Recently had the oneplus 6 and was so easy to root ..should i root this phone and if i do how do i get the latest otas installed after root?
Why would you want to root it. I always rooted my phone up to s9 plus. I think now Samsung software is polished enough that we gain no benefit by rooting the phone.

Still just the tip of the iceberg.
Don't use any of the so called secure features, payment, health, et al. Never used them and never will.

The biggest issue with the one way trip is when it comes time to sell. You can return to stock but even on a non rooted, stock device those aforementioned apps that the new owner may want won't work on a 0x1 device.

Plenty of options for ad blocking on non rooted devices now so that's not really a reason anymore.
And none of them have the convenience of AdAway. Particularly when other VPNs are required and you have first disable the vpn ad blocker. And don't get me started on AdHell. LOL

Have to disagree. there are ways to block ads on an unrooted phone. ever tried adguard? they have vpn, proxy method etc.
You're not using nay secure payments but samsung pay is becoming one of the fastest growing payment option. You really wanna void your warranty, stop receiving OTA updates all this?
If you ask me - please don't root your s10+.. it's a powerful device where you can customize it without rooting. Yes, I do agree, you will not get 2-3 root advantages like titanium and few other customizations. But think of the pros, cons. Nowadays you can use it without rooting and with a lot of customization.

If you use a third party launcher like Nova etc. I don't see the benefit in rooting that once existed. Just about all of the things mentioned can be managed without root.
Root is giving a lot of options like titanium bu/adaway/greenify/viper/freeze system apps and a LOT more.

Adguard isn't free and it slows wifi throughput. Speedtests dropped from 600-700Mbps up/down to 150-160 last time I checked. Not a fan of that.
Next, there is no warranty out of the box on Exynos. It's buy at own risk, period. So no argument there.
And OTAs. That's kind of a joke considering it's May and the (official) security update is March 01. The unlocked versions in the USA are slow to get (official) updates.
But we're talking about just root, right?
Typically, I only unlock the bootloader to install a custom rom. No matter how good the factory OS is, they just simply cannot touch a custom rooted rom. It's better out of the box now compared to touchwiz days, yes. But still not as good.
Is it worth the hassle? To some no. It really depends on what you want to do with your spare time I suppose.

Agree with all that there is minimum benefits to root nowadays. I only see using twrp to do backup as the key benefit. Anyway, this is my personal opinion. Anyone can have others.
As for ad blockers, i use "Block This". Its low battery consuming and uses VPN. Free too. But please remember to whitelist your google translate or else you cannot download offline language packages.
I tried adguard before. Its good for ad blocking but uses a bit more battery.
I haven't rooted a Samsung phone since the s8. I rooted mostly for customization and Samsung has more options than most. I use Adhell for ad blocking and between the theme app, good Lock and Nova I can make my phone sign??? Yeah. I'm good. No rooting required.

Yeah I've found absolutely no reason to root my 10+ . adguard works just fine without root. Plenty of customization options available already. Very pleased with my experience so far.
Viper and fonts are my reasons to root. Couldn't live without Viper. Audio sounds like crap without it.

Nowadays you have quite everthing (adhell and app disabler do a ggreat job). Only thing It bother me is I do not have titanium backup anymore
May I ask you why Viper is so important?
I haven't rooted since my Note 4. It turns into a black hole of fiddling with the phone for what I think is very minimal gain. Since I have less free time at this point in my life I just prefer to use my phone as it was meant to be used which is to make my life easier.

Friend, just a brief scan will tell you that the answer to your question is no. There is no bootloader unlock for the Verizon Note 4 n910v. Allegedly devs are working on something, but given that it's been out for over a year and nothing has happened yet, I would wager that we will never see it happen in our lifetime. It took me a while, but I've learned to live without rooting my Note 4.
I'm still within the 14 days to return or exchange my Note 4, but I've made the decision to keep it, even though it might never get root, and I've rooted everything I've had. Once I made the decision to buy the unlock code for FoxFi, it made the decision easier, considering all I really needed root for was the tether feature. If for some reason FoxFi stops working again, I can always use my S4 for the same purpose. Do I wish I could get rid of the ads in some of my apps, sure, but they're apps that I can always find better versions of. Plus, if I really need more room for games and such, I can use my Tab 3 that is rooted.
I personally think that the Note 4 without root, with Nova launcher Prime is an awesome phone that I will keep till it dies! My phone kicks butt, better than any of my previous phones!

