alternative view: superwide is super useless - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Ok, perhaps an overstrong heading! But this is just my opinion - I actually don't find the superwide nearly as useful as I thought I would. First of all, the quality isn't great and secondly the distortion from it being such a small lens makes it interesting, but not particularly useful. It's especially bad if people are in the picture. I'm really interested to know where people have used it where it actually added some value.

I wouldn't agree for main camera superwide, i managed to took some nice pics that i couldn't capture otherwise, quality is not the point here, but what you can capture with it.
BUT! my real question is, what is the freaking point of 2 cameras on front? They make almost no difference between each other..

You can't actually use the second camera on the front it is just solely for depth information to the other sensor

Extremely useful when travelling and trying to take pictures of architecture. Most cities in the world are very dense and objects are large, with limited space to position yourself for a photo. Your only choice here is to carry an ultra-wide lens. Most of my pictures from my recent trip to Vienna were done in ultra-wide. Stick it into DxO ViewPoint and correct the geometry and you have fantastic photos.

For me, Its a useful option in the right situations...

It's useless until you need it. I thought it was the useless but when in a tight space where you need to capture more area in your photo, the wide angle is extremely useful. Happens a lot to me when I take photos for site inspections (construction job).

Or taking a photo for a group of people and the space is somewhat tight you cant go so much backwards

Completely useful since I remember in my LG G6 u can capture interesting perspectives.

The camera software sucks

tl;dr - see subject
i have to vent here for a few minutes.
i'm sorry but the camera on this phone - or at the very least the software that controls it - sucks beyond anything i've ever used before. my main issue stems from the brainless way it handles orientation when attaching to things like email, tweets, mms, etc. WHY.THE. can't the software figure out how i took the shot? if i don't post the shot in the exact way that samsung wants me to, my shots come out upside down or rotated the wrong way.
maybe it's me. maybe i'm too big of an idiot to use a camera. oh wait, no. i'm a professional photographer. i know what you're going to say but i like having a phone with a good point and shoot so i don't have to lug around another piece of equipment.
full disclosure, i'm a fruit phone convert and i've only been on android for a month but in that time i've figured out how to put a kickass ROM on the phone (juggernaugh FTW) and a host of other things so i think i'm pretty keen on what the phone can/cannot do.
i feel like a total idiot when i tell people how much radder android is than iphone but i can't seem to send them an appropriately orientated photo.
thoughts?
thanks for letting me rant.
!
yea tl;dr lol just skimmed
but i do agree that the camera sucks. doesn't auto focus on specific double tap areas in low.light conditions.
i.e. room light is on low and i double tap to focus on the TV. TV still blurry and bright.
my Vibrant isolates the TV when i do the same thing. can see what's on my TV clearly instead of blurred and bright.

my overall complaint isn't i guess with the optics but with the software. especially for sharing or moving to a computer. i don't think that i should have to worry about orientation when i post to twitter or an email.

try taking a vertical picture, post it to twitter, fb, whatever, and see what happens. again my complaint isn't the optics - it's the software.
Ill second the whole orientation thing. I took a picture with the phone upside down, and it made the photo upside down... we have an accelerometer and gyroscope in this thing for a reason!! Its been getting on my nerves.
Other than that the camera is pretty bad ass, ive got no other qualms with the camera.

I second this. You sound really full of yourself and think because you are a "pro" photographer you can bash a camera. The orientation issue, I don't have it. My pics post just fine. And quality is good for a phone.
The sensation camera sucks and the audiobl recording has been horrible since the 2.3.4 update.
Try one of the many camera replacement apps like Pudding Camera or Camera360

Yeah sensation has a different camera than mt4gs and amaze, they have the same camera.. our camera is great don't get me wrong but amaze is far superior. Smart shot and hdr alone are in a different class.
Truth is when talking about a phone camera ours is spectacular, but the amaze camera can compete with point and shoots and even some cheap dslrs
sent from my real Gs move in silence like lasagna
The Amaze camera is not that good. It can complete with some point and shoot cameras in a few scenarios, but it's got poor color reproduction among other issues. All of that HDR **** is just software processing. The Nokia N8 or whichever Nokia has that 12MP lense is where it's at.

