Confused: Can Camera2 API be enabled on stock Pie? - Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Questions & Answers

I've read a lot about Camera2 API not being enabled/functional on custom Pie ROMs. Can it be enabled on stock Pie for A2 Lite? I'm currently on stock Oreo 8.1, and have held off upgrading due to lack of Xposed and GCam (I've gotten used to Night Sight for pics). Although I don't use Night Sight frequently, I like the ability and want to be able to keep using it on PIe if I upgrade. It also appears that Gravity Box is released for EdXposed, so that should fulfill my modding needs. Just want to be sure about Camera2 API before I take the leap.
Thanks!

Cam2API can indeed be enabled on Pie. But Gcams don't work. They keep trying to focus and you end up with blurry images most of the time. If you like Gcam, stay on Oreo, that's why I downgraded.

@marstonpear & @Zodui,
Based on what you say I may not upgrade. However, if the itch strikes, which version of Gcam would you recommend?

I know the "itch", but believe me you're gonna come back to Oreo again just for Gcam and you're gonna have some minor problems due to downgrading. Still if you insist, this one is optimized for our device so it has front cam working, back cam keeps focusing on Pie:
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-hass31/
And this one for the (blurry because of focus, lol)NightSight shots:
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/GCam_6.1.021_N7P_test2.5.apk

@marstonpear
OK. You've convinced me to stay on Oreo!

UPDATE : You can use Urnyx05's gcam ports on Pie and the back camera focus is working properly, but you can't use front cam with HDR+. So you can install a Gcam 5 for the front camera and for the back you can use Urnyx's gcam. Cheers.

Gcam Miui vs AOSP

Hi, my Redmi Note 5 is arriving and I want to know if I install Ressurrection Remix OS the Gcam app will have the same image quality as if I install it on Miui?
In my opinion it's even better, since you can adjust a lot in the modified versions of the gcam (look out of Arnova and saneklic.)
You can bump up the image quality by quite a bit (also in low light conditions, images can get better). Additionally you have some nice mods (like photosphere, different modis of panorama) which the others don't have. In my opinion the mi camera performs as good or worse than the gcam.
The portrait effect with the blured background can be achieved perfectly by 1 lens again, so no need to use the mi camera for that effect (since lineage snap & gcam use 1 lense only). So there is no need to use miui camera for that one.
Don't forget to activate camera2api (persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1) in the build.prop and you are good2go I hope it helped!
Edit: if you want to use the miui camera anyway, there is a thread where you can flash the .zip file and have it anyway!
I think he means that he would like to know if the gcam performs the same on Miui as on aosp Rom. In the end, is the gcam so good on Miui as the same gcam app on aosp?
Personally I think yes, because they both used camera2api, but I didn't test it.

I tried it on pie...
1. Focus is very bad working.
2. Back camera takes monochrom. photos.
Gcams updated in the first post.
I have been testing some ports, and now, with Android PIE the best for me is:
Gcam-6.1-minimal-test.apk (Tolyan009, 2019-01-29, android 9+, changelog)
In advance options (or similar, i have the mobile in spanish) u should disable portrait zoom, and active enchanced HDR. I use the "normal" GCam mode in large range photos, and it´s focused, when the camera cant focus i use the portrait mode (wihout de artificial zoom) and the tap focus is working aceptably. Night mode "works", not as it should, sometimes it´s in focus, sometimes not. I think i probed about the last 15 or 20 ports of GCam and been trying to change BSG configurations but i don´t find a better results than this "minimal" port.
Hope it be helpfully.

You havent right. The first post contains focus working gcams...
well, have been testing most modded gcams here : https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/
and unfortunately the reality is,
- focus is broken since our device got PIE. on oreo, it was perfect, photo shoot&forget... all sharp photos, no blurriness
(any betatesters reading here? maybe xiaomi will have a reason to ignore this issue because first root is needed to enable camera2api before but this focus issue becomes really irritating as 3 OTA's arrived after PIE)
- other methods mentioned here are all temporary: switching to portrait mode and then photo mode , or changing resolution to 16:9...
cameras updated in the first post.
did you use all this? (when enabling camera2 api, on mi a2 forums, they said they had problems in night mode, when not using all this setprops)
setprop persist.camera.HAL3.enabled 1
setprop persist.vendor.camera.HAL3.enabled 1
setprop persist.camera.stats.test 5
setprop persist.vendor.camera.stats.test 5
gcam pixel3mode for a2 pie rom
with this camera, everything is working except, portrait with hdr.
even slow motion, that is 1st time its working on gcam 6.+
and flashlight is not striking to soon. (on normal photo mode)

I've tried. But i can't compare.
People on A2 forums, told, you cant use G Camera 6.1+, properly if u don't use use all these strings ,
when you enable camera2api.
I did all that, but i cant compare.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2/how-to/camera2api-mi-a2-using-temporary-root-t3869543/page2
in this link they said its neccesary to use all that, if u wanna use gcam 6.1, after pie update,
if u use oreo its enough just 1st line.