Are you running on 4.4.4?
no root is very, very unpleasant. for example, i can't pull my authenticator credentials. worst, i can't secure the device. vz can pull anything on me, which means i am vulnerable to social and financial loss.
Personally, I USE ADW Launcher EX.
Root would be great for themed OS'S and getting rid bloatware.

yea i just got my note 4 about a week ago lol so i could return it. but i like the device itself. just annoyed that i cant delete some of the bloatware and **** that comes preinstalled lol oh well. guess ill keep an eye out for any one who might just find a way of rooting. thanks to all who commented. i figured by what i was reading that there is no current root =/ but oh well.
Hey, I was thinking about rooting but I can't seem to find the cons for rooting the note 7.. I know that when rooted, Knox is tripped and you can't pay with your phone + your warranty is gone, but are there any other reasons why you shouldn't root your Samsung?

As of now you can root without tripping Knox on the SD820 variant but it's not worth it. You lose so much and gain so little. The warranty will be OK but you still lose the ability to use a lot of apps, such as Samsung pay as you mentioned. The best I got out of it was fully removing apps with titanium and AdAway. Without root I use ez disabler and Adguard.
It really depends on what you'll be doing with the phone. If you're gonna wanna try out different ROMs or kernels then obviously you'll need to root. If there's certain root apps you've used befire which you think you may do again, obviously you'll need root.
Personally, I don't tend to root these days for any other reason than Xposed. Even if I don't use many, or even any modules, I root in advance so I haven't gotta do it when I want to use them. With how good phones are these days though, there's less and less reasons to root

Yeah that's true, I am mainly interested in the extra customisation of things like the lock screen and tweaks to improve the phone. Coming from iOS I always jailbroke so not having root makes me feel like I'm missing out, but I probably don't really need it.

When it comes to customising the lock screen there's a bunch of apps that could probably do what you're looking for. Have a search around XDA and the Play Store and I'm sure you'll find something you like.
About tweaks to improve the phone, it's not really something that's needed (at least from my brief usage of the Note 7 so far). I'm not in a position to tell you whether you have to root or not though so crack on if you feel like it :good:
One of the good things with Android is that you can already do more right out of the box than you can with a jailbroken iPhone

Right now I have the Moto X Pure rooted and I m the type I kinda like to have a rooted phone. Just been doing this a very long time and set in my ways.
How are you all that own this phone running unrooted. I mean I guess I could play around and use an unrooted phone but it's been a while.

Yea I use adblock (rooted) now but I really think I would miss Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, and MyBackup and they all work well with a rooted phone.
I guess I will wait to see if root comes around and when the price drops on the phone.

I was the same as you for years. I always rooted my devices and used the same apps that all required root. But now I really don't miss rooting and have accepted the fact that I can replace TB with SmartSwitch, use RE without accessing the root file system, etc.
I keep an old Nexus 7 (2013) on hand for those times I need to feed my addiction to SuperSU!

Quick question for ya. When using SmartSwitch, does it actually switch app and the data for each app so it is as if I lose nothing? That's the one main reason I use TiBu. Thanks in advance.

This is my first phone ever that is not rooted. I have been using the nexus line for so long i am loving all these extra features that actually work.
My root list has kept shrinking over the years. do i miss it... sure... do i love this new phone... OH YEAH.
What about Viper audio? Is that possible without root? I just ordered a S8+ the unlocked version and am a bit concerned not seeing much on root. I see there are bounties out there for it and a lot of work being done towards root and possible BL unlocking, but who knows when it will come available. I did the incredible trade deal, hard to pass up, trading in a old note 3. But I need tethering out of the box, want Viper audio and use TiBu all the time. This needs to get rooted ASAP! Or I may send it back or sell it.....

Before I got this damn s8+ I used the nexus 6. I used the N6 for 3 years absolutely still love that phone! I don't know man I'm thinking about the nexus 6p. The s8+ is a good phone I just need root and bootloader needs to become unlockable for me to keep it.

I too came from a rooted Moto X Pure and personally I don't mind being unrooted. Sure I miss being able to use custom roms and having adaway and titanium backup but personally it's not that bad. I really like my S8+ and I would not go back lol.

I will keep my rooted Moto X Pure just ordered a Note 4 to play with. There is no phone that great for me to use unrooted...
It sucks to not have root. Haven't had root since my Dev edition Note 4. Have had root on every phone previous since my original HTC Incredible smartphone way back when.
I do miss Titanium backup. And Ad Away. Those two things are by far the two that I miss the most. Helium worked well enough on my Note 7 and S7 Edge once I migrated to that from the banned Note & (that I held on to until the very last I could - into February). But Helium does NOT work worth a crap on the S8+. Quite a few apps would not migrate at all with any data, so I lost data on some apps. I found work arounds for most of them, but not all of them. And I use Adhell, but it's not nearly as good as Ad Away. But again, it's not a real big deal overall. Would love root but not expecting it to happen.