I agree OP.
The camera on my Sensation blew this one out of the water. This camera takes pictures that look worse than those taken with a $1 disposable camera.
I mean, look...
Lol ****ty pic.....
But to be fair I think in order for our cameras to reach full potential you have to tweak the dozens of setting put in place by Samsung. I think that's where 3rs party camera apps come in...
So I suggest we turn this thread into a how to/which apps improve pictures on the sgs2.
I myself haven't found a great daily stock replacement camera on the market that works well with a balance of features/picture quality. I tried pudding but the quality suffers a little.. 360 is not for me too much like a toy cam. Vignette is nice I've yet to try it on our phone.
I also have been using the "fall" scene mode on our phone and colors come out 10x more vibrant and saturated

Geek.com N1 article

http://www.geek.com/android/oppo-n1...aking-cm-from-free-time-to-full-time-1577783/
Pretty good read, brings up a few new points:
1) CM version is using 4.3. (4.3.1, maybe)
2) Quote: CM on the Oppo N1 includes support for all of the unique hardware that is included with the smartphone, as well as many of the software features that Oppo themselves made available for the Color OS version of the N1.
3) The camera also flips as you rotate it around to make sure you’re capturing from the right perspective.
#3 is interesting, makes sense (so it's not upsidedown!) but when does it do that?
One of the big pros of the rotating camera is that you can set the phone down on a flat surface, and rotate the camera to point 'forwards'. So Perhaps this is only for vertical orientation?

I tend to point mine all over the place. It's really nice for adjusting to the light in an area. You can hold it higher or lower while changing the camera angle to get the exact picture that you want. I've taken a few hundred pictures in the two weeks that I've had the N1, and the ability to move the camera never seemed important until I was able to do it. Now I often find myself trying to get that right angle on my HTC One, but the N1 has spoiled me for taking the right picture at the right time and angle.

[Q] Problem camera - pictures with noise / low quality compared to G3

Hi ..
I bought the device from LG G4 H815 from CLOVE website and for some reason the camera quality is poor daylight compared to my previous device G3.
After I took a picture I made zoom in to check the quality , and here I find that image noise / blurred G3 compared to a photo in G3 ...
How is it possible, it happens to you too?
Another thing I did not have the option of adjusting 8-megapixel, 13 megapixel (as there is in LG G3)
I'd love to know if there is such a thing ...
The quality is really bad ..
I'm with:
5.1
Build Number: LMY47D
Software Version: V10b-EUR-XX
regards,
Tomer.

Just check If there is same modification in Camera Settings
there is different pic ratio in auto mode for instance.
:good:
thank you for your reply
same ratio, but still picture not good...:crying:
can you add a photo for me (from your G4) ?
in Basic Mode ...
Ive checked up on this and from what I have read:
16:9 = 16MPx / 4:3 = 12 MPx / 1:1 = 8.5MPx (ill try and find the link)
With camera quality.. I know it sounds crazy, but I found cleaning my IR Laser focus and camera lens with Glass or lens cleaner worked for me (remember do not spray cleaner on the lens, apply it to a cloth, then polish the lens with the cloth) and wipe it VERY VERY Gently with a micro fibre cloth or an optical Glasses cloth ,
next Goto > Settings > Display > scroll down to More > Motion sensior calibration (lay it on a very flat surface).. and set it.. (try it a few times)
Motion sensor calibration sets the OIS and all the camera and focus sensors up.
Hope this helps..

Im inclined to agree with others here.. they look fine to me. Can I ask you to take some images of smaller objects with close up detail, such as flowers, kids toys, pets, food./. etc.. also, can you post the same pics taken with your G3. Take all pics in 16:9 ratio on both devices, full auto mode without flash.
If you have an issue, it may be the OIS.
They are beautiful pics. look in the bottom left hand corner of the ones youve taken or zoom in places.. theres lovely detail in the brick work.
I've actually noticed the same sort of thing with mine. I think the phone's postprocessing is too strong. Pictures of things like animals and trees almost look like an oil painting filter has been applied if you zoom in on them. Check out the fur on the picture I attached- LG's algorithm doesn't know what to do with images that have a lot of small, complex elements like leaves or fur. Thankfully that's something that could be patched, but I haven't heard many other people noticing it so I doubt it will be.
1. You never ever look at photos of this size. When looked at in a reasonable size, the pictures look awesome. When you downsize the pictures to a reasonable picturesize you would print, look at them again. You won't see those flaws.
2. Postprocessing of the jpegs is really to heavy and when you take a look at the DNGs, you see a real improvement over the jpegs. And I prefer the DNGs, since I can handle all of the parameters myself in Lightroom.
I think we will see some patches to the camera and postprocessing in the future, since LG is aware of the issue with the jpegs.