A2lite isnt A2. Problem is NOT version of gcam. Problem is focus issue on A2lite and it seems only xiaomi developers can fix it. Maybe in one of next pie versions.

Yep focus does not work, tried at night.
With original camera it does, only gcam problem i think.
I have tested a bunch of GCam mods and found that best results come with versions optimized for Nokia 7 Plus - N7P.
Working ver. 6 GCam_6.1.021_N7P_test2.3 can be downloaded from here: https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/gcamera/GCam_6.1.021_N7P_test2.3.apk
Most of the stuff that I tested works - slefie cam with HDR does not work though.

I'm using this app, but the result photos can't be viewed via gcam app (gcam picture viewer is broken), must using external gallery.
Edit: I actually can view photos directly via gcam gallery, I changed the gcam setting on "using classic photo viewer"

We need a developer to fix HDR+ front camera on GCAM 6

Many of you who use gcam know that sadly with GCAM 6 the front camera will refuse to work with HDR+ enabled. (Which is the main feature of gcam) that also means no better front portraits and night sight feature (on selfies) compared to GCAM 5.
Now I wish I could fix this issue, but sadly I am not a developer who knows how to create a fix for this, but I did see other devs which own a different phone and fix this issue using a magisk module such as the OP5/OP5T and Mi 8 Lite. We need to find someone who can find a fix for the Redmi 5 Plus like there's a fix for other phones, and then we all could enjoy superb camera pictures!
Sadly no one has ever found a way to fix the problem yet. I wish the developer would've fix it for our device too, but seems like there's no way it could happen in the meantime. It may be related to the system files in our phone that needs to be modified, or it may be related to the gcam app itself whereas some codes need to be modified in order to make it compatible to our devices.
Whatever it is, let's hope it'll get fixed one day.
What's even worse is now alot of GCams that are v6.2 version got rid of the ability to even disable the HDR+ therefore you can't even take normal pics. Also as result of the broken front alot of modes don't work either like Portrait on front, Night sight on front, Photobooth.. sadly the front is broken. We may get fix one day hopefully.

GCam crashing with AUX camera on OP5t (ResurrectionRemix Android Q)

I'm using the GCam version from here (NGCam 7.4), along with the Nik-1.5 config, dotfix v5.7, and "GCam Enable Aux All Device" v2.1, and Gcam still crashes when taking a picture with one camera, then switching to the other (main->aux or aux->main).
I can't really find any updated GCam info (that doesn't just point to that version), so I'm wondering if anyone's got a working GCam setup?
I'm on Resurrection Remix 8.6.3 Android 10, rooted with Magisk.
EDIT: It turns out that if I wait ~8 seconds or so after taking a photo, switching to the other camera doesn't crash it. So I'm guessing trying to switch during the background saving/processing of the image is what causes an issue.

Question To those running custom ROMs, do you guys miss OOS Cam?

Post title.
I've had this phone for nearly a year at this point, and the main reason I got it was on my OP7P, all the nice custom roms I could try out. However, the difference between there and here is that custom ROMs on that phone had OOS Cam, they also had the ability to dualboot.
I've avoided being on a custom rom this entire time is because I don't want to give up OOS Cam, but what do you guys feel about the lack of it? I know GCam exists but you can't use 4K120/60 video recording with GCam as far as I know. Has there been any changes to the app to allow for that?
I think that more and more people are asking for it to be integrated in custom ROMs. The thing is that on the opposite of the OnePlus 7 OOS cam app, the OnePlus 9 Pro's is heavily tied to OPPO's ColorOS Camera. And from what I understood, ColorOS has been a pain to deal with for developers, as OPPO isn't as community orentied as OnePlus.
That's one of the things stopping me from switching to a custom ROM. When I've tried GCam on OOS, none of the ports are stable enough. I'm not a huge camera user, but if my camera could crash when I WANT to use it, that would piss me off.
I found somewhere in this forum port of OOS cam, photos and videos working, some features missing tho, lucky I don't use them
So, custom ROM can live with OOS cam

That camera is from OP7 AFAIk, and it's next to useless. photo processing is broken, and video fails at 60fps, so people may as well use Gcam since it's does a far better job than that broken port.