Just out of curiosity. I know in most cases it isn't needed anymore but I've been on phones with locked BLs for about 3 years now so I might end up unlocking mine just to tinker around a little bit. Assuming we will be able to of course.
Right now I would say no - don't see a reason to. But I don't even know if I'll get this phone for sure I love tinkering with phones though. So on second thought If I do buy it, then I'll probably end up unlocking & rooting it at some point.

True, I haven't been able to run a custom ROM in 3 or 4 years so I'm behind the times lol. Not sure if there are still any features left in ROMs that stock doesn't have. Some folks just like the feeling of being on something custom. But yeah, I can totally see people just rooting in current times for AdAway and stuff like that.
On this topic, any idea if we'll be able to root and unlock the bootloader since it'll be the new tensor chip? I'm asking because on Samsung devices I remember being able to unlock only the Exynos and not Snapdragon, and I may be asking something silly here. Thanks!

5 years of security updates, not software
This time I've said no but if there is a healthy custom scene then it will be a consideration.
The trade off will be having to see what we lose in unlocking the bootloader and rooting.

Security updates are also software updates imo.
And Google doesn't just merge the android revisions, they still push some tweaks and fixes afaik.
I will not. I retired my 3XL this spring because I got a free Note 20 Ultra. So no root on it. The only thing I was rooting for was ad blocking and with Brave the few ads I get in apps don't bother me.
With Magisk Hide gone away I don't want to lose my banking apps and such.

If the security chip somehow doesn't make it much harder, then sure I'll continue with AdAway and some free tethering. Otherwise, I've made my peace with it. Will grit my teeth and deal with these VPN ad blockers.

I am in this same boat. I feel like I had a Google phone for years.. going from the Nexus line to Pixel and then have the 1XL, 2XL, 3XL and didn't continue to buy because they started making a mid-range device... well now they're back to making a high end phone, but I switched to the S21 Ultra.. Sammy software (One UI) I am not a fan of.. I do miss the simple and clean stock android software, but samsung/vzw has done a good job of getting me the monthly updates, the camera and phone in general is phenomenal.. will be hard to leave this phone especially with no magisk hide

Yeah I've been running Sammy devices the last 3-4 years waiting on Google to put out something like the P6. I'm so ready to get back on the Pixel train.

If it can be unlocked/rooted, then I plan to buy. If not, I'll have to reconsider. I realize nowadays there's smaller need to flash, but it's kinda a hobby of mine and I like being able to tinker with my device

That is one hell of a good question. Totally forgotten about the new chip!!
The only reason why I have flashed all my pixels was ad blocking. Nowadays, do you think DNS blocking like dns.adguard.com is good enough to achieve the same result or hosts based blocking is still the king?
I'm using Firefox with ublock origin, so that takes care of the websites, so there's just apps that remain.
Of course now Google is using it's own chip and it remains to be seen if it's a good thing or bad. Some people say it's a good thing, because in theory Google can now provide longer support, since drivers have always been the main issue.
Also lately Google has been making noises about upstreaming Android kernel changes with the eventual goal of just straight up using mainline kernel and modulizing the drivers. That will open possibilities way beyond rooting, more ROM variety, etc.

Under no circumstances I will own a phone (or a computer, for the shake of it) that sends any data to servers of Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, Amazon and the likes.
Cloud is just the marketing shiite to refer to someone else's computer.
Therefore I need root to remove all the crap, to do backups against my own computers, to have a proper firewall that blocks domains and IPs of unwanted servers, and so on.
To date,
Google has always allowed bootloader unlocking on their devices so I do hold out hope that they won't be making a change of tradition there.
They have been pushing OEMs and parts suppliers like Qualcomm to keep updated support for their products and part of that is contributing to providing source (AOSP). Further, as stated above, they are looking to eventually get on mainline Linux kernel if possible and have been going down that road for several years now.
Also let's not forget that Google makes it mandatory to release kernel sources for devices. It's just that not all OEMs comply and Google has never really enforced it for anyone else.
It's just my guess, but I think they will release all the sources and allow bootloader unlock. It would be a pretty massive change in rhetoric otherwise and massively hypocritical if they stopped now.
With samsung releasing necessary bits for the development of Custom ROMs is there still dramatic downsides to flashing any of these potential roms onto a samsung device, is the dreaded Knox still an issue in this department?