Agreed here. That photo is briliant, however, yes I agree, LGs processing is very aggressive as is the OIS, so you get over-sharpening, One of the pit falls In photography is to digitally zoom into your images on your PC to check the sharpness, but this is a very bad habit to start and very hard to break.. try to avoid doing this.
In truth... no-body looks at an image 20 or 30x digitally zoomed.. Pictures are to be enjoyed and the camera is only as good as the photographer, so get the light right, frame your subject as big as you can in the view finder, by walking upto your subject and framing it.. not digitally zooming and get creative ... Its so easy to get caught up in the technology that we forget why we take photographs.. which is to either save our memories or create our art. To me, youtube reviewers started this crazy trend of digitally zooming everywhere, so some folk think that a good photograph is one that after a digital zoom you can read the text on a road sign 500 yards away and missing all the image round about.. this is not photography, its zooming.
If your just taking pictures for the technically sharp image, then.. go and buy a DSLR, because no phone camera will ever do it.
Hand on heart, some of the best images Ive ever taken were with an HTC One M8s 4UPX camera.. zoomed n they look like my nephews cra*py MineCraft game, but the image itself.. looks stunning.
Bottom Line, Enjoy your images and the love of photography.. the G4 is one of the best cameras on a phone Ive ever used..
However, if your not happy with the G4s camera.. either return it or buy a nice compact or bridge camera..
Enjoy Photo fans..
but the my quality camera (what i captured here before) is good ?
i mean this not bad sensor or something, right ?
I thought they looked ok, personally. Can you post comparison pics from the G3 (the same pics taken on each, preferably), to demonstrate the issue you are referring to?
Yes, I agree with the subsequent comments. Many years ago I ran motorized Nikons, and did my own color processing and printing, and I like to think I still have an eye for a decent print. I looked at two of the pictures, and while I might have suggested one click higher on the ISO (and that's just personal preference, really) I don't see anything wrong with the pictures.

My dad used tr be a wedding photographer before he retired, but he still owns one of the original Rolliflex cameras. These days though I own a Canon SX700. Do you still have any of your Nikons
Another aspect of photography is that whenever you change your camera, youll always get differences thats why Photographers have multiple cameras... such as My canon has a minimum focal distance of 1cm and a 30x Optical zoom, so Ide use it for Macro ( small close up), yet my Olympus stylus 1 has quite nice sharpening and a wide angle Aperture of f3.2 so ide use it for landscapes.
Again, I have to say Tomer, I think your images are great, Heres an experiment you can try which might help.. take your camera out.. and take a few images of things that make you happy and what you want... completely forget about images that show off the camera tech, maybe your kids or friends or something like that,... download them to your PC and look at them.. dont zoom.. then see how you feel about your G4.
Heres the Image I took with a 4 Mpx HTC M8..
Its not technically brilliant, but it was a fun day and thats all that matters.
No, the Nikons and a trillion dollars worth of glass went long ago. I very much miss the film, but just wearied of carrying around a backbreaking load of gear. The digital image is not as good as film, and I don't care what anybody claims to the contrary on that, but I do agree completely that the best camera is the one you have at hand when the picture opportunity arises, and clearly the phone camera wins by a mile on that score.
Enzo
OP, I think a very easy test here would be to take the same photo using JPG, and again using RAW. Then, look at each zoomed in. You should see that the JPG has compression artifacts, but the RAW does not. Then, you will see the camera quality capabilities in the RAW to verify the camera is fine, and perhaps you are just seeing software compression artifacts in JPG.
In fact, it would be interesting to see those two pictures if you could post them here. Choose a subject that has a pattern that will give the JPG compression algorithm trouble, like the cat fur or many leaves/blades of grass at a distance, to make the difference more pronounced.

Major selfie cam distortion?

