the improved version of Mi 5 with full-metal body, faster SoC, better camera sensor(same as the Pixel).
I'm using Mi 5s and I think fp is ok.
Better buy neither of them, they are both ****y phones, buy something from oneplus or mi 6/mix 2.

Oh, it's so helpful to writing this without telling any reason.
Battery in this phone is joke, fingerprint scanner works 1/10 of the time, ram management does not exist.
Again, just update the firmware...
It won't help, trust me
Fingerprint working near perfect on my Mi 5s with latest Global stable ROM. I really like my Mi 5s 128GB, only battery time could be a bit better, but that's the CPUs fault mostly.
Also have a look at the Mi 6 which offers optical image stabilizer, which the Mi 5 also has, but the 5s sadly lacks.
I have previously owned both 5s and 5s plus. 5s has good build quality and camera but bad fingerprint reader and mediocre battery life. The larger sibling, 5s Plus is much better IMO. More vibrant screen, slightly faster performance, much better fingerprint reader and battery life. The image sensor on 5s plus is worse but still takes good images if you install the ported google camera mod. I would also consider Mi Note 3 or Mi Mix 2.

Did you have the Mi5S long enough to install the firmware version of the first of March? That one has given the big change. Before that, the FP sensor was indeed not very good.

No, I sold mine in february this year. I am suprised that they finally fixed the FP-reader (one and half year after the release).
I think everyone is
Battery life and FP reader are solved in Miui Pro BETA by Belorus team. Non beta roms all have bad battery life anyway. I do talk here with gaming and without. Now i freely use it all day

Mi5S camera? i need help for choice.

Hi there, i have now Oneplus 5 and Mi Note 3, but i want smaller phone with good camera..
Mi Note 3 had good points in dxomark? but will this mi5s camera will be also good? that bsg google cam hdr port was targetted this phone on the start..
so what you think? i mean i want like 5" phone with good camera, and also lineageos support.. what you recommend then? thanks.
mi5 and mi5s wont be so expensive.. and watch that mi6 and mi5s dont have big different with image quality?
The camera with a modded GCam is great indeed on this phone., much more than you would think by the price. The only real downside to the phone is the battery life as it is average, while most Xiaomi devices really outdo the competition. Otherwise, a great phone. Do make sure to buy it in a sale though, as it can come as low as 230 euro's (price I paid over a year ago).

Buy Redmi note 5 pro or wait for Xiaomi A2

Should I buy Redmi note 5 pro or wait for A2 to show up at 8aug. My priorities are Custom/ 3rd party development, Battery and Camera. I honestly Don't care about the missing headphone jack(have wireless headphones)
I would've straight away go for A2 but 3000mah battery is kind of a deal breaker. How much difference does 1000mah make on SOT (assuming both phones are equally loaded with apps )
is the camera worth enough to sacrifice the battery compared to redmi note 5 pro? Need your input.
TIA
Well, to SoT, it depends which hardware will the A2 have, but I would say 1-2 hours? Maybe? Like with the mi6x.
3rd party dev? Well, it depends how many devs will get this phone, nobody knows. I think it will be propably the same, maybe a bit higher, cuz non MIUI out of the box.
Camera? You can compare that only when the phone is out and somebody do samples.
Is the camera worth to battery? That is only thing you have to decide by yourself. Honestly I have RN5 pro 4gb and I am more than happy with gcam. Those photos are better than on my colegues iphone 7. "PUN" I know, it depends on taste, but even he agried lol. The Apple Man. (He has apple watch, mac etc.) -- just to clarify that RN5 cam is really good.

Question F3 - Worth it?