I rooted an s20 Ultra a couple of years ago the following issues occurred.
I had a Galaxy watch 2 and 3 both would fail to sync with the phone
s-health would not work
Samsung pay would not work
the secure folder would not work
Samsung pass also stopped working
these apps did fail to work but relocking the bootloader brought the google play certification back
google play store became uncertified which made google pay and my banking app also stop working
OTA updates stopped to
wasn't worth it for me haven't done it since the s20 ultra.

did you try magisk hide or zygisk? if you dont mind what banking apps do you use?
I only ask because I haven't experienced any issues with the banking apps (Chase, Discover, USAA) I used on my last device, a rooted oneplus 7T Pro.

99.99% sure that KNOX eFuse will be blown with root ... and - in UK at least - your warranty is instantly & permanently void.
Yeah, AFAIK it blows the knox fuse, so anything with personal data from Samsung stops working. That includes pay, wear, health, sec folder etc. Also Google stuff becomes a pain. Probably work around for that, but honestly, doesn't give you anything, and just causes issue, so don't bother

Totally agree. Rooting a phone in 2022 is as useful as buying a house with an outside toilet. Not many want this feature in their life.
Rooting doesn't make any sense anymore. on the contrary it brings so many issues especially regarding banking and password managing applications.
I was a flashcoholic during the good old days, and rooting a phone was the first thing I did when I purchased any phone. but that was because of the software limitations and the mostly not up-to-date Android on the phones I bought. Add to that I didn't have bank apps back then.
Now Samsung has almost the best software update policy, you can buy the phone today and have OS updates for the next four years, add to that the maturity the software and the UI have reached. Tweaks are barely needed and if so, there is the Good Lock app which has many useful additions and customization.

#MeToo. I am a recovering root-a-holic from late 2000s to mid 2010s but rooting a samsung in the 2020s is more trouble than benefit for anyone who is not an active XDA custom rom dev.
i did root my fold 4 because several apps (titanium, Lucky Patcher) i use need root access.
and LP is so important because i can disable annoying ads in apps.
banking apps do run great with zygisk in magisk.

Does Pihole work for blocking Ads from apps?
Do you recommend it run on router or device or?
I've got it running in a container on my home server, but did have it on a raspberry pi for a bit. Works great and stops from everything
People who are talking that root is not as important as before. Give me an alternative to Viper4android without root. and I will get Convinced.

No idea why you need it, the sound profile is decent out of it with a little tweaking of the dsp settings and decent headphones. After all your listening for the most part over a lossy connection (Bluetooth) anyhow. But if you 'need' it, then more power too you, but a synthetic dsp is not worth the agro impo

I have been using Viper for more than 13 years not since I owned a Samsung Galaxy S4, running by Huawei phones, Oneplus. I have never seen any OEM Audio tuning that brings the same quality and crisp sound that viper brings, and tons of customizations.. I make my phones sound better with Airpods pros than iPhones themselves..
I would really like to invest in a fold 4. but If I can't get it to sound like my rooted Oneplus 7t pro I will be very disappointed..

I dont know what new functionality V4A would give me and I'm obviously not missing it as I haven't felt the need to root any phone for well over 5 years. Android 12/13 and Samsung UI is plenty flexible and open enough for the vast majority of users not to NEED to root.
Nobody is saying you don't have the right to root,... you do have the right! Go root yout $2000 device if you want to Its your choice
...but root with your eyes open and research the pros and cons before you flash a non-samsung image & permanently trip the knox efuse.
HOWEVER.... look again at the title of this forum topic

hi mastrok. i felt the same like you. i was using v4a since many many years and i loved it.
so then i did buy a fold 4 and i started to realize that v4a will not work on this phone. this was very sad and disappointing for me.
so i had to look for an alternative solution.
i installed jamesdsp via magisk and i use poweramp.
in jamesdsp i only set up the convolver. in poweramp i set up the equalizer and the bass and treble adjustment.
for me the sound is now like in v4a.
i am satisfied with that solution.
but to come back to the topic: you need root access for that i assume.

why do you say that you loose banking apps and samsung pay with root? that is not true!
and after root my knox status remained at knox 0x0 as i remember when i was the last time in download mode.
i can easily unroot it if i want.

It IS true in the UK that some banking apps wont run on rooted devices (santander, HSBC for 2 examples)
My understanding was that knox is tripped permanently first time you flash a custom rom or a non samsung image.
News to me that this has changed, but good luck to you.
I will never root a samsung phone again ever ever. no need. too many downsides. too few upsides.
Finally, there was a poll in XDA last month about who plans to root their Fold4. 75% of recipients said never ever. 25% said maybe.
Rooting is now un unpopular and specialist option less than 25% of XDA members want. This is fact, stats taken from an open poll.