Okay, so I know no one likes the look of themselves when they catch glimpse of their face in selfie mode when you first open an app like Snapchat or front-facing cam is already activated when you go to take a pic etc, but, wow, I feel like a monster when I see how I look using the Note 7.
Arm fully stretched out and the pics/video look great, but why is it so disgustingly distorted up close? My head looks so long and weird. I know front-facing cams have always had a little distortion, but I've never experienced it this bad before (coming from 9 years of iPhones and brief flings with a Galaxy Note 1 and a LG G3).
Can anyone explain why? Will any of us have an ounce of self-esteem left after a few weeks of use?! lol
Sorry to say but you might just be ugly.
If i recall correctly there's a "beauty" setting that change the way your face looks, maybe it's on and you just don't like how it changes it ?

Don't get me wrong, holding the phone with arm fully extended to take a selfie produces great results (with or without settings changed). I'm talking about when it's close to the face. The lens makes things look really out of shape. Never seen anything like it on a phone before.

I think because it is a wide angle lens so the edges of the camera lens makes you look a little weird. That's less so the case with the portion of the image that's more centered. Is the entire image distorted or only the edge portion of it?
mines super wide to what im accustomed too. Looks silly
Try to put your face in the middle of the camera, not near the edges.... Everything near the edges will look a little distorted since the camera is spheric and the image is a square, so thats just a weird effect.
When you use other apps that take 4:3 pictures you won´t notice this distortion because you are not using the edges of the camera, it will only happen in 16:9 pictures.
Basically every phone nowadays. Every one wants a wider selfie camera but don't realize wide lenses have a big byproduct. DISTORTION.
EVERYONE WANTS A WIDE ANGEL CAMARA. NOT SURE YOU KNOW EVERYONE, but if that was true then every one is an dumb *as. Wide angel is for scenery to shoot landscape not to point at once face and look like a blower fish.
My phone is useless with this wide angel camera and the idiots at Google messed up since the camera app was supposed to correct the image but doesnt work. SO we should be asking for a recall and a refund, but we are so stupid that we just deal with it. THis is a defect people. I have go pro with wide angel camera and my face doesnt look like long or fat head. COMPLAIN PEOPLE AND GET A REPLACEMENT OR A YOUR MONEY BACK> I"m a professional photographer, so I'm telling you. You all got scammed

OnePlus 8 Pro Camera vs Pixel 4 Camera

I thought you might be interested in the camera being put up against the Pixel 4 -
Start off with a blind test, camera A or camera B and see if you can guess which is which! The video then shows some of the differences before moving on to some video samples in varying conditions. It really surprised me how well the OnePlus 8 Pro stacks up against what is generally considered the best Android camera at present.
I find it really frustrating that when reviewing phones almost every reviewer uses entirely static scenes and goes straight from either outdoors in good light to really low light/night mode stuff.
Photos of people (or pets) in average light (i.e. indoors) is where the rubber really meets the road for phones IMO and is where the Pixel and iPhone 11 are still better. I have all 3 phones BTW, currently using the 8 pro and do really like it but if camera was my # priority I'd be using the iPhone or Pixel.
Sorry, I don't have any pets. That and the lock down means I'm left with generally static subjects!
8pro does very well to be fair. With updates it should get better too.

Sorry meant no offence, it is an observation for all youtube reviewers. I think all of today's flagships are pretty decent in good light and it then comes down to preference.
No offence taken. It's an interesting point I hadn't considered.

sorry to be off-topic nice to see 2 guys discuss a matter with no rant and clearing up things in a polite manner...not always the case these days... thank you...
ha ha, yeah I guess it can be a rarity these days!
I'm very impressed so far. Big upgrade from my 6T to say the least. Macro is fun to play around with. I can honestly see myself using the macro feature a fair bit. I haven't had a chance to try out low light yet, but I'll cross my fingers.

haha me too, didn't thought i would use macro more often
Everybody keeps telling me how great the pixel camera is due to it's software
I keep seeing the results and think, yes it's a great pic but I just can't see much difference to any flagship camera other than it makes colours more saturated.
It's all swings and roundabouts
Anyone elses 3x zoom pictures are brighter than usual compared to what is showing on the viewfinder?
Edit: Doesn't happen when I use burst mode on 3x. Example attached.