I read about some problems like:
- Proximity sensor
- Some ads in the rom
and some other bugs and that is disappointed after all...
Xiaomi MIUI software is not good about all? I think they not going to fix the proximity sensor.
Or that is better buying some OnePlus device?
Xiaomi.EUI is better than Global and debloated?
proximity sensor is definitely an issue when you're in a call the screen does not lock properly, anything software related can be fixed only time will tell if it's a good device, for me i always buy phones around $400 so this one was my go to choice

oneplus 9R is $100 more, as i said software don't count, i never use stock roms anyway, i only lock boot loader when i'm selling or giving the phone away other wise it's the build quality that counts, i had oneplus 8t for a few months and i was disappointed because i thought buying a more expensive phone would make a difference and 9r is the same i skipt all previous generations of poco and i still think f3 is worth every penny

if you're buying a phone and want clean software out of the box, Pixel phones are ur best bet for a budget, they are the closest manufacturer to apple when if comes to reliability, all other brands have buggy software at best, oxygen os might look like stock aosp but it's very poorly designed.

Depends, if you plan to play heavy game (genshin impact for example), it's a perfect "budget" phone. But if playing isn't your primary goal, there are better globally phone.
Proximity sesnsor has been fixed to a degree (I don't notice a problem on my unit at all), of course there will be more firmware updates to iron out the rest of the minor kinks.
I don't game or use the camera too much, it was between this phone and the Redmi Note 10 Pro (I didn't want an olrder device from Xiaomi simply because one more year worth of updates is well worth the trade off).
For me, the price difference would have been minor if I got the 8/128GB version of the Redmi Note 10 Pro instead of the 8/256GB Poco F3.
So I went with the better looking, better built, better performing, better features (120Hz AMOLED, Dolby and X-Axis Haptics) and IMHO the better value phone (Xiaomi.EU China rom versus Xiaomi.EU Global rom on the Redmi Note 10 Pro).

Well, redmi note 10 pro has 120hz amoled and Dolby. The camera is better, if he isn't planning to game at all, I would go for the redmi note 10 pro, the built quality is better, the camera is superior, but the chipset is too weak to really play.

He needs to decide what's important to him, performance or camera or spend more for both.

How much I need to spend more for the both things?
Not take pictures a lot but yeah play games.
I read that the proximity sensor is hardware problem.
Maybe OnePlus 9R for better software and without bugs?
I don't get all the fuzz about the proximity sensor. It's "weird" in that it combines accelerometer and camera, but it does work, unless you make phone calls while lying down on the bed. I've had no issues with it whatsoever.
OnePlus 9R is a great alternative, the main camera support OIS and it has the same chipset as the Poco F3.
And yes with more optimized and arguably better software, it's pretty affordable too.
Perhaps if you wait a bit more after the summer, we might see a Mi 11T and Galaxy S21 FE.

So maybe 9R worth it? yeah that is 100$ more but you got better software..
But if you got the 9R.. you can added 100$ more and got the regular Oneplus 9... so..
Write down your reason to buy new phone.
Write your need in priority order, we are not you, we don't know your situation. Worth or not is subjective.
Camera, SoC, local price of phone, warranty, system update, community, reason to buy phone, where you live, budget limit ... etc.
Remember, no compare no despair. Get use to phone you buy.
Suggest you buy all, Poco F3 + OnePlus 9R + OnePlus 9. Worth? Yes worth, 2 for me and you keep one. Worth for me.

You have the option of stopping some adds, uncheck all kinds of miui optimization, referrence, suggestion, feedback, also some option ull find in developer mode. I have done it in mu Poco F1, didnt find a single add in 2years of use. I havent bought the F3 yet but hopefully its the same principle. You can remove bloatware via xiaomi fastboot tool. U dont need to unlock the bootloader.
It seems mostly that you're searching reasons to not get the Poco F3 instead of asking if is worth or not
In your case, get a OnePlus 9R/9 or a Pixel phone and you will be fine, their software is easily a ton better that Xiaomi MIUI and they shouldn't have the issues you mentioned either (Proximity sensor and ads)
I agree, he's nitpicking at the flaws of phone instead of thinking of what he needs in a phone and comparing it with the competition.
There's no perfect phone out there regardless of money and just for record, "I don't like Apple products".
